Psystrike (サイコブレイク, Psycho Break) is Mewtwo's Final Smash.
Overview
Mewtwo Mega Evolves into its Mega Mewtwo Y form and throws forward a large energy sphere which can trap multiple opponents: those caught in the blast are held still and receive a mental shock, then they are dealt 30% damage and massive knockback. It can KO Mario from the middle of Final Destination at 52%. This move also ignores invincibility except that of the Super Star.
Time is slowed down before the sphere is fired and right before opponents get launched. This is one of the few ways to see Screen KOs slowed down.
Origin
Mega Mewtwo Y is one of Mewtwo's two possible Mega Evolutions, available when it is holding a Mewtwonite Y (found in Pokémon Y, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and purchasable in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon). This transformation causes Mewtwo to become smaller and more childlike, similar to Mew, rather than larger and more imposing like most other Mega Evolutions—including its other form, Mega Mewtwo X. Despite its fragile appearance, it gains major boosts to most of its stats, in exchange for lower Defense.
While the playable Mewtwo is primarily based on the character from the first Pokémon movie, Mega Mewtwo Y first appeared in the anime as an alternate form for a different Mewtwo from the sixteenth movie, before its debut in the games proper.
Psystrike is Mewtwo's signature move, introduced in Generation V and learned at Level 100. Despite being a special move, it uses the target's physical Defense stat when calculating damage. It is a more powerful and devastating version of Psyshock.

Mewtwo's Final Smash starts as Mewtwo Mega Evolves into Mega Mewtwo Y. It then fires a huge psychic projectile that penetrates enemies and obstacles. This projectile doesn't do any damage, but it freezes every foe it hits in place. They can even be frozen midjump! Afterward, every foe hit with the projectile will take a powerful psychic hit to the head.

Trivia
- Despite Psystrike being Mewtwo's signature move, it was introduced in Generation V, in which Mewtwo could not be obtained except by trade, Poké Transfer, or Nintendo events.
- Psystrike and Volt Tackle are the only Final Smashes from the Pokémon universe that has the names of actual moves from the series, excluding Triple Finish's usage of three canonical moves and Max Malicious Moonsault's resemblance.
- Mewtwo unleashes a barely-audible cry that is obscured by the sound the Final Smash makes. The cry can be heard more clearly if sound effects are set to mute from the options menu or from Mewtwo's sound test.
- Psystrike’s portrayal in Smash appears to be the exact opposite of its depiction in the Pokémon series, being a mental psychic pulse. In actuality, it is frequently portrayed as a physical projectile, either as a barrage of stones or a large meteor, hence the move factoring in the opponent’s Defense stat. It is only one of two Psychic-type moves with this property.
- Incidentally, Psystrike's animation was updated in Generation VII to resemble its depiction in Smash.
- Psystrike, as well as Lucario's Aura Storm, in Ultimate was the last time Mega Evolution was seen before their removal in Pokémon Sword and Shield.
