The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, also known as the Super NES, SNES, Super Nintendo, and in Japan as the Super Famicom (スーパーファミコン Sūpā Famikon?) is a 16-bit video game console that was released by Nintendo in North America, Europe, Australia, and South America between 1990 and 1993. It was the successor to the original NES, though it did not sell as well but was popular nonetheless. On this system, many of Smash Bros.' fighters starred in their first game, though would be much better known in the release of the system's successor, the Nintendo 64 in 1996.
