Re: Spirit Battle inspirationEdit

"I don't exactly hear those complaints from the other Spirit pages that I've done with Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Game & Watch, R.O.B, and PAC-MAN." As I've learned myself the hard way, a lack of complaints does not necessarily equate to approval; someone may still voice opposition later down the line, and today that voice is mine. In the case of Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong, the lists of Spirit Battles are long enough that I haven't had the time to go through them and pick out what does or does not work; Metroid is simply the one that I got around to checking out today.

In the forum discussion leading to the addition of Spirit Battle inspiration, the addition of highly speculative "inspiration" was brought up as a potentially major concern. Prior to your edits, most inspiration added to these pages tended to be clear references; tenuous connections or long-reached stretches are frowned upon and are often removed when noticed by other editors. However, your edits try to justify every single detail in the Spirit Battle, often to the point of making vague connections that occasionally do not make sense. For example, "The Attack Power ↑ is a reference to the Parasite Queen's main method of attack by firing a laser from its mouth." How is this a reference? The Parasite Queen's mouth laser doesn't boost its attack power in Metroid Prime. In another instance, you claim that the Geemer battle's "third battle condition is a reference and a joke on the Geemers being an evolutionary offshoot of the Zoomers", which is just plainly a silly stretch to make. These are just two of many examples you've added. Just like with alternate costumes, it is not our job to find possible inspiration for every detail in the spirit battles; just to state those that are clear and obvious enough.

You also completely ignored me when I stated that some of your edits are factually incorrect and contain errors. For example, the inspiration column originally stated that Geemers are found in Brinstar in Metroid, explaining the stage and music choices. You changed this to state that the stage and music reference the Geemer's debut in Metroid Prime, which is completely false (Brinstar isn't in Metroid Prime, the Brinstar music isn't in Metroid Prime, and Geemers didn't debut in Metroid Prime). Similarly, you changed Kraid's inspiration to say that the music and stage reference his Super Metroid appearance, when the Brinstar Depths music isn't in Super Metroid at all. These are not the only errors you've made, but you reinstated them all when you reverted my edit.

Furthermore, your writing style simply bloats the column. You add a lot of unnecessary extra wording that doesn't add much. For example, do we really need to say "choice" in nearly every single bullet, or specify "the choice of" a particular puppet fighter, when it would be more concise just to drop that word/phrase altogether? And then there are details that aren't necessary; for example, we don't need to go into detail about how X Parasites are parasitic organisms that absorb memories, kill their hosts, and are enhanced to become Nightmare when none of those details are represented in the Spirit Battle. Just stick to what is necessary. Less is more. And believe me, I have a tendency to write a lot more than necessary!

This is why I reverted most of your edits to the Metroid Spirits page (however, please keep in mind that I did keep the additions that I thought would work to the page's benefit). Speculation, errors, and bloated wording are not constructive to SmashWiki and have been grounds for reverted edits plenty of times in the past. So please, do not undo my edit again. I do not want this to become an edit war. --PeabodySam (talk) 22:04, February 5, 2020 (EST)

Fine. You can take out the excessive unnecessary "inspirations" if they're too bloated, and you can tone it down for anyone else all you want. Maybe if we even worked together about how to present these "inspirations" so they're short and sweet, but also detailed before, then we would prevent the precipice of an editing war. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Autismo555 (talkcontribs) 10:38, 6 February 2020 (EST)

I feel you may need a reminder. Most of your edits only bloat the sections with any possible thing you can find as a reference, no matter how minor or insignificant it is. For instance I don't believe "The puppet fighter's red coloration is a reference to Loid's shirt being colored red" is worthy of trivia, spirit battle trivia should be short and concise clear-cut references.   Omegα Toαd, the Toαd Wαrrior. I’m cutting out the coloration trivia for that reason, unless the fighters’ alternate costumes are based off of the color schemes of certain characters (i.e. Diddy Kong’s Dixie Kong color scheme, Link’s Fierce Deity costume, etc.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Autismo555 (talkcontribs) 06:59, March 3, 2021 (EST)

