Carls493 (sometimes shortened to Carls) is a player from Columbus, Ohio. He played Fox in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and is ranked 8th on the final Ohio Brawl Power Rankings.
In Project M, Carls493 is a Wario main. He is ranked 2nd on the Columbus Power Rankings, with wins over Mango, XYK, and SoulPech, and is considered to be the best Wario in the Midwest. He nowadays only plays the game competitively at tournament venues that feature it alongside the current official Smash game at the time.
After the decline in activity for Brawl. Carls493 moved on to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and continued to be a Fox player in that game. He then later picked up Shulk as a co-main alongside Fox, and has claimed wins over Katakiri, ACNupp, TekNo, Kamui, CrazyColorz5, and Karinole primarily as Shulk. He was formerly ranked 10th on the 1st Ohio Smash 4 Power Rankings, but was considered the best Shulk player in Ohio by the end of the game's competitive lifespan.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Carls493 started the game out as a more full-fledged Shulk player, demoting Fox as one of his secondaries, and is considered one of the best Shulk players in Ohio after Darkshad. He has later on picked up Joker as another one of his strong secondaries, and is known to occasionally use other characters in competitive matches, as well, such as Pokémon Trainer, Sonic, Mega Man, and Inkling. He is currently ranked 3rd on the Columbus Ultimate Power Rankings and 12th on the Ohio Ultimate Power Rankings, claiming wins over Katakiri, Karinole, CrazyColorz5, TLOrEo, Mac Attk, Mindset, GoMan, BiggieCheeze, Abyss, and colinies.

Tag Origin
- The first half of his tag, "Carls", is simply his real name, "Carlos", without the "o". The second half, the number "493", comes from the total number of Pokémon in the Pokémon franchise as of Generation IV. It also refers to the final Pokémon of that generation, Arceus, being the #493 on the National Pokédex, and Carls' naive belief at the time that the series would end on that generation due to Arceus being known as the "God" and creator of the Pokémon universe. Humorously, he realized this before the number could also be used to reference two-thirds of his birthdate (April 1993), which is why he has yet to update the number to accommodate further Pokémon generations.
Trivia
- Despite his top-most frequent mains throughout his Smash career, Carls493's #1 video game favorite franchise is Sonic the Hedgehog, being the very first franchise that got him into video games. He occasionally pays tribute to Sonic by making his own music that's meant to emulate the music that can be heard from most of the Sega Genesis entries of the series.
- Carls493's knowledge of video games covers more than just Nintendo's first- and second-party franchises. As of the arrival of the Hero, Banjo & Kazooie, and Terry in Ultimate, Carls493 has had prior knowledge of every single third-party franchise in Smash that's represented by a playable character.
- Carls493 also enjoys playing traditional fighters competitively, such as Street Fighter IV, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Skullgirls, and Dragon Ball FighterZ.
- Carls493 runs a YouTube channel that focuses on video games, including playlists for every official Smash game and several franchises that have been featured in Smash, as well as many other games of multiple genres and various content ratings from big-time publishers to smaller indie/doujin developers. He prefers a more traditional or "retro" YouTube Gaming approach to his running his channel by not relying on voiced commentary over his playthroughs and matches, not creating webcam discussion videos, and not advertising his face and over-the-top reactions on his videos' thumbnails. He instead simply prefers to focus purely on the gameplay, itself, with his thoughts on the games usually explained in their video descriptions, or adding text to the videos, themselves, in guides.
- Carls493 is an avid fan, writer, editor, and overall contributor of the semi-formal TV Tropes Wiki website. He documents a personal page there that lists his favorite and most-notable contributions to the site, as well as listing all of the games that he has featured, or will feature, on his YouTube channel.
- Carls493 was an active member of the now-defunct Nintendo Dojo (formally All is Brawl) since 2009. He was known for his helpful, and informative blogs on Smash, other games, and other forms of entertainment media (such as Anime and Western Animation), alongside his decent Fox skills in the website's online tournaments and ladder ranking system for competitive Brawl, which would eventually lead him into attending tournaments in-person and becoming one of the longest-active non-Melee players of his Columbus Smash community. However, in contrast, he has also been known at times to take a brash and highly-defensive stance on certain topics in Nintendo Dojo.
