The R button refers to the large, grey button on the top right corner of the Wii U GamePad, Nintendo 64 GameCube, Classic, and Wii U Pro Controllers. Its purpose in SSB is to grab opponents. It is used in SSBM and SSBB for defense techniques, such as shielding, rolling, air dodging in midair, and sidestep dodging, which is shared with the L button.
