I totally didn't steal this from Draco. (And actually, this kinda makes us even, but that's an inside joke.) Like his list, these are some characters that I would like to appear in a Smash game, but, in actuality, they have a very little chance of actually showing up.

Curious about the series that each character comes from? Check this out.

—Introduction tagline

Wendy (ウェンディ, Wendy) is Aidan's favorite character in Fairy Tail, surpassing every other character with ease. Satomi Satō and Brittney Karbowski, her voice actresses from the Fairy Tail anime, would reprise their roles.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff How can you say no to that face?
  • Nerf She's an anime character.
  • Nerf And on that note, she isn't even the main character in her series.

Character description

400 years prior to the events of Fairy Tail, five young orphaned children were chosen to learn Dragon Slayer Magic and be sent into the future to the year X777 to help stop the reign of Acnologia. Wendy Marvell was among these five, and was adopted by Grandeeney, the Sky Dragon. Wendy was used as a vessel by Grandeeney to keep her soul alive and come out when needed, like the other Dragons, but Wendy had thought she had left her, and thus wandered aimlessly until running into a young Mystogan. Afraid of being alone after meeting someone, Wendy followed Mystogan across the land of Fiore, until Mystogan started acting strangely and deemed his journey too dangerous for Wendy. He left her in the hands of Roubaul and the Cait Shelter guild, who would raise Wendy for many years.

In the year X784, Cait Shelter would partner with three other guilds - Fairy Tail, Lamia Scale, and Blue Pegasus - to defeat the Oración Seis, a powerful group of six wizards with the intent of unleashing the evil Nirvana magic. After the six were individually defeated, along with Nirvana, the group of wizards celebrated in Cait Shelter, before shocking news arose: the Cait Shelter guild was entirely fake, made up by Roubaul after being told by Mystogan to give Wendy a home. After a tearful goodbye to the fading guild, Erza Scarlet comforted her, and asked if she would like to join the Fairy Tail guild instead. Wendy graciously accepted, and was later made an official member of the Fairy Tail guild.

Attributes

Wendy, as a Dragon Slayer, is very powerful. She can use weak attacks in her standard moveset, and finish it off with one of her more powerful special moves. Her moveset is mostly original to Smash, but some attacks are based on her Sky Dragon Slayer Magic from Fairy Tail.

Final Smash Sky Dragon Roar
(天竜の咆哮, Roar of the Sky Dragon)
40% Charges up her Sky Dragon Roar, before unleashing it on her opponents.

Taunts

  • Up Taunt: Puts her hand up to her mouth and giggles.
  • Side Taunt: Turns towards the screen, tilts her head, and winks.
  • Down Taunt: Carla appears, and the two high five.
    • Smash Taunt: If Wendy is in a team battle, using a smash taunt in any direction allows Wendy to chant "Swift wind, stalwart light, and steel resolve of the heavens combine! Enchantment!" ("イルアームズ! イルアーマー! イルバニーア! エンチャント!") and cast Ile Arms, Ile Armor, and Ile Vernier, doubling the damage given, halving the damage taken, and doubling the speed stats (respectively) of anyone on Wendy's team (including herself) for a total of 60 seconds. This can only be used once per stock. Should Wendy have all her lives depleted before the 60 seconds are up, the effect goes away immediately. Wendy also can be interrupted, which results not only in no stat boosts, but it also uses up her chance until the next stock.

On-Screen Appearance

Carla flies in, and drops Wendy onto the field. Wendy waves as Carla takes off, then prepares for battle.

Idle Poses

  • Looks around, curious.
  • Fixes her hair.

Crowd cheer

Wen - dy!

Victory Poses

  • Celebrates by running around, before splatting on the ground; she then does an "anime sweat", while laughing.
  • Performs a Sky Dragon Roar, and then turns around and giggles.
  • Spins around, hugging Carla, and says "Yay! We did it!", with Carla saying "Good job, Wendy!". Should the player have Happy as their custom up special, Wendy will instead hold Happy. Should the player have Panther Lily, Wendy will instead hold Panther Lily. Happy and Panther Lily will say, respectively, "Great job, Wendy!" and "Heh. You did well."
    • If Wendy wins in a team with Cloud, during the victory pose, she will look at him and state, "...You look familiar...", and Cloud reacts in confusion. This references Sting Eucliffe, of Fairy Tail, who bares a resemblance to Cloud. Coincidentally, Cloud's Japanese voice actor, Takahiro Sakurai, also voices Sting in Fairy Tail.

Victory Fanfare

The song Triumphal Victory from Fairy Tail. Like the Final Fantasy victory theme, it plays continuously, replacing the results theme.

Trophies

Wendy
The Sky Dragon Slayer, Wendy. She may be young, but she's a force to be reckoned with. Wendy used to be shy and weak, but thanks to her friends in Fairy Tail, she became the strong fighter she is today. In Smash, her standard attacks can be used to rack up damage quickly, and then one of her special moves can be used to finish it off. And her friend Carla is there to support her every step of the way!
Fairy Tail (08/2006)
Wendy (Alt.)
Wendy's side special, Sky Dragon Crushing Fang, is more powerful at her fingertips, so landing it while you're close is key. Her down special, Sky Dragon Talon, can be used to send airborne opponents crashing down. Finally, her up smash, Sky Dragon Tornado, releases a powerful tornado upwards, launching anyone who dares to touch it. And don't count on Wendy healing you if you're at high damage.
Fairy Tail (08/2006)
Sky Dragon Roar
Every dragon has its roar; this one just happens to be Wendy's. She gathers up air, and then releases it in a powerful gust that literally blows your opponents away. It is arguably Wendy's most powerful attack. I wonder who the dragon that appears in the background is...

Kirby gains Wendy's hair, albeit cut (as a reference to the Tartaros arc), as well as her Fairy Tail insignia on his right arm.

Trivia

  • Wendy is the second character to share a name with another character, the first being Roy.
    • Coincidentally, both characters share a name with one of the Koopalings.
  • Outside of Wendy's moveset, there are a few references to the main Fairy Tail series:
    • Wendy's customs becoming Fire Dragon and Iron Dragon variants are in reference to Natsu Dragneel and Gajeel Redfox, who, like Wendy, are Dragon Slayers (and use Fire and Iron, respectively).
    • Wendy's first victory pose, as well as her tripping animation, is a reference to her first appearance in the series, where she comes running to meet Natsu and the others, but falls flat on her face due to tripping on the ground. Because of this reference, she is the only character where her tripping animation doesn't have her land on her rear.
    • Wendy's second victory pose comes from a filler episode in the anime that focused on Wendy, where, at one point, she performs a Sky Dragon Roar on a sand tornado (and thus dispersing it), and, after receiving compliments from her fellow guild members, turns around and giggles.
    • Wendy's stunned animation is in reference to one of the Fairy Tail OVAs, where a few female characters (Wendy included) find alcohol to drink, and, after taking some herself, Wendy lays dizzy on the floor, stating how her "head is spinning" (which she has a chance of saying); in addition, this joke is repeated in the Fairy Tail Christmas special manga, and Wendy is seen laying dizzy on the floor once more, stating how she sees "all the pretty stars" (which she also has a chance of saying). Because of this reference, she's the only character whose stunned animation doesn't involve her standing up.
      • Additionally, this makes her the only character to say a full phrase while stunned.
      • However, if Wendy is stunned in a way other than a shield break, such as a Deku Nut, she will have a normal stunned animation, which makes her the only character with two stunned animations.
    • If Wendy is under the effects of a Super Mushroom, her voice closely resembles the somewhat deeper voice of her Edolas counterpart.
    • The dragon Wendy's Final Smash trophy is referring to (and thus, the one in the attack) is Grandeeney, the dragon that raised Wendy as a child.
      • Grandeeney appearing is a reference to how, in Fairy Tail, when Natsu uses a Fire Dragon Slayer spell, Igneel, Natsu's parent dragon, appears in the background, mimicking the attack.
    • Uniquely, Wendy's model changes when she gains a Smash Ball; her hair color changes to pink (regardless of what alt she is using), and it stands up, and she gains a more angered expression, as well as a set of wings on her back, and bracelets and anklets in that same style. This is a direct reference to Wendy's Dragon Force form, with Dragon Force being a more powerful form that Dragon Slayers can tap in to.
      • In addition, Wendy's taunts and idle animations do not play, referencing Wendy's more serious nature while in Dragon Force.

Shadow Blasts In!
—Introduction tagline

Shadow (シャドウ, Shadow) is a character from the Sonic series who deserves playability status in Smash. His respective voice actors from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, Kirk Thornton in English, Kōji Yusa in Japanese, Benoit DuPac in French, Klaus Lochtove in German, Manuel Gimeno in Spanish, and Claudio Moneta in Italian, would reprise their roles as Shadow.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff He's definitely one of the more popular Sonic characters (in contrast to Mr. Talks-a-Lot over there).
  • Buff I mostly made this as a counterargument to all the people who bitch and moan about "OH SHADOW WOULD JUST BE A SONIC CLONE", because no, he wouldn't. I didn't even include Super Shadow in here.
  • Nerf He's already kind of an Assist Trophy, which doesn't really bode well for his chances of making the cut. But what the hell do I know?
  • Nerf He's a third party character.

Character description

Shadow was created to be the ultimate life form by using Black Doom's DNA. Shadow's main purpose was for Gerald Robotnik to find cures for deadly diseases (most notably, the one in his granddaughter, Maria), but Shadow was taken in by the military when he was deemed to be a threat to humanity.

Attributes

Contrary to popular belief, Shadow is not a clone of Sonic; in fact, the two only share three moves (and even those have their differences). However, Shadow and Sonic, similar to their appearances in their own series, share many similar attributes, such as running speed (albeit Shadow is slightly slower).

Side special Dark Rider 10% Similar to Wario's side special, Shadow gets on his bike and rides. It too can be destroyed.
Up special Chaos Control 0% Teleports using a Chaos Emerald.
Down special Chaos Spear 15% Fires a spear of energy straightforward. If used in midair, he shoots it diagonally downward.
Final Smash Chaos Blast 20% Unleashes a Chaos Blast. Despite the low damage it gives, it actually has very high knockback.

  • Up Taunt: Reloads his gun. This refills the amount of bullets he can use in his neutral special.
  • Side Taunt: Puts on shades and exclaims, "I'm the coolest!”
  • Down Taunt: Crosses his arms and scoffs.

On-Screen Appearance

Speeds in, then screeches to a halt.

  • Comes roaring in on his bike from the left side of the screen, before speeding off into the distance.
  • Looks around, saying, "Where's that damn fourth Chaos Emerald?"
  • Crosses his arms, saying, "Hmph...fine."
    • If Sonic is present in the match, Shadow instead says "You're not even good enough to be my fake."

Trophies

Shadow
The ultimate life form, Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow was created by Dr. Eggman's grandfather a long time ago, but has since become an ally of Sonic the Hedgehog. In his origin game, Shadow was almost a look-alike of Sonic. In Smash, it's somewhat similar; Shadow and Sonic share a couple of moves. However, their special moves are very different.
Sonic Adventure 2 (06/2001)
GameCube: Shadow the Hedgehog (12/2005)
Shadow (Alt.)
Shadow's down special fires a special spear at the opponent. It knocks them back a fair distance, and it goes diagonally downward when used in midair. His up special is Chaos Control, where he teleports himself elsewhere on the field. Be careful for a surprise attack from Shadow.
Sonic Adventure 2 (06/2001)
GameCube: Shadow the Hedgehog (12/2005)
Chaos Blast
The Chaos Emeralds give life to everything, but sometimes, they can take it away. For Shadow's Final Smash, he gathers up his energy, and unleashes it in a powerful blast that KOs opponents surprisingly early. However, with precise timing, it can be dodged, so watch out.
GameCube: Shadow the Hedgehog (12/2005)

Alternate costumes

  • Default – Shadow's recent design, from the newer Sonic games.
  • Purple – Based on Rouge the Bat.
  • Red – Based on E-123 Omega.
  • Blue – Based on Sonic.
  • Cyan – Humorously has on Maria's dress.
  • Orange – Based on Tails.
  • Silver – Based on Silver.
  • Boom – Based on Shadow's appearance in Sonic Boom.

Kirby Hat

Kirby gains a hat with Shadow's spikes, similar to Sonic.

Trivia

  • Shadow has a few references to his home series:
    • As a callback to Shadow the Hedgehog, G.U.N. can be used while riding the Dark Rider.
    • His second victory pose is a reference to the iconic scene from Shadow the Hedgehog.
    • His third victory pose is a reference to his select animation from the Mario & Sonic games. The special quote for Sonic, on the other hand, is a reference to the famous scene from Sonic Adventure 2.
    • His side taunt is a rerecorded line from his first fight against Sonic in Sonic Adventure 2.

Yacker Colors the Fight!
—Yacker's introduction tagline

Yacker (ヤッカー, Yacker) is a Wisp from Sonic Colors. Aidan made a moveset for him, even though there's basically no chance he'll ever appear in a Smash game, even as a cameo. His voice actress from Sonic Colors, Utako Yoshino, would reprise her role; the announcers from Sonic Colors, Roger Craig Smith and Fumihiko Tachiki, also would reprise their roles for calling out Yacker's special move names, albeit reusing clips from Sonic Colors and Sonic Lost World.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff More Sonic representation, I guess?
  • Nerf He's a third party character.
  • Nerf He's a side character from one Sonic game. Sure, he's reappeared in other games, but still.

Character description

Yacker, like the rest of his race, was pulled into Eggman's Incredible Interstellar Amusement Park, to be turned into Nega-Wisps for a mind control ray. However, upon befriending Sonic, Yacker and the other Wisps are able to put a stop to Eggman's plans.

Attributes

Yacker is meant to play as an homage to Sonic Colors, which heavily focused on the new Wisp abilities. This is reflected in Yacker's moveset; Yacker's standard attacks do not deal that much damage, but his special moves can quickly rack up damage and launch opponents. Yacker's neutral special, Red Burst, covers a fairly large area and can even give him a boost, increasing his already big recovery thanks to Orange Rocket; Orange Rocket itself can bury grounded opponents and meteor smash aerial opponents. Cyan Laser also launches him in a desired direction, further increasing his recovery. Yacker's outstanding recovery, however, is harshly countered by an extremely low weight (even lower than that of Jigglypuff), meaning that he cannot take as much damage as other characters. However, Yacker hovers above the ground, meaning that certain attacks (such as Marth's down tilt) will not hit him normally.

Moveset

Name Damage Description
Neutral attack 5% Performs a headbutt.
Forward tilt 7% Spins forward.
Up tilt 6% Thrusts his arms up.

Pummel 2% Yacker headbutts the opponent.
Forward throw 7% Yacker pushes the opponent forward with his head.
Back throw 7% The two White Wisps throw the opponent behind Yacker.
Up throw 4% (hit 1), 6% (hit 2) Yacker performs a loop-de-loop that hits twice.

Custom 2 Black Bomb 5% (hit), 30% (explosion) Much slower, but upon pressing the button again, a huge explosion occurs.
Up special Default Orange Rocket 14% Flies upwards in a straight line. Can be angled slightly.

Idle Poses

  • Loops around.

Crowd cheer

Victory Poses

  • Spins upwards, before posing.
  • The other Wisps spin in a circle, and Yacker comes spinning through.
  • Yacker and the other Wisps leap up and pose, similar to the end of the opening to Sonic Colors.
    • If Sonic is on a team with Yacker, he will also be present in this victory pose, leaping and posing with the Wisps.

Victory Fanfare

The Level Clear jingle from Sonic Colors.

Trophies

Yacker
Yacker is a White Wisp with a notable curl of hair on his head. He, along with the other Wisps, was captured by the evil Dr. Eggman to be transformed into Nega-Wisps and used for a mind control ray! After Sonic saved the Wisps, it seemed like he would never see them again...until now! In Smash, Yacker can use the other Color Powers in combat. He's not very good at taking damage, though...
Wii: Sonic Colors (11/2010)
Yacker (Alt.)
Yacker's up special, Orange Rocket, sends him sky high at a rocketing speed. He can even angle the move slightly to bring him closer to the stage. His down special is the complete opposite; Blue Cube sends him crashing down on his opponents, launching anyone who gets hit. His side special, Cyan Laser, sends him forward at a blinding speed, and anyone who gets hit is blown back. Make sure you don't fall off the stage, however.
Wii: Sonic Colors (11/2010)
Final Color Blaster
Unlimited Colors! This attack was used by Sonic against the Nega-Wisp Armor, but now Yacker uses it for his Final Smash. Instead of certain Wisps, however, this time, ALL the Wisps come to help! However, if Yacker misses, he's left open for a little while, so if he gets the Smash Ball, RUN!

