Tumbling is the state a character is in when falling back down after receiving knockback. Tumbling is not the same as being helpless. Tumbling characters cannot attack, but they can do a few things:
- They can alter their trajectory, such as falling back towards the stage.
- They can double jump (if it has not yet been used) or triple jump, which may allow Meteor Canceling.
- They can grab edges normally.
- They can air dodge (in Brawl only).
- They can tap the Control Stick sideways in an attempt to end the tumble and enter their normal falling state.
- They can tech, presuming they are at most 20 frames away from hitting the ground.
If tumbling characters hit the ground, they will remain laying down and have to use a Floor Recovery.
While being hit by an attack is the most common way to start tumbling, there are other ways:
- Carrying a heavy object off an edge.
- Being Footstool Jumped in the air.
Reeling is a state similar to tumbling, entered during the knockback of a powerful hit. Once the character slows down or hits a wall or ceiling, the reeling turns into tumbling. Reeling has the same properties as tumbling but cannot be ended by tapping the Control Stick.
