Article on Wikipedia Sonic the Hedgehog (character)

Sonic the Hedgehog (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ, Sonic the Hedgehog) is the main character of the Sonic the Hedgehog games and the mascot of Sega. Sonic was first introduced by Sega in 1991 in the game Sonic the Hedgehog to combat Nintendo's mascot, Mario. He is often thought of as Mario's unofficial rival, although they have appeared in games together. Alongside Solid Snake, he is a third-party character that made his Super Smash Bros. debut in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Sonic was announced to make a return in Super Smash Bros. 4 during a Nintendo Direct on October 1, 2013.

Description

Sonic is a male, 15 year-old, anthropomorphic hedgehog. He has spiky blue hair, green eyes, and red and white running shoes with gold buckles. He is only one meter (3ft, 3in) tall, though his height is noticeably increased for his appearances in the Super Smash Bros. series. As his name suggests, he is capable of running at supersonic speeds. The self-described "coolest, blue hedgehog alive," he has a bit of an attitude and is impatient, but cannot resist helping someone in need. He values freedom above all else and constantly campaigns to free animals imprisoned by the evil Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. Generally speaking, Sonic loves being able to do what he wants and loathes being constrained. He gathers golden rings for energy, and when he collects the seven Chaos Emeralds, he becomes Super Sonic, with yellow fur and red eyes, capable of flight. Most of the time, every challenge he faces seems enjoyable to him; another chance to get moving. However, he does take time to relax once in a while. Early Western profiles sometimes portrayed Sonic as being from the fictional planet Mobius, while Japanese profiles (which Western territories would follow starting in 1999 with Sonic Adventure) state that his birthplace is Christmas Island, a real world dependent territory of Australia.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

Although Sega and Nintendo were hardware and software rivals at the release of the Nintendo GameCube, Sonic's creator Yuji Naka claimed that there existed a possibility of including Sonic in Melee. However, time constraints apparently caused these plans to fall through. It would later be revealed that both Shigeru Miyamoto and Masahiro Sakurai would have been fine with the idea of Sonic in Melee.

While unofficial, an infamous hoax claimed that Sonic and Tails were unlockable in Melee. Despite having been proven as false, the hoax remains well-known in both the Super Smash Bros. community and the wider world of gaming.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Sonic is a playable character in Brawl and was confirmed on October 9th, 2007. He is the fastest character in the game, with attacks based largely on his earlier platforming games. His appearance is based on the "modern" Sonic appearance which debuted in Sonic Adventure. Sonic's Final Smash, Super Sonic, is a very powerful transformation that allows him to fly around the stage at incredible speed. Sonic also appears very late in the game's story mode, helping to defeat Tabuu in the final battle.

Sonic is ranked 22nd on the current tier list, placing him in the D tier. This is due to his severely unimpressive KO potential almost completely offsetting his amazing frame data and movement options.

The world's fastest hedgehog, who can run at supersonic speeds. Generally speaking, he loves being able to do what he wants and loathes being constrained. Holding still is something he would never consider. He's got a bit of an attitude but can't pass by someone in trouble. When he collects the seven Chaos Emeralds, he transforms into the mighty, gold Super Sonic.

In Super Smash Bros. 4

Sonic's return to the series was confirmed during the Nintendo Direct of October 1st, 2013. In addition to a slightly updated design, Sonic is now voiced by Roger Craig Smith, who succeeded Jason Griffith in 2010. Sonic also holds the distinction of being the first and currently only third-party character to be a veteran.

Sonic has been heavily buffed in the transition from Brawl to Super Smash Bros. 4. In addition to retaining his outstanding speed and mobility, Sonic's previously abysmal KO power has improved significantly and his combo game has been improved. While he received nerfs to his recovery and increased lag on some moves, the noticeable improvements to his KO potential have resulted in his viability improving compared to Brawl. This has been reflected with strong representation and great results in tournaments.

As a result of his improvements and competitive success, Sonic is currently ranked 5th place out of 58, placing him at the top of the A tier.

Trophies

Sonic
North America The main star of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He's an easygoing hedgehog who blows past the competition with his speed. Seriously, on the ground he's faster than anyone else in Smash Bros. Use this to your advantage, avoiding blows while landing lightning-fast attacks.
Europe A certain hedgehog from a certain series you just might have heard of. Unlike most hedgehogs, he's incredibly fast. Like most hedgehogs, however, he can't swim. He's by far the fastest runner of all the fighters, so take advantage of that by making sure no one gets the chance to hit him. (Just try not to end up in the water.)
Sonic (Alt.)
North America Sonic's up special Spring Jump lets him reach great heights by jumping on a spring, becoming invincible for a moment. He can't use any other specials during the jump, but he can attack or dodge. This move's great for returning from a long launch. Other fighters can use the spring, though!
Europe Sonic's Spring Jump up special lets you bounce to great heights and briefly makes you invincible at the start. You can't use other specials while in the air, but you can use normal attacks, dodge and so on. It's great for getting both back to the stage and out of tough spots, but just remember that everyone else can use the spring too!

Trivia

  • Sonic is the only third-party character to be playable in more than one Super Smash Bros. game.
  • Despite not being able to swim in his own games, Sonic is capable of swimming in the Super Smash Bros. series. However, to reflect his adverse mobility in water in his home series, he is one of the slowest swimmers in the games due to his swimming style being considerably more frantic than others.
    • Ironically, real world hedgehogs can swim, but have difficulty getting out of water.
  • Sonic has appeared alongside some Nintendo characters and every third-party character outside of the game in Super Smash Bros. 4:
