Vandals

Please list the names/IP's of potential vandals here. Also, if possible, tell me the page(s) they vandalized so that I can verify the claim and assess the damage. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 02:20, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

and I am a user who needs help. What are the most pressing matters on this wiki to be edited? What needs to be done? and is there a page for all the policies?User:DCP

Policies should be in the community portal, or you could just search in the SmashWiki namespace. As for things that need to get done, We're still trying to tie up the loose ends on the Brawl Character pages. Just make sure they are all in the same format. The ones that you should be referencing them against are Falco (SSBB) or Meta Knight (SSBB). Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 04:44, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Question about machinima

Hello Clarinet Hawk. Now, I don't know if this topic has been debated or argued over, mainly because I didn't really start contributing to this wiki until a short time ago, and I don't really have the patience to rife through countless pages of archived information. However I do wish to ask as to why there is no page for machinima. I originally started to create it, but I found it had been deleted on July 9 by Silverdragon (or something like that). I would just ask them, but they are apparently on vacation or something, so therefore I ask you, because you were the first person on the admin list. I do believe it would be a relevant page to the wiki, if it had maybe a short history of Smash Bros. machinima, or a listing of machinmas with an explanation of their plot.

If this cannot be fufilled, then may I request a page be made for certain well-known machinmas, because as of right now, only The Last Tier War, Smashtasm, and The Wrath of Giga Bowser have their own pages. Now know that I am not bearing ill will towards those machinima, but I feel other machinimas like, Peach's Slutty Adventure, Wolf's Retarded Mission, Brawlgasm, and Smash Fighter should have their own pages as well.

Please respond posthaste as to this matter. Thank you for hearing my arguements and reasoning. IrvThaSol (talk to me)

What I think would be best is to get a single page called machinima and discuss it as whole. We will then put the actual content over on the fanon wiki with links on the page here. This is the same thing I'm going to be doing for the fan games. Give me a week to get home and it will all be taken care of. As for now, if you want to make the machinima page with basic informaiton on what it is and a list of the famous smash macinimas, that would be great. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 21:05, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
Alright, I created the page, but I never have created one before, so I'm not quite sure if I got it right, so I classified it a stub. I need to put in a few more machinimas I guess. ....What's fanon wiki? IrvThaSol (talk to me) 12:37 23 December 2008 (Eastern)

Texture hack

It's pretty popular amongst smash hackers nowadays. What they do is take the texture of characters/stages/items and change the colors to be practically anything. An example is turning Wolf into Vegeta. These guys are the primary ones out there. If you want, I'd be more than happy to write an article on it but I wanted to get approval first so it doesn't end up being deleted. Shade487z 03:47, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Quick Deletion for (Nude samus cheat)This page

I was searching through pages and i saw [Nude samus cheat|This page]], and i saw it had speedy deletion at the top of the page.

Bullying

I got the feeling that you singled out SapphireKirby777 about the pictoquotes thing. Many users have pictoquotes, but I'm sure that you wouldn't demand that they "get rid of them now". I personally believe that you singled him out and told him off. I am aware that you dislike pictoquotes, after reading your forum, but I believe that if seasoned contributors like Masterman or even admins like Miles can have them, why not everyone? You only told him off, not everyone else. Besides admins are not kings. What you did was just unfair. Toon Ganondorf (t c)

When you start an argument with an administrator, you should probably use correct grammar and non-repetitive words, so they can take you seriously. Blue NinjakoopaTalk 09:08, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

TG, I understand your concerns in the matter. The reason that I directed the comments at Sapphire directly was because he was making tons of pages, sub-pages, and archives of nothing but pictoquotes. I feel that the things as a whole are uncalled for, but the jury is still out about the complete issue. What he was doing, however, was flooding the recent changes and servers with repeated edits to something that policy very well may not allow. Infinite Dimensional Cape

"Additionally, players would do well to refrain from using it in serious matches, as the glitch is highly unfair."

"That sentence does nothing but mark this wiki as a bunch of scrubs. If it isn't banned, you can use it. There is no cheap."

You are incorrect in thinking that this one sentence in an in-depth informative article mars all it's contributors as unskilled players/editors. It is my belief that this website should strive to be the definitive source for any and everything relating to SSB, which can be called upon by absolutely anyone, including those that have never even heard of the game. -It should be written as such. But even if you don't feel that way, this information still has merit.

