Downloadable content, usually abbreviated as DLC, is additional content available to download after the games' launch. DLC was first confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4 in the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza Nintendo Direct, and can be used to add new playable characters, stages, and even new features.

Super Smash Bros. 4

The following features are confirmed to appear as downloadable content in SSB4.

Updates

Updates to the game must be downloaded from the eShop with no extra cost, and usually fix bugs and other errors.

Characters

Mewtwo was announced as the very first DLC character in the Super Smash Bros. series during the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza. While little else is known about it, Mewtwo will be a free download to players who own both versions of SSB4. Any new attacks including an unconfirmed Final Smash are unknown.

Stages

A stage based on the Miiverse application found on Wii U and 3DS consoles, it was confirmed in the 50-Fact Extravaganza that it would be added to the Wii U version of SSB4 sometime after release.

Modes

During the 50-Fact Extravaganza, it was confirmed that the Wii U version of SSB4 will contain a special mode that allows players to compete in and host tournaments online, but that it would not be ready at launch.
