Hello users of SmashWiki, I decided to host an online tournament of Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wiki. Any user may participate in this tournament, regardless of their activity on this Wiki. If you plan on participating in this tournament, simply put your name and friend code in the friend code list.

The links to the IRC channel can be found here. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 06:17, 17 August 2011 (EDT)

Date and Time[edit]

Matches for the tournament will begin Saturday September 24th. The time frame will be decided then.

Tournament format[edit]

The tournament's format is dependent upon the amount of participants in the tournament:

  • 12 or less participants, and it will be a round robin format. Each player's score will be determined by the number of individual games they manage to win. In the event of a tie, placings will give priority to sets won, then the number of games lost, and then the tied players' performance against higher placing players.
  • 13 to 24 participants, and it will be a modified round robin format, where participants will be split into two groups, and the leader of each group will face off in a final set at the end of the tournament to determine the winner.
  • More than 24 participants, and it will be a standard double elimination format.

For how the tournament will be run; after the participants have signed up, they will be paired up with their opponent, who they will then have a period of time to meet in IRC to play out their set. After each set is completed, report the result of each individual game in the results section, as well as the characters used.

Ruleset[edit]

The following will be the ruleset for the tournament, with the stage list at the bottom. I highly recommend keeping a tab opened on this section during the tournament, to have the ruleset in quick reach to check with if necessary.

Match rules[edit]

  • 3 stock.
  • 8 minutes.
  • Items are turned to off and none.
  • If time runs out, the winner is determined by stock.
  • If stock are identical, or a game ends with both players being KO'd simultaneously, then a tiebreaker is played. A tiebreaker is a 1 stock, 3 minute match with the same characters and the same stage. Sudden death ingame is ignored and will not be used to determine the winner of the game.
  • Matches will be best out of 3 games. Winner's finals, loser's finals, and the championship matches are best out of 5.
  • If a match is started without the correct rules, it must be exited out of immediately. The proper rules must then be set, and the game in progress must be replayed on the same stage with both players using the same characters.

Additional game rules[edit]

Additional rules for individual games. If your opponent breaks a rule, it will result in an automatic loss for them of the game in progress, but it is up to you to report them.

  • All people are responsible for their own control scheme/name tag and must make sure it is set before the match begins. Both players must agree to restart a match on account of a controller problem.
  • Extending Meta Knight's Dimensional Cape is banned.
  • Stalling is banned. (Stalling is defined as any action that deliberately avoids all conflict as to make the game unplayable. Running from an opponent to get to a better position is not considered stalling, but using chain throws infinitely against a wall beyond 200%, scrooging, or using Sonic's Homing Attack repeatedly underneath the stage is.)
  • Any action that prevents the game from continuing results in a forfeiture of the match for the offender.
  • Some interactions (for example, interrupting a throw with a wind attack) can cause one character to become frozen until being hit. If this happens, the free character is expected to capitalize on this in a timely manner; a failure to do so is considered stalling.
  • When using Dedede's down throw to chain throw, you must regrab via dash grab, unless an obstruction on the stage such as a wall would allow you to regrab without dash grabbing.
  • A DQ rule is in effect. Once your match is announced, you'll have a period of time you are expected to complete it with your opponent. If your opponent fails to meet you to play your set in the IRC during this time frame for whatever reason, they'll be disqualified, and charged with a 0-2 loss for the set. If both players fail to make an attempt to meet each other in the IRC during this time frame, both players will be charged with a 0-2 loss.

Match procedure[edit]

  • The gentlemen rule is in effect. During any game of any set, any stage can be played on as long as both players agree to it. If such an agreement is attempted but fails, follow the usual stage picking procedure below.

The following is the procedure for which a match is carried out.