Kirby Hat

Kirby gains Yacker's antennae and curl on his head. Like Mewtwo, this follows the color that Kirby is set to. Unlike Yacker, Kirby calls out the name of the Red Burst attack.

Trivia

  • Red Burst, Cyan Laser, and Orange Rocket each use their respective jingles from Sonic Colors when activated.
    • Similarly, when chosen, Yellow Drill and Green Hover use their respective jingles from Sonic Colors when activated, and Black Bomb, Crimson Eagle, and Gray Quake use their respective jingles from Sonic Lost World when activated.
  • Yacker's helpless animation mimics Sonic's skydiving pose, fitting in line with how the ability sends Sonic into the pose when using Orange Rocket.
  • The Crimson Eagle custom move is the only custom move (or special move, for that matter) that grants the ability to glide to a character that normally doesn't have it (in this case, Yacker).
  • The order of Yacker's alternate costumes is the same order the Wisps are called out in for Final Color Blaster in Sonic Colors for the Wii.

Phoenix Wright Takes the Case!
—Introduction tagline

Phoenix Wright (成歩堂 龍一, Ryūichi Naruhodō) is the main character from the Ace Attorney series, one of Aidan's favorite video game franchises. He fights alongside Maya Fey (綾里真宵, Mayoi Ayasato), who kinda acts like a mix between the Pikmin and the Pokémon Trainer. Both Phoenix's and Maya's voice actors from the recent Ace Attorney games would reprise their roles; Sam Riegel and Abby Trott in English, and Takayuki Kondō and Satomi Hanamura in Japanese.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff The Ace Attorney series is one of Capcom's most popular franchises.
  • Buff Phoenix Wright has actually appeared in a fighting game before, that title being Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
  • Nerf He's a third party character.
  • Nerf He doesn't actually fight. Even characters like Wii Fit Trainer and Duck Hunt have physical attacks; Phoenix just throws papers and shit.

Character description

Phoenix Wright grew up as an only child. He once told Apollo Justice that he was raised in a barn, in order to explain the untidiness of his hospital bed, although he was most likely joking about this. At one point in his life, Phoenix broke into a cattle ranch and tipped some cows.

One day during fourth grade, Phoenix was accused of stealing the lunch money of a classmate, Miles Edgeworth. Due to the lack of an alibi, everyone assumed Phoenix was the culprit, but Miles and another classmate, Larry Butz, came to his defense. Miles asserted that Phoenix could not be proven guilty without evidence. The three became inseparable friends after that. It was revealed, 15 years later, that, even though he had not been in school that day, Larry had in fact been the one who stole the money. At the time, Miles took strongly after his famous father Gregory Edgeworth, a legendary defense attorney. The class trial would be a powerful inspiration for Phoenix during his legal career. After the DL-6 Incident, which resulted in his father's death, Miles transferred schools and moved out of town.

Phoenix studied art and law at Ivy University. During his time there, he saw a story in a newspaper with the headline "Dark Suspicions of a Demon Attorney". The article said that prosecutor Miles Edgeworth was suspected of tampering with witnesses and fabricating evidence. Miles had become a ruthless prosecutor, unrecognizable from the Miles that Phoenix knew from his childhood. Phoenix attempted to contact him, but he was ignored. Phoenix decided that if he became an attorney, Miles would have to meet him sooner or later in court, and then Phoenix could save him from his problems.

In his third year, Phoenix met Dahlia Hawthorne in the District Court basement library and was immediately enamored with her. She wrote him a poem and gave him a bottle necklace, telling him that it was a symbol of their love. They subsequently began to date, though in all subsequent meetings and unbeknown to Phoenix, "Dahlia" was really Iris, Dahlia's twin sister who was posing as her. For eight months, she tried to convince Phoenix to give the necklace back in order to save his life from her murderous sister, but Phoenix, not knowing of this reason, refused to, thinking that she didn't mean it. During the course of these eight months, Phoenix would enjoy his time with his girlfriend, who knitted him a pink sweater, made him mini omelettes which he loved, and had lunch with him everyday. However, things would soon change, as the true Dahlia Hawthorne was getting impatient.

One day, Phoenix lost his cold medicine. Later that day, Doug Swallow, a former lover of Dahlia's, met Phoenix and told him that she was dangerous. She had stolen poisonous chemicals from his lab before, and now some chemicals were missing again. Horrified by Doug's blasphemous statements, Phoenix pushed him onto the ground, and Doug fell onto his umbrella, breaking it. Phoenix then left, but a few minutes later, a crowd began to gather around where Doug had fallen, and Phoenix returned to the scene to find him dead, with Phoenix's cold medicine in his hand. Phoenix was accused of the murder and put on trial. Phoenix's lawyer was Mia Fey, a rookie at the time who had not taken a case since her first a year before. Phoenix didn't cooperate with Mia at first, lying that he hadn't known the victim. One of the prosecution's witnesses was Dahlia herself, which Phoenix found hard to believe. Mia eventually accused Dahlia of the murder, and claimed that the necklace had actually contained a poison used to incapacitate another individual inside the courthouse on the same day in which Dahlia and Phoenix had met. Phoenix could take no more of this and ran out of the courtroom. By the time he was forced back inside, he had eaten the necklace.

Mia then told Phoenix that he would have to believe in her if he wanted to avoid a conviction. Phoenix finally cooperated and gave his entire account of the day's events. Mia eventually showed that Dahlia had originally intended to kill Phoenix by poisoning his cold medicine, but after seeing Phoenix's encounter with Doug, she had changed her plan and killed Doug instead, intending to frame Phoenix. Phoenix got a not-guilty verdict, but he still couldn't believe that Dahlia had betrayed him, and even suggested that the Dahlia Hawthorne he saw in that courtroom had been a fake. Mia told him to move on with his life. Mia's defense of Phoenix inspired him to pursue law full-time, and he came to receive his attorney's badge with number 26381. Meanwhile, Dahlia was convicted and sentenced to death.

After receiving his law degree, Phoenix became a pupil of Mia and a member of Fey & Co. Law Offices. In his first case, he successfully defended his childhood friend, Larry Butz. When Mia was murdered, her sister Maya Fey was put on trial, and Phoenix finally met Miles in the ensuing courtroom battle; Phoenix bested Miles in his first loss ever. Phoenix then inherited Mia's firm, renaming it Wright & Co. Law Offices, and took on Maya as an assistant. Phoenix took Miles on again in another case, in which television star Will Powers, who played the Steel Samurai in The Steel Samurai: Warrior of Neo Olde Tokyo, was accused of murdering Jack Hammer, who played the Steel Samurai's nemesis, the Evil Magistrate. The case saw a child on the witness stand, and Phoenix managed to avoid a deadly encounter with the mafia. The court found Will Powers innocent in Phoenix's third consecutive win, although this time it was with Miles's help that the true killer was found.

Phoenix then found himself defending his rival in the murder of defense attorney Robert Hammond. The prosecutor was Miles's mentor and adoptive father Manfred von Karma, who would do absolutely anything to maintain his 40-year perfect record. Phoenix's investigation of the murder uncovered the whole story behind the unsolved DL-6 Incident, which had resulted in the death of Miles's father. It would turn out that Manfred von Karma was the killer in the DL-6 Incident, and that he had instigated Hammond's murder as well.

After this last case, Maya felt that she was now a burden and left to train to improve her spirit medium abilities. Phoenix stopped taking cases after Maya left until Ema Skye came into his office looking for help, as her sister Lana Skye had been accused of murder. With Ema's forensic science tools such as fingerprint dusting and luminol testing (for blood), Phoenix was able to uncover the truth behind not only the murder but also the events that had led to it two years ago in the SL-9 Incident. Phoenix faced Miles again in court, and they worked together to take down the real killer behind both incidents.

Attributes

Phoenix Wright, quite fittingly, is a more defense-oriented character. His main gimmick is finding evidence to support his case, which can be picked up in his down tilt. He can pick up a photograph, a cell phone, an autopsy report, a knife, a flower vase, and a watch, being able to hold up to three pieces of evidence at a time. He can then use them in his side special, Evidence, to keep opponents at a distance. He can also find invalid pieces of evidence, which are a piece of ham, a bonsai tree, a toilet plunger, a pair of glasses, a bottle of grape juice, an NES, a Servbot plush, and a Steel Samurai statue. While the ham can heal Phoenix Wright by 2%, the other pieces of evidence do nothing, and he can discard these by also using his side special (albeit tapping the button instead of holding it). His neutral special, Objection!, also doubles as a reflector (as if he was objecting the projectile itself), which also keeps opponents away from him. However, if an opponent should get close to him, he can use his down special, Psyche-Locks, to paralyze them and get away. Overall, Phoenix Wright is a very unorthodox fighter, with hitboxes to match, so fighting both as and against him will make both players think about how to utilize him properly.

  • Side Taunt: Phoenix takes some papers out and sorts through them, before putting them back. Maya humorously attempts to look over.
  • Down Taunt: Phoenix straightens his tie and points while saying, "Your Honor, the defense is ready!"

On-Screen Appearance

Phoenix appears on-stage, going over papers with Maya quickly, before pointing.

Idle Poses

  • Phoenix puts his hand to his chin, as if in thought.
  • Phoenix taps his foot impatiently.

Crowd cheer

English: Phoe - nix Wright!

Japanese: Na - ru - ho - do!

Victory Poses

  • Maya begins to throw confetti, and Phoenix looks around at it, before scratching the back of his head. He will either say, "You gotta learn to keep cool under pressure! That's the mark of a great lawyer!", or "Wow... Looks like I won the case, Maya!". With the latter, Maya responds with, "Great job, Nick!".
    • If he defeats a villain (who isn't an antihero), he will instead say, "In battle, it's not a question of guilty or not guilty."
    • If he beats Professor Layton, he will instead say, "You've still got a lot of tricks up your sleeve, don't you, Professor?"
  • Maya says, "Another victory for Wright and Co. Law Offices!" and leaps in the air while Phoenix scratches the back of his head, before a cup of coffee randomly hits him out of nowhere (hitting him right as the screen shows his name), and Maya reacts with a shocked expression on her face.
  • Phoenix straightens his tie, looks confidently towards the camera, and points while shouting his famous "Objection!". The "Objection!" line plays right when the screen shows his name.

Victory Fanfare

A remix of the song "Won the Case!" from Ace Attorney. Like the Final Fantasy victory theme, it plays continuously, replacing the results theme.

Steel Samurai Maya Smelting
There are two things you should never do: use the name of the Steel Samurai in vein, and upset Maya Fey. You'll learn why in this attack, where Maya charges forward and unleashes her fury upon you. Luckily, Maya gets tired out easily, so this attack won't last long in the grand scheme of things.

Order in the Court
It's every lawyer's worst nightmare to lose the case they're in, but Phoenix's worst nightmare literally is the judge! This attack only comes out if Phoenix doesn't have the right kind of evidence to use against his opponent. Luckily, the judge is nice enough to knock out any wrong evidence he may have, so you can get back on your feet and start again.

Alternate costumes

  • Default – Phoenix and Maya's appearances in the main series.
  • Red – Phoenix's coloring is based on Miles Edgeworth. Maya's coloring is based on Mia Fey.
  • Green – Phoenix's coloring is based on Dick Gumshoe. Maya's coloring is based on Franziska von Karma.
  • Orange – Phoenix's coloring is based on Larry Butz. Maya's outfit is reminiscent of Maggey Byrde in her Trés Bien waitress outfit.
  • Teal – Phoenix's coloring is based on Godot. Maya's coloring is based on Kay Faraday.
  • Yellow - Phoenix's outfit is based on Sissel, the protagonist of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (another game made by Ace Attorney series creator Shu Takumi). Maya's outfit is based on Lynne.
  • Pink – Phoenix's outfit is replaced with his outfit from the first case of Trials and Tribulations. Maya's coloring is based on Iris. The alt is actually different between Japan and the rest of the world. In Japan, the lettering on Phoenix's sweater reads "RYU", and his shoes have "N" and "R" on them; in all other languages, the sweater has a simple "P", and his shoes have a "P" and "W" on them.
  • Gray – Phoenix's outfit is replaced with his outfit during the events of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. Maya's coloring is based on Trucy Wright.

Kirby Hat

Kirby gets Phoenix Wright's hair and suit. As Kirby also gains Phoenix's speech bubble in Objection!, it changes its appearance depending on if the language is set to English or Japanese.

Trivia

  • Phoenix Wright is one of two characters to have three Final Smashes, with the other being Chun-Li.
    • Worth noting is the fact that both can activate each in different ways; in Phoenix's case, the Final Smash is dependent upon how much and what kind of evidence he possesses at the time of using his Final Smash.
  • Phoenix Wright's moveset holds several nods to the Ace Attorney series:
    • His up smash is a reference to the fact that Phoenix can present his attorney badge as evidence both in and out of court, despite it being useless towards the current case he's in.
    • His neutral aerial is a reference to the first case of Trials and Tribulations, where Phoenix had a cold.
      • As such, when he uses the move in his Trials and Tribulations alt, the mask he wears will fly off before returning to normal. This is purely aesthetic, and does not affect the hitbox of the move.
    • A character caught by Psyche-Locks has their colors inverted for the duration of the paralyze effect. This is another nod to the Ace Attorney series, where the background has its colors inverted when Phoenix presents his magatama.
    • His losing animation shows him distressed and sweating, a reference to a similar reaction he sometimes has in the Ace Attorney games.
    • When Phoenix trips, the game plays a completely different and much more comical sound, referencing the humorous side to the Ace Attorney series.
      • The sound itself is reused from Phoenix's Slip-Up attack in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, with Phoenix even shouting like he does in that game.
  • The various pieces of evidence that Phoenix can pick up have hidden details:
    • The cell phone is actually Maya's cell phone.
    • The photograph's texture is randomized, changing to a different photograph from a different Ace Attorney case each time.
  • The different pieces of invalid evidence that he can pick up, save for the NES, appeared as invalid evidence in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
  • Because Maya appears in five of Phoenix's attacks while not having a hurtbox herself, this makes Maya a disjointed hitbox.
  • If Phoenix gets knocked around the map, Maya will watch his movement, and wince if he gets KO'd. She will even look away from or at the screen if he's Star KO'd or Screen KO'd, respectively.
  • If Phoenix loses all of his stocks, Maya will sit down, sulking, and eat ramen (in the Japanese version) or a burger (in international versions).
  • Maya's English voice actress, Abby Trott, performed the English version of Lifelight; hilariously (and by complete coincidence), Maya herself is a spirit medium.

Jinx Gets Jinxed!
—Introduction tagline

Jinx (ジンクス, Jinx) is possibly the only League of Legends character that Aidan knows how to "properly" use (next to Annie and the occasional Ashe). Jinx's voice actress from League of Legends, Sarah Anne Williams, would reprise her role.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff We could use a Harley Quinn kind of character in Smash.
  • Buff She can switch between a semi-automatic gun and a rocket launcher whenever she pleases. Nuff said.
  • Buff For all the League of Legends fans on the wiki surprised by my choice, I chose to give Jinx a fully fledged moveset over any other character simply because I had more options with her. The most common example I like to use is Ashe: while she has options for a neutral special (her Q move), side special (her W move), down special (her E move), and Final Smash (her Ultimate, or R move), what would be the up special? You could have a generic spell like Flash, but in my opinion, it's pretty generic and doesn't have much connection to Ashe as a whole. Jinx, on the other hand, not only has an extra move to fill in to allow for one of her abilities to be placed in the up special slot (in her case, Get Excited!, her passive, is her neutral special and Zap! is her up special), but also has two different weapons, Pow-Pow and Fishbones, and has an actual move (Switcheroo!) that lets her switch between them. In the long run, I chose Jinx over God knows how many champions League has simply for uniqueness.
  • Nerf League of Legends is a PC game. What's gonna happen next, Tracer? Scout? Murloc? The Adventurer?

