List of largest Smash tournaments

An icon used in notice templates. NOTE: Tournaments that still have their registration open may not be included on this list.

This is a list of the largest Smash tournaments in history based on the number of confirmed entrants for each event. It includes the top 30 largest Smash tournaments over any game in the series, as well as listings for each individual game separately (including the Project M mod). Only 1v1 singles tournaments are included. Online tournaments are not included.

To qualify for one of these lists, a tournament must have a minimum of 100 entrants, with the exception of the "Split by Game" section.

The record for largest Smash tournament is currently held by EVO 2019, with 3,534 entrants for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Record progressionEdit

OverallEdit

This table lists the historical timeline of the records for the largest Smash tournament of all time overall.

Note: Due to a lack of verifiable data, records from 2003 and earlier remain unclear. Notably, there are claims that IVGF NorthWest Regionals had 151 entrants, which would have made it the largest Smash tournament until MELEE-FC3, but due to the lack of definitive sources to verify that number, it is excluded from this list. Tournament Go 4 and Tournament Go 5 could have each also possibly held the record for largest Smash tournament in their time with their purported entrant count of up to around 90, but they remain similarly excluded from this list for their exact attendance being unverifiable.

Dates held Tournament Game Entrants Winner Notes
January 10th-July 9th, 2004 Game Over   85   Ken While there were possibly larger tournaments before Game Over, this is the first tournament of a major-level scale to have a verified exact entrant count.
July 9th-August 21st, 2004 MELEE-FC1   98   Ken
August 21st, 2004-January 15th, 2005 Tournament Go 6   112   Ken The first tournament to have verifiably exceeded 100 entrants.
January 15th-July 10th, 2005 MOAST 3   128   Isai
July 10th, 2005-July 13th, 2006 MELEE-FC3   186   Ken
July 13th-October 13th, 2006 MELEE-FC6   205   PC Chris
October 13th, 2006-July 12th, 2007 MLG New York Playoffs 2006   208   Azen Beat the record for the largest Smash tournament overall by the smallest margin, at just 3 more entrants than Melee at MELEE-FC6.
July 12th-August 24th, 2007 MELEE-FC Diamond   256   Mew2King
August 24th, 2007-August 30th, 2008 EVO World 2007   270   Ken Fastest to beat the record for the largest Smash tournament overall at 41 days after MELEE-FC Diamond, if Melee and Smash 4 breaking the record at the same tournament at both EVO 2015 and EVO 2016 are not counted.
August 30th, 2008-January 16th, 2010 AxisGaming   303   DSF First time a game other than Melee has beaten the record for the largest Smash tournament overall. Largest Smash tournament of the 2000s.
January 16th, 2010-January 6th, 2012 Pound 4   347   Mango Largest Melee tournament in the pre-EVO 2013 era.
January 6th, 2012-July 12th, 2013 Apex 2012   400   Otori Current record holder for the largest Brawl tournament.
July 12th, 2013-July 11th, 2014 EVO 2013   709   Mango This tournament is considered the beginning of the Platinum Age, and despite an unprecedented number of entrants, it would be followed by even larger tournaments in the years to come.
July 11th, 2014-January 30th, 2015 EVO 2014   970   Mango
January 30th-July 17th, 2015 Apex 2015   1,037   PPMD First tournament to reach 1,000 entrants, and, since EVO 2013, the only non-EVO tournament to ever hold the record as the largest Smash tournament overall. However, due to the tournament's venue change, a significant number of players are suspected to have been unable to show up to the new venue. Thus, based on actual attendance, it is disputable whether Apex 2015 can be considered as holding the title of the largest Smash tournament of all time. It would also break the record for the largest tournament in the most Smash games at three: Smash 64, Melee, and Smash Wii U. It was the largest tournament before DLC fighters were added to Smash Wii U.
July 17th-19th, 2015 EVO 2015   1,869   Armada While Melee at EVO 2015 broke the record for the largest Smash tournament overall, Smash Wii U had more entrants at the same event.
July 17th, 2015-July 15th, 2016 EVO 2015   1,926   ZeRo Beat the record for the largest Smash tournament overall by the largest margin, at 889 more entrants than Melee at Apex 2015.
July 15th-17th, 2016 EVO 2016   2,372   Hungrybox Current record holder for the largest Melee tournament; first Smash tournament to break 2,000 entrants, along with Smash Wii U at the same event. Just like the previous EVO, Melee at EVO 2016 broke the record for the largest Smash tournament overall, but Smash Wii U had more entrants at the same event.
July 15th, 2016-August 2nd, 2019 EVO 2016   2,662   Ally Current record holder for the largest Smash 4 tournament. It was the first Smash tournament to break 2,000 entrants, along with Melee at the same event. It was the largest tournament before DLC fighters finished releasing in Smash Wii U.
August 2nd, 2019-present EVO 2019   3,534   MkLeo Current record holder for the largest Smash tournament of all time, and currently the largest Ultimate tournament. It is the first Smash tournament to break 3,000 entrants. It has held the record for the largest Smash tournament overall. It was the largest tournament before DLC fighters finished releasing in Ultimate.

