Slash
Slash is an attack effect in the Super Smash Bros. series that debuted in Super Smash Bros.. The slash effect generates a slash visual effect: a white and blue circular slash in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee, and a crescent-shaped visual effect from Super Smash Bros. Brawl onward.
Slash attacks are boosted by Slash Attack stickers in Super Smash Bros. Brawl's The Subspace Emissary and certain Spirit Battle conditions in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Additionally, they are resisted by Slash Resistance stickers in The Subspace Emissary.
StabEdit
Stab is an attack effect in the Super Smash Bros. series that debuted in Super Smash Bros. 4. The stab effect generates a stabbing visual effect, a straight line in the direction of the attack (as opposed to a crescent-like effect produced by slash attacks).
Stab attacks are boosted by certain Spirit Battle conditions in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Sound effectsEdit
While sound effects are not tied to attack effects, there are several different slashing sounds effects that are often used by attacks with a slash effect; there are two slashing sound effects in Super Smash Bros., while Melee, Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate each have three, while Brawl has one sound played at differing speeds and pitches (e.g. Link's down aerial has a low pitch, whereas Bowser's neutral attack has a medium pitch). However, because sound effects and attack effects are separate, many slashing moves use other sound effects; for example, Fox's clean up smash in Brawl, SSB4 and Ultimate uses a kicking sound effect, while Roy's non-sweetspotted sword moves use punching sound effects.
In Melee and Ultimate, two slash attacks that collide will produce a clanging sound effect reminiscent of metallic noises akin to swords clashing.
In Brawl, SSB4 and Ultimate, there is a set of slash-based sound effects that are noticeably slower and deeper pitched than regular slash sounds. In Brawl, these were reserved for Ike because of Ragnell's status as a heavy broadsword. In SSB4, these sound effects, which have been altered, are also used as part of Pair Up, Shulk's Back Slash if he hits an opponent's back with the move, and Dunban's attacks during Chain Attack. In Ultimate, these sounds also play for Marth and Roy's sweet spotted sword attacks, alongside all of Chrom's sword attacks.