You are incorrect that "There is no cheap". There are far more casual players than skilled players, and very few tournament players. -And yes, perhaps the majority those high-level players who may be users here agree with you; but they all certainly don't. You're only looking at it from one elite perspective; try and see this from the others.

I intend to continue arguing on this, so please respond; Thanks. Zixor (talk) 22:42, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Arguing over whether or not there is or is not such a thing as "cheap" is kinda missing the forest for the trees. Wikis are intended to be unbiased encyclopedias, which is to say that while they may document the existence of opinions, they should never seek promulgate opinions. Yes, yes, this isn't Wikipedia, I know, but the notion of NPOV (neutral point of view) still holds. Telling people that the glitch is "highly unfair" is a subjective (i.e. not neutral) analysis. Cautioning people not to use the glitch on the basis of said analysis qualifies as promulgating an opinion. The problem is further compounded by the fact that the above sentence treats that analysis as if it were objectively true; it states definitively that the "glitch is highly unfair." Is there such a thing as "unfair"? I don't know. The very existence of multiple points of view, however, is sufficient reason not to include that sentence; it's not the place of SmashWiki to make such judgments. I 'spose you could state that some players consider the glitch highly unfair, though it might be something of a stretch without a citation of some kind. Oh, and I realize that this is semi-semantic, but seeing as how the aforementioned sentence offers only a single viewpoint and treats it as the definitive viewpoint, it's hypocritical to argue with CHawk on the basis that the wiki shouldn't only offer one (i.e. the "elitist") opinion. – Defiant Elements +talk 00:25, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
Everything that DE wrote about the NPOV is good. I would have argued all of it. Furthermore, it is unimportant if some random casual players think that a technique is cheap. We can't prove that it is cheap, and if it isn't banned you can use it. Period. And when you add in the "serious match" your inherently not talking about "casual" players. If you come up to me and say "let's play for $100, but it's not necessarily SBR rules," I'll use this glitch all day long to win my money. It's not important how "unfair" it is. As for the comment that there are more casual players than high-level and they (presumably) think this is cheap is simply argument ad populum, a logical fallacy. Finally, if we do have to go with one group of players' opinion you provide no logic (beyond the fake logic ad populum) as to why it shouldn't be the high level players. A baseball wiki doesn't care that Joe the Plumber thinks that a slider is a cheap pitch, it cares that Randy Johnson (in his prime) utterly dominated virtually every left-handed batter he faced using the slider. Most left handed batters could not hit his pitches. Period. Was it cheap? By your definition, yes. Did Johnson care? Probably, and that's why he kept throwing it. A competitor has no obligation to "play the game the way it was meant to be played," give his/her opponent a chance, and/or make the game interesting to watch. The only thing that matters is that s/he plays within the established letter (not necessarily spirit) of the rules. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 22:32, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Alright, well: I do find it difficult understand and argue too many points at once, and this issue is becoming something of a headache for me with it's many facets; So I'll try just to address one or two of the most important issues at a time. Your writing style is perhaps a bit too intelligent for me to follow at times; but one thing seems clear: you aren't understanding this from beyond your perspective.

All I'm really trying to say in the article is that, to the majority of people, the move is clearly effective to the point that its constant and effective use could evade almost ANY attack, in addition to offensive uses. As long as it's not to fast, you can dodge anything. No other technique realistically allows for this level of evasion (by a wide [almost "infinite"] margin), and I feel that pretty much anyone would agree that the move is "broken", and less than legitimate (unfair, cheap). -I guess I just don't understand how that could really be in debate to an average player.

I definitely understand your perspective, but you have to understand that it isn't fact. This issue is absolutely NOT as cut and dry as you're presenting it.