Character description

Jinx lives to wreak havoc without a thought for consequence, leaving a trail of mayhem and panic in her wake. A manic and impulsive criminal, she despises nothing more than boredom, and gleefully unleashes her own volatile brand of pandemonium to the one place she finds dullest: Piltover. With an arsenal of deadly toys, she unleashes the brightest explosions and loudest blasts - all the better to shock and surprise the hapless authorities. Always just out of the law's reach, Jinx's favorite game is to toy with Piltover's finest - especially Vi.

Piltover had long been known as the City of Progress, a place where peace and order reigned. That serenity was challenged when a new kind of criminal arrived, the likes of whom had never been seen. This mysterious outlaw unleashed a series of warped and destructive capers that endangered the entire city, and left its people reeling from the worst crime spree in Piltover's history.

As the string of crimes without rhyme or reason hit the city, sightings of the lawbreaker emerged. Though the young woman's origins were a mystery, some saw traces of Piltover hextech in her firearms, while others described the street fashions of Zaun in her dress. Because her arrival always brought trouble with it, those who crossed her path soon gave her a name: Jinx.

Jinx's rampage escalated. Caitlyn - the sheriff of Piltover - responded by declaring a state of emergency and organizing a city-wide manhunt. In typical Jinx fashion, the criminal marked the Piltover treasury, the city's most secure building, with a direct challenge to its most abrasive officer. With a caricature of Vi's face splashed across the treasury's facade, and with a time and date of her supposed raid, Jinx was openly daring the enforcer to stop her from robbing it.

Determined to put the troublemaker behind bars, Vi watched and waited outside the treasury until Jinx's time had finally come. True to her scrawled promise, the smiling menace showed her face. Knowing this was her chance to capture the outlaw, Vi gave chase into the building's interior. She smashed through wall after wall to chase down Jinx, who giggled as she lit up the evacuated treasury with fiery explosions. Vi finally cornered the criminal inside the vault, but Jinx wasn't done just yet. With a maniacal laugh, she fired a barrage of rockets, bringing the entire building down upon them both.

When Vi finally crawled out of the ruins, the battered enforcer found no trace of Jinx. Adding insult to injury, not a single ounce of gold had been taken from the ruined vault. Instead, the criminal left a parting message to her favorite officer of the law - a challenge only now visible through the gaping opening in Piltover's skyline. The lights of the city spelled out a simple taunt: "you'll never catch me". As Vi read the message, she heard the distant laughter of her new nemesis, and the city plunged into utter darkness for the very first time.

Attributes

Jinx has a similar playstyle to her appearance in League of Legends. As a marksman, she has high escapability, despite having low movement speed, but she also falls under the category of "glass cannon". Her playstyle also changes depending on which weapon she is holding; Pow-Pow can be used for chip damage quickly, but is not really good at KO'ing. On the other hand, Fishbones can be used to KO opponents sooner and deals more damage, but is much slower. Some of her standard moves are unchanged, but her moveset mostly focuses around the two guns. Additionally, she has a mana system in place, similar to Hero, with 245 mana; the meter slowly recharges over time, as it does in League of Legends. All rockets from Fishbones, Flame Chompers!, Zap!, and Super Mega Death Rocket! use up mana, and, like Hero, attacking normally fills up the meter. Rockets from Fishbones cost 20 mana each.

While Jinx does have high escapability, she does have a notably poor recovery move in terms of Zap!; however, she is able to use a braid as a tether, albeit from a limited range (about the same as Link's clawshot).

It's worth noting that her special moves are unaffected by the change in weapons.

Side special Flame Chompers! 12% Jinx sends out a Flame Chomper, which explodes on contact or after a few seconds. If the button is tapped, she tosses it forward; if the button is held or she's running when using the attack, it will be placed where she currently is. Costs 70 mana.
Up special Zap! 9% Jinx sends an electrical blast in a desired direction. Similar to Egg Throw in terms of a recovery move, but it gives no boost. It is able to slow down opponents by 30% for two seconds. Costs 50 mana.
Down special Switcheroo! 0% Jinx switches between Pow-Pow and Fishbones, changing some of her standard moves entirely.
Final Smash Super Mega Death Rocket! 40% Jinx fires a giant rocket forward, only detonating if it hits a playable character (or a wall). Costs 100 mana.

Taunts

Jinx's up taunt can go on indefinitely, as long as the taunt button is held.

On-Screen Appearance

Jinx lands in a pose with Fishbones face-up, based on the ending of her Recall animation in League of Legends. In her Star Guardian costume, she instead flies onto the stage and poses, based on the ending of that costume's Recall animation.

Idle Poses

Jinx is unique in that her idle poses chance depending on which weapon she has.

Pow-Pow:

  • Brushes her hair to the side.
  • Pulls out a section of Pow-Pow, before jamming it back in, extending the barrels of Pow-Pow; she then shoves Pow-Pow into the ground muzzle-first, before letting it go and launching it into the air.
    • In her Star Guardian costume, she instead brushes off her arm, before stomping, and looking up maniacally.

Fishbones:

  • Spins one of her long braids in a circle.
  • Takes Fishbones and has a conversation with it, before punching it out of frustration. Humorously uses it as if it were a puppet.
    • In her Star Guardian costume, she instead grabs and hugs Shiro, before grabbing and hugging Kuro as well.

Crowd cheer

Jinx! Jinx! Jinx!

Victory Poses

  • Jinx climbs on Fishbones, before riding it like a rocket as it launches itself, while saying "Three, forty-one, nine and lift off!". Based on her animation for using Recall in League of Legends.
    • If Jinx is in her Star Guardian costume, the victory pose will change to her Recall animation in that costume, and instead saying "I'm taking my guns and going home."
      • In this costume, if she wins against another Jinx in her default costume, she'll instead say "Got to say, I don't miss my old guns at all."
  • Jinx sits down at a table and winds up a cymbal-playing monkey, before letting it run.
  • Brings both of her guns out, before showing them off by jumping around.
    • If Jinx is in her Star Guardian costume, she will slam Shiro and Kuro together, before tossing them away and blowing a kiss, based on the ending part of her taunt in the costume.

Miscellaneous

Phrases spoken

Jinx, unlike all other characters, speaks completely unrelated phrases occasionally while attacking or moving. The quotes themselves are rerecorded lines from League of Legends; Jinx also has differing lines in her Star Guardian alternate costume, matching the treatment given to the skin in League of Legends.

Trophies

Jinx
Jinx is a criminal, wrecking havoc in Piltover through vandalism and other nasty things. In Smash, she brings her two main weapons: Pow-Pow, her minigun, and Fishbones, her rocket launcher. Using her down special can switch between the two guns, and they can even change her playstyle a bit.
League of Legends (10/2009)
Jinx (Alt.)
Jinx's main way of fighting is with her two guns, but she also has a few tricks up her sleeve. Her Flame Chompers can be used to surprise opponents, and her Zap can cause them to slow down. Her neutral special can then be used to let her get away quickly or go in for the kill. Keep these things in mind, and you'll have the match in the bag.
League of Legends (10/2009)
Super Mega Death Rocket!
Fishbones mostly launches minirockets, but for her Final Smash, Jinx launches the deadliest of rockets from Fishbones. This rocket will only explode if it hits a true opponent, but it can also hit walls and explode. It can also easily be dodged. So if Jinx gets the Smash Ball, be prepared to dodge at any moment.
League of Legends (10/2009)

Alternate costumes

Kirby Hat

Kirby gains Jinx's hair, complete with long braids (though they're notably shorter than Jinx's), as well as her tattoo.

Trivia

  • When Jinx gets KO'd, she may utter, "They...got me...", which is one of her death lines in League of Legends.
    • In her Star Guardian costume, she instead says, "Oh no. I'm dying.", in a very sarcastic manner; this is another death line from League of Legends, for her Star Guardian costume.
  • Jinx's second idle pose with Fishbones marks the first time a character speaks in an idle animation.
  • Jinx is one of two characters to solely have alternate costumes rather than recolors, with the other being Bowser Jr.; unlike him, however, Jinx remains the same character instead of changing into another character altogether.

Shovel Knight digs in!
—Introduction tagline

Possibly the most wanted Indie character for Smash (if not behind Shantae), Shovel Knight (ショべルナイト, Shovel Knight) is one of Aidan's favorite characters in gaming, and he figured he had to make a moveset of the shovelrous knight. As with Shovel Knight, Shovel Knight would remain silent.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff Shovel Knight is one of the most successful indie games of all time, and one of the most popular.
  • Buff Even Yacht Club Games supported Shovel Knight during the Ballot.
  • Buff The fact that he became an Assist Trophy in Ultimate means that Sakurai knows about him.
  • Nerf Shovel Knight actually took a while to get to Japan, so it's probably not likely to be as popular over there than over here. But then again, we had Little Mac in Smash 4, so...

Character description

Shovel Knight's early days as a knight mostly consisted of him and Shield Knight going on adventures together, and the two seemed to live a happy life. However, that all changed when the two adventured into the Tower of Fate, and a cursed amulet brought forth a terrible magic, knocking Shovel Knight out. When he awoke, the tower was sealed, and Shield Knight had disappeared. This would cause Shovel Knight to go into a deep depression and go into a life of solitude, which, in turn, would cause The Enchantress and The Order of no Quarter to rise. Realizing his job, Shovel Knight would leave his life of solitude and save Shield Knight from the curse.

Attributes

Shovel Knight functions similarly to his appearance in Shovel Knight. His primary weapon is his shovel, which allows him to perform both stabbing and digging attacks. His down aerial also gives him an infinite pogo hop, only ending if he touches the ground. However, most of his moveset revolves around his numerous relics from his home series, which can prove to be both unique and unorthodox. His neutral special, Flare Wand, sends forth a fiery ball, similar to Luigi's Fireball. His side special, Propeller Dagger, shoots him forward a set distance, knocking away opponents. His down special, Phase Locket, turns him invisible and transparent (meaning attacks pass through him) for a brief period of time. Outside of his special moves, his forward aerial utilizes the Dust Knuckles, which can boost him forward should he hit an opponent. His up smash, the Throwing Anchor, also works similarly to Simon and Richter's Axe, albeit as a smash attack. All of his relics use up a set number of magic, which is noted in the top right corner of his character icon, next to a tiny magic jar. Shovel Knight starts with a maximum of 100 magic, with each relic he uses bringing that number down. Unlike Hero and Jinx, Shovel Knight's direct attacks do not refill his magic capacity; rather, by using his neutral attack or neutral aerial, a magic jar will appear if the attack lands, which Shovel Knight can collect, though only one jar can be on the stage at a time. Other fighters are unable to interact with a magic jar, though another Shovel Knight may steal it for himself. A small jar gives him 5 magic, and a big jar gives him 30 magic, with each jar having an equal chance of appearing. Overall, Shovel Knight has a playstyle unlike any other.

The attack lasts for about 15-20 seconds.

Trophies

Shovel Knight
A knight full of honor, Shovel Knight took a hazardous quest to save his beloved Shield Knight. He found many Relics on his quest, and in Smash, he brings his Relics into the fray, along with his trusty Shovel Blade. Who would've thought that a mere gardening tool could be used to KO your opponents?
Wii U: Shovel Knight (06/2014)
Shovel Knight (Alt.)
The Relics Shovel Knight uses are quite diverse. His side special, the Propeller Blade, can be used to send him shooting forward. His down special, the Phase Locket, will turn him invisible, and if you attack him, he will strike back. His forward air can even be used to bring him closer to the stage!
Wii U: Shovel Knight (06/2014)
Shield Knight
When Shovel Knight went to save Shield Knight from the Enchantress, the evil energy was released, forming a giant entity that Shovel Knight and Shield Knight had to defeat only by working together. In Smash Bros., when Shovel Knight breaks open a Smash Ball, he calls upon Shield Knight once more, and the two work together to perform a stage-wide attack that shows just how strong this brave duo is!

Kirby Hat

Kirby gains Shovel Knight's helmet and shoulder pads. However, he does not gain his shovel.

Trivia

  • Shovel Knight features references to his game of origin outside of his moveset:
    • Shovel Knight's double jump animation is taken from the flip he performs when using the Ornate Armor.
    • Shovel Knight's crouch is near identical to his idle stance, with him merely bending his knees slightly as opposed to properly crouching, a trait he shares with Specter Knight.
    • When Shovel Knight is KO'd, golden bags of money fly into the air, before disappearing in a puff of smoke upon his respawning, referencing the death mechanics of the game.
      • In his orange costume, the bags of money are smaller and silver, referencing how the Final Guard armor allows Shovel Knight to lose less gold when dying in battle.

Ladybug Gets Her Spots On!
—Introduction tagline

Ladybug (レディバグ, Ladybug) is one of the two main protagonists in an obscure French cartoon that no one besides Aidan has probably heard of. Her voice actresses from the Miraculous Ladybug show would reprise their roles; Cristina Valenzuela in English, Anouck Hautbois in French, Laura Pastor and Jessica Ángeles in Spanish (PAL and NTSC, respectively), Letizia Scifoni in Italian, Lydia Morgenstern in German, and Karin Nanami in Japanese.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff Miraculous Ladybug is one of the most popular shows in France. It's also been very well received in other countries, including the US.
  • Nerf Despite this, the show is very obscure; I myself have only ever seen one ad for the show on television.

Character description

Ladybug, in her civilian form, is Marinette Dupain-Cheng, an ordinary high school girl notorious for her clumsiness. On her first day back at school, she helped an old man cross the street, who turned out to be the guardian of the Ladybug Miraculous. After her friend Ivan was akumatized by Hawk Moth, she returned home, scared of what was happening, when she spotted the box containing the Ladybug Miraculous. She put on the earrings, only to meet Tikki, a Kwami with the power to turn her into Ladybug. At first, she was reluctant, even considering giving it to her newest friend Alya, but after realizing that she needed to be the hero that Paris needed, she accepted her transformation. She also found that Adrien Agreste was attending her school, and while she first disliked him due to a misunderstanding, she soon found that she had a not-so-secret crush on him, but Adrien only views her as a friend.

Attributes

Ladybug is a unique character. While she is able to move around freely and quickly thanks to her attire, she also has a lot of range, thanks to her yo-yo.

Trophies

Ladybug
Long ago, the Ladybug Miraculous came around, and it would transform the owner into the superhero, Ladybug. This Miraculous found its way into the hands of Marinette Dupain-Cheng, who brings it with her to fight in Smash! Marinette, as Ladybug, uses her yo-yo to fight most of the time, but she can also use her power, Lucky Charm!
Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir (10/2015)
Ladybug (Alt.)
Ladybug's neutral special, Lucky Charm, gives her a random item that she can work with. It usually works to her advantage, but sometimes, she gets an item that can be explosive. Her other special moves make use of her yo-yo, such as Ladybug Trap, which catches the opponent's feet, causing them to trip.

Miraculous Ladybug
Lucky Charm brings Ladybug an item to use, but once she has no use for it, she uses it to unleash the power she keeps within her. Ladybugs are a sign of good luck, so this Final Smash does fix any wrong doings, but it also launches opponents in a colorful blast. One might even say it's miraculous!

Whenever she isn't saving Paris from the numerous villains, Marinette Dupain-Cheng is a normal schoolgirl. She deeply cares for her friends, and does not wish for anything bad to happen to them. She has her friends, and her rivals, but her dream is to get Adrien to like her the way she likes him...

  • Ladybug's introduction tagline is a reference to the line she shouts before transforming: "Tikki, spots on!".
  • Ladybug's grab and up throw are a reference to how she "de-evillizes" akumas in her home series, where she traps the akuma and purifies it with her yo-yo, before releasing it.
    • When using her up throw, Ladybug even says "Bye bye, little butterfly", as she does in the show.
  • If Lucky Charm is used when items are turned completely off, Ladybug instead gains a Capsule, which has a small chance of being explosive.
  • Items pulled from Lucky Charm are given a unique ladybug-like texture, referencing how Lucky Charm does a similar thing in the show.
    • The coloring of the texture changes depending on which alt she's using. If she is in her Marinette alt, it turns black with pink spots, as it does in Oblivio.
  • In Miraculous Ladybug, after Ladybug uses Lucky Charm, she has five minutes before she transforms back (as indicated by the five spots on her earrings). In Smash, no such time limit is present.
    • However, she can only have one item at a time.

