You use "on" if it's a specific date; "in" fits, since it's a generalization.

"Passed away" is, like, the biggest euphemism for death out there. And even so, if someone gets shot, you say they died, not they passed away.

"Passed away" seems like the term used most often on these articles. Sounds more professional, anyway. Also updating a couple of other things.