  1. Players start a stage striking procedure from the list of starter stages in order to select the first stage. The following is the order in which it will be carried out, where "1" is player 1 and "2" is player 2; 1-1-2-2-2-1
  2. The first game is played using the stage chosen by step 1.
  3. The winner of the previous game chooses two stages to ban from the list of available stages for the next game.
  4. The loser of the previous game chooses the stage to be played from the list of available stages.
  5. The winner of the previous game announces the character they are using for the next game.
  6. The loser of the previous game decides who hosts.
  7. The next game is played using the stage chosen by step 4.
  8. Steps 3-7 are repeated until the necessary amount of games have been played.

Additionally, if the winning player does not play the character they announced they would be using, exit out of that game immediately.

  • The game will still be played on the same stage.
  • The winner from the previous game is now locked into their character.
  • The loser from the previous game however may reselect their character.
  • If the winner from the previous game chooses a different character from the one they are locked on to, it will be considered a forfeit by the winning player of the game in progress.

Stage list[edit]

Starter stages[edit]

The following is the stage list for the tournament. The list of starter stages consist of:

Counterpick stages[edit]

The following are available counterpick stages for the tournament. Any stage that is not among the starter list or among the counterpick stages is banned.

IRC conduct rules and reporting your results to the host[edit]

  • Use private chat to communicate with your opponent, and not the main chatroom. However, pinging your opponent in the main chatroom if they are not responding to your private chat query is acceptable.
  • Present the results of the set to the appropriate section below.
  • If reporting your opponent for misconduct during your matches, contact the host through private chat.
  • If you have a question to ask, you can either use the main chatroom or private chat with the host.
  • All IRC rules will still apply.

Any questions, suggestions, and comments about the tournament are posted here. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 06:17, 17 August 2011 (EDT)

Rules are great, though are you sure Brinstar should be counterpick? Mr. Anon (talk) 13:28, 17 August 2011 (EDT)
Nothing really too bad about Brinstar other than MK's dominance there (I don't want to make the stagelist too conservative), and with your choice of two stage bans, you could always use a ban on it, and still have one left for another stage of your choice. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 00:54, 18 August 2011 (EDT)
Fair enough. Mr. Anon (talk) 15:58, 18 August 2011 (EDT)
Why is it held in midnight (for me)? Will there be a SW tournament in which I am able to "show my awesome Wolf skillz"? :P--PSIWolf (TCE) 14:59, 20 August 2011 (EDT)
It's impossible to set up an online tourney that accommodates to people from all time zones. As such, the tourney's schedule is set up based on accommodating to those in the US (where the majority of the potential participants will come from, as well as being the location of the host). Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 14:09, 21 August 2011 (EDT)

Uhh can you tell me the GMT instead of sayinf North european and stuff? I don understand>_>Lucas-IV- OH MY PORK!Lucas alive.PNG 12:05, 21 August 2011 (EDT)

Could the tournament be slightly earlier? I'm at optimal availability during the moring in Pacific Coast time. Perhaps 2:00 PM West Coast Time? Mr. Anon (talk) 12:41, 22 August 2011 (EDT)
If more people request it. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 12:43, 22 August 2011 (EDT)
ah, but that'll make me wales uo at 4? You know what, why not those who wanna join tell their timezone and what hour in a day they can brawk so we can easily negotiate the time?>_>Lucas-IV- OH MY PORK!Lucas alive.PNG 18:41, 22 August 2011 (EDT)
Unless I get considerable demand to change the time, I'm keeping it as is. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 05:27, 23 August 2011 (EDT)

On my Wii I can't connect to the Internet and in that way I can't get a friend code. The network I have is TalkTalk and it's really confusing. Sorry to people who are intrested in battling me! Plus, we're only having it until 2012. Looking foward to it! --Heptowak(talk)Heptowak.png Click My Picture! 09:03, 23 August 2011 (EDT)

My brother also wishes to join. Would others be OK with Wii sharing? Mr. Anon (talk) 11:46, 25 August 2011 (EDT)

Tournament will be started in one hour. If too few people show up, it'll be postponed/cancelled. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 18:01, 25 August 2011 (EDT)