—Introduction tagline

Cat Noir (シャノワール, Chat Noir) is the other main protagonist from the French cartoon that no one besides Aidan knows. His voice actors from the Miraculous Ladybug show would reprise their roles; Bryce Papenbrook in English, Benjamin Bollen in French, Jesús Barreda and Tomás González in Spanish (PAL and NTSC, respectively), Flavio Aquilone in Italian, Maximilian Artajo in German, and Ryōta Ōsaka in Japanese.

Character description

Cat Noir, in his civilian form, is Adrien Agreste, son of the famous Gabriel Agreste and a fashion model. He mostly lived a secluded life, surrounded by the luxuries of his mansion, but wanted to live a normal life like all the other kids. During one of his attempts to escape, he spots an old man weakly reaching for his cane, who turned out to be the guardian of the Cat Miraculous. After a commotion outside of his mansion involving an akumatized Ivan, Adrien noticed a box sitting on his table containing a ring. He put on the ring, and was surprised to find a Kwami named Plagg pop out of it, who explained that he had the power to turn Adrien into Cat Noir. Eager to be free of his father's confinements, Adrien immediately jumped on the transformation. During his first mission to save Ivan, he got off to a rocky start, but he learned bit by bit, just like Ladybug. He also developed a small crush for Ladybug, though she disregards his affections. He was also eventually allowed to go to school by his father, to start a life with friends as opposed to a trapped one.

Attributes

Cat Noir is a unique combination of the free movement granted to him by his attire, the range of his staff, and his claw attacks. Several moves are good for dealing damage up close, but some moves are more ranged.

Trophies

Cat Noir
Long ago, the Cat Miraculous came around, and it would transform the owner into the superhero, Cat Noir. This Miraculous found its way into the hands of Adrien Agreste, who brings it with him to fight in Smash! Adrien, as Cat Noir, uses his staff to fight most of the time, but he can also use his power, Cataclysm!
Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir (10/2015)
Cat Noir (Alt.)
Cat Noir's neutral special, Cataclysm, is said to bring bad luck to anything it touches. It can decompose even the most solid of rock, as well as malfunction the most secure of electric circuits. In Smash, it can break any platform (except for main ones), but it doesn't change the character you chose, so don't worry. Cat Noir isn't going to get banned.
Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir (10/2015)
Black Storm
While the Ladybug Miraculous harnesses the power of creation, the Cat Miraculous harnesses the power of destruction. When Cat Noir uses his Final Smash, he takes this to the extreme, and unleashes a powerful beam of negative energy from his ring. "Cataclysmic" is certainly a word to describe it...

Adrien
Whenever he isn't cracking puns while saving Paris, Adrien Agreste is a high school student who also happens to be a famous model. His father tries to keep him secluded from the world, but Adrien just wants to fit in. He has people he likes, and people he doesn't, but what he really wants is to find out who is under the mask of Ladybug...

  • Green
  • Purple – Based on Hawk Moth.
  • Cyan – Based on Bubbler.
  • Adrien – Cat Noir in his standard appearance, as Adrien.

Kirby Hat

Kirby gains Cat Noir's hair and mask. He adorably imitates Cat Noir's pose and call for Cataclysm.

Trivia

  • Cat Noir's introduction line is a reference to the line he shouts when transforming: "Plagg, claws out!".
  • Cat Noir's second victory pose references Cat Noir's apparent crush on Ladybug in the show.
  • Cat Noir's second idle pose is a reference to a scene in the episode Mr. Pigeon.

Valentine's the Last Hope!
—Introduction tagline

Valentine (ヴァレンタイン, Valentine) is a character from the 2D fighting game Skullgirls, who will probably never get into Smash because of her sexy appearance. (Then again, we got Bayonetta, so what the hell do I know?) Her voice actresses from Skullgirls, Laura Post and Asami Imai, would reprise their roles in English and Japanese.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff Skullgirls has proven to be a very popular 2D fighter, despite being an indie.
  • Buff Of all the characters within Skullgirls, Valentine's moveset fits the easiest into Smash.
  • Nerf Boobs. Panties. Blood. Need I say more?

Character description

Valentine, originally known as Valerie, was a member of The Last Hope, which consisted of her, Easter, Hallow, Christmas, and Patty. She, like the rest of her group, is named after a holiday; in her case, Valentine's Day. When Marie, the Skullgirl, defeated every member except for Valentine, she had no option but to join her and Double.

In Valentine's story mode, she takes out Lab 8 as well as Peacock, as that is what Marie had asked of her. But soon, she goes on a rebellion, defeating Marie. Knowing full well that wishing for The Last Hope to be revived would end in disaster, she instead wishes to become the Skullgirl herself.

Attributes

Valentine has multiple fast moves that can deal damage quickly, as evidenced with her forward smash and forward aerial. Her special moves are also quite diverse: Dead Cross offers a fairly long ranged projectile that curves downward, and Savage Bypass is a quick dash at an angle, similar to Wolf Flash. However, her greatest tool lies within Flew Shot; it has three different types, each with varying effects on opponents. A purple Flew Shot gives the opponent a flower effect, slowly increasing their damage; a green Flew Shot increases the opponent's hitstun, which increases the amount of time they have before they can make an action after getting hit; an orange Flew Shot gives the opponent input lag, which increases the amount of startup lag a move has before it comes out. Valentine can change the level that Vial Hazard is at before firing off Flew Shot, but only if the player presses the B button as opposed to holding it. However, her biggest flaw is her aerial mobility; like Ryu, Valentine's aerial mobility is near abysmal, lowering her survivability and movement in the air. Her falling speed is also as fast as that of Fox, hindering her ability to recover. All in all, Valentine is a character who, in most circumstances, should stay on the ground, and as such, can rack up damage quickly if she is kept there.

Moveset

Depending on the charge, the move has different effects: a purple syringe gives a flower effect, a green syringe gives increased hitstun, and an orange syringe gives input lag.
Up special Savage Bypass 10% Dashes upward, slashing with her bonesaw.
Down special Mortuary Drop 13% Seals her opponent in a body bag, then slams them into the ground for heavy damage.

  • Side Taunt: Pulls a thermometer out of her cleavage, and it explodes, before putting it back. Based on her winning animation from Skullgirls.
  • Down Taunt: Does a ninja-like stance.

On-Screen Appearance

As a nod to the "Second Encore+" update for Skullgirls, Valentine has multiple on-screen appearances.

  • Appears behind a hospital partition, before slicing it in half and posing. She then gets into her idle stance.
  • Backflips multiple times, before landing and getting into her idle stance.
  • Flies in with an open body bad as a parachute, before landing and getting in her idle stance.

Idle Poses

  • Tightens her gloves.
  • Stands up straight, and places her hand on her back, as if in pain.

Crowd cheer

Victory Poses

    • If she beats Dr. Mario, she will instead say, "What a joke."
  • Makes an explosion, leaving a pile of skeleton bones. Based on, interestingly, her losing animation from Skullgirls.
  • Appears to be eating a dark chocolate bar with her back turned, before turning her head around and saying, "What? Cheat day."

Victory Fanfare

The song Pick of the Litter from Skullgirls. Like the Final Fantasy victory theme, it plays continuously, replacing the results theme.

Trophies

Valentine
Valentine used to belong to a group known as The Last Hope, but when the Skullgirl, Marie, defeated all of them except for Valentine, it was her only option to join forces. Valentine may look like a nurse, but she has many ninja-like attacks, especially ones that use mementos from her fallen team. Don't be fooled by her seductive appearance, because Valentine can and will take you out if you're in her way.
Skullgirls (04/2012)
Valentine (Alt.)
Valentine uses many doctor's tools to fight, so she's a bit different from the other fighters. But that doesn't stop her from being effective in a fight. Her side special has her shoot a syringe full of venom towards her opponents, and her down special has them trapped in a body bag. Many of her attacks also use her bonesaw. Watch out for Valentine's arsenal.
Skullgirls (04/2012)
Dead on Arrival
The doctor is in! In this Final Smash, Valentine grabs an opponent in a body bag, and transports them to a hospital. The next thing they see is Valentine's one uncovered eye, before Valentine performs a quick yet bloody surgery on them. But don't worry: for those of you who are sensitive to violence and gore, you'll be happy to hear that the surgery isn't shown.
Skullgirls (04/2012)

Alternate costumes

All of Valentine's alternate costumes from Skullgirls appear, giving her a whopping 25 alternate costumes.

AidanzapunkValentinePalette.png

Kirby Hat

Kirby gains Valentine's hat, hair, and mask. He additionally will form an angered expression and assume a new standing animation nearly identical to that of the one seen in Kirby Squeak Squad after acquiring the Fighter Ability. However, while Valentine pulls the Dead Cross shuriken from her cleavage, Kirby pulls it out of hammerspace (because Kirby with boobs would be weird).

Trivia

  • Valentine carries several references to Skullgirls:
    • Valentine's second idle pose is a callback to one of her dislikes on the official Skullgirls website, which, humorously, is "back pain" (due to her large breast size).
    • As with Skullgirls, the lollipop that can randomly appear in Valentine's jab attack changes color depending on which alt is being used.
    • If Valentine is KO'd in Stamina Mode, the KO sound effect from Skullgirls can be heard.
    • When Valentine techs on the ground, she blurs for a moment, replicating her teching animation from Skullgirls.
    • Valentine's shielding animation has her hold up her bonesaw in defense, as she does in Skullgirls.

Viewtiful Joe (ビューティフル ジョー, Viewtiful Joe) is a character from the series of the same name, a personal favorite of Aidan's. In English, he would be voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, who portrayed him in the Viewtiful Joe games; in Japanese, he would be voiced by Tomokazu Seki, who portrayed him in the Viewtiful Joe anime.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff Viewtiful Joe was one of the more popular Capcom games back in the day, up there with Ōkami and Devil May Cry. (All three of which were made by the same guy, Hideki Kamiya, who would later go on to make the Bayonetta games.)
  • Buff Joe himself is a very capable fighter; his series is a beat 'em up, and he's appeared in both Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
  • Nerf He's a third party character, and probably one of the more obscure ones.

Character description

An action hero movie fan, Joe enjoyed all of the Captain Blue movies, even taking his girlfriend, Silvia, to one of them. However, on their date, Silvia was captured and taken into the movie; not long after, Joe himself was taken into the movie. He fought his way to Captain Blue in the first movie, with the help of his new V-Watch, but after winning, Joe was given his superhero persona: originally nameless, it was Alastor who persuaded (though not intentionally) the decision of the name "Viewtiful Joe".

Attributes

Viewtiful Joe, being from a beat-em-up series, carries a lot of fighting moves with him. He also has good usage of projectiles via his Voomerang and Shocking Pink Bombs, and is also able to get into a fight when he needs to. Uniquely, his Red Hot Kick can be used only in midair. He also has two neutral aerials, with one being a multi-hitting single attack, and the other being a large combo; the combo, however, only works when the button is mashed.

Back aerial 10% A backwards punch, similar to Captain Falcon's back aerial.
Up aerial 9% A flip kick.
Down aerial 12% A stall-then-fall drill kick, similar to Corrin's down air, but only hits once.

Side special Shocking Pink Bomb 2% (per hit; 5 hits total) Joe juggles a bomb with his foot, being able to kick it a distance. The bomb will start defusing only after he launches it, but juggling it longer means the fuse lasts for a shorter time.
Up special Drill Punch 14% Joe spins upwards in an inputted direction. Can only go upwards or diagonal, but not horizontal or downwards.
Down special Red Hot Kick 12% Joe does a flaming diving kick. He can only use this move in midair.

  • Side Taunt: Joe strikes a flexing pose, before throwing his hands and tauntingly laughing.
  • Down Taunt: Joe pulls out a bag of popcorn, sits down, and says, "This movie's great!"

Trivia

  • Viewtiful Joe has a few references to his home series:
    • His spot dodge animation is his regular dodging animation in his games.
    • When eating, Joe says "Yummy!", which is what he says when he eats a cheeseburger to regain health. He is one of three characters to speak when eating, the others being Snake and Wario.
    • His unmashed neutral aerial is a reference to his kick attack while in Zoom-In.

Professor Layton Puzzles the Competition!
—Introduction tagline

Professor Layton (レイトン教授, Professor Layton) is Aidan's number one pick for a Super Smash Bros. newcomer. His respective voice actors from the Professor Layton series, Christopher Robin Miller in English, Martial Le Minoux in French, Mario Hassert in German, Jordi Varela in Spanish, Oliviero Corbetta in Italian, and Yo Oizumi in Japanese, would all reprise their roles.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff The Professor Layton series is one of the most popular franchises on the DS and 3DS of all time.
  • Buff Even Christopher Robin Miller, the English voice of Layton, has supported (and joked about) the idea of Layton in Smash.
  • Nerf While there is the occasional combat scene, the Layton series isn't exactly centered around combat. It's like an interactive Scooby-Doo.
  • Nerf He's a third party character, despite being Nintendo console-exclusive.

Character description

Professor Hershel Layton was born under the name Theodore Bronev, before he was given his brother's name "Hershel" and adopted into the Layton family. His adoptive parents raised him to be an English gentleman, becoming very polite and brave. One of his friends in his college years, Randall Ascot, created his love of archaeology, which would go onto be his field of study.

Professor Layton is also an adventurer. In Last Specter, Layton received a letter from Luke Triton, and after a brief encounter with Emmy Altava, the two located him: he explained that he foresaw a specter destroying the town. It was later revealed that this "specter" was actually a manatee, but this adventure prompted Luke to join Layton for further adventures. Both of them did everything together from then on, and Layton even decided to give Luke pointers on how to be a proper gentleman.

Attributes

Professor Layton is, like Phoenix Wright, a very unorthodox fighter. He does use a sword, but several of his attacks are based on several aspects from the Professor Layton series.

Moveset

Neutral attack 3%, 4% Slices downward, and then upwards.
Forward tilt 6% Slices forward with his sword.

Forward smash 14% Pokes forward forcefully with his sword.
Up smash 12% Throws up the rabbit from Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, and it spins in the air.

Neutral aerial 8% Spins in the air, similar to Lucario's neutral aerial.
Forward aerial 8% Performs a horizontal outwards swipe.

Down aerial 10% Performs an arcing downwards swipe, akin to Cloud's forward aerial.
Grab Reaches with his left hand to grab an opponent.
Pummel 2% Knees the opponent.
Forward throw 6% Thrusts his sword towards the opponent.

Only one parrot can appear on the screen at any given time, and if he lands on a platform, he will jump up to two more times, before disappearing. He will also disappear upon falling off a stage.
Side special Bloom Burst 9% (per area) Waters the area in front of him, and four bursts of flowers come up individually. In the air, he can only make one, but it acts like a platform.
Up special Helicopter Ride 6% (per hit) Rides upward in the helicopter from Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva.
Down special Toy Car 3% Pulls out the Toy Car from Professor Layton and the Unwound Future. It functions similarly to Bowser Jr.'s Mechakoopas, except it does not explode. It knocks opponents up slightly, causing them to trip up at lower percents, and can lead to aerial combos at higher percents.
Final Smash Slot Machine Gun 5% (per hit) Builds the Slot Machine Gun from Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, and summons Luke, who fills the machine gun with coins, and Layton starts rapidly firing.

Taunts

  • Up Taunt: Tips his hat and says, "A pleasure to make your acquaintance."
  • Side Taunt: Puts his hand to his chin, as if in thought, then smiles and says, "This reminds me of a puzzle."
  • Down Taunt: Takes off his hat, dusts it off, and places it back on his head.

On-Screen Appearance

Drives onto the stage in the Laytonmobile, and gets out. The car will be in front of the stage if he is facing to the left, and behind the stage if he is facing to the right (referencing how it is an English car).

Idle Poses

  • Fixes his hat.
  • Puts his hand to his chin, as if in thought.

Crowd cheer

Lay - ton!

Victory Poses

  • Layton, in a chair, takes a sip of tea and states, "A gentleman leaves no puzzle unsolved."
  • Layton appears already looking through a magnifying glass, before finding a Hint Coin and putting both away.
  • Layton performs his series famous puzzle solving animation, with the screen appropriately fading in and out, with him finally pointing right when the announcer calls his name. He additionally says, during the animation, "Critical thinking is the key to success."
    • If Phoenix Wright was in the match, he will instead say, "Objection overruled, Mr. Wright."
    • If Phoenix Wright was on a team with Layton, one of two victory poses will play:
      • If Phoenix was the leader, both will do his "Objection!" victory pose, as a reference to Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.
      • If Layton was the leader, both will do the puzzle solved animation the duo has in vs. Ace Attorney. Both say, in sync, "Every puzzle has an answer."

