Forum:Shovel Knight's chances?

Forums: Index Smash 4 Talk Shovel Knight's chances?

Aside from the Fighter Ballot, as pretty much everyone aside from Assist Trophies has a chance via that.

One thing I noted is that, although the leaked Amiibo isn't shown to be in the Smash Bros. series, the box art in the image GAME tweeted doesn't match the Amiibo pose, something I believe would be a first time case, so it could be a placeholder for an unrevealed Smash render. Another argument in favor is Nintendo's attempts at improving their relationship with independent game devs. Playable Shovel Knight would be a huge help in that.

On the other hand, Shovel Knight (the game) still hasn't been released in Japan, and every Smash Bros. character has made an appearance there. Also, we already have four 3rd-party characters, so Shovel Knight could be overkill. Thoughts? Nyargleblargle (Talk) 16:26, 27 August 2015 (EDT)

While I personally would love to see Shovel Knight playable, I think it's a bit of a stretch at the moment. It's worth noting that the boxart for the amiibo in the GAME tweet uses existing official art, although I guess that doesn't prove much. Some are taking the apparent news of a Shovel Knight amiibo existing (even assuming it isn't Smash-related) as evidence of Nintendo of Japan potentially publishing the game there. Nintendo does do such things for Western-developed games sometimes. It's a lot of speculation though. We'll see what news comes out tonight. Miles (talk) 16:45, 27 August 2015 (EDT)
So Shovel Knight wasn't shown tonight in Smash, but did anyone notice how they avoided showing the base of the amiibo? The Smash logo would have been a dead giveaway...or it just might be that the base's design isn't finalized yet. Nyargleblargle (Talk) 06:36, 28 August 2015 (EDT)
I'd just like to point out that Shovel Knight wouldn't be the first character created outside of Japan. That being said, I'd personally dig it (*ba dum tss*) if Shovel Knight came in, but I'd be really excited if someone else got in... Changing the head icon used. You mean this base? 81.152.69.104 07:11, 28 August 2015 (EDT)
*looks closely* Is that...? Changing the head icon used. No biggie.Aidan, Master of Speed and AuraPer Request, for User:Aidanzapunk. 07:12, 28 August 2015 (EDT)
And I noticed the trailer thumbnail showed a gold base (though I couldn't make out the pattern). What is happening? Nyargleblargle (Talk) 08:01, 28 August 2015 (EDT)
It could simply be a placeholder since Smash amiibo are the most common type out there. That said, I believe the Unseen64 guy was still claiming to have insider info about Shovel Knight in Smash, so it's still possible... I'm not getting my hopes up, but I still think it would be cool. (Reset indent) Hey Nyargle, I think this is what you're referring to. Changing the head icon used. No biggie.Aidan, Master of Speed and AuraPer Request, for User:Aidanzapunk. 21:04, 28 August 2015 (EDT)

I just want to say that first off, I'm not against Shovel Knight in any way. With that said, I don't think he's at all deserving, he's appeared in one game that's been out for a year and hasn't even been released in Japan yet. In fact, Shantae and Quote have both appeared in Japan and are at least decently known there, Shantae apparently had a cameo in Warioware once, and Quote was actually created in Japan, in addition, both have had multiple games mainly on Nintendo consoles, however, Shovel Knight's console exclusivity was withdrawn in favor of PS4 and XBONE ports. Not to mention, whereas Shovel Knight's creators simply just told people to go vote for him, Shantae's creators gave ideas for alts, and Qutoe's creator has a fully functioning model for the game. Not to mention, with consideration of the other guest character's numbers in sales, Shovel Knight is not up there. He'd also be a questionable choice financially, as if he really is that obscure, he might not sell as well as intended. Not to mention, I believe that there are other guest characters that take priority over him, so his inclusion would be very strange indeed. Not sure what he has that would make him a "Special Case". Nintenzilla (talk) 09:26, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
Shovel Knight sold really well, and critics did like it. I'd consider him plausible, to say the least. It's not like he isn't popular. Changing the head icon used. No biggie.Aidan, Master of Speed and AuraPer Request, for User:Aidanzapunk. 09:34, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
But why would Sakurai include a character that he probably isn't even aware of existing (Not saying it's true, but you get what I mean). Also I forgot, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is getting a physical release in Japan. Nintenzilla (talk) 09:37, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
Also, the Ballot isn't a popularity poll, something people don't seem to realize, it's more of a suggestion box going off of the way they advertised it. I suppose number of votes is a factor, but not everything like people make it out to be. Nintenzilla (talk) 09:45, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
I can understand that first point. But hey, obscure characters aren't a first for Smash Bros.
As for the second point, Sakurai outright stated DLC would be fanservice at this point. Changing the head icon used. No biggie.Aidan, Master of Speed and AuraPer Request, for User:Aidanzapunk. 09:48, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
That's a bit different, those are all first party Nintendo characters, as for the second point, while that is true that he stated that, what I meant was that popularity isn't everything, what I mean is that there is no ballot "Winner", what they'll do is take the character into consideration and possibly make them a character. However, I believe popularity is a deciding factor on choosing a character. Nintenzilla (talk) 09:53, 27 October 2015 (EDT)

