Origin

A jazzy synth rock remix of the athletic and ground theme from New Super Mario Bros. 2. Despite what the name implies, this is a medley of the reoccuring "Athletic" and "Ground" themes from the general New Super Mario Bros. series (minus New Super Mario Bros. U); the song's name refers to their usage in New Super Mario Bros. 2 to correlate with Golden Plains, the stage it plays on. While the Ground theme and Athletic theme usually share the same general melody and chord progression, they differ in instrumentation and refrains; the remix in Smash is mostly based on the Athletic theme, while including both of the refrains from the Athletic and Ground theme.

Lyrics

Here we go, off the rails
Don't you know it's time to raise our sails?
It's freedom like you never knew
Don't need bags or a pass
Say the word, I'll be there in a flash
You could say my hat is off to you

Oh, we can zoom all the way to the moon
From this great wide wacky world
Jump with me, grab coins with me
Oh yeah!

It's time to jump up in the air (Jump up in the air)
Jump up, don't be scared (Jump up, don't be scared)
Jump up and your cares will soar away
And if the dark clouds start to swirl (Dark clouds start to swirl)
Don't fear, don't shed a tear, 'cause
I'll be your 1UP girl

So let's all jump up super high (Jump up super high)
High up in the sky (High up in the sky)
There's no power-up like dancing
You know that you're my superstar (You're my superstar)
No one else can take me this far
I'm flipping the switch
Get ready for this
Oh, let's do the odyssey

Odyssey, ya see! (×7)
Odyssey, odyssey!

Spin the wheel, take a chance
Every journey starts a new romance
A new world's calling out to you
Take a turn off the path
Find a new addition to the cast
You know that any captain needs a crew

Take it in stride as you move side to side
They're just different points of view
Jump with me, grab coins with me
Oh yeah!

Come on and jump up in the air (Jump up in the air)
Jump without a care (Jump without a care)
Jump up 'cause you know that I'll be there
And if you find you're short on joy (Find you're short on joy)
Don't fret, just don't forget that
You're still our 1UP boy

So go on, straighten up your cap (Straighten up your cap)
Let your toes begin to tap (Toes begin to tap)
This rhythm is a power 'shroom
Don't forget you're the superstar (You're the superstar)
No one else could make it this far
Put a comb through that 'stache
Now you've got panache
Oh, let's do the odyssey

Odyssey, ya see! (x7)
Odyssey, odyssey!

Lyrics

Smash through the blocks that bar your way
No time for fear, just let it all fall away (all fall away)

Nobody believes in me and you, just look at the way they stare
So what if we live in a walled garden, as long as I've got you then I don't care

Kick off the wall and take the plunge
Tripping through two dimensions
Up on the moon we'll twirl and swoon
Just lead the way (and I'll follow you)

I'll throw my hat in the ring, 'cause you're the one
A miracle in three dimensions
Follow the brick path straight to my heart
And we'll grab the flag together, the fireworks are gonna start

Shake off the chains, you're running free
You'll be amazed at all that there is to see (there is to see)

Together we're racing for the goal, and no one can stop us now
Maybe we don't know where we're going, but we're gonna get there somehow

Climb up the vine and land in the clouds
Maybe then we'll swap up for down
'Cross the sea we're still you and me
I'll follow you (Just lead the way)

You've got me over the moon, and that's no jest
We're miles above the rest
Look in your eyes and I know we'll be fine
So let's shoot for the stars and make this love really shine

Nobody believes in me and you, just look at the way they stare
So what if we live in a walled garden, as long as I've got you then I don't care

Kick off the wall and take the plunge
Tripping through two dimensions
Up on the moon we'll twirl and swoon
Just lead the way (and I'll follow you)

I'll throw my hat in the ring, 'cause you're the one
A miracle in three dimensions
Follow the brick path straight to my heart
And we'll grab the flag together, the fireworks are gonna start

Origin

The original overworld themes from Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. U, ported straight from each game's original release. This track is the only one exclusive to a certain stage, that being Super Mario Maker, and consists of the four songs transitioning amongst themselves whenever the stage's style changes. However, if the stage is selected as Final Destination, regular, small or big Battlefield without picking a song, this theme may be selected as the battle theme.

Trivia

  • Ground Theme 2 (Super Mario Bros.) is the only Mario track from previous entries to not return in Ultimate.
  • Despite Yoshi's Island (Melee) originating from a Mario game (in this case, Super Mario World), the game considers it as belonging to the Yoshi universe. As such, no tracks from the Mario games can be played on the stage except for Athletic Theme - Super Mario World, which is listed in the Yoshi series tracklist due to being its original assigned song.
  • Although "Jump Up, Super Star!" has an official Japanese translation, the Japanese release of Ultimate only includes the English version. This is consistent with the Japanese release of Super Mario Odyssey, where the New Donk City Festival likewise features "Jump Up, Super Star!" in English. This is also true with the song "Break Free (Lead the Way)".
  • The original Ground Theme (Super Mario Bros. 3) is not available as an independent music option, unlike its three counterparts in Ground Theme - Super Mario series. This was not the case in Smash 4 and appears to be an oversight.
  • Two music tracks hailing from the Mario series appear in Mii Fighter showcase videos, but don't appear in-game.
  • This is the first game since the original where the Mario series does not have more original tracks than any other series.
  • When sorting the songs in My Music by year, the placement of Mario Tennis / Mario Golf is based on the original Mario Golf and Mario Tennis games, which released in 1999 and 2000 respectively, rather than the source games, Mario Power Tennis and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour.
  • This is the first game in the Super Smash Bros. series to not feature a brand new arrangement of the main theme from Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. is one of four universes in Ultimate to feature songs from pre-release material, with the other three being The Legend of Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Kingdom Hearts.