January 30th, 2015-January 15th, 2016 Apex 2015 188   SuPeRbOoMfAn Due to the tournament's venue change, a significant number of players are suspected to have been unable to show up to the new venue, and Smash 64 had 68 DQs. Thus, based on actual attendance, it is disputable whether Apex 2015 can be considered as holding the title of the largest Smash 64 tournament of all time. It would also break the record for the largest tournament in the most Smash games at three: Smash 64, Melee, and Smash Wii U.
January 15th-August 11th, 2016 GENESIS 3 238   wario
August 11th, 2016-present Super Smash Con 2016 314   SuPeRbOoMfAn Current record holder, and beat the record for the largest Smash 64 tournament by the largest margin at 76 more than GENESIS 3. It has held the record for the longest time in Smash 64.

Super Smash Bros. MeleeEdit

This table lists the historical timeline of the records for the largest Melee tournament of all time.

Note: Due to a lack of verifiable data, records from 2003 and earlier remain unclear. Notably, there are claims that IVGF NorthWest Regionals had 151 entrants, which would have made it the largest Melee tournament until MELEE-FC3, but due to the lack of definitive sources to verify that number, it is excluded from this list. Tournament Go 4 and Tournament Go 5 could have each also possibly held the record for largest Melee tournament in their time with their purported entrant count of up to around 90, but they remain similarly excluded from this list for their exact attendance being unverifiable.

Dates held Tournament Entrants Winner Notes
October 13th, 2006-July 12th, 2007 MLG New York Playoffs 2006 208   Azen Beat the record for the largest Melee tournament by the smallest margin, at just 3 more entrants than MELEE-FC6, which is also the smallest margin for a record for a largest Smash tournament out of any Smash game overall.
July 12th-August 24th, 2007 MELEE-FC Diamond 256   Mew2King
August 24th, 2007-July 10th, 2009 EVO World 2007 270   Ken Fastest to beat the record for the largest Melee tournament at 41 days after MELEE-FC Diamond. Largest pre-Brawl tournament.

July 12th, 2013-July 11th, 2014 EVO 2013 709   Mango Beat Pound 4's record with twice the amount of entrants. This tournament is considered the beginning of the Platinum Age, and despite an unprecedented number of entrants, it would be followed by even larger tournaments in the years to come.
July 11th, 2014-January 30th, 2015 EVO 2014 970   Mango Largest pre-Smash 4 tournament.
January 30th-July 17th, 2015 Apex 2015 1,037   PPMD First tournament to reach 1,000 entrants, and, since EVO 2013, the only non-EVO tournament to ever hold the record as the largest Melee tournament. However, due to the tournament's venue change, a significant number of players are suspected to have been unable to show up to the new venue. Thus, based on actual attendance, it is disputable whether Apex 2015 can be considered as holding the title of the largest Melee tournament of all time. It would also break the record for the largest tournament in the most Smash games at three: Smash 64, Melee, and Smash Wii U.
July 17th, 2015-July 15th, 2016 EVO 2015 1,869   Armada Beat the record for the largest Melee tournament by the largest margin, at 832 more entrants than Apex 2015.

