I believe the numbers you're pulling up are the combined unique entrants for every game (Melee singles/doubles, Smash 4 singles/doubles, and Smash 64 singles/doubles) The bottom of this page shows the actual number for Melee singles (which is, as of this writing, at 818 entrants).