Victory Fanfare

Professor Layton's fanfare is a bit peculiar. It is the Puzzle Solved jingle from the 3DS Professor Layton games, but it only plays once the announcer calls out his name.

Classic Mode: Professor Layton and the Smashing of Brothers

Each of Professor Layton's rounds make allusions or references to the plots of each mainline Professor Layton game. The name of the Classic Mode is a Smash Bros. spin on the traditional naming convention of the Professor Layton series.

Trophies

Professor Layton
A professor of archaeology, and a fan of puzzles. Professor Hershel Layton has gone on countless adventures around the world with his apprentice, Luke Triton, and has solved all the world's puzzles and mysteries, such as the mystery of the miracles of Monte d'Or, the wonders of eternal life, and the secret of the ancient Azran people. And yet, he always seems to have time for a cup of tea.

Professor Layton (Alt.)
Professor Layton's all about puzzles, so fighting him might be a bit perplexing if you don't know what to expect. His side special brings out the gardener inside him, and causes four bursts of flower patches to emerge from the ground, one at a time. If you use it in the air, however, only one will appear, and act as a platform for a tiny bit.

Slot Machine Gun
What do you do when you're stuck in a casino fighting a bunch of baddies? You build a slot machine gun, of course! In this Final Smash, Professor Layton calls his assistant, Luke Triton, and the two of them bring out this strange device that pelts any opponents who are in the way with slot machine coins. It may be a bit confusing, but hey, what happens in Smash stays in Smash.

Kenshin Wanders into the Fight!
—Introduction tagline

Kenshin (剣心, Kenshin) is a favorite character of Aidan's in Japanese media, after his mom found him a copy of the Rurouni Kenshin manga. In Japanese, he would be voiced by Mayo Suzukaze, his voice actress in all Rurouni Kenshin-related media; in English, he'd be voiced by J. Shannon Weaver, his voice actor from the animated Rurouni Kenshin movies and New Kyoto Arc.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff Rurouni Kenshin is certainly not an unpopular franchise.
  • Buff Kenshin himself has made an appearance in other fighting games such as Jump Ultimate Stars and J-Stars Victory VS.
  • Nerf He's an anime character.
    • Nerf On top of that, he's a literal anime swordfighter.

Character description

In the 1850's, during the end of the Edo period, Kenshin was known as "Hitokiri Battōsai", and was considered the most dangerous assassin in all of Japan. However, after the end of the war, Kenshin disappeared without a trace. No one had known what had happened to him, nor did they know where he was. It wasn't until eleven years later, in the Meiji period, when a wandering samurai was found walking through Tokyo with a sword by one Kaoru Kamiya, who was looking for the Hitokiri Battōsai who was using her father's swordstyle in vein. The samurai denied being such, even showing his sakabatō as proof, before commotion was heard just down the road. Kaoru chased down the perpetrator, but after she was attacked by a man claiming to be Battōsai, the samurai saved her from being killed. Battōsai fled the scene, as did the samurai and Kaoru, who returned to her residence, the Kamiya Kasshin-ryū dojo. The samurai questioned where this Battōsai was from, and while he was out, the Battōsai attacked the dojo. His brother was the stay-in doctor of the dojo, who was attempting to purchase it from Kaoru and destroy it. However, in the middle of the battle, the samurai reappeared, and proceeded to reveal that he himself was the true Hitokiri Battōsai: Kenshin Himura.

Attributes

Fittingly for the once famous Hitokiri Battōsai, Kenshin is a very quick fighter with powerful sword strikes. Though not on the level of Cloud, Kenshin still possesses fast attacks that are able to rack up damage quickly. Additionally, fitting his sakabatō's unique trait, Kenshin has a harder time KOing than most other swordfighters, though he still possesses enough power to KO them at a somewhat reasonable percent.

Trophies

Kenshin
Don't let this guy fool you - he may be a wandering samurai now, but Kenshin was once the legendary Hitokiri Battōsai, the most dangerous assassin in all of Japan. However, due to his sakabatō, he can't exactly kill anyone properly anymore. In Smash, he uses his famous Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū swordplay to intimidate opponents with his blinding speed.
Rurouni Kenshin (04/1994)
Kenshin (Alt.)
With an ancient kenjutsu style under his belt, Kenshin has a lot of powerful attacks at his disposal. His neutral special, Kuzuryūsen, is a quick dash forward that hits nine times and deals powerful knockback. His up special, Ryūtsuisen, allows Kenshin to leap into the air and come plummeting down, but causes more damage the farther Kenshin has fallen.
Rurouni Kenshin (04/1994)
Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki
The secret ultimate technique of Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū. When you activate this attack, a couple of kanji will flash on the screen - if you have a good eye, you'll see it's the kanji that spell out the attack - followed by a flash of light. This is immediately followed by a powerful strike from Kenshin, so if you were close to him at the start of the attack, you can only hope you survive the blow.

  • Black – Kenshin's right arm is bandaged and uncovered, exposing the right half of his chest, in reference to the Raijūta arc. His outfit is black, as a reference to the black and white coloring of the manga.

Kirby Hat

Kirby gets Kenshin's hair, complete with a ponytail, as well as Kenshin's famous battle scar.

Trivia

  • Kenshin holds a few references to his home series, outside of his moveset:
    • Sōryūsen is so fast that, if the player were to dodge the first hit of it, they will get hit by the second one regardless (though they can still block the attack by shielding). This is a nod to the move's first appearance, where Jin-e misread Kenshin's attack and only anticipated one strike (and therefore only dodged one hit).
    • One of Kenshin's pain cries and KO screams in the Japanese version is a comical "おろ?!", referencing how he often utters the phrase when in confusion. His hitstun animation is also accompanied by the iconic expression associated with the phrase.
      • Kenshin's stunned cry also uses a more dazed-sounding "おろ・・・", as a nod to the very first chapter and episode where Kenshin trips over some barrels after being discovered by Kaoru.
    • His side taunt is a reference to the Jin-e arc, where, moments before getting kidnapped, Kaoru lends Kenshin her ribbon, which he ties in his hair.
  • Despite the move being nearly unblockable in Rurouni Kenshin, Kuzuryūsen can be easily avoided in Smash, by both means of jumping over Kenshin or simply shielding. The latter option, however, breaks the shield if all hits land.
  • Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki is one of two Final Smashes that are able to be blocked by a shield, the other being Chun-Li's Hoyokusen.
    • This, however, is made up for by the fact that the second hit (which only activates if the initial hit is blocked) is entirely unblockable, much like a regular Final Smash.

  • Buff Danny is also a part of Game Grumps, one of the most successful video game YouTube channels.

Character description

Danny Sexbang and his partner Ninja Brian were born eons ago as mere legendary beings. Prophecies created would soon be fulfilled, either by putting an end to the Samurai Abstinence Patrol or to save the distant future from itself through Danny's personal way of solving problems. Danny decided at first to be a ninja, the first photographic evidence starting in 1978. After over 30 years in the business, Dan decided to quit his assassin career and begin focusing on his true dreams: music and getting all the attractive girls he can possibly have. His success rates are a hit and miss, having both ends of the stick happening in the end in his quest for lust.

Attributes

Danny fights unusually, to say the least. His unorthodox animations, combined with his extreme projectile game, make him one of the more complex fighters to fight against.

Trivia

  • Danny is the first Smash Bros. character to be based on a real human being.
  • Danny's moveset and other aspects feature tons of references to several Ninja Sex Party songs:
    • His forward smash is a reference to the song Dinosaur Laser Fight. One of his victory poses is also based on the ending to the song.
    • His up smash is a reference to Cookies!, with him even saying "Cookies!" when attacking in a similar way to the song.
    • His down smash and down throw both pull from First Date, more specifically the music video:
      • The down smash pulls from the line "you can watch me shoot cocaine into my eyes and rock a burglary", and is based on the animation associated with the line in the music video.
      • The down throw pulls from when Ninja Brian beats up "some guy" to the rhythm of the song.
    • His back throw pulls from when Ninja Brian appears behind the Council of Dick Elders to slice them in the back in 6969.
    • His pummel is a subtle nod to Road Trip.
    • His neutral special is based on the song Courtship of the Mermaid, where Danny, in an attempt to get the attention of a beautiful mermaid, throws a pizza at her. The pizza appears to have onions and ham on it, in reference to a lyric from the song.
      • His up special, similarly, is based on the latter half of the song where Danny deduces that, to get the mermaid's attention, he needs to be covered in pizza and thrown at the mermaid. This is also the basis for one of his victory poses.
    • His side special is based on the song Romance Novel, where Ninja Brian, disproving of Danny's romance novel, continuously throws pianos at him.
    • His down special references a line from Cool Patrol, where Danny instructs the kid to "rub your magnum thighs together and set fire to Mars".
    • His up taunt is a subtle nod to Orgy for One.
    • His side taunt has him pull out The Ultimate Sandwich.
    • His down taunt is a reference to No Reason Boner.
    • His second idle pose is a reference to the line "and then you take that funky butt and you shake it all around" from Cool Patrol.
    • His on-screen appearance is a reference to when he appears before the woman in 6969.
    • His crowd cheer is the same cheer heard in Danny, Don't You Know?, and is both the longest crowd cheer and the only crowd cheer to not repeat itself.
      • His introduction tagline is also a play on the song.
    • His tripping animation features food flying all around him, much like in Eating Food in the Shower.

Specter Knight Blights the Earth!
—Introduction tagline

Specter Knight (スペクターナイト, Specter Knight) is the second added playable character to Shovel Knight, following Plague Knight, and preceding King Knight.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff As previously stated, Shovel Knight is an extremely popular indie platformer.
  • Buff In comparison to Plague Knight, Specter Knight has more unique gameplay, and offers more variety than a simple character swap with different abilities. The game changes the levels completely, and even has different boss fights.
  • Nerf If any Shovel Knight character would get in, it would be Shovel Knight himself.

Character description

Specter Knight serves as the undead enemy in the Order of No Quarter. While his history is unknown in Shovel of Hope, it is expanded upon in Specter of Torment, where it is revealed that, in a past life, Specter Life went by Donovan, and was a warrior who went on adventures with his partner, Luan. The two set out on a quest to gain an amulet, but encountered Shield Knight, who insisted that the amulet was evil. Donovan fought Shield Knight for the amulet, which ultimately resulted in the death of Luan, and the creation of the Enchantress. The Enchantress, seeing how Donovan was still alive, commanded that he follow her every order in return for making him an undead warrior, turning him into Specter Knight. His quest was simple: gather eight knights from across the realm to serve under the Enchantress.

Attributes

Specter Knight uses his scythe in battle, and carries multiple Curios with him as well. Specter Knight also carries a unique mechanic with him, in the form of his recovery: his up special, Dash Slash, can be used repeatedly as long as an opponent is in front of him, but puts Specter Knight into a helpless state if he misses. He can also go downwards if the closest opponent is below him, but only in the air. In addition, he can wall jump, as well as walk a short distance on walls to gain height.

Trophies

Specter Knight
In life, Specter Knight was a warrior by the name of Donovan. He and his partner Luan sought an amulet that would protect Reize, Luan's son, only found in the Tower of Fate. Donovan fought Shield Knight for the amulet, who got affected by its powers, and became the Enchantress, killing Luan and nearly killing Donovan. She spared him, and turned him into Specter Knight, her "loyal" servant. In order to bring Donovan back to life, the Enchantress tasked him with finding a group of eight formidable knights: the Order of No Quarter.

Specter Knight (Alt.)
Specter Knight's powers come from willpower and darkness. He wields special items called Curios, which he can get from Red in the Tower of Fate. His side special creates a skeleton warrior that he can detonate if you use the input again. His down special creates a projection of himself in front of him, which increases your range, but the more you attack with it, the quicker it will go away.

Judgement Rush
One of Specter Knight's more powerful Curios, you can get this item during your recruit of Propellor Knight in the Flying Machine. When Specter Knight uses his Final Smash, he will grasp the item in his hand, and dash across the screen multiple times, hitting opponents as if he's homing in on them. Kind of reminds you of his fight against Shovel Knight, doesn't it?

Trivia

  • Specter Knight features references to Specter of Torment outside of his moveset:
    • His tagline references a splash line from beginning a level in Specter of Torment.
    • His dashing animation features him grinding on his scythe, which he can do on special rails normally; he can grind on any surface in his Rail Mail armor.
      • As a result, he has two different grounded jumping animations: his standard jump, and a jump where his scythe spins around at his feet that only plays when he jumps after dashing. Uniquely, this extra jumping animation continues into his dash, as it does in Specter of Torment. Double jumping, however, will not continue into the dash.
    • When Specter Knight is KO'd, green bags of money with bat wings fly into the air, before disappearing in a puff of smoke upon his respawning, referencing the death mechanics of the game.
      • In his green costume, the bags of money are smaller and blue, referencing how the Cloak of Clemency allows Specter Knight to lose less gold when dying in battle.
    • Specter Knight's crouch is near identical to his idle stance, with him merely bending his knees slightly as opposed to properly crouching, a trait he shares with Shovel Knight.

Chun-Li Kicks Things Into Gear!
—Introduction tagline

Chun-Li (チュンリー, Chun-Li) is the most iconic female character in not only Street Fighter, but perhaps the entire fighting game genre. As with the Street Fighter series from Street Fighter IV onwards, Chun-Li would be voiced by Laura Bailey in English (in spite of Ashly Burch's takeover in Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite), and Fumiko Orikasa in Japanese.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff One of the most influential women in video games, Chun-Li's impact on the fighting game community and video game community cannot be understated.
  • Buff Not to bash on Ken, but Chun-Li would offer a more unique playstyle.
  • Nerf She's a third party character.

Character description

At the age of five, Chun-Li saw her first classical Chinese play, Peking opera, and her first Bruce Lee movie, which fascinated her and also became part of the reasons why she started practicing martial arts.

She began by learning Tai chi. However, Tai chi was much different from the gorgeous movements she remembered from Peking Opera. Soon afterwards, her father taught her Hong Quan as well as various basic exercises from then on. With that, Chun-Li’s skills in Chinese martial arts improved rapidly. Chun-Li used mostly kicks when fighting. This was something she picked up from her father, who was also said to have "legendary legs." Chun-Li continued to develop her kick attacks, embracing techniques from a variety of fighting styles, such as Chinese martial arts, capoeira, battle karate, and taekwondo, thus eventually creating her own style.

Chun-Li would later become a detective at the age of eighteen in hopes of finding her missing father. She later followed in her father's footsteps and become a narcotics investigator at the I.C.P.O (International Criminal Police Organization), also known as Interpol, working as the organization's anti-Shadaloo investigator. Chun-Li was known as the "black sheep of the I.C.P.O.", as she was investigating Shadaloo for the illegal sales of narcotics and weapons when said evil organization got their hold of the high-ups of Interpol.

Chun-Li received an invitation to the second World Warrior tournament, and discovered that Bison had apparently survived the Thailand base's destruction. With this, she had the clear motive of destroying Shadaloo and avenging her father once again. During the tournament, Chun-Li and her allies manage to reach Bison and engage him in combat that reaches the forest. During their fight with Bison, They managed to overpower the Shadaloo dictator with Chun-Li weakening Bison with a powerful Kikosho that destroys part of the forest. When Guile urges Bison to surrender, Bison refuses and instead commits suicide by using all of his Psycho Power to make a huge explosion that blasted away, but didn't kill, Chun-Li and the other fighters who attempted to stop the dictator. With Bison's apparent suicide, the government exhaustively investigated Shadaloo's base and concluded that Bison and the other bosses had also died, despite no evidence being shown to prove that the cataclysm happened.

Attributes

Unlike her fellow Street Fighter characters, Chun-Li's attacks are based around Chinese martial arts, which gives her much more kick-based attacks rather than punches. Additionally, Chun-Li can wall jump, as she can in Street Fighter. However, she still follows the same basic "theme" that her predecessors have set in place for her, where her attacks change depending on whether the button is held or tapped, as well as certain moves changing depending on how far away she is from her opponent. She also carries a unique, new trait with her, where certain aerial attacks change depending on whether or not she is jumping in an arc (referred to in the moveset table as "diagonal").

