Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

An icon used in notice templates. NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.

Aesthetics

  • Change As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Ryu's model features a more subdued color scheme.
  • Change Ryu's muscles and other physical features are more pronounced.
  • Change Ryu's up taunt no longer has him turn around when tightening his headband.
  • Change Ryu's hair now has a more spiky texture like in Street Fighter V.

Attributes

  • Change In 1-on-1 matches, Ryu will always face his opponent, similar to how he behaves in his origin series.
    • Buff This makes it harder to make accidental inputs for his attacks.
    • Buff This makes it harder to be hit from behind by Back Slash or affected fully by Nosferatu.
    • Nerf This makes him easier to be hit with Disable.
    • Nerf This mechanic makes it harder to use his back aerial, and attack things behind Ryu, such as Smash Balls, Assist Trophies, and possibly Nana.

Ground Moves

Special moves

  • Change During Ryu's Shin Shoryuken, the opposing fighter has been given new animations while getting hit, somewhat inspired by animations from Street Fighter IV for the Metsu Shoryuken.
  • Buff Ryu can cancel his aerials into special attacks in the same way he can cancel some of his ground attacks.
  • Buff From his character showcase video, he appears to be able to Super Cancel his Hadoken (and possibly Shoryuken) into his Final Smash, a technique carried over from some of his own games. He is shown cancelling his Shakunetsu Hadoken into his Shin Shoryuken, and it is not known if this is possible from both the normal and command versions of special moves along with being able to use the Shinku Hadoken.

Trivia

  • Ryu and Wii Fit Trainer are the only two characters (so far) whose full renders are not on the official Super Smash Bros. Ultimate website. In this case, the picture stops around his ankles.
  • Due to his unique trait of facing his opponent in a 1-on-1 fight, Ryu is the only character who can walk backwards.
    • This is excluding Snake and Kirby (with the Snake Copy Ability), who can walk backwards only when holding a Hand Grenade.
