Super Smash Con 2019 was the 5th edition of Super Smash Con, a video game convention and national tournament focused on the Super Smash Bros. series. It was held in Chantilly, Virginia, from August 8th-11th, 2019.

Smash 64 combo contest

Each contestant gets 3 minutes to perform a combo. They can use any character, any stage, and any item. Once the three minutes are up, or when the contestant finishes his or her combo, five judges rate the combo, giving it a number between 1-10. Those points are totalled up into a final number. The higher the score, the better chance in moving on.

In the first round, the top four contestants move on. In the second round, the top two contestants move on. In the final round, both contestants have to do two combos. Although total points are recorded, whoever moves on is chosen solely through said round's points.

Smash Masters exhibitions

Rules: All five Smash games are played in a single elimination best-of-three format (4 stocks for Smash 64 and Melee, 3 for Brawl and Ultimate, and 2 for Smash 4). A "big victory" is earned by winning a game with a high enough amount of stocks left (3 for Smash 64 and Melee, and 2 for Brawl, Smash 4, and Ultimate).

The winner is determined by:

• Sets won
• Games won
• "Big victories" in the event of a tiebreaker.

*As a result of his suicide in June of 2019, a tribute was held in honor of him during the announcement of the award.

Trivia

• This is the first major Melee tournament to implement a ledge grab limit, with a limit of 60 ledge grabs.
• This is the first year where Prince did not win the Smash 64 combo contest, breaking his three-year streak.
• This is the second year in a row where Larry Lurr placed second in the Smash Masters exhibition event.
• The Top 3 players in Ultimate singles (MkLeo, Samsora, and Tweek) had the exact same placings as they did in Smash 4 at Super Smash Con 2018 the year prior.
• This tournament became the only major in 2019 to feature Smash 4 as a main event, and the first tournament to do so since Ultimate's release.
• This tournament marks the highest ever placing of a Mii Brawler main at a Smash 4 major, with Sells placing 5th on the Wii U singles event.
• This is the first Brawl tournament which Nairo entered and failed to win since Super Smash Con 2016.
• This currently ties as SuPeRbOoMfAn's worst placing at a Smash 64 tournament, with him finishing at 5th.
  • It also ended his 18 tournament winning streak.
• This is the first tournament since Shine 2017 where Plup went solo Samus in a Melee tournament. He had previously challenged Axe to complete one of his Super Mario Maker 2 levels, with the promise of going Samus at Super Smash Con 2019 in singles if Axe completed it, which he did after 20+ hours.
  • Interestingly enough, Axe and Plup met in loser's side of bracket, where Axe eliminated Plup 3-0. Some have jokingly suggested that this was Axe's "master plan" the entire time, though their meeting was the result of uncharacteristic underpeformance by both.
• This is the first tournament where Leffen and Salem finally met in bracket following their Twitter "drama", with Leffen taking the set 2-1.
• Despite making it out of Round 1 of Ultimate singles pools on the winners side, Cosmos would end up dropping out of the tournament before Round 2 due to health issues.
• Due to confirmed accusations of bracket manipulation, CaptainZack was banned from competing in the tournament but was allowed to attend as a spectator.
• This tournament marks the lowest placement for several players in Ultimate singles:
  • Dabuz with a placement of 49th.
  • Raito with a placement of 65th, tied with his lowest placement in Wii U singles, gotten at last year's Smash Con.
  • Mr.R with a placement of 97th.
  • Goblin with a placement of 129th.
• ProtoBanham dropped out of the tournament to treat his kidney stones.
