Bidou refers to a technique exclusively in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. It involves using a specific controller layout from the defualt with the following buttons:

  • Right Joystick set to Special Move
  • R button set to Jump
  • L button set to Shield
  • Y button set to Grab
  • ZR button set to Attack
  • ZL button set to Special Move
    • These are interchangeable, meaning that as long as the shoulder/trigger buttons and Right Joystick have these inputs, it will still work. For continuity, this article will use this list when explaining inputs.

Bidou was brought into full fruition by My Smash Corner from a video previously uploaded by a Japanese smasher, and has a lot of potential to greatly effect the metagame. The application of this tech essentially involves the usage of other techniques, such as perfect pivoting, dash dancing, and fox troting. It is somewhat an entire method of play; in order to use it one must simply hold down the ZL button with the control scheme listed above. Keep in mind that this means it can only be performed with certain controllers, and as such is nonexistent in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. One must press and hold the ZL button during any time in which an action cannot be performed, examples include lag or shield. At this point, something peculiar happens: The Right Joystick no longer performs special moves but rather a directional attack, and it will be inputted for only one frame. It makes performing many actions otherwise impossible or to difficult to be done continually quite simple.