Trophies

Chun-Li
Taught Chinese martial arts at a young age by her father, Chun-Li's "lighting legs" are famous in not just China, but the world over. She joined the Interpol Detective Agency to find her father, and was lead to a powerful organization called Shadaloo and their leader, M. Bison, who Chun-Li has had various fights with, particularly in the various World Warrior tournaments.
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (1991)
Chun-Li (Alt.)
A studier of various Chinese martial arts, Chun-Li uses a lot of different styles in her moveset. Hitting the attack button rapidly allows Chun-Li to use her Hyakuretsukyaku attack. Her down aerial attack makes both her and her opponent hop in the air, but be weary, as she can only use the attack up to three times at once.
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (1991)
Kikosho / Hoyokusen / Shichisei Senku Kyaku
If Chun-Li uses her Final Smash from a distance, she'll create a giant ball of qigong energy. If she's right next to an opponent, she'll instead unleash a flurry of kicks. If she's in the air, however, she'll dash forward and unleash a powerful kick that, of the three attacks, is the most dangerous attack in her arsenal.

  • Black - Based on Shadow Lady, a darker coloring of Chun-Li from Marvel vs. Capcom.
  • Blue - Based on her costume from Street Fighter Alpha.

Kirby Hat

Trivia

  • Chun-Li has several unique attributes separating her from her fellow Street Fighter characters:
    • She is the only one to possess a rapid jab.
    • She is the only one with the ability to wall jump.
    • She is the only one with three Final Smashes (being one of two to have such a trait, with the other being Phoenix Wright), and the only character in general to have a different Final Smash in the air.
  • Because Hoyokusen can be shielded (and, by proxy, perfect shielded), it is possible to recreate the famous "Daigo Parry" within the game.
    • This makes Hoyokusen one of two Final Smashes to be able to be blocked by a shield, with the other being Kenshin's Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki, and it was revealed that this was intentional specifically so the "Daigo Parry" could be recreated within Smash by perfect shielding each hit.

Madeline Climbs into Battle!
—Introduction tagline

Madeline (マデリーン, Madeline) is the main character of a phenomenal indie title, and one of Aidan's favorite games, Celeste. As is the case with her series, Madeline would remain silent in gameplay, but would speak in jibberish sound effects during her victory poses.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff Celeste did outstandingly well as a game; it was even nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2018, being the first and only indie title of the bunch.
  • Buff Madeline herself also guest starred in the Switch version of TowerFall, where she was given fighting abilities.
  • Nerf Despite all the praise Celeste gets, indie titles don't always have the best of luck in Smash.

Character description

Madeline, suffering from depression and anxiety, decides to take a trip to Celeste Mountain to try something new. Along the way, she meets Theo, a man from Seattle looking for a change of pace from his job. The two become close, interacting with each other along the way, and quickly learn of the mountain's mysterious powers, as Badeline, a personification of Madeline's self doubt, emerges from her and serves as an obstacle. Initially avoiding her and thinking she doesn't need her other half, Madeline turns Badeline away. This ends poorly, and Badeline fights back while avoiding Madeline in retaliation. Madeline braves her way to Badeline, reconciling with her, and determines that the two need to work together if Madeline is to ever reach the top of the mountain. The two pair up, giving Madeline an extra boost, and make it to the top.

Attributes

Like in her home game, Madeline can wall cling; unique to her, however, is the ability to climb up walls. She can only move for three seconds, even if she stops after initially moving, and when the time is about to run up, she will flash red, and when the time is up, she will slide down the wall. Should she not move at all, she can stay stuck for up to eleven seconds instead. As with regular wall clings, however, should she jump away during this time, the time will be halved.

Moveset

Name Damage Description
Neutral attack 3% (each punch) Punches forward twice.
Forward tilt 9% Spins, whipping her hair forward.
Up tilt 8% Headbutts above her.

Forward smash 12% Fires an arrow forward.
Up smash 13% Swings her bag in an arc above her.

If the jump button is pressed immediately after, she will leap farther, at the cost of dealing no damage; in the air, this also uses up her midair jump. If she dashes into a wall with this move and the control stick is held when she hits the wall, she will wall cling.
Up special Cloud Bounce 10% Summons a white cloud below her, and bounces upwards a great distance with the second press of the button. If the timing is off, Madeline will not gain a significant boost.
Down special Feather 11% Grabs a yellow feather, and dashes forward. The player can control her direction for a limited amount of time.

She fires off bursts of red energy when the B button is pressed, and charges up a laser when the B button is held, but moves to a different location when touched; if touched ten times, she goes away.

  • Side Taunt: A winged strawberry appears, and Madeline reaches up to grab it, before it flies away.

Trophies

Madeline
Madeline was a simple girl: she just wanted a change of pace. That's why she decided to try and climb Celeste Mountain. She didn't know what she was looking for, but what she found was probably the last thing she expected. The mountain's mysterious powers got to her, unleashing a side of her that she knew she had to work with in order to be successful and climb the mountain.
Celeste (01/2018)
Madeline (Alt.)
Madeline isn't exactly much of a fighter herself, but she does have a few tricks up her sleeve. Being a mountain climber, she has honed her ability to climb up any wall, which can come in handy when recovering. But if she needs an extra boost, she is able to dash in the air with her side special. Be careful - you only get two shots with that.
Celeste (01/2018)
Part of Me
When Madeline attempted to reason with her inner self, she started to attack Madeline out of fear. This time, however, Badeline uses that power to help out her other half. She can shoot orbs of energy, or she can charge up a homing laser. One must admit it is a bit unusual to see these two opposites fighting side by side, though, isn't it?

Trivia

  • Madeline features nods to Celeste within her attributes and other characteristics:
    • Madeline can wall cling for much longer than normal, having a record of eleven seconds, the same amount of time she can stay stuck to a wall in Celeste. She also carries her unique ability to climb up walls, which allows her to move for three seconds, one second short of the amount of time she can climb a wall in Celeste. However, the universal wall clinging rules still apply to her, such as the halving of the wall cling time if she jumps away.
    • Her up taunt alludes to Theo, a friend she makes during her climb. Theo takes selfies with Madeline during the times they run into each other, and even has his own Instagram account under the name @TheoUnderStars.
      • Madeline herself does not have a smartphone, as revealed in Chapter 2, so she instead uses a phone modeled after (and possibly is) Theo's phone.
    • Her side taunt includes a Winged Strawberry, which can only be collected if Madeline does not use her dash to get to them.
    • Her down taunt is a reference to the feather minigame featured in the end of chapter 4, where Madeline, experiencing a panic attack, is calmed down by Theo, who tells her to imagine a golden feather, and make it float by breathing in and out deeply.
    • Her first victory pose is a reference to the ending of Chapter 2, where Madeline calls her mom via a payphone after having a weird dream.
    • Her second victory pose is a reference to scenes within Chapter 7, where Madeline, now working together with Badeline, spins around with her as they rise up the mountain.
    • Similar to Mega Man, Madeline splits into orbs when KO'd, as she does when dying in her home series; it, like Mega Man, is accompanied by the sound effect heard in Celeste. Her entrance animation uses this effect in reverse, as it does when she respawns in a level.
  • Madeline's forward smash is a nod to her guest appearance within the Nintendo Switch version of TowerFall.
  • If Madeline is in her Badeline costume, Badeline (in her Final Smash) will instead use Madeline's default coloring.
  • When Madeline uses Theo, there's a chance a Celeste-styled speech box will appear at the top of the screen, with Theo saying "I'm helping." If the move gets a KO, he may instead say "Theo saves the day again." Both of these lines are lines Theo says during his time in the crystal in Chapter 5.
    • If Kirby uses Theo, the first line will instead say, "Well, aren't you just the cutest little thing."

Final Smash Mewberty
Possible? No
Star is Gonna Get a Little Weird!
—Introduction tagline

Star (スター, Star) is one of Aidan's favorite cartoon characters. Eden Sher, her English voice actress from the show, would reprise her role.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff Star vs. the Forces of Evil, in spite of its limited four season run, was one of Disney Channel's most successful shows.
  • Buff Star takes after her father and prefers combat (for the most part).
  • Nerf Still, nonetheless, she is a cartoon character.

Character description

Star Butterfly was born into the Mewni kingdom. However, due to inheriting her father's sense of adventures, she wasn't as into royalty as her mother wanted her to be. Her mother hesitantly passed on the royal wand when Star turned 14, but she also sent Star to Earth to practice her magic away from home. On Earth, she befriended Marco Diaz, who she also took up residence with. Since then, she's lived with the Diazes, and has taken Marco on all of her adventures. However, due to a powerful villain coming back, her mother came to Earth to take her home, but not before Star revealed to Marco that, during the time she's known him, she developed a crush on him.

Attributes

As Star carries her wand with her, she has an assortment of spells that she takes from her home series. These make appearances in smash attacks, aerials, and, of course, her specials.

Neutral special Narwhal Blast 12% (per narwhal) Summons a horde of five narwhals, flying out in a fan-like pattern. The narwhals, however, do not combo into one another; if the opponent is right next to Star when she uses it, they will only get hit once.
Side special Tiara Tornado 2.7% (per tiara) Spins and fires off a volley of crowns and tiaras. Can move while spinning, and can help with her recovery, much like R.O.B.'s Arm Rotor.
Up special Bunny Rabbit Blast 12% Shoots a powerful blast of energy and bunnies that launches her in a desired direction.
Down special Glowworm Blast 9% (per glowworm) Fires an arcing blast that leaves four glowworms on the ground that explode on contact. Opponents can, however, pick them up and use them against Star.

Taunts

  • Up Taunt: Star turns and makes a rainbow, before the rainbow sets itself on fire. Star then sweats nervously, before the rainbow disappears.
  • Side Taunt: Star uses her wand to change her hairband multiple times, before returning it to normal. In order, they are a flower hairband, a pirate's hat, a fez, a unicorn hairband with a wig and a horn, and a cactus headband.
  • Down Taunt: Gnaws on her wand, before looking up and putting it away.

On-Screen Appearance

Star leaps through a dimensional hole, made by her Dimensional Scissors.

Idle Poses

  • Fixes her headband.
  • Brushes her hair.

Crowd cheer

Star! Star! Star!

Victory Poses

  • Leaps up and poses with her wand, akin to the ending of the show's intro.
  • Tosses her wand in her hand multiple times and says, "Y'know, I kinda like this "Smash" dimension."
  • Lays on a couch, watching TV and eating nachos with Marco.

Victory Fanfare

Classic Mode: Traveling to the Smash Dimension

Star's Classic Mode represents her ability (and tendency) to travel through dimensions, reflected in the fact that no Smash universe is visited twice in her Classic Mode path.

Trophies

Star
Star Butterfly, the princess of Mewni, has found her way to the Smash dimension! Born into the Mewni kingdom, she carries the family's magical wand with her, but is a lot more friendly to combat than her mother would like her to be. (She gets it from her father.) She has tons of spells at her disposal, and she finds ways to integrate as many as she can into her fighting style.
Star vs. the Forces of Evil (2015)
Star (Alt.)
Star has a lot of spells to use, and while they may seem a bit unusual to Earthlings like us, they're completely normal for Mewmans. Her neutral special, Narwhal Blast, has her summon a horde of narwhals that do some heavy damage. Her down special, Glowworm Blast, summons a collection of glowworms that explode in your face if you touch them.
Star vs. the Forces of Evil (2015)
Mewberty
Much like us humans and our puberty, the Mewman girls have a phase called Mewberty. This is when a Mewman gains a set of wings, heightened senses, as well as a special form with six arms. This special form is what Star turns into for her Final Smash, where she pulls out her wand and unleashes a special magical blast that she's only used once before.
Star vs. the Forces of Evil (2015)

Alternate costumes

  • Default - Based on her standard appearance.
  • Edgar - Based on her Edgar dress, named after the bear on her dress.
  • Red - Has on Marco Diaz's hoodie, with her hair in a ponytail.[1]
  • Teal - Based on Jackie Lynn Thomas.
  • Black - Based on Janna Ordonia.
  • Green - Based on Kelly.
  • Purple - Based on Tom Lucitor.
  • Light Blue - Based on her mother, Moon. Aesthetically, the hearts on her cheeks are replaced with diamonds, and Star's wand is replaced with its appearance while in the possession of Moon. Her Mewberty form uniquely changes its coloring to match Moon's own form.

Kirby Hat

Kirby gets Star's hair, headband, and wand, along with the heart marks on her cheeks.

Trivia

  • Star carries references from her series outside of her moveset:
    • Star's splash tagline is a reference to the lyrics of the theme song.
    • Star's up taunt is a reference to a scene in the first episode when she introduces herself to Marco.
    • Star's side taunt is a reference to the intro scene of the episode Freeze Day, where she uses her wand to cycle through different headband options.
    • Her victory pose with Marco references the ending of Party With a Pony, where, after gaining Pony Head's Dimensional Scissors, Star and Marco return home to eat nachos while watching TV.

Cuphead Brews Up a Brawl!
—Introduction tagline

Cuphead (カップヘッド, Cuphead) is an indie character from a game Aidan wanted to play, but was saddened when it was Xbox and Windows exclusive, only to be overjoyed when it was announced for Nintendo Switch (and upset that he missed the announcement of a Mac port half a year earlier). As with his home series, he would remain silent in-game.

Reasons for inclusion/exclusion

  • Buff The run and gun genre has a distinct lack of representation in Smash.
  • Buff A character based on 1930s cartoons would be an absolute delight to have.
  • Nerf Indie characters haven't exactly had the best reputation in Smash, but we're progressing.

Character description

Brothers Cuphead and Mugman found themselves gambling at the Devil's Casino, and the Devil had taken notice of their winnings. He offered them a bargain: if the two won, they would get all the loot in the casino, but if they lost, the Devil would take their souls. Blinded by greed, Cuphead agreed, despite Mugman's objections, and unfortunately lost. The two begged with the Devil to see if there was something else they could do instead of their souls being taken away, and the Devil assigned them with getting the souls of those who had previously escaped him.

Attributes

Cuphead's gameplay is simplistic, with relatively basic attacks and projectiles in his special moves (barring up special). However, like in his games, a set of five cards will slowly show up with use of his special moves, and once a card is shown in full, he is able to use a powered up version of each of his special moves (again, barring up special) by simply pressing the button (as holding it will use the normal version). Landing his up special will grant a full card.

Moveset

Name Damage Description
Neutral attack 2.5%, 4.5% Performs two kicks.
Forward tilt 9% Leans forward and pokes with his straw.
Up tilt 7.7% Headbutts upwards.
Down tilt 6% Kicks in front of him.
Dash attack 8% (clean), 6% (late) Quickly rushes forward. Based on the dash mechanic in Cuphead.
Forward smash 17% Winds up his fist, before performing a gut punch.
Up smash 16% Plugs his nose and blows a stream of bubbles upwards from his straw.
Down smash 12% Performs a split kick.
Neutral aerial 8% (clean), 5% (late) Performs a sex kick.
Forward aerial 13% Performs a downward hammer punch.
Back aerial 12% (foot), 9% (leg) Kicks behind him.
Up aerial 11% Headbutts upwards.
Down aerial 12% Slams his head forwards, while his straw turns to an axe. Reminiscent of the Whetstone in Cuphead.
Grab   Grabs the opponent with both hands.
Pummel 1.3% Knees the opponent.
Forward throw 8% Turns the opponent around and kicks them on the rear.
Back throw 10.3% Spins the opponent around multiple times.
Up throw 4% (throw), 8% (straw) Throws the opponent into the air before poking them with his straw.
Down throw 7% Spins the opponent above him, before slamming them on the ground.
Floor attack (front) 7% Kicks behind himself and then in front of himself while getting up.
Floor attack (back) 7% Punches behind himself and then in front of himself while getting up.
Floor attack (trip) 5% Punches behind himself and then in front of himself while getting up.
Edge attack 9% Performs a sliding kick.
Neutral special Peashooter 1% (per shot), 11.8% (powered up projectile) By holding the button, Cuphead will snap rapidly, firing small blue pellets of energy that do not cause flinching. He is able to move around while shooting, and can even change the angle. If a card fills up, he has the ability to fire a much larger projectile by tapping the button.
Side special Roundabout 3% (per shot), 2.4% (per hit, powered up projectile) By holding the button, Cuphead will snap rapidly (though slower than with Peashooter), firing small teal pellets of energy that act as boomerangs that do not cause flinching. He is able to move around while shooting, and can even change the angle. If a card fills up, by tapping the button, he has the ability to fire a much larger projectile that hits up to 8 times in total, before retreating in the opposite direction. Should all 8 hits land, the projectile will simply disappear.
Up special Parry Slap 8.2% By jumping on a Spectre that appears beneath him (or a nearby opponent, should there be one) and slapping them with his straw, he leaps into the air, and the opponent gets weakly meteor smashed as a result.
Down special Charge 10% (per charged shot), 19% (powered up projectile) By holding the button, Cuphead will charge a swirling projectile that travels forward once released, but will only work if charged all the way. He can move around while charging the attack, though, as with any charge-based projectile, the charge will go away if he gets hit. He cannot store or cancel the charge. If a card fills up, he has the ability to unleash a burst attack around him by tapping the button.
Final Smash Giant Ghost 13% (per hit) Cuphead summons a muscular ghost version of himself, who attacks nearby opponents by spinning around with its fists clenched. Upon usage, the number of cards he has resets to zero.

