Article on Super Mario Wiki Kamek

Kamek (カメック, Kamek) is an antagonist from the Yoshi and Mario series. He is a Magikoopa, which is a species that is also known as "Kamek" in certain games and languages, such as Japanese. As a result, the Magikoopa species is often conflated with the individual Kamek, similar to Yoshi, Birdo, and Toad; however, Kamek also appears in the Yoshi games while common Magikoopas are restricted to Mario games.

Origin

Magikoopas made their debut in Super Mario World as an enemy, and has become a recurring enemy in later Mario games. They are magical and powerful high-ranking Koopas who also act as Bowser's advisors and/or caretakers, with prominent Magikoopas including Kamek and Kammy Koopa. They feature a pointed bill with more profound fangs, eyeglasses, pointed hats, and robes that covers most of their body, sometimes leaving their feet uncovered.

Magikoopas are known for teleporting, casting magical spells, and shooting magical blasts with their magic scepter. The blast resembles a sparkling conglomeration of basic geometrical shapes, including a circle, a triangle, and a quadrilateral shape that can either damage the player on contact. Sometimes, the Magikoopas are often seen riding their broomsticks. In Super Mario World, if one Magikoopa is defeated, they are then quickly replaced with another Magikoopa.

Kamek made his debut in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island as the main antagonist and has become a recurring antagonist in the Yoshi and Mario series. He is a Magikoopa, a high-ranking Koopa, and is a caretaker to Baby Bowser and later his personal advisor.

Kamek is known for assisting the bosses of the Yoshi and in the New Super Mario Bros. series starting with New Super Mario Bros. Wii by using his magic. In Yoshi's Island, Kamek uses his magic to make the bosses gigantic (or in the case of the Prince Froggy boss, shrinking Yoshi and Baby Mario). In the New Super Mario Bros. series, Kamek uses his magic to alter the elements of the Koopalings' boss stages and make Bowser gigantic.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Kamek appears as two stickers.

Kamek appear as a relatively tough enemy; only one Kamek can appear at a time, but he can respawn if defeated. He flies around on his broom and moves by teleporting around and swooping forwards. He attacks whether by swooping at the player, or shooting a single or a trio of magical projectiles from his magical scepter, which lowers the player's fighter random stats on contact. Kamek's magic blasts are very reminiscent of those he fires during his boss battle in New Super Mario Bros. U in both appearance and the fact he can fire them in a three-way spreadshot.

As a stage element

Kamek appears as a stage element on the Mushroom Kingdom U stage. When he appears, he casts a spell which switches the stage between its possible layouts. He doesn't interact directly with the fighters.

In Smash Tour

Kamek appears as a random event in Smash Tour. He appears at the beginning of a turn and uses his magic to change the position of the checkpoints.

Trophies

Kamek's trophy is part of the Yoshi's Island Trophy Box.

In the Mushroom Kingdom U stage, he swoops onto the screen every so often to transform the stage with his magic. Now and then, though, he'll tease you by not casting any magic at all. He's a sly one, that Kamek.
NTSCSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS Kamek is a magic-wielding, robed figure usually seen riding on a broomstick in the Mario series. He teleports around the stage, looking for fighters. When he finds one, he'll cast spells at them. If he hits you with one, your stats will drop. That's no good, since you'll need some power to deal with Kamek's high stamina!

Kamek reprises his role in the Mushroom Kingdom U stage.

Spirit

Kamek also appears as an Advanced-class primary spirit. Another member of the Magikoopa species, Kammy Koopa, also appears as a primary spirit.

In Adventure Mode: World of Light, Kamek and Kammy Koopa are presumably two of the countless spirits captured by Galeem during his takeover of the universe. Kamek's spirit is located in the Molten Fortress sub-dungeon of The Light Realm, while Kammy Koopa's spirit is located in the mushroom platforms section of The Light Realm.

In both spirits' battles, the puppet fighters start off with a Star Rod, referencing their magic scepters.

Kamek uses an army of Inkling puppet fighters and is fought on the Mushroom Kingdom U stage's Slide Tower layout. During the battle, an army of Inklings appear after the first Inkling is defeated, referencing how Kamek's Magikoopa species is replaced by another Magikoopa after it is defeated in Super Mario World.

Kammy Koopa uses a Bayonetta puppet fighter and is fought on the Paper Mario stage. During the battle, all fighters become invisible after a while, referencing Kammy Koopa's ability to turn herself and her allies invisible in battle in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

Trivia

  • In a Nintendo Japan questionnaire, Kamek was included as a popularly requested character for Super Smash Bros. Melee.[1]
  • Despite being a Mario trophy in both versions of Super Smash Bros. 4, the Kamek trophy is part of the Yoshi's Island Trophy Box in the Wii U version, which makes sense considering he is Yoshi's arch nemesis.
  • Kamek's spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is listed under the Mario series, despite the fact that he made his debut in the Yoshi series, as well as being a primary antagonist of these games, likely because he appears in Super Smash Bros. on a Mario series stage.
