When playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, the - Button has absolutely no function. However, when playing with the Wii Remote held sideways, the minus button can be used to grab.
When using a horizontal Wii Remote, the minus button is used to grab. When using the left Joy-Con horizontally, the minus button acts as the Start/Pause button. The minus button does nothing on other controllers.

In Super Smash Bros. 4, the minus button returns on the Wii U GamePad, still doing nothing. It can still be used to grab with the Wii Remote held sideways.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, when using Joy-Con (L) as a single Joy-Con held horizontally, the minus button will act like a plus button, allowing pausing.
