:It's actually a lot more simple than you may initially think (hell, even I was pretty confused about it myself at first). Basically all you need to do is when you go to upload the image or edit it, all you need to do is type <nowiki>[[Category:<Your Category Here>]]</nowiki>. When it comes to having a gif as a profile image or whatever, if you mean on your userpage, yeah it's definitely possible, just remember to put <nowiki>[[Category:User images]]</nowiki> on the image so that way it's known that it's for userspace purposes. If you mean on your signature however, I'm about 90% certain that's not allowed, since gifs in signatures would eat up server space or whatever, making it harder to load talk pages and such.