-And please, try to keep your response simple and direct, as I'm having a hard time locking in on the important points. Zixor (talk) 23:03, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

OK ace, I'll put it simply: if it isn't banned, you can use it. Guess what, this move is banned by the SBR, so for all intents and purposes it is banned in all serious matches. But if it is not explicitly banned in a tournament, a player can use it. I fully understand what the glitch is and what it does. And I also understand that it is banned in SBR certified tournaments. We banned it at the UISCS. That's not my problem. My problem is that we shouldn't tell people to make qualitative judgments about using things that are allowed. A "legitimate" tactic is any tactic that isn't against the rules, even if it might seem cheap. Go to David Sirlin's site and read his treatise Playing to Win before you continue this argument with me. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 02:02, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Very well; I will look into this. In exchange, I would ask that you please refrain from being personally defensive (as I have not attacked you), and please address my main point, which you did not. Zixor (talk) 23:24, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

I've read the prologue and introduction of the book up until this point: "Playing to Win is not for everyone, nor should it be. If your interest lies in other places, I suggest you not continue with this book as it will only upset you." I did not read anymore, as I agreed that this would only upset me.

He's absolutely right. Those who truly play to win are few and far between. -and this site should not limit itself simply to them. Most of the smashers in this world are playing for fun; and most of them feel that certain elements are, indeed, "unfair". Pointing out this exact feeling is not only "not for us to say", it is recommended; as it most certainly reflects (at least) the (probable / potential) feelings of most. It is clear that you are unwilling or unable to understand anything other than a myopic, high-level view of this game; and if you cannot do this, I would recommend that you either yield, or that we seek additional input from other users.

Again; I'm entirely willing to reword this information in a way that you might find more acceptable. -I apologize if my methods of argument are unorthodox (or perhaps even incorrect) or upsetting to you; but I mean you no disrespect; and this is the best, fairest, and most considerate way I know how to do so. Please treat me with the same respect as I do you. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zixor (talkcontribs)

Don't assume that I don't understand where you're coming from. I do. It's really not that complex or hard to understand. It's also not NPOV. Your argument is that because the majority of the people think this (a claim for which you give no warrant), it is the "neutral" point of view to say that it is so. This is a fallacious argument using ad populum as it's logical fallacy. For example, 53% of American voters (myself included) felt that Barack Obama was the "right" choice for president. However, wikipedia would not say "Brack Obama is the right president to lead this country in 2009." It would instead say "Brack Obama won the presidency, carrying 53% of the vote. You also make fallacious arguments through the use of appeals to emotion. Just because something "feels" right or warm and fluffy doesn't mean it is.
Next, refusing to acknowledge counter-arguments because they might upset you is called willful ignorance, otherwise known as plugging your ears and saying "la la la." Don't give me this whiny bunk that the book is only for a small number of people; had you actually read it you would have realized that irrespective of his advice on how to play, there are large discussions on the nature of gaming. There's even two chapters devoted to this exact argument that we're having. I'm not saying that Sirlin is a g-d, or that his word is supreme, but his arguments are based on methodical analysis of games and I have yet to be presented with strong arguments to the contrary.
Also, don't apologize to me for arguing with many logical fallacies. You're the one being hurt by it, not me.
And as for rewording, I'm most opposed to the subjective words "should" and "unfair." To me, saying that the SBR has banned the technique is enough to let people know that it is not to be used. But if we were to extend the sentence it should go (in my opinion) something like "The Infinite Dimensional Cape has been banned by the SBR meaning that all certified tournaments and matches are to be played without it." Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 22:09, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

It seems to me that, at the core, we're really saying the same thing in our respective sentences. Would you agree? Zixor (talk) 05:16, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Not quite. You're making a subjective value judgment, whereas I am making an empirical quantitative judgment. While they may appear to say the same thing, the implications are vastly different. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 06:05, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Let me ask you this: Why exactly do you think the glitch was banned? Zixor (talk) 23:06, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

