On this wiki, we always place the year before the title on MPGR/SSBMRank articles. However, generally speaking, MPGR and SSBMRanks have been referred to on non-wiki articles, Twitter, reddit, and Smashboards, with the year after the title. So for example, MPGR 2019 instead of 2019 MPGR or SSBMRank 2015 instead of 2015 SSBMRank. Looking through the history of the rankings, I initially thought placing the year before the title was a carry over from 2013 SSBMRank, but even then that ranking was officially referred to as "SSBM 2013 Rank" or simply "SSBMRank". The only rankings that do officially place the year before the title are the Summer MPGRs, but even then this is inconsistent as they are referred also referred to MPGR Summer <year> too. I imagine it's merely interchangeable.

That said, I'd like to propose that we officially change the naming scheme from <year> SSBMRank/MPGR to SSBMRank/MPGR <year>. There's no real reason to use the former since it's unofficial, or at best, interchangeable such as in the Summer PRs. One might argue that we could simply go by their official titles, but this would cause a multitude of strange renames such as "SSBM 2013 Rank" for 2013 SSBMRank, "SSBM Rank Top 25" for Summer 2014 SSBMRank.

We should also apply this to SSBBRank as SSBBRank <year> seems to be the official naming scheme beginning with the 2016-2017 season. The 2014 season was seemingly retroactively given the unofficial title of 2014 SSBBRank. In terms of feasibility, PorpleBot has recently demonstrated that mass text replacement is indeed possible so I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to enact this change. 3. I think we should have the year AFTER MPGR (ex. MPGR 2019) instead of before (ex. 2019 MPGR). Having the year BEFORE MPGR has only been done once, for 2013 SSBMRank, as listed on the MIOM website (the official publisher of that ranking), while from that point onward, the year has always been placed after MPGR by their official publishers (RedBull and MIOM). When it comes to the Summer MPGR, there are inconsistencies with its naming:

  • MPGR Summer 2017
  • Summer MPGR 2018
  • Summer 2019 MPGR [X] (year before, should be consistent w/ the full year rankings)

The last two have summer before the year, so it has the majority, so I think the naming version that would have the most consistency, between both the summer and full year rankings, would be "Summer MPGR Year".

However, despite all of this, I am actually more used to year before mpgr purely because--that's just how it's written on the wiki and how it has been for a long time (although that's not really relevant), as well as I think that 2019 MPGR sounds better than MPGR 2019 (subjective), but I think that having the year after is the more "correct" and consistent version. Idk about brawl and other rankings, but I at least believe that this naming scheme would be more consistent; year has been placed after MPGR ever since the 2013 ranking, which is the only instance of the year being placed before. Summer rankings should be "summer mpgr year" because summer has been placed in front for most of the rankings; the year should come after to stay consistent w/ the full year rankings.

sorry for the essay, i just REALLY care about the minute difference in the naming scheme for the ranking of a twenty year old game 🙂

tl;dr it should be "MPGR Year", as this is the most common way it has been written, and it should be "Summer MPGR Year", a combination of all the summer rankings into one to create the most consistent version they have been written, as well as to be consistent with the full year rankings Flarco (talk) 12:19, January 18, 2022 (EST)
