Shy Guys (ヘイホー, Heiho) are enemies originating in the Mario series, which also commonly appear in the Yoshi games.

Origin

A pair of Shy Guys as they originally appeared in Super Mario Bros. 2.

Shy Guys first appeared as common enemies in the Japan-only game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, repurposed as Super Mario Bros. 2 for international markets. They simply walk around, and like most other enemies can be picked up and thrown.

Their design features an iconic mask that has two eyeholes and a mouth. The Super Mario Strikers series shows that they have several masks that display different emotions, which they swap between when they need to. They are also highly secretive about their true appearance, desperately trying to hide themselves in the few times their mask falls off. As shown by Shy Guy's celebration cutscene in Mario Power Tennis, Luigi is the only one to have canonically seen a Shy Guy's real face. Shy Guys appear in a variety of colors, with red Shy Guys being the most common.

They often appear in spin-off Mario games with several roles. Within the Mario Kart series, Shy Guys made their playable debut in Mario Kart DS: in the download play multiplayer, players can only play as Shy Guy in their standard kart, marked with the emblem of their mask. Starting with Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island they became the basic common enemy in the Yoshi games.

Their charging attack in Smash Run appears to be a combination of attacks they could use in Paper Mario and Paper Mario: Sticker Star, namely charging at Mario in the former and hitting him with flailing arms in the latter.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee

Propeller Shy Guys, a subspecies of Shy Guys, appear in the Yoshi's Story stage, flying across the screen in groups at random intervals. They cannot harm the players, but can be hit by any attack. Some of them carry food (unless food items are disabled), which they will drop as soon as they get knocked out. They also appear as a trophy simply called "Shy Guys".

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Shy Guys drive karts as Mute City-style hazards on the Mario Circuit stage, that inflict 15%/10% damage to a character when contact is made. They can be hit with attacks or items; once defeated, they start spinning out of control, becoming harmless.

Shy Guy

A character in a white mask with black eyes and mouth that appears in a number of Mario and Yoshi games. Although Shy Guys' actions are varied--from flying to carrying objects--their true faces are still a mystery. If only for an instant, who wouldn't want to see an unmasked Shy Guy?

As a stage hazard

Shy Guys appear as stage hazards on Rainbow Road, where, similar to their role in Mario Circuit, they drive karts which can hurt characters. Unlike in Mario Circuit, they cannot be attacked, and they appear in a variety of colors including black and blue.

In Smash Run

Red, light-blue, yellow, and green Shy Guys appear in Smash Run as enemies. Light-blue Shy Guys have more health, red ones deal more damage, green ones are faster, and yellow ones jump higher. When approached, they will jump in place a few times before charging at the player while flailing their arms. Each type of Shy Guy drops stat boosts related to its specialty: Defense, Attack, Speed, and Jump respectively.

What hides behind that smooth, white mask? Shy Guys aren't about to show you, that's for sure. In Smash Run, each color of Shy Guy has different characteristics, and the red ones are the best at attacking. They've learned how to deliver a combo of angry punches if they can get close enough!

These bashful baddies are so shy that no one's ever seen their real faces. Since their debut, all kinds of different Shy Guys have come out of the woodwork, and in Smash Run, each colour has its strengths. The red ones are better at attacking and hit you with punch combos. Beat them to get your hands on some Attack stat boosts.

Blue Shy Guy

These guys are too shy to show you their real faces, so they hide them behind white masks. Some people claim they've seen Shy Guys walking on stilts or even running around on fire! In Smash Run, the blue Shy Guys have better defense than other Shy Guys, but that really isn't saying much...

Just what IS beneath this Shy Guy's mask? Could it be...another mask?! Anyway, Shy Guys come in lots of varieties: some walk on stilts, others are always on fire! In Smash Run, these blue ones have better defence than the others. It's only slightly better, though, so don't worry. Defeat them to get yourself some Defence stat boosts.

Yellow Shy Guy

Those white masks are just eerie, but it's possible they are better than what actually hides behind them... Anyway, some people claim to have seen tall Shy Guys with longer masks than normal. In Smash Run, yellow Shy Guys are great jumpers, so they'll drop Jump stat boosts when defeated.

Did you know there are lots of different kinds of Shy Guy, including massive ones with giant masks? In Smash Run, yellow Shy Guys are slightly better at jumping than the others. Sometimes, though, they're just too busy bouncing to attack. Take them down to get Jump stat boosts.

Green Shy Guy

Perhaps the white mask just conceals another, whiter mask beneath? There is no way to know, as these shy fellows will never take them off. In Smash Run, the green Shy Guys can run faster than other Shy Guys. You'll have to be quick to catch them, but you'll be rewarded with Speed stat boosts!

Their white masks certainly make them look the same, but on the inside, Shy Guys are very different - some dream of being soldiers or dancers! In Smash Run, the green ones are fast on their feet, so they're quick to close in and hit you with a punch combo. Deal with them to get Speed stat boosts.

Shy Guy + Standard Kart

Shy Guy makes his debut as a racer in Mario Kart 7 once you win the 150cc Shell Cup. He's a lightweight racer with superb handling. Watch out for the eight Shy Guys racing around the Rainbow Road stage—they'll happily run you over if you get in their way!

Shy Guy makes his debut as a selectable character in Mario Kart 7, and all you have to do to unlock him is win the 150cc Shell Cup. He's lightweight, like Toad and Koopa, and has excellent handling. The Rainbow Road stage has eight Shy Guys whizzing around the track, so be careful not to get hit, or you'll go speeding off the stage!

Shy Guys appear as stage hazards in both the old and the new Mario Circuit stages. In the new Mario Circuit, they cannot be attacked. Like in Brawl, only red Shy Guys appear as drivers.

Shy Guy

These bashful baddies are so shy that no one's ever seen their real faces. They debuted in Doki Doki Panic before becoming a Mario series mainstay when that game was reworked into Super Mario Bros. 2. They come in different colors, each with unique characteristics. Some can walk on stilts; others are always on fire!

Shy Guys reappear as stage hazards on the returning Yoshi's Story, Figure-8 Circuit (formerly Mario Circuit (SSBB)) and Mario Circuit stages. Their behavior appears to be unchanged from the previous games.

As a Costume

The Shy Guy Mask appears as a headgear option for Mii Fighters.

Spirit

Shy Guy appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Novice-class primary spirit and is featured in the Roger the Potted Ghost spirit.

In Adventure Mode: World of Light, Shy Guy is presumably one of the countless spirits captured by Galeem during his takeover of the universe. Geno's spirit is located in the hill section of The Light Realm.

Shy Guy uses the Mii Brawler, Mii Gunner, and Mii Swordfighter puppet fighters wearing the Shy Guy outfit and is fought on the Mushroom Kingdom II stage's Battlefield form. During the battle, Throwing Type items will appear while the puppet fighters use neutral specials, referencing the projectiles launched by the similar-looking Snifit enemies.

During the Roger the Potted Ghost spirit battle, the Shy Guy uses two Meta Knight puppet fighters and is fought on the Dracula's Castle stage's Ω form. They are fought along with the Giant Wii Fit Trainer puppet fighter. During the battle, the fighters' jumping power are decreased, and the player has one minute to defeat the Wii Fit Trainer.
