Since we have a separate IP welcome template, should we take out the part that relates to signing in/creating a username? Miles (talk) 21:10, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Yes; chances are, the person has an account and is logged on when this template is put up (I noticed that this is put up when a new user makes a contribution), so the creating a username part should be taken out. Friedbeef1 Ho ho ho! 03:57, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Should we put Button sig.png in it so new users can know what it is so they can sign their post easier?Smoreking(T) (c) 01:57, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

You love shutting me down, don't you :| Smoreking(T) (c) 03:03, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Only on every day ending with the word "day". --Sky (t · c · w) 03:10, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Oh, that's not too much.Smoreking(T) (c) 03:11, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

If {{{1}}} and {{{2}}} are the same, can they merged into just one selection, or no? Thanks, TimeMaster Talk Main Contribs 23:17, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

{{1}} is the welcomer's username; {{2}} can be their signature --> different. Miles (talk) 00:55, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Cool, I have a custom signature, for two months ago. Thanks for telling me that. Thanks, TimeMaster Talk Main Contribs 01:08, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

WTF

How come every time I use the template, it goes horribly wrong and shoves my username into it? SD706/FnW - (UTC ) 01:28, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

{{subst:welcome|Silverdragon706|~~~~}} Just use that. And fix it to the way it was before you started editing it.Smoreking(T) (c) 01:31, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Welcome vs Welcome IP

The line about creating an account needs to be removed - that's only appropriate if the user is an IP, and there's actually a separate template for that. This was fleetingly discussed in December, but nothing was actually done about it. I think that the entire line should be removed. At the moment the template doesn't really make sense, which isn't doesn't create the best first impression for a new user. PenguinofDeath 10:10, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

An IRC link?

IRC would keep the user busy and it's better to include it (If you want to talk about unrelated stuff, use SW:IRC). Most people who welcome don't bother to do this like me, so can we include an IRC link, and maybe a Freenode link and how to use it?--MegaTron1XD:p 02:13, July 27, 2010 (UTC)

As much as getting users on the IRC for conversations is a good thing, I think in this case it's not a great idea. When a new contributor shows up, it is more important that they get comfortable with the editing of this wiki. Once they start conversations, we can mention to them that it might be better to take some conversations to the IRC. But new contributors shouldn't feel like they can't ask about editing, and I worry that telling them to talk to the user that put up the welcome template on the IRC will do just that. We should let them figure out SmashWiki, then get them involved on the IRC. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 04:21, July 27, 2010 (UTC)

Coupla changes

  • "and thank you for your contributions": This template's often put on the talkpages of users who've yet to... make any contributions.
  • "Please sign in, if you haven't already, and create a user name! It's free, and it'll help you keep track of all your edits. See Help:Why create an account for more info on creating an account": Only given to users who've made an account, so this is unnecessary.

Any ideas as to what to replace these with? Miles (talk) 21:33, 30 October 2010 (EDT)

We could probably just take those out. The rest of it will still make sense. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 21:35, 30 October 2010 (EDT)

Automated

You guys can create a bot for this, and the welcome extension helps. So whenever someone creates an account it automatically adds it to their talk page, that's what Metroid Wiki does anyways. That'd probably require the Random extension too so that the little signature can randomize between admins or other staff members. Malake256 (talk) 17:56, 18 December 2010 (EST)

I dislike the idea of welcoming users that haven't done anything yet, and if it's a vandal account a warning is more suited to be the only thing on the talkpage than a welcome and a warning. Toomai Glittershine ??? 18:02, 18 December 2010 (EST)
