Smash Summit 13 was a Super Smash Bros. Melee invitational tournament. It was the thirteenth installment of the Smash Summit series for Melee, and was held on May 12th-15th, 2022 at Beyond the Summit's studio in Los Angeles, California, which is closed to the general public.

iBDW took first place at the event, winning back-to-back Summits by defeating n0ne and Jmook 3-1 to make it to winners' finals where he would find himself against Hungrybox before taking the set once again 3-1. In grand finals, iBDW and Plup faced off in the Fox Ditto match where Plup would quickly go up 2-0 before being reversed 3-0'd by iBDW, earning him his second Smash Summit title. Plup also had an impressive showing at the event; although being absent from Smash Summit 12, he would find himself on the winners side of the final bracket despite not playing any sets on Saturday as a precaution of COVID-19. In winners' quarters, Plup would take his set over Zain 3-2 before falling to losers by Hungrybox. In losers, Plup defeated lloD and Jmook 3-1 to once again face Hungrybox in losers' finals. In the runback, Plup took the set 3-2 to make it into grand finals before being defeated by iBDW, placing 2nd. After showing dominance by placing first at GENESIS 8 and Pound 2022, Zain would unexpectedly place 5th at the event after falling to losers by Plup in winners' quarters to make a lengthy losers run before losing 3-1 to Jmook in losers' quarters. Mango and Leffen both placed outside of top 8 in a very uncharacteristic fashion, with Mango losing to Hungrybox and KoDoRiN and Leffen losing to Jmook and lloD, resulting in a 9th place finish for both players.

SurvivorEdit

16 players were split into 2 teams of 8 players each. Each team would compete in a challenge (like Crew Battles), with the winning team gaining immunity from voting. The losing team would vote amongst themselves in the Smashers Council, and the player with the most votes would be eliminated. If a player found an immunity idol and presented it at a Smashers Council, their votes would be nullified. After 8 players were eliminated, the final 8 had their teams merged. Players would compete for individual immunity from then on, and all players would vote off one of the losing players.

Survivor was cancelled at the final 4 due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and the $3,000 prize was split between the 4 remaining players.

TriviaEdit

  • The vote-in process for Smash Summit 13 achieved a number of firsts:
    • Due to exactly 20 people opting in during the nomination phase, salami was able to advance all the way to the first round of vote-ins (before being eliminated) despite having 0 nominations.
    • DarkGenex's total vote count of approximately 100,700 votes marks the only time a player that was voted in had a vote count that eclipsed the rest of the players in the running combined (approximately 71,800 votes).
    • For the first round of vote-ins, there was a vote difference of over 84,600 votes between DarkGenex and Sora, the largest gap between two players voted in during the first round of a Smash Summit.
    • Sora became the first vote-in for two consecutive Smash Summits since aMSa at Smash Summits 5 and 6, as well as the only player to get voted in during the first round for two Summits in a row since the multi-period voting system was introduced for Smash Summit 3.
  • This is the first Melee Smash Summit with no Pikachu mains, and the first where everyone mains a top or high tier character.
    • However, Axe was still present as a VIP, ensuring the continued presence of a Pikachu player in the venue for every Melee Summit.
  • During the event, there was a positive COVID-19 case (FendrickLamar) that subsequently spread, resulting in the event being delayed on its third day.[5][6]
    • DarkGenex tested positive for COVID, unfortunately becoming the first player to have to DQ during a Summit event due to the virus.
    • Sora tested negative, but felt unwell and dropped out due to his roommate Bundun testing positive.
    • Plup felt unwell and took the day off, electing to play the Gauntlet 2nd place tiebreakers on Day 4.
    • Blue tested positive and dropped out on Day 4.
    • The 3 dropouts resulted in a final bracket of 13 players, making Smash Summit 13 the first Smash Summit of any game to have under 16 players in the final bracket.
    • A Red Bull Gauntlet ft. Plup event was planned for Day 3, postponed to Day 4 after the outbreak, and was eventually cancelled.
    • The Smasher's Council was cancelled at the final 4, and the $3,000 prize was split between the 4 remaining players.
    • The event was restricted to necessary personnel only on the last two days, so VIP attendees were refunded $500, 50% of the buy-in cost. This also stopped the VIP bracket at the top 8.
  • With his second consecutive victory, iBDW became the second person to win back-to-back Melee Summit events (following Armada, who had previously won the first four events all in a row).
    • He also became the second person to win two consecutive Summits without dropping a set (Armada won Summits 3 and 4 without dropping a set).
  • This tournament marks the first time Mango has placed outside of Top 8 for three majors in a row throughout his entire career.
  • lloD's 3-0 victory over Leffen in Losers Round 2 of the final bracket marks the first time Leffen has lost a set with his Fox to a solo Peach since Armada's 3-0 in Grand Finals of Beauty 9 in December 2014, a full 7 years earlier. Armada would start using Fox against Leffen soon afterwards.
  • This is the first Melee Summit where Grand Finals was a Fox ditto.
