Forums: Index Watercooler Stop the Pictoquotes

OK, I'm getting tired of the Pictoquotes. They take up more space, make the pages hard to read, and violate the User Talk guidelines. User talk pages were never meant to be communication tools for anything other than wikia related content. If you want to send people pictures, there are many free e-mail services, instant messengers, message boards, image hosting site, and many other things. If you don't have them, they are free to get. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 18:29, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Correction: They're on the User pages, not the talk pages. But really, when there were 1 or 2 people having the pictoquotes, it was fun, but now, it kinda lost meaning to me since 50 people have them... Get rid of it. Friedbeef1 Ho ho ho! 18:31, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
I think that making a single, official Smash Arena one would remove the clutter. Thoughts? Miles (talk) 18:33, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
The Smash Arena is a different problem entirely. What I'm concerned about is people just randomly inserting pictures into discussions. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 18:36, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
That way, it might not work. On one side, everyone wants to put in their thoughts and make their suggestions, so we'll have that problem again. On the other side, people won't think it's fair if only one person decides all of the pictures... I might be wrong, so make inputs!! Friedbeef1 Ho ho ho! 18:37, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
This is why people like myself, Squallinoa, and others would run it, possibly trading off the picture selection. So there wouldn't be suggestions. Miles (talk) 18:38, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
And just to head off this fight before it begins again, no one runs a page. Every editor can edit every page with very few exceptions. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 17:26, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for referencing my name for this fad, C. Hawk =) But can we plz have this? It's very entertaining and fun. Koopa Koopersshell.gif Klaus 18:52, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

What if we put them on sub-pages? I'm Alex25, King of Randomness! Say Hi to me! Random stuff! 18:52, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

That'll be worse: One page for pictoquotes, multiple pages for archives... as if we need anymore subpages... Friedbeef1 Ho ho ho! 18:57, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
Sub-pages is an absolute no. There have been way to many meaningless subpages already. As for it being "fun," go have that fun somewhere else as it is not what this wiki is for. I don't mean to sound cold here, but it really isn't fun for me and some of the other users to have to navigate the recent changes (or the talk pages should we need to use them) just to get around these. As I've said so many times, this isn't a social networking site, its an encyclopedia. Go get AIM, or hotmail, or facebook, or whatever. They are all free, and you can do what you want with them. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 18:58, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

How about Cd-i wiki? I'm Alex25, King of Randomness! Say Hi to me! Random stuff! 22:34, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Well, it's irrelevant to Cd-i, so no. Although I'm sure that the other administrators there (besides me) wouldn't care. As for a solution, how about forced minor-changes? Like every time a Picquote contribution is made, it must be checked as a "minor edit," as to stop the flooding of the recent changes. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 22:43, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Um... what's a pictoquote? METEORITE (t) 23:05, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

I think the SA idea would be the best to eliminate the clutter: All users would stop and take down these things from their userpages (including myself). The SA official one would remain in the Forum namespace and not on userpages. Anyone agree? Miles (talk) 23:47, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

I go for no Pictoquotes. There is no point in them, and unlike SA, will wear out soon enough. Friedbeef1 Ho ho ho! 23:52, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
It seems to me that their explosive popularity isn't going down anytime soon, and this would be a controlled way to organize it. Miles (talk) 23:57, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
I support CH's original proposal. It seems like that after 5-10 Pictoquotes, people run out of good ideas and come up with corny phrases that are not funny. We should just ax this. Friedbeef1 Ho ho ho! 00:09, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

I won't endorse moving something to another wiki considering that I consider it not appropriate to any wiki. If the Cd-i doesn't have a problem, fine, but don't tell them that a sysop on another wiki told you to go there. As for the SA, I don't get how that would solve the problem. The SA generates too much useless activity already. On the topic of minor edits, it doesn't address the problem of the space these things take up, nor does it accurately address the recent changes flood. It's important to check both kinds of edits, as not all minor edits are useless. If we didn't check minor edits, we would open the door to massive vandalism. I'm not sure why we keep having to have these discussions about keeping Smash Wiki from becoming a social networking site. I've shown people many options to continue this off of the wiki. There is no need for it to be here, and every need for it not to be. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 04:32, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Well, that as my idea. As mentioned earlier, I, as a sysop at the Cd-i wiki, don't approve of the picquotes going to Cd-i wiki (unless they're relevant pictures). Is there a policy that may suggest the usage of userpages that is appropriate? Cheezperson {talk}stuff 04:47, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Give me a day or two and I can come up with one. --Shadowcrest 15:20, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Create a Picto quote wiki or a wiki for user stuff? I'm Alex25, King of Randomness! Say Hi to me! Random stuff! 16:47, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