(Reset indent) One, Shulk is second party (created by Monolith, who is owned by Nintendo). Two, I can definitely see popularity being a determining factor, as the more votes that pop up for someone like, for instance, Professor Hershel Layton, the more consideration Sakurai would put into him. I definately see Prof. Layton as one of the more likely characters in Smash Bros as DLC due to how close his company is with Nintendo and multiple other things, I don't see why Shovel Knight is at all deserving. There are things that help his case however, he's had alot of crossovers with other franchises, I believe over 30 franchises. Another thing is a rumor that Nintendo may be publishing his game in Japan, so that would help his case as a way of promoting a new franchise ala Roy from Fire Emblem (Although he was from a pre-established franchise unlike Butt-Butt). But still, I don't think that this is saying much, unlike other indies, he hasn't appeared in Japan before and is thus relitively obscure, one thing that Nintendo would have to take into consideration is sales and due to his obsucurity he may be hard to market in that region. Nintenzilla (talk) 11:07, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
The thing that worries me a little is Nintendo's current focus on a different Level 5 series, but Layton is, by far, the more successful franchise. Changing the head icon used. No biggie.Aidan, Master of Speed and AuraPer Request, for User:Aidanzapunk. 11:12, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
Jibanyan? Yo-Kai Watch is still very new, I think that they should wait before adding Jibanyan all of a sudden. Nintenzilla (talk) 11:15, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
Then again, it's at least a pre-established franchise. Nintenzilla (talk) 11:22, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
And, if you look at Nintendo's tweet history, there's been a lot of talk about Yo-Kai Watch... Changing the head icon used. No biggie.Aidan, Master of Speed and AuraPer Request, for User:Aidanzapunk. 11:24, 27 October 2015 (EDT)

And Jibanyan is also a character on the Play Nintendo site Nintenzilla (talk) 11:29, 27 October 2015 (EDT)

So I don't think SK should be in the game yet, I think it's just to early for him. Plus, there's Shantae. Nintenzilla (talk) 14:00, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
Honestly, I really don't like the idea of SK being in Smash. I was never interested in his game, and I honestly feel there are much more deserving indie game characters for Smash. *cough*Quote from Cave Story*cough* Disaster Flare (talk) 14:04, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
Quote definately makes the most sense, however as a friend of mine on Smashboards pointed out, his series is in purgatory, not ever getting a new installment. Nintenzilla (talk) 14:09, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
May I point out this fabulous duo? Wouldn't be the first time Sakurai has took a character from a series in purgatory and putting them in Smash. Disaster Flare (talk) 14:11, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
They are first-party Nintendo characters, Quote is indie. Nintenzilla (talk) 14:13, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
Off topic, but should INoMed be in Smash bros.? (THIS IS A JOKE) INoMedssig.png INoMed (Talk • Contribs) 14:14, 27 October 2015 (EDT)

But another thing that hurts Shovel Knight for Smash is that YGC is considering withdrawing the exclusive Amiibo content on Nintendo consoles and putting it on the other platforms. Nintenzilla (talk) 14:20, 27 October 2015 (EDT)

Personally, I think out of all the indie characters, Shantae is the most deserving, she's basically "The" indie character and is probably one of the most popular Smash Ballot candidates, and for good reason too. Nintenzilla (talk) 14:28, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