Taunts

On-Screen Appearance

  • A black square covers him up, before opening up in a circle to reveal Cuphead. Should Cuphead be the first player, the entire screen will open up with a circle.

Idle Poses

Cuphead:

  • Pulls up his pants, before they fall back down.
  • Flexes, while his straw bubbles up.

Mugman:

  • Stretches his body and twists.
  • Takes his straw from his head and takes a few gulps.

Crowd cheer

Cuphead: Cup - head!

Mugman: Mug - man!

Victory Poses

  • Jumps up and down multiple times, before posing. Like his up taunt, Cuphead jumps up and down when completing a level, and the pose is the exact same seen on the results screen in Cuphead. Mugman's pose changes slightly to match his own.
  • Parries three Spectres, before flipping in the air and landing.
  • Swoops down on his airplane, before flying back into the air to fly away.

Victory Fanfare

The Level Clear music from Cuphead.

Alternate costumes

AidanzapunkCupheadPalette.png
  • Default - Based on his standard appearance.
  • Mugman - Replaces him with Mugman.
  • Purple - Based on his appearance in the bad ending.
  • Mugman Purple - Based on Mugman's appearance in the bad ending.
  • Black - A black and white alt, referencing how cartoons from the 1930s (the era Cuphead is based on) lacked color.
  • Mugman Black - A black and white alt for Mugman.
  • Green - The same shade of green is seen on Puphead, a marionette based on the two used by Djimmi the Great.
  • Mugman Green - A subtle reference to Luigi, as Mugman is similarly the player 2 option and brother to Cuphead.

Kirby Hat

Kirby gets Cuphead's straw poking out of his head, as well as a mug handle on his back.

Trivia

  • Cuphead's intro tagline is a reference to one of the starting announcer quotes in Cuphead: "A brawl is surely brewing!"
  • Cuphead's render features yellow gloves and brown shoes, his in-game model in gameplay features white gloves and brown shoes, and his in-game model in victory poses features white gloves and yellow shoes. This is not only true to Cuphead (where the three are distributed amongst his results screen render, his in-game appearance, and his overworld sprite, respectively), but also a reference to animation inconsistencies in the 1930s, where posters for cartoons would feature slightly different colors from the actual cartoon.
  • Cuphead was originally going to have an alt with the same color aesthetics as Bendy and the Ink Machine, but this was scrapped after it was realized that the two could not be mixed for one result.
  • In an attempt to stay accurate to the source material, multiple Fleischer cartoons were turned to to come up with attacks; unfortunately, none of them proved useful in the end.
    • However, Cuphead's forward smash was made as a subtle reference to Popeye.
  • When KO'd in Stamina Mode, a ghost will appear from his body and float upwards, replicating the death animation seen in Cuphead.
    • If, in a team battle, another Cuphead on the same team uses his up special on the ghost, it will say "Thank you!" in response, and Cuphead will be revived with full health, replicating the revival mechanic seen within Cuphead's multiplayer mode.

General trivia

This is just some general trivia in regards to the page as a whole.

  • The characters on this page are listed in the order that I came up with their movesets. Wendy's moveset creation dates back to December of 2015.
    • That said, there are two characters who I had ideas for (or, at least, were characters that I wanted to make movesets for) as far back as 2013: Jinx and Professor Layton. I got into both League of Legends and Professor Layton around this time, and, being the Smash fan I was (and still kinda am), I imagined what it'd be like to have both of them in Smash. When I was thinking up characters to make movesets for, Jinx came a bit more easily to me than Layton, and I was able to get her done long before Layton (finishing her up in March of 2016). I knew I wanted to think up a moveset for Layton, but I was completely dumbfounded as to what his special moves would even be (as the big things I pay attention to when making a moveset are the special moves, or, more specifically, a believable recovery and a legitimate Final Smash), and I almost gave up on him entirely; it wasn't until October of 2016 when I actually decided to start thinking up a legitimate moveset for Layton, and I finished him up in May of 2017.
  • Wendy and Shadow were actually on the SmashWiki before, as they were a part of a dead project known as Super Smash Bros. Dream. This project evolved onto its own wiki, where Yacker was introduced, and then later into something greater that became Super Smash Bros. Universe, which is where the rest of the characters come from.
    • In this project, I made way more movesets than what's on here, but these particular ones were given lots of love by me, and I feel like they were my best movesets.
    • The project was discontinued a few months after I finished Kenshin up, but I still had ideas for characters, which resulted in Danny, Specter Knight, Chun-Li, Madeline, and Star. The project was revived years after, now featuring a basis on Ultimate instead of Smash 4, which resulted in the creation of Cuphead, among other characters not seen here. This reboot also saw an overhaul of the roster, resulting in several movesets across the board getting scrapped. As a result, Yacker and Star are SmashWiki-exclusive characters.
  • All of these characters would definitely be used by me in an actual Smash game if they were put in. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that I want all of them in; if I had to seriously pick characters I would want to see, I'd choose Layton and Shovel Knight (Phoenix Wright and Shadow are close seconds).
  • Each of the series symbols used (that aren't the Sonic or Street Fighter ones) has its own origin:
    • The Fairy Tail symbol is, appropriately, the Fairy Tail guild's insignia, which appears somewhere on the body of a Fairy Tail guild member.
    • The Ace Attorney symbol is the shine of light that appears in the Ace Attorney series logo.
    • The League of Legends symbol is based on the icon for League of Legends.
    • The Shovel Knight symbol is based on his trusty shovel, which is, obviously, his weapon of choice. I actually took this one from Smashified.
    • The Miraculous Ladybug symbol is based on the yo-yo that belongs to Ladybug.
    • The Skullgirls symbol is based on the heart with a skull inside that appears in the Skullgirls logo.
    • The Viewtiful Joe symbol is based on the "V" seen in both the Viewtiful Joe logo and the in-game "V" collectables.
    • The Professor Layton symbol is based on the icon seen in both the loading screens for the game and in the Professor Layton series logo.
    • The Rurouni Kenshin symbol is based on Kenshin's famous battle scar.
    • The Ninja Sex Party symbol is based on the star symbol on Danny's current outfit.
    • The Celeste symbol is based on the collectible strawberries that Madeline can obtain throughout the game.
    • The Star vs. the Forces of Evil symbol is based on the star on Star's variation of the Royal Magic Wand, in its Season 1 appearance.
    • The Cuphead symbol is based on Cuphead's head, albeit without his facial features.
  • Characters up to Kenshin were created around Smash 4, and thus do not take changes seen in Ultimate in mind. This is why each character has trophy descriptions, and Wendy, Yacker, and Shovel Knight have custom special moves. That said, those same characters can still work in the Ultimate environment; I just kept the trophy descriptions because I like trophies that much. Characters after Kenshin follow a similar pattern, where they're based on Ultimate, but still have trophies.
    • That said, in the aforementioned reboot, customs and trophies were scrapped, following in line with Ultimate doing the same, and as a result, all customs and trophies remain SmashWiki-exclusive as well.
      • Shadow previously had customs, but I took them out after deciding that I didn't really like them, as all of them were "one is slower and more powerful and one is faster and weaker".
    • Cat Noir's Final Smash was originally based on the robot seen in the episode "Gamer", which would've been a big robot that used Ryu's moves (because there's a fight scene in the episode with the robot that pays homage to Street Fighter), but then Ultimate had its "no transformation Final Smashes" thing, so I thought I'd update it. The thing it's now based on is actually an unused concept from the show.

Other cool stuff

Palutena's Guidance

I enjoy the Palutena's Guidances, so I figured I'd write some for the characters I made. (Can you tell I like guest appearances?)

Wendy

Pit: Why am I fighting a little girl...?
Warren: Oh, you must be Pit. I've heard about you.
Pit: Huh? Who are you?! And how are you able to contact me?!
Warren: I'm Warren, from Fairy Tail. My magic allows me to contact others using telepathy.
Pit: Oh, like Lady Palutena, right?
Warren: I...guess? That aside, that’s Wendy, the Sky Dragon Slayer. She may be young and cute, but she’s very powerful.
Pit: Huh? That little girl...slays dragons?!
Warren: Dragon Slayer Magic is magic taught to humans by actual dragons. In Wendy's case, her dragon was Grandeeney, the Sky Dragon.
Pit: That is so COOOOL!
Warren: However, the magic actually isn’t powerful enough to slay a dragon... But regardless, Wendy should not be underestimated. Her Sky Dragon Crushing Fang and Sky Dragon Talon are very powerful techniques on their own, but her Final Smash is her most devastating attack: her Sky Dragon Roar.
Pit: I’ll be sure to avoid that one...

NOTES:

  • Warren's comment about Dragon Slayer Magic not being powerful enough to slay a dragon references how, in the Grand Magic Games arc of Fairy Tail, seven dragons were summoned in a portal from Eclipse, and the seven Dragon Slayers of the series came out to fight them; however, none of them were able to slay a dragon.
  • Pit's surprise is similar to the initial reaction everyone gave when first seeing Wendy in the Oración Seis arc. Pit's statement after Warren explains Dragon Slayer Magic is also similar to the reaction the Fairy Tail guild gave when Wendy revealed her magic. Finally, Pit's statement itself is a reference to Jason, an eccentric reporter in Fairy Tail who often exclaims that things are "COOOOL!".
  • This is the only Guidance where neither Palutena nor Viridi appear. Warren himself is, as he says, a user of telepathy magic, which allows him to communicate with others, explaining why/how he appears in the Guidance.

Shadow

Pit: Is that a...black Sonic?
Palutena: That's Shadow. He uses a combination of guns, motorcycles, and Chaos attacks.
Viridi: Guns? I’ve heard of people using guns, but never hedgehogs...
Pit: So I can just reflect the shots back at him, right? This'll be easy!
Palutena: Not so fast, Pit. Shadow can use Chaos Control to warp to any place at any time. He could just as easily warp right next to you to punish you.
Viridi: But, then again, he couldn't.
Pit: Got it...

NOTES:

  • Pit's first line is a reference to Sonic Adventure 2, where Sonic is mistaken for Shadow because of their similar appearances.
  • Palutena's information is technically incorrect; while Shadow can use Chaos Control to warp to any place at any time in the Sonic games, he cannot do so in Smash. Viridi then somewhat corrects Palutena by saying that he could be unable to.

Yacker

Pit: Hey, he's kinda cute!
Palutena: That's Yacker. He's a Wisp from outer space.
Pit: Lisp?
Viridi: No, Wisp. With a "W".
Pit: Yea...I'll just stick with "alien".
Palutena: There are many different types of Wisps. Each has its own special ability. And many of them appear in Yacker's moveset.
Viridi: The Red Burst can unleash a giant flame attack, but Yacker can also damage you while he's charging it.
Pit: Don't you think that's a bit...overpowered?
Palutena: Oh, come on, Pit, you've taken down multiple "overpowered" bosses before. Like the Great Reaper.
Viridi: Yea, and plus, you're just fighting Yacker, it's not like you're fighting a giant Ferris wheel.

NOTES:

  • Pit's questioning of Yacker's species name is a reference to the same conversation between Sonic and Tails in Sonic Colors.
    • Ironically, Sonic broke the fourth wall in Sonic Colors, but Pit does not.
  • Palutena's last line is an obvious reference to the Great Reaper, the boss of Chapter 4 in Kid Icarus Uprising.
  • Viridi's last line, on the other hand, is in reference to the boss of Tropical Resort in the Wii version of Sonic Colors, Rotatatron.

Phoenix Wright

Pit: Wow, he's got a pretty fancy suit on.
Professor Layton: It's only natural for a defence attorney to be dressed in that attire.
Palutena: Well, hello, Professor! What brings you here?
Pit: Wait, you know him?!
Palutena: Well, for one, I am an all-knowing goddess. For two, who doesn't know the famous Professor Layton?
Professor Layton: A pleasure to make your acquaintance. My name is Professor Hershel Layton, and I happen to have made Mr Wright's acquaintance before.
Pit: Oh, really? Then maybe you can tell us a bit more about him.
Professor Layton: I would be honoured to. Mr Wright's goal, as a defence attorney, is to prove that his client is not guilty, and that the opposing person is. With that said, in battle, he mostly provides evidence and objections to prove his opponent's guilt. Be prepared for random papers and other miscellaneous objects flying around in the battlefield.
Palutena: Wow, thanks, Professor! You've been a big help.
Professor Layton: My pleasure.

NOTES:

  • Professor Layton's comment about him having met Phoenix before (and him appearing in general) is a nod to the 2012 crossover Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.
  • Professor Layton also uses the British spelling of certain words in his speech, referencing how he is from London.
    • As such, in the European English version of the game, any use of the word "attorney" is replaced with the word "barrister".

Jinx

Vi: *huff* *huff*
Pit: Uh...ma'am? Do you need help?
Vi: No, but thank you. I'm here to arrest that criminal.
Pit: ...you mean my opponent?
Vi: Yes, your...opponent. The opponent you're facing goes by the name Jinx. She's the most wanted criminal in all of Piltover, and I know her more than anyone.
Palutena: Well...except a goddess.
Vi: Gah! ...you made me jump.
Palutena: But she's right, Pit. That lady is Jinx, and she has a serious love for killing things.
Vi: She carries two guns, which she calls..."Pow-Pow" and "Fishbones". One is a minigun, and one is a rocket launcher, and she can switch between them any time she pleases.
Palutena: She also carries an electric gun and explosives. Watch out for her.

Shovel Knight

Pit: It's not every day you get to see someone using something as simplistic as a shovel as a weapon.
Palutena: Well, that should come as no surprise. He is called Shovel Knight, after all. And he's a powerful warrior, who bravely fought through the Order of No Quarter to reach the dreaded Tower of Fate in order to save his beloved Shield Knight.
Pit: A powerful warrior, huh? What other gardening tools does he have?
Palutena: Well, if you consider relics from the Order of No Quarter "gardening tools", he has a whole collection.
Pit: Like what?
Palutena: His Flare Wand can send a ball of fire forward, and his Phase Locket can make him invisible for a brief moment. He's a tricky fighter.

Ladybug

Normal

Pit: Is that a...girl in a ladybug costume?
Alya: You bet it is! That's Ladybug, one of Paris's superheroes!
Pit: That sounds like a tiresome day job. ...And who might you be?
Alya: I'm Alya, the runner of the Ladyblog! I'm always up to date on your friendly neighborhood ladybug!
Pit: Uh-huh...
Palutena: Oh, don't be such a downer, Pit. If I was a superhero, you'd want to have a blog about me, wouldn't you?
Pit: Well, of course! But enough about fans, let's get back to my match.
Palutena: Of course, Pit. Ladybug is an extremely athletic fighter, who moves with her yo-yo.
Alya: She is able to spin it rapidly to reflect enemy fire, as well as use it to trap the opponents by their feet. Watch out for her, she's used to fighting.
Pit: Oh yea? How many Underworld enemies has she faced?!

NOTES:

  • Alya's introduction references the Spider-Man series, where Spider-Man is often referred to as "your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man".
  • Pit's comment about Ladybug's job as one of Paris's superheroes being "a tiresome day job" is a subtle nod to the episode "Simon Says", where Marinette is grounded for missing school a lot because of her having to save Paris a lot of the time.

Marinette alt

Pit: Hey, Viridi, what's that thing following my opponent?
Viridi: I...actually have no idea. It's got some weird energy...
Tikki: Hi there! I'm Tikki, and I'm a magical Kwami!
Pit: It can talk?!
Viridi: Amazing! I've never seen anything like it before!
Tikki: Right now, Marinette isn't transformed into Ladybug, but she's still a good fighter! Her yo-yo gives her the power to summon an item that can give her an advantage!
Pit: So all I have to do is hope that she doesn't get a good item, right?
Tikki: ...Well, that's one way to think about it...