Due to few participants, the tournament is postponed. Users may suggest a suitable date/time here. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 19:22, 25 August 2011 (EDT)

The tournament has been rescheduled. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 05:32, 6 September 2011 (EDT)

The tournament will begin shortly, if enough people are there. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 15:53, 17 September 2011 (EDT)

Well, we're going through with Dodo's suggestion. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 18:58, 18 September 2011 (EDT)

Would anybody like to do their matches with me right now? Mr. Anon (talk) 13:02, 19 September 2011 (EDT)

No matches may be played out til the deadline I have posted is reach. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 13:06, 19 September 2011 (EDT)

One day remains, if you haven't already, sign up now. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 10:24, 23 September 2011 (EDT)

Last day for sign ups. Remember that your matches will be played out over time, so if you're not available today, you can still sign up. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 12:41, 24 September 2011 (EDT)

Well, I'm cancelling the tournament. Even with Dodo's tournament style implemented to accommodate for time zones and other issues of not being able to be in a chatroom at a specific time, there is not enough interest. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 01:11, 25 September 2011 (EDT)

Tournament proposal[edit]

Due to the tournament being cancelled/postponed i'm suggesting another way we go about this tourney, this new way will go over a week or a few days so all the competitors are able to battle at their free times, it will also let some other competitors join that are in different time zones. Unfortunately there is always disadvantages to an idea and for this one it is the time, the time for a tourney in this way could bore some people, or it could lead to disorganisation with the attending times, so try and deal with that best as possible, when a pair decide on a time to brawl (whenever it is) they are to abide by their word and be online at that time of the tourney. I'm sure there would be some other advantages and disadvantages that i've missed so feel free to state them if you would like to.

This is how i would like the set up of the tourney to be like, it would change with every brawl, every brawl's set time and if a user decides to pull out. the chart may be subject to change (if this passes) due to the format of the tourney (round robin or elimintation) or if someone finds a better way to present it or a better chart.

  • Note, the top row is always the one the adjacent word will be directed to (if win/lose is under entrant two, than entrant two was the one who won/lost).
  • Note, the dates will always be written in GMT0 times, there will be a link to a GMT time teller that will help others understand.
  • Note, dates do not have to be written, if someone decides they want to compete ASAP they may, then tell the results to someone or place it into the chart.
Competitor Entrant one Entrant two Entrant three Entrant four Entrant five
Entrant one X Win
Entrant two Lost X
Entrant three X Won
Entrant four Lost X 22 September 12:00am GMT0
Entrant five 22 September 12:00am GMT0 X

I would like a vote on this, please vote wether you would like this tourney to be done in this way or just add a comment if you would like something to be modified.--Shaun's Wiji Dodo talk Untitled-1 copy.gif 20:09, 25 August 2011 (EDT)

Hell yeah![edit]

I approve. Zeldasmash (talk) 21:28, 25 August 2011 (EDT)

Sure, but it may take about a week for my wii to be fixed. Mr. Anon (talk) 22:15, 25 August 2011 (EDT)

No way[edit]

Comments[edit]

Just do it on a weekend more people might join. Blindcolours Ganbarimasu! 20:12, 25 August 2011 (EDT)

Irene's coming this weekend >_>. HavocReaper 22:04, 25 August 2011 (EDT)

When it hits you, you'll be on the edge of a level 1 hurricane. Is it going to hurt that much? Besides, it won't reach you til' Sunday. I'd rather this tournament be on a Saturday.-Ivy73002MS.png 22:17, 25 August 2011 (EDT)

The tournament is at least postponed a week, so no worries there. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 22:45, 25 August 2011 (EDT)

I will not be hosting the tournament in this format. I would rather get this done in a day, then spread it out over a week or more. Plus, with this format, one person not being able to play their match for whatever reason can cause a huge delay of over a day or more, or force me to DQ them when they wouldn't be in a standard format.