The fact is that it is not ours (i.e. the Wiki's) to question "why?" The moment we start attempting to explain the facts, we enter the murky quagmire of interpretation. In this instance, at least, there is simply nothing to be gained by doing so; no more actual information is conveyed if we report the opinion that the technique is "unfair" than if we report the fact that the technique is banned. Given that, it's best to stick to the facts. People may interpret the facts however they like (including interpreting them to mean that the tech is unfair), but we shouldn't be interpreting the facts for them. – Defiant Elements +talk 23:26, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
We aren't supposed to explain things? That's confounding. While interpretation may not always be necessary or wise, it can absolutely be constructive (occasionally downright essential) in determining importance, relevance, and understanding (something "to be gained"). Subjective interpretations are everywhere, and often vitally helpful, even within the article in question. "Of course, the potential effectiveness of this move is astounding". Is this a "fact"? It certainly follows as true based on the evidence; and the article would definitely suffer from its removal. As with anything, if someone disagrees with the information, it can be disputed. Considering this, what's wrong with probable agreements based on interpretation? Zixor (talk) 09:19, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
Hmmmm... you're right, I did a poor job explaining that. Here's the point, we've got a disputed interpretation. In this case, the subjective interpretation offers no more useful information than the facts, themselves, do. In such an instance, it's best to stick with the facts. In addition, as CHawk points out, the suggested interpretation makes a values judgment, i.e. it says whether something is, to use a word rather liberally, "morally" right or wrong (in this case, unfair is the word that was used). That kind of interpretation is generally both unnecessary and unwise. – Defiant Elements +talk 12:01, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

I've decided that the article already contains enough evidence for people to draw this conclusion on their own, even without that sentence. -Thank you both for your efforts and patience. Zixor (talk) 19:45, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Just out of curiosity, why was the page FLURRY COMBO deleted. I know it has a lot of loose ends but I just started it and it was not finished.- Jay man

It's unfair that you can have this "movie" thing, yet users can't have simple pictoquotes. Blue NinjakoopaTalk 22:30, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
False: Pictoquotes are continually updated by many users, and it doesn't affect most of the wiki and isn't about the wiki. The movies, even though I disagree with them, deal with Smashwiki in a sense, and that it is not continually updated by many users. Flaming?

clarinet Hawk, I am very concerned about the quote Blue Ninjakoopa posted on this page. It says that he dislikes me. Do I consider that a flaming comment? SapphireKirby777 20:24, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure this isn't my fight, prerogative, responsibility, or otherwise, but I'm also pretty sure that disliking somebody isn't against the rules. In fact, saying that you dislike someone, isn't against the rules. Now, harassing, debasing, or continually remarking on particular dislike is either certainly against the rules, baiting, or borderline. Semicolon (talk) 20:50, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Question about downloads

My friend Jay Man was wondering how to download videos to our [Chaos RIft]] page from an SD card or Memory Disk. Something like a replay from Brawl Mr. Awesome (talk) 17:14, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

You can't do it. The replays aren't saved as videos, they're saved as a series of commands. Any thing that could read those commands that isn't a Wii would be illegal even if it existed, which it doesn't. The only way to do it is to digitally record the output signal from the Wii, then put it on youtube, then embed it here. You can't upload videos to this site. Also, we like to stay away from embedding unnecessary videos, and I would be hard pressed to consider any video embedded in a crew page as necessary content. As a side note, you download stuff from internet sites and upload it to them. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 19:00, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Blocked for a week. You may wish to continue the conversation on his talk page, especially if he asks for an unblock. --Sky (t · c · w) 19:33, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

What is your problem?

I saw how you started bashing KP on his talk page about his signature. That right there proved that you dislike any member that has had any kind of history with the Aftermath Dynasty (I'm surprised you didn't delete the article), and that includes me. I should have known this when you blocked me for three months, but I was trying to assume good faith. Recently, in the forums, you've been ruling me out and trying to make me look like an idiot (do you honestly think saying that "I won't get laid" is necessary?). I don't know what I did, but you need to stop being such a bully to everyone you don't like. Now, about my rollback. "General Misuse"? I stopped abusing my powers a while ago, you're just finding reasons to take it away from me. If you don't give it back to me, however, I'm just going to request it again. This time around, I'll earn it without telling anyone to support me like I did the last time, and I'll post the link on my user page. Again, that's if you refuse to give it back to me. Also, you being the only bureaucrat here is not really a good idea, and I suggest you promote Shadowcrest to that rank. He's as neutral as neutral gets, and doesn't pick and choose his favorite users like you do. I hope this didn't offend you at all, I'm simply trying to understand why your hatred for certain users is so strong. Blue NinjakoopaTalk 19:49, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Um, I'm really not taking sides here, but technically, it's not his fault, BNK. SZL actually informed him (KP) of this, and C. Hawk was just saying that his signatures were fine (in a way) until the new policies were confirmed (SW:SIGN, SW:NOTE, etc.). I didn't see much "bashing" on C. Hawk's end. MarioGalaxyTalk 19:53, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