Cat Noir

Normal

Pit: A black cat?!
Nino: That's not just any black cat, dude! That's Cat Noir!
Pit: Isn't he the one that's always following Ladybug?
Palutena: It's been said that Cat Noir has strong feelings towards Ladybug, but she doesn't have those same feelings...
Nino: Cat Noir isn't a sidekick, though. He likes to have some fun fighting enemies too. He even had to fight me once!
Pit: Really?
Nino: Yea! I don't really remember what I had, but I do remember that Cat Noir used his staff a lot. He's got some mad skills with that thing!
Pit: Alright, thanks for the tips!
Nino: Don't mention it, bro!

NOTES:

  • Nino mentioning how he had to fight Cat Noir is specifically referring to the episode "The Bubbler", where Nino was akumatized into The Bubbler.

Adrien alt

Plagg: Well, time to sit back and let Adrien do the fighting! Anyone got any Camembert?
Pit: ...Who and what are you?
Plagg: Name's Plagg. I'm a Kwami that lets Adrien turn into Cat Noir. Seriously, I'm starving. Any Camembert close by?
Palutena: Tell you what, if Adrien wins, I'll give you access to the Gods and Goddesses Market. All the Camembert you could ever want.
Pit: Wait, what makes you think I'll lose?!
Plagg: Well, for one, Adrien still has his Cataclysm ability, which can break virtually anything.
Pit: Well, I can fly, so hah! Beat that!
Palutena: Well...you can only fly with my help...

Valentine

Marie: ...an angel? Are you affiliated with the Trinity?
Pit: The...Trinity? Lady Palutena, do you know what they're talking about?
Palutena: The Trinity...is a group of very bad people.
Double: You have no right to offend the masters, peasant.
Palutena: Excuse you, I am the goddess of light!
Marie: ...you are of no concern to us. Valentine works for us; you do not stand a chance.
Palutena: Pit, no matter what, you have to win this! These people are very dangerous!
Double: Two servants of goddesses against each other...the Trinity will be pleased with this victory.

NOTES:

  • The continuous mention of the Trinity refers to the trio of goddesses who are worshiped in the Skullgirls universe. Double works for the Trinity and helps them continue their plan to destroy the world through the Skull Heart, explaining her calling the Trinity "the masters".
  • Palutena having knowledge of the Trinity makes sense, as the Trinity and Palutena are all goddesses. However, Double seems to be unaware of Palutena's existence altogether, as she refers to her as a "peasant", before Palutena angrily corrects her by exclaiming that she is the goddess of light.
  • Marie mentioning how Valentine works for her is a reference to the beginning of Valentine's story mode, where Marie effortlessly wiped out the Last Hope, barring Valentine, leaving her no other option but to join forces. Double also refers to the battle as "two servants of goddesses against each other", referring to Pit's role as Palutena's servant and Valentine being forced to work under Double and Marie (and, consequently, the Trinity).
  • Marie and Double both reuse portraits from Skullgirls during the Guidance.

Viewtiful Joe

Pit: Isn't that...Viewtiful Joe?
Palutena: Good eye, Pit! He's saved Movieland from the evil supervillains more times than I can count!
Viridi: Actually, he's only done it four times...
Palutena: Joe is an action movie hero, so he's able to use some pretty cool special effects. His Voomerang can be charged up to give it a flame effect!
Pit: Wow...I wonder what my superhero identity would be...Zauriel, perhaps?
Palutena: I think you'd need a V-Watch for that kind of transformation.
Pit: Henshin-a-go-go, baby!

NOTES:

  • Viridi comments on how Joe has saved Movieland four times, referencing Viewtiful Joe, Viewtiful Joe 2, Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble, and Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble.
  • Pit suggests Zauriel as his superhero identity, a character from DC Comics's Justice League.

Professor Layton

Pit: That looks to be a pretty fancy top hat.
Phoenix Wright: Yea, that's the professor for you. He always carries that thing around with him, it's practically a part of his body.
Viridi: Wait a minute...aren't you a lawyer? What on earth are you doing in a fighting game?!
Phoenix Wright: Yes, I'm a lawyer. Phoenix Wright, at your service. ...And I have no idea what I'm doing here either.
Maya: Oh come on, Nick, you've proven yourself to be a very capable fighter! Twice, actually!
Phoenix Wright: Those were all your doing! You told me to get outside of the courtroom more often!
Pit: Uh, guys...I hate to break up your little argument, but I could use some Smash Bros. assistance right about now!
Phoenix Wright: Right, sorry. Professor Layton is the king of puzzles, so when you're fighting him, it might seem like one giant puzzle.
Maya: He can pull out parrots, toy cars, a rabbit, a paintbrush, all sorts of cool little things.
Viridi: You seem to be pretty good at this helping out thing. Would you like to trade jobs for the day?
Maya: Have fun being a spirit medium!

NOTES:

  • Viridi's questioning of Phoenix Wright's placement in a fighting game is a callback to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, where one of Tron Bonne's lines asks the same thing.
  • Maya noting how Phoenix has proven himself to be a capable fighter twice references his appearances in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Project X Zone 2.

Kenshin

Kaoru: So, this is where you ran off to!
Pit: Huh?!
Palutena: What seems to be the problem?
Kaoru: The problem is Kenshin here keeps wandering off without telling me!
Pit: I thought that was his whole thing, though. You know, the whole "wandering samurai" story...
Kaoru: Oh, so you're fighting Kenshin, huh, Seiya?!
Pit: ...Who's Seiya? My name's Pit. ...And this guy is really beating up on me.
Kaoru: Oh, I'm so sorry! You totally look like someone else. As for the beating up, Kenshin's a master swordsman. His style, the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū, is an unrivaled style.
Palutena: That's right. His Kuzuryūsen hits you a total of nine times, each in a specific weak point. His swordstyle earned him the nickname "Hitokiri Battōsai". Stay on your toes, Pit.

NOTES:

  • Kaoru confuses Pit for Seiya, the main protagonist of Saint Seiya, another Shōnen Jump franchise.
  • In the Japanese version, Pit's first line is an imitation of Kenshin's iconic "おろ?!".

Danny Sexbang

Pit: Lady Palutena...I feel uncomfortable.
Palutena: You think you feel uncomfortable? I'm just patiently waiting for him to inevitably come for me.
Pit: Why's that, Lady Palutena?
Palutena: Danny is a man with only women on the mind. He wants to...do things with them, things that some would say gives them pleasure.
Pit: ...Does it give you pleasure?
Palutena: I...would rather not answer that question. Ask me again when you're older. In any case, watch out for Danny: he may be inexperienced in fights, but he throws pizza and can create lasers just by rubbing his legs together. And watch out for Ninja Brian, he moves so fast that even I can't catch up with him.

Specter Knight

Pit: An undead warrior? Do you think he works for the Underworld Army?
Hades: Oh no, he's not one of mine. Although I must say, that Enchantress must have some pretty powerful stuff under her belt to keep him alive like this...
Palutena: Call upon the army, and their leader shall appear...
Hades: How lovely for you to join us, Pretty Palutena! I was just admiring this old fighter here.
Pit: You know him?
Hades: I can't say that I know him personally, but I do know a little about who he is. His name is Donovan, and he's a warrior who used to go on adventures with a friend of his named Luan.
Palutena: After going into the Tower of Fate, he ran into the Enchantress, who wanted to rule the land with eight powerful knights at her helm. She turned Donovan into an undead warrior, giving him the new name of Specter Knight.
Pit: That's...actually pretty sad. Sounds like he didn't really have a choice.
Palutena: It really is sad. The Enchantress originally wanted Luan's son, Reize, to be her eighth knight, but Donovan gave himself up to her in order to save Reize's life.
Hades: And now he's doomed to serve the Enchantress until the end of time, staying in the Lich Yard until anyone brave enough to fight him comes by. Like a knight with a shovel, perhaps.
Palutena: Specter Knight uses a scythe as his main weapon, but he can also summon skeletal troops or make a mirage duplicate of himself to increase his range. He's a skilled warrior with much experience, so be careful.

Chun-Li

Pit: Those are some pretty muscular legs she's got there.
Palutena: It only makes sense - Chun-Li started learning Chinese martial arts from her father at a very young age, so she has years of experience kept up in those "lightning legs" of hers.
Pit: I feel like I could get crushed by those if she had me in a chokehold with them...
Viridi: Luckily, her fighting style doesn't use those. She instead focuses on powerful, rapid kicks, like her Hyakuretsukyaku technique. She can also use qi - what the Chinese believe to be a type of energy flow - to hit you from afar.
Palutena: She also has three different Final Smashes, each being powerful in their own right - the Kikosho, a multihitting sphere of qi energy, the Hoyokusen, a powerful set of kicks, and the Shichisei Senku Kyaku, a powerful kick that she can only use in the air.
Pit: Will I be okay?!
Palutena: Don't worry, Pit. She's a cop, but she's only dangerous to criminals.

Madeline

Pit: ...Huh.
Palutena: What is it, Pit?
Pit: Think about it, Lady Palutena. I have the opportunity to fight a bunch of really weird opponents - superheroes, robots, animals, even people with supernatural powers. But fighting someone a bit more on the normal side is a nice change of pace.
Theo: What, and fighting an angel is supposed to be "normal" for her?
Pit: Woah!
Palutena: And hello to you too, Theo.
Pit: ...Who's he again?
Theo: Theo. Pleasure to meet you. I'm a friend Madeline made on her trip up Celeste Mountain, and believe me, calling her "normal" is far from the truth.
Pit: And why's that?
Theo: Madeline fought against her inner thoughts - the constant ringing of denial, the "you can't do this" kind of stuff - manifested into an evil version of herself, all while climbing an entire summit. And she did this all on her own. ...Well, and a little help from me.
Pit: An evil version of herself... I know a thing or two about that.
Theo: Madeline is an extraordinary young woman, and for her to be here alongside the likes of an angel and a goddess would definitely put her above normal.
Palutena: In that same sense, Pit, Madeline has a few tricks up her sleeve that you should watch out for. Like Theo said, she was able to climb an entire summit, so she's a bit better at recovering than most fighters here. She has a dash that she can use twice, as well as using clouds and feathers to her advantage.
Pit: If she's so good at climbing, maybe we should have her go through the Lightning Chariot Base...

NOTES:

  • Theo is unique amongst Palutena's Guidance guests in that he not only has no specified voice actor (instead using the same muffled sound effects from Celeste), but also uses the animated speech portrait he has in Celeste, though only for his lines.
  • Pit compares Badeline to Dark Pit, as the two, though created by different means (and have different motives/personalities), are evil, antagonistic versions of Madeline and Pit.
  • Pit's last line has him drop a mention of the Lightning Chariot Base, a notoriously lengthy location from Kid Icarus Uprising that he had to climb all the way, in order to face the Chariot Master at the top.

Star

Pit: This girl...isn't a normal human, is she?
Palutena: That's Princess Star Butterfly, from the Mewni dimension. She's not a human, she's a Mewman.
Viridi: "Mewmans"? I hope they aren't as bad as humans.
Palutena: Mewmans don't fight among each other as much as regular humans do, but they do fight among monsters. Star here fights for equality among Mewmans and monsters, as she believes the monsters have been mistreated for far too long.
Pit: But...aren't monsters evil?
Palutena: Not all of them. It's true that there are evil monsters - like the ones from the Underworld - but the monsters in Mewni all want to live peaceful lives. The Mewmans, however, had different thoughts, and wanted to force them out of Mewni altogether.
Viridi: Yep, Mewmans are as bad as humans. But Star seems pretty alright, if she's fighting for equality.
Palutena: Being from the royal family, Star has the Royal Magic Wand, and a large assortment of spells, some of which she made up on the spot herself. She also inherited her father's sense of fighting and adventure, so she's much more of a fighter than someone like Zelda, but still as talented a magic user as her. Stay on your toes, and hope things don't get a little weird.
Viridi: Or a little wild.

NOTES:

  • Palutena's and Viridi's last lines reference the words from the show's theme song.

Cuphead

Pit: This guy looks like he's right out of an old cartoon.
Palutena: That's Cuphead. He and his brother Mugman found themselves in a fair share of trouble when they gambled in the Devil's casino, and ended up losing their souls!
Pit: Well, it's like the old saying goes: don't mess with the Devil. But I didn't even know cups HAD souls!
Viridi: You do know he's not just a cup, right?
Palutena: The boys pleaded with the Devil, asking if there was another way to repay him, so he sent them out to gain the souls of his other debtors instead. When Elder Kettle heard this news, he quickly gave them a potion that gave them special abilities!
Viridi: By snapping his fingers, he can shoot a multitude of projectiles at you. They may not seem like much at first, but him landing the attacks only helps him out. If he gets to a certain point, he'll be able to unleash a more powerful version, which can really knock you far if you're not being careful!

NOTES:

  • When using the Mugman alt, Palutena's first line will swap their names around, and other instances of "cup" are replaced with "mug".
  • The old saying Pit refers to also doubles as the subtitle for Cuphead.

Boxing Ring titles

This is just something I thought would be cool to have, since I like all the Boxing Ring nicknames. That said, I'm only having English ones on here, because it'd be stupid and take up too much space to have other languages (especially ones that I don't speak).

Character Title Why?
Wendy Sky Dragon Slayer In the world of Fairy Tail, everyone can use magic, whether or not they have a lot of it. Wendy uses a special, old type of magic known as Dragon Slayer Magic, and she specifically uses the wind-based Sky Dragon Slayer magic.
Shadow The Ultimate Lifeform As Shadow was created to be the carrier of this disease that Maria had, he kinda was created to be the ultimate lifeform.
Yacker Talks-a-Lot In Sonic Colors, there's a cutscene where Tails makes a translator so he can understand Yacker (as he's an alien). In the DS version, this works out fine, but in the Wii version, the translator borks, and mistranslates what Yacker says, giving him the messed up name of "Talks-a-Lot".
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Not only is it the name of the series, but Phoenix does occasionally introduce himself to clients/partners as such.
Jinx The Loose Cannon Each champion in League of Legends has their own little nickname; it only seems fitting that Jinx's Boxing Ring title be her own nickname from League.
Shovel Knight Sharpen thy Shovel This is one of many different opening lines shown upon starting a level in Shovel Knight.
Ladybug The Normal Girl with a Secret This is a reference to the dialogue heard in the opening theme: "In the daytime, I'm Marinette. Just a normal girl, with a normal life. But there's something about me that no one knows yet, because I have a secret."
Cat Noir The Fashion Model with a Secret Similar to Ladybug's, but slightly different, because Adrien, in his normal life, is a fashion model who promotes his father's brand.
Valentine Bloody Valentine A neat little nod to the movie posters that each character in Skullgirls has.
Viewtiful Joe Hero of Movieland "Movieland" is the name given to the world of Viewtiful Joe, and, seeing as how he's the protagonist, he is the savior of the land.
Professor Layton Leaves No Puzzle Unsolved One of the professor's famous quotes is "A true gentleman leaves no puzzle unsolved."
Kenshin Himura Hitokiri Battōsai Kenshin fought in the war that emerged during the Edo period, and earned this name due to his unmatched swordskills. In Japanese, the name 人斬り抜刀斎 translates to "sword-drawing manslayer".
Danny Sexbang Ninja Sex for Women Because apparently, that's what NSFW stands for.
Specter Knight Specter of Torment Each story in Shovel Knight is given a subtitle; in Specter Knight's case, it is "Specter of Torment".
Chun-Li China's Lightning Legs Chun-Li is from China, and she's very well known for those legs of hers.
Madeline Conquerer of Celeste Mountain Celeste Mountain is the name of the mountain that Madeline climbs throughout Celeste, based off of the real-world (and unofficially named) Mount Celeste in Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
Star Rebel Princess of Mewni A reference to the lyrics of The Ballad of Star Butterfly, as the song describes her as a "rebel princess", which is fitting, as she prefers combat and adventure over the traditional royalty duties (a fact shown in the song itself, as she and Ruberiot veered away from the traditional princess song, preferring a unique twist to call it their own).
Cuphead The Old-Timey Newcomer A reference to the fact that Cuphead came out in 2017, despite being based on cartoons from the 1930s.