You can make whatever wiki you want and do whatever you want with it. Just stop doing it here. End of story. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 20:54, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Can you really make a pictoquote wiki? That's kinda sad. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 23:27, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Um, Cheez? Have you seen the images on CD-i Wiki? I'm a sysop there, too, and I didn't know that until a week or two ago. MarioGalaxy A Galaxy begins anew... 23:32, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, Cheez, but I'm co-founder of CD-i wiki, and we can do whatever we darn-well please there. Koopa Claus Happy Holidays 23:32, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
I know. I just said that I didn't approve. Majority rules, I guess. But I wanted a pictoquote wiki! Cheezperson {talk}stuff 23:43, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Vote[edit]

Let's just take a concensus, and leave all the talk behind. Just write a good reason following your reasoning and sign your name under the headline in which you agree in. Please refrain from making stupid votes, thanks. Friedbeef1 Ho ho ho! 23:34, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Polling != concensus --Shadowcrest 23:36, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
A vote on this isn't important, nor would it be binding. These violate policy and the purpose of the wiki, therefore, they must go. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 23:39, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
This is just to see where the users stand on this, because from the discussion above, you really couldn't tell where they stand on this. Friedbeef1 Ho ho ho! 23:41, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Where do you think the users stand on this? It's fairly obvious where everybody stands based on what's been said already. Shadowcrest is making a userpage policy (a lot like Guild Wars wiki's if you wanna check), so just be patient. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 23:57, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Again, this whole vote section is irrelevant. This forum wasn't created to get a gauge of how people feel about them, but to let people know they are against policy. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 15:58, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Yes, keep them[edit]

  • I vote "Yes" to keep them, but with regulations. Three on a talk page and five on a user page. Sound fair? - GalaxiaD (Happy Holidays!) 00:54, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
Not at all. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 02:16, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
Why not? - GalaxiaD (Happy Holidays!) 23:03, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
  • I have one, but that's not the reason. The reason is that Pictoquotes are NOT vandiliasm in ANY way. They're harmless fun. But people should mark them Minor Edits. Masterman Happy Holidays!! 02:34, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
Not being vandalism doesn't mean they are legitimate content. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 03:54, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
But they're on user pages not the mainspace. Masterman Happy Holidays!! 20:43, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
User pages are part of this wiki, not a peoples personal corner of the internet to do whatever they want with. We allow a large degree of freedom with these. The problem here is that they not only aren't topical to this wiki, but they also generate way too much meaningless wasted server space. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 22:15, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
That's why they should mark it MINOR EDIT. Masterman Happy Holidays!! 22:27, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
Read above; that's irrelevant. All the minor edit is is a way of marking it. It takes up the same server space. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 22:51, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
  • Keep with the requirement they be kept in the forums, preferably under the Smash Arena or some other organized system. Miles (talk) 20:53, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
  • Don't userboxes take up space? I suppose you wanna ax them too now, seeing as almost everyone has them? And besides, the site doesn't have to load the picquote on every page, only on my, Sapphire Kirby's etc's userpages. Ike's Best BuddyMerry! Christmas!! 12:47, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Constant pointless edits slow down the whole system. Try editing when five other people are clogging up server space with this. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 17:24, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
You have Userboxes, and as far as I know you don't want those things axed. The take up server space... Ike's Best BuddyMerry! Christmas!!

No, ax them[edit]

  • Distort pages, useless/no point to them, clutters up user pages, and has nothing to do with Smash or Smashwiki in general, except that the images are from the Smash Bros series. Friedbeef1 Ho ho ho! 23:40, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Hypocritical much? Koopa Claus Happy Holidays 23:55, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Couldn't care less or Neutral[edit]