OK, what the hell? The comment on not getting laid wasn't directed at you. If anything, it was me being self deprecating. Seriously, stop taking everything people say so personally. Second, you lost your rollback rights because you used them in a repeated edit war and then went and got yourself banned. And even if Shdaowcrest was a bureau, I doubt he'd give them back seeing as he's the one who banned you. I'm not trying to make you look like an idiot in the forums, I'm making my own points. If they happen to contradict yours, well that's the risk you take in the forums. Also, don't give me this whinny shit that you just blow up at people "because that's who you are and you can't change it." Guess what, I have a short temper as well. That doesn't mean that I get to call everyone who pisses me of a fu&^#ng douchebag like I may want to. It's each person's responsibility to control him/herself, regardless of the temper s/he has. And it really should be easier on the internet, considering you have to type the stuff, read it on the screen and then hit send before it goes up. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 20:21, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

@MG: Stop snooping. You get on everyone's nerves when you do that.
@Clarinet Hawk: The way you said "stop taking everything so personally". Wow. You're out to get me and now you think I take offense. It annoys me, C. Hawk. Who cares if Shadowcrest banned me? Better him than you. Your short temper is nothing compared to mine, and you know it. "I can't change"? What the fuck is that? You just refuse to accept the fact that I'm easily angered, so you try to bait me all the time with your partner, Semicolon. And who's whining? You're the one being a bully, abusing your powers the way you do. Oh, and I'm quite sure I don't need any advice on how to use my own damn computer, thank you very much. Blue NinjakoopaTalk 22:19, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Oh, trust me, there's no doubt that you're easily angered. It's perennially amusing that you think everyone else has to change rather than just you. That's called being extraordinarily self-centered. Oh, and I'm not his pawn. We just happen to think alike. Semicolon (talk) 23:41, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Nice assumption? You really like making up shit, don't you? I have changed, you see. The old BNK would have done exactly this: "**** YOU ******* PIECE OF **** WHAT THE ****!?!?!?!". I've yet to press caps lock once, except for in the example I gave you. Blue NinjakoopaTalk 23:44, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Form of...a troll! Honestly? I think I'm gonna start calling you Helen Keller. You're blind to your own shortcomings and deaf when people start telling you about them. If you're being honest about changing, great! But it's not enough. You need to get to the point where your first instinct is to reach for the Cognac and THEN the mouse. Drown the hate in the booze, my friend. Once you're mollified, come up with clever yet deprecating ways to disparage opponents of your views. Caps lock really doesn't do anything. Bold is where it's at. Semicolon (talk) 23:49, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
What the hell does Helen Keller have to do with anything, Semicolon? If you'd stop spamming "you", then maybe this could be resolved quicker. I know it's me who gets angry, get over yourself. And stop making these silly red herrings (srsly, mice? cognacs? WTF?). Now I know how Shadowcrest feels... Blue NinjakoopaTalk 23:52, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

If this is about following policy, why don't we all start following SW:NPA? Miles (talk) 22:28, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
First, you need to tell Sky to stop butting in on conflicts between others. It's none of his business. And don't call me "Koopa", because I'm a human being. Blue NinjakoopaTalk 22:29, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
It would have made no difference if he had called you "Xavier," and you should realize that was an abbreviation of your username, not a slight. Wikis are public, and you're arguing on a bureaucrat's talk. My point here is not to flame you; it's to show you that you're overreacting. Miles (talk) 22:32, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
You'll probably take this as an insult (?), but the admins here could learn from you. Oh, and don't call me by my real name please. Sky can call me BNK or Blue, Koopa sounds low (sorry). Blue NinjakoopaTalk 22:35, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
I'll take it as a compliment, I suppose. That's becuase I know better than to lose my temper. It's something everyone on the internet should learn. Then we'd have a better place, IMO. And sorry about the username issue. If you don't want it out there, though, take it off your userpage. Miles (talk) 22:38, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
I want people to know my real name, I just don't want them to sound like my mother by calling me by it all the time. Blue NinjakoopaTalk 22:45, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

You know what BNK, it's actually irrelevant who's temper is worse. What is relevant is who has control over it. You obviously don't, and continually use it as an excuse for repeated personal attacks. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 23:40, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