Super Smash Bros. BrawlEdit

This table lists the historical timeline of the records for the largest Brawl tournament of all time.

Note: This does not include the Super Smash Bros. Brawl American Circuit due to being held before Brawl's release in North America.

It beat the record for the largest Smash tournament overall, beating 270 entrants for Melee at EVO World 2007.
January 6th, 2012-present Apex 2012 400   Otori Current record holder, and the only record for the largest Brawl tournament set outside of 2008. It beat the record for the largest Smash tournament overall, beating 347 entrants for Melee at Pound 4. Because no Brawl tournament has beaten the record since, it has held the record for the largest tournament for the longest out of Brawl or any Smash game overall.

Super Smash Bros. 4Edit

This table lists the historical timeline of the records for the largest Smash 4 tournament of all time.

Dates held Tournament Version Entrants Winner Notes
September 23rd-October 12th, 2014 Umebura 8   170   Nietono First Smash 4 tournament to reach 100 entrants.

January 30th-July 17th, 2015 Apex 2015   837   ZeRo Fastest to beat the record for the largest Smash 4 tournament at just 13 days after Final Battle. Due to the tournament's venue change, a significant number of players are suspected to have been unable to show up to the new venue, and Smash 4 had 103 DQs. If it was the largest tournament in both Smash 64 and Melee, it would break the record for the largest tournament in the most Smash games at three: Smash 64, Melee, and Smash Wii U. It would also have more than triple the attendants than Final Battle. It was the largest tournament before DLC fighters were added.
July 17th, 2015-July 15th, 2016 EVO 2015   1,926   ZeRo First Smash 4 tournament to reach 1,000 entrants; has beaten the record by the largest margin out of any largest Smash tournament record at 1,089 more entrants than Apex 2015, which is more than twice the entrants. Super Smash Bros. UltimateEdit

This table lists the historical timeline of the records for the largest Ultimate tournament of all time.

Dates held Tournament Entrants Winner Notes
December 8th-15th, 2018 Torneo Redragon - Smash Ultimate en Open Arena 141   MK~IoRi Being held on the same day, these five tournaments tied for the first Ultimate tournament to reach 100 entrants. Note that while NEW GAME PLUS started on December 7th, Ultimate singles started on December 8th. This is also by far the fastest a Smash game has had a tournament with 100 entrants or more post-release, only a day after its launch on December 7th, 2018. Although EVO 2015 and EVO 2016 broke entrant records simultaneously in different games, this is the first time a record has been held on the same day within one game.
Smash Ultimate Launch Event 141   PkChris
Launch 166   ZD
NEW GAME PLUS: The ULTIMATE Overnight Experience 196   Ned
SLGC Smash Ultimate Release Tournament 243   VaLoR
December 15th, 2018 Smash Out 2018 357   yeti Both tied from being held on the same day. Don't Park on the Grass 2018 was one of the first national Ultimate tournaments. With Umebura SP the following day, or because of Don't Park on the Grass 2018's and Umebura SP's Ultimate singles starting eight and a half hours apart due to time zones, this is the shortest time a tournament has held the record for the largest Smash tournament out of any game.
Don't Park on the Grass 2018 581   MVD
December 16th, 2018-February 1st, 2019 Umebura SP 745   Shuton First Ultimate major in Japan. Largest tournament before DLC fighters released. The event held the record for the largest one-day tournament in Smash history, before being surpassed by Umebura SP 6 ten months later.

August 2nd, 2019-present EVO 2019 3,534   MkLeo Current record holder, and currently the largest Smash tournament of all time. It is the first Smash tournament to break 3,000 entrants. EVO 2019 also broke the record by the largest margin out of any largest Smash tournament record, with over 1,300 more than the last record. It has held the record for the largest Ultimate tournament for the longest time, at three years, coincidentally passing GENESIS 6 on the same day one year after GENESIS 6 was held. It has also held the record for the largest Smash tournament in the series overall for the longest time. It was the largest tournament before DLC fighters finished releasing.