List of SpiritsEdit

What are you editing in the spirit list pages? SonDaniel   (talk page) 17:25, May 18, 2020 (EDT)

PeabodySam and I discussed the Spirit Battle inspirations columns. When I read up on the Spirit Battle placements in the World of Light, it seemed less clustered and bloated,so I decided to use that.Autismo555 (talk) 17:27, May 18, 2020 (EDT)
How can I help? SonDaniel   (talk page) 17:29, May 18, 2020 (EDT)
That's very thoughtful of you, but I have it all handled. Thank you for the offer.Autismo555 (talk) 17:32, May 18, 2020 (EDT)

Header templateEdit

Why are you changing the header templates back to the old version? The template makes the pages more manageable on mobile and desktop. --CanvasK (talk) 21:20, March 29, 2021 (EDT)

Oh, I'm sorry, I thought since you were having trouble with the header templates, you reverted them. I'm sorry, I misread your intentions.Autismo555 (talk) 21:22, March 29, 2021 (EDT)
You can go ahead and revert the header templates back, but not the recent edits I made. I'm still working out the "puppet fighters" areas and more. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Autismo555 (talkcontribs) 21:22, March 29, 2021 (EDT)
(edit conflict) It was the row template I had issue with. The header is fine. If I had issue with it I would've reverted it back while reverting the rows. --CanvasK (talk) 21:24, March 29, 2021 (EDT)
I got you. I'm sorry. On a side note, do you think my idea for an inspiration column for enhanced spirits is good to go or no?Autismo555 (talk) 21:26, March 29, 2021 (EDT)
I have little-to-no interest in more inspiration columns. I'd personally hold off on any trivia/inspiration that isn't battle related, especially since the idea for "other trivia" was only a part of YoshiRyu's proposal and neither his proposal or that part got widespread support. --CanvasK (talk) 21:38, March 29, 2021 (EDT)

This edit (and others following it)Edit

Why did you add back a lot of the things that I removed? A lot of it is just plainly obvious stuff that isn't a reference (all of the KH music is from KH1, so, for instance, "Hand in Hand" being used isn't a reference to Kairi's debut), and some of it is just generic stuff that doesn't belong in that section (such as the mention of Riku's and Terra's battles transitioning/starting in their respective Dive to the Heart). I really don't like the formatting of the spirit battle section, and I tried to clean it up with more readable information, but that's kinda difficult if you just revert it back. Aidan, the Spooky Rurouni 11:47, October 19, 2021 (EDT)

Believe me, I hate the format of the spirit battle inspiration column myself. If I could, I'd add a collapsible row to showcase the spirit battle inspirations, but the only thing standing in the way is CanvasK and his insistence that the change would be decided by popular vote, which I fully support.
As for the "plainly obvious stuff" as you'd call it, I'm trying to break down each spirit battle by fact. Blatantly explaining the intricacies of a spirit battle with merged bullet lists and a long explanation of what the spirit battle represents makes it look bloated AND unsightly, especially in this cramped format. I'm trying to make the spirit battles more readable this way until something is done about the inspiration columns.
And besides, not all spirit battles have plainly obvious stuff. Have you seen Mii Gunner for Sukapon? The costume looks nothing like Sukapon or his creator.Autismo555 (talk) 12:38, October 19, 2021 (EDT)
I'm talking less about the format, and more the breaking down of it point by point. It feels unnecessary, almost like there's a break in the reading, and this is especially the case when points could easily be merged together (like what I did with Riku). The cramped nature of the columns may make it seem bloated, but it's not actually taking that much space up in terms of information. Given that I doubt anything can be done about the size of the column, I don't think we'll be able to escape the cramped space anytime soon.
That said, outside of this wiki, I have done it in such a way that the information in the column is collapsable (rather than the column itself), by way of <div class="contentbox mw-collapsible mw-collapsed" data-expandtext="Show" data-collapsetext="Hide">. I've actually been using that code in a "{{hidden}}" template, so maybe I could try setting that up.
My point wasn't that every spirit battle had plainly obvious stuff (obviously there's going to be references that are made that aren't obvious to non-fans), but rather that we don't need to outright note blatantly obvious stuff that isn't a reference, like "The stage transitions to Riku's Dive to the Heart station." Spirit Battle Inspiration (again)Edit

