Coastward is a Semi-Professional Canadian Melee player from Ontario Canada. He mains Ganondorf in both Melee and Project M but his current Smash 4 main is unknown. Prior to his most recent sponsorship, he was a member of Even Matchup Gaming, a Toronto crew. He was otherwise known for his unfortunate GIF of his fist bump denial (as well as the humorous reaction which became an Emote on EMG's Twitch) during McSmashter 4.
Recent sponsorship
Coastward, as part of a joke with his friends decided to excessively tweet/message FAKKU, a hentai site, to sponsor him. Unexpectedly Fakku sponsored him. They noted in a later tweet, "Your hard work and dedication shows us what it means to be a real man" and it became official at a later point. and he is is now currently sponsored, getting merchandise from FAKKU as well as other things. This was seen as a controversy in both the Reddit and Smashboards community.
Controversy
While Coastward was indeed sponsored, which is seen as news to the smash community, it was unexpected that an adult website would sponsor someone. People had issues with this seeing that smash appeals to all ages, though especially to teens, and this site was definitely not for all ages. Due to the E-sports mentality of the smash community, this was seen as a step back from a further Nintendo sponsorship.
Site edits
The Smashboards interview on his sponsorship was edited by AlphaZealot the head of Smashboards to remove links to the aforementioned website/twitter. The Reddit post about the sponsorship was originally deleted as rule 7A prohibits NSFW (Not Suitable for Work) content but was then allowed later. These posts also attracted a lot of attention and led to further people looking for sponsorships that weren't as suited for kids, such as Lucky's attempt (albeit unsuccessful) to be sponsored by Stone Brewing.
