ProposalEdit

It needs work, but I think we could use a help page on edit summaries. Toomai Glittershine   The Riotous 14:42, 29 July 2014 (EDT)

Support Just as long as we don't start harassing users to use summaries for every edit, which imo can get annoying. RoyboyX Talk 15:13, 29 July 2014 (EDT)

Only critique is to agree with Royboy; a minor note should be added saying that not every edit needs an edit summary. Miles (talk) 23:16, 30 July 2014 (EDT)

Support Edit summaries should be a common aspect when editing wikis. Dots (talk)   The Achiever 23:29, 30 July 2014 (EDT)

Okay I've gone and done some rewriting to try and get across that summaries are not mandatory for every single edit. Toomai Glittershine   The Quintonic 12:21, 2 August 2014 (EDT)

Support Yeah. Scr7 (talk · contribs) 19:06, 2 August 2014 (EDT)

Support Per the other users; they're also very useful guidelines on how summaries should be generally structured. --Timson622222 (talk) 23:28, 2 August 2014 (EDT)

Support Agreed. --Starman125 (talk) 23:36, 2 August 2014 (EDT)

I think this is safe to pass, anything we find wrong we can fix. RoyboyX Talk 22:28, 3 August 2014 (EDT)

Support Yep, looks good to me. Berrenta (talk) 22:47, 3 August 2014 (EDT)

Support. Much more fluid and well-written. Penro, the  and   main. 17:31, 21 January 2016 (EST)

I think as a help page this would be fine, but I'm still not convinced it should be just a help page. Since the edit summaries policy failed we've actually effectively been enforcing it as a policy without reason. I'm not convinced we shouldn't just reopen that. ---Preceding unsigned comment added by you. Or maybe DatNuttyKid. 18:41, 21 January 2016 (EST)

Understood, but for the time being, this should function as a help page. Discussion on whether or not to make it more than that should take place at a different time. Serpent   King 19:06, 21 January 2016 (EST)
Then I guess very weak support. ---Preceding unsigned comment added by you. Or maybe DatNuttyKid. 19:14, 21 January 2016 (EST)

New usersEdit

It's basically been an unwritten rule, and it's happened enough to the point where it should be noted here. Besides, is there anything about the line that you really disagree with? Should we get mad at newbies for not knowing what an edit summary is? Awesome Cardinal 2000 13:27, 1 March 2018 (EST)

On one hand, Ac2k has a point; most new users don't even know the RC exists. On the other, those same users don't likely read their talk pages either (much less respond to comments left for them). Aidan, the Rurouni 13:36, 1 March 2018 (EST)
The thing about talk pages is that all users receive a notification saying that they have a new message on their talk page, so they would be more likely to read that than an edit summary. If they choose to ignore it, then it's a problem of not obeying the rules, instead of being unaware that they were doing wrong. Awesome Cardinal 2000 13:50, 1 March 2018 (EST)

@Black Vulpine: Read the damn talk page. This was discussed already. If you don't like it then say something. Awesome Cardinal 2000 12:22, 2 March 2018 (EST)

As per Aidan, as well as my own experiences, past performance indicates that posting on talk pages for new users is no more effective than edit summaries. So what's the point? Black Vulpine of the Furry Nation. Furries make the internets go! :3 17:25, 2 March 2018 (EST)
You're misunderstanding the point of this. It's not concerning whether you post on a talk page and the user straight up ignores it, nothing's going to fix that. What's problematic is people commenting in edit summaries, and then getting mad at the newbie because they "didn't read the edit summary." Awesome Cardinal 2000 20:09, 2 March 2018 (EST)
So your proposed change will result in people getting mad because they're not reading the talk pages. It will change nothing. Black Vulpine of the Furry Nation. Furries make the internets go! :3 20:16, 2 March 2018 (EST)
It will prevent users from getting mad at newbies for not reading the edit summaries, where saying things like "Stop ignoring my edit summaries" could intimidate or scare the new user who is still learning the ropes. Just because your efforts to communicate with newbies have failed doesn't mean that this will never happen again, and it needs to be addressed. Awesome Cardinal 2000 20:20, 2 March 2018 (EST)
In the end, the talk page should really be used to tell a user what they are doing wrong, because a summary is easily missed. The summary is mostly to explain your edit and why you did it, not to critique other users. Serpent   King 20:27, 2 March 2018 (EST)
