Many of these need to be linked, and several things need to be added (HRC etc) -Umexi

Authorship concernsEdit

From the article:

Credits: This is mostly taken form the CoSK which was done by mastersword118 (And many more)

Why is that? If we ever plan on making this wiki available under a free license (like Creative Commons) we need to make sure that we only have content that people have added themselves. In case we do have permission to use it, then someone should say so, but if we don't, I'm going to tag it as a copyright issue and mark it for deletion. (By the way, we shouldn't really have a "credits" section in an article. It looks tacky, and the whole point of a wiki is to create a collaborative project.) --Kirby King 17:20, August 12, 2006 (GMT)

Well the compendium is a similarly collaborative effort, and since I'm pretty much in charge of it now (at least the one at GameFAQs), I guess I can "give permission" to use the information there. Somebody in the MBM can dig the glossary out and add the new corrections to this article (which, I agree, is tacky and unprofessional). In any case, though, we should be careful about copying information instead of writing our own. MaskedMarth 19:13, September 13, 2006 (GMT)
I'd disagree with the addition of a few of these terms. Take "Turret Fighting" for example. I remember the thread that this popped up in like 2-3 years ago, it was only said in that one thread and it was essentially two people redefining an already defined terms (the term/s would be projectile camping/spamming). Some caution should be givin to just adding local slang terms that few people actually use.Alphazealot 03:50, September 27, 2006 (GMT)

OverhaulEdit

I replaced the terminology with the ones from the most recently edited COSK glossary. Here are some notable changes in this list from the old one:

  • Terms that are rarely or never used ("turret fighting," "roy zone") have been deleted.
  • Parallel parts of speech. Every verb is referenced by its infinitive ("wavedash," not "wavedashing")
  • Multiple definitions of a single term ("bomb jump," "jump-cancel") are listed separately.
  • I've squelched a lot of the informality from the glossary. There are still instances of you, but every definition is written in a less conversational tone.
  • Definitions are definitions. The Terminology Compendium isn't the place to write a guide; thus, stuff like xif's DI guide I have taken out of the glossary. Also, I've changed a lot of the wording to put the thrust on what the term is, instead of describing how to do it or its significance in competitive play.
  • I've also made a few changes from the updated glossary itself. For instance, I "redirect" DA dash to pivot because I feel that in the past few months, pivot has become the dominant term. I took out (my) non-NPOV comments on the terms priority and mind game (I'm considering taking out the ambiguity clause in that term too). I changed knockback to one word, and took out the hyphen in wavedash (wave-dash).

And some other, general comments.

  • I've tried to make the spelling of the terms in the glossary ("chain-throw" instead of "chain throw" or "chain grab") definitive; however, that puts it at odds with the names of a lot of SmashWiki articles (chain grab is the official article; chain throw is a redirect). I plan to change one or the other eventually (frankly, I like "chain throw" better, because the throw is so much more important to the chain than the grab; any grab will work, but only a specific few throws, like Sheik's down throw, can chain).
  • There are some terms here that are rarely used ("High-jump glitch") that I keep just because there's no other way to describe the phenomenon. Maybe I should cull those terms too, in a second wave of edits. Something I'm considering.
  • I plan to comb through this article another time to work out capitalization (which is a little random now). I go by an instinctual rule - some terms just should be capitalized ("Hyrule Jump," "Luigi Ladder"), and some just shouldn't ("l-cancel," "pivot"). I haven't come up with any specific guidelines for capitalization - stuff (especially events, like the Hyrule Jump) that is very specific is probably more likely to be capitalized, but in the end all I do is run through the terms and see what looks right.
  • I'm considering adding more terms, such as "gentleman," though I don't want the glossary to become a catalogue of character-specific jargon. I guess my guideline for this is, any term that's known outside the private ring of character-users is fair play. So everybody knows what shine and knee and toe are, so they're in, but if non-Falcon players don't know what the gentleman is, it shouldn't be included in the glossary.

CleanupEdit

Personally I think a bullet should be added in front of each word – Smiddle / talk 19:17, January 18, 2007 (GMT)

The "Terminology" headline should be erased, and all "Terminology" in headlines should be erased, too Smiddle ( TalkConts ) 19:19, January 18, 2007 (GMT)

DeleteEdit

I don't think that this page is needed, everything in here should just get his own article and all those articles should be in a category named Terminology, so that this page has links to other articles instead of this mess.
