Changes from Super Smash Bros. Brawl

An icon used in notice templates. NOTE: SmashWiki is not speculative. Please refrain from adding detailed data values derived from pre-release gameplay footage, such as the E3 demo. Such data (damage values, launch trajectories, frame data, etc.) are subject to change before the official release.

Aesthetics

  • Change Ivysaur's design and proportions now match its appearance in more recent Pokémon titles. Its flower bud has multiple layers of petals and a smoother texture.
  • Change Ivysaur is much more expressive than it was in Brawl.
  • Change Ivysaur always faces the screen regardless of which direction it turns. This also causes its moveset to be mirrored.

Attributes

  • Buff Like all characters, Ivysaur's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete.
  • Buff The Stamina mechanic has been removed, eliminating the necessity of switching out Pokémon to restore their power.
  • Buff The removal of edgehogging improves Ivysaur's tether-dependent recovery.

Ground attacks

  • Buff Rapid jab now has a finishing hit - a double vine slap.
  • Buff Forward tilt has more range and deals more damage.
  • Change Down tilt hits only once instead of twice.
  • Change Dash attack has a new animation, with Ivysaur performing a shoulder charge/headbutt.
  • Buff Down smash has much more range.

Aerial Attacks

  • Change Neutral aerial has a new animation where Ivysaur points its bud towards the screen and spins its leaves, hitting 6 times.
  • Buff Neutral aerial has more range than the previous one, and its hitboxes are disjointed.
  • Nerf Neutral aerial has more landing lag.
  • Nerf Back aerial's first hit has slightly more startup lag, although the second hit is unchanged. Both hits have slightly less range.
  • Buff Up aerial no longer causes Ivysaur to fast fall. This makes it easier to use as a conventional aerial attack and less risky to use offstage.
  • Nerf Up aerial is more punishable since Ivysaur no longer launches itself away from the opponent.
  • Buff Down aerial's entire hitbox is a spike rather than having a small sweetspot and a large sourspot. It also no longer halts Ivysaur's horizontal momentum.

Throws/other attacks

  • Buff Standing grab has less end lag.

Special Moves

  • Buff Bullet Seed now has a finishing hit, making it less punishable.
  • Change Bullet Seed's seeds are larger but less numerous.
  • Buff Razor Leaf travels faster and the smash input variant travels further.
  • Buff Vine Whip can now be angled upward as well as diagonally.
  • Nerf Vine Whip can no longer be performed out of an airdodge.
  • Nerf Grounded Vine Whip no longer has a grounded hitbox.
  • Buff Pokémon Change can now be used in the air and is much quicker, allowing the user to potentially combo into another Pokémon's moves or choose the recovery move that suits their situation best. Like in Brawl, it also offers brief intangibility during the switch, giving it the functionality of a dodge, even in the air.
    • Nerf If Pokémon Change is used repeatedly, it will grant no invincibility frames for a period of time. Pokémon Change also has a cooldown of around two seconds.
  • Change Triple Finish has a different text box and animations, making it identical to how they appear in the Generation VII games.