Hi Autismo555, it seems you haven't noticed my response to your recent edits, which I posted on Talk:List of spirits (Metroid series). The tl;dr version is a reminder to keep concise, stay relevant, avoid speculation, and accurately represent facts, which is echoing many of my comments from our last discussion about this. --PeabodySam (talk) 12:42, October 2, 2022 (EDT)

Hi Peabody. I am sorry if there is some inconvenience, but if you look at the Metroid spirits talk page, you'll find my response and reasoning.Autismo555 (talk) 14:27, October 2, 2022 (EDT)

Your editsEdit

Hi there.

Multiple users, including myself, have confronted you about your edits to spirit pages. These edits have ranged from inserting speculative statements that focus on loose, coincidental connections, increasing the word count of individual points to unnecessary levels, and even putting up objectively false statements, and you revert their removal for no given reason. These edits have been happening since 2020, and they persist even to today. I (and presumably others) have only not taken care of them due to lacking both knowledge of other series to verify claims, and time to actually go through the pages and check every little thing to make sure it's up to the standard of the wiki, so I want to make something incredibly clear: this stops now. If it continues, you will be banned for adding speculative statements (which we have a policy against doing), adding false information, and overall not contributing to the wiki in a positive way. Aidan the Lovely Gamer 17:04, February 5, 2023 (EST)

Wow. What a way for you to word this strongly-worded note regarding information that even I wouldn't have known would be speculative. If you can think of any speculative information in the other spirits pages, I would have you inquire me about it first before sending a message sounding so… I can't think of the right word other than "strong". Other than that, you can remove any and all speculation from the spirit battles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Autismo555 (talkcontribs) 18:55, February 5, 2023 (EST)

You have been "inquired" about with your edits plenty enough already, shape up and stop shitting up the spirit pages. Omega Tyrant   19:18, February 5, 2023 (EST)
"What a way for you to word this strongly-worded note regarding information that even I wouldn't have known would be speculative."
Really? You, in no way, think that making a baseless connection between two unrelated characters from two unrelated franchises isn't speculation? Because that's exactly what I see in the second edit I linked to in my message, and I know for a fact that I'm not the only one who thinks so.
"If you can think of any speculative information in the other spirits pages, I would have you inquire me about it first before sending a message sounding so… I can't think of the right word other than "strong"."
Except, here's the thing, I did. I'll provide it again, if you so desire.
Need I also remind you that, on this very talk page, you have been called out for speculation before:
"Prior to your edits, most inspiration added to these pages tended to be clear references; tenuous connections or long-reached stretches are frowned upon and are often removed when noticed by other editors. In another instance, you claim that the Geemer battle's "third battle condition is a reference and a joke on the Geemers being an evolutionary offshoot of the Zoomers", which is just plainly a silly stretch to make."
As said by the very user I'm quoting, "it is not our job to find possible inspiration for every detail in the spirit battles; just to state those that are clear and obvious enough." You have claimed to feel compelled to separate information point by point because of how it feels clumped together, when it's been shown that you are in the minority in that opinion, and that multiple people believe that what you are doing to these pages is a detriment to the wiki. Having your own opinion is fine, and the end goal here is not to drive you away from SmashWiki, but if these edits don't stop, then there will be consequences, because this has gone on for long enough. Aidan the Lovely Gamer 19:32, February 5, 2023 (EST)
You know what? I agree this has gone for long enough. You might as well delete my account right now and get it over with if you can. Sorry I wasted my time looking for the reasoning behind the Spirit Battles. >:( —Preceding unsigned comment added by Autismo555 (talkcontribs) 20:43, February 5, 2023 (EST)
