Hi. I got Melee a couple weeks ago, and I'm still practicing. I'm pretty good at Brawl, but I'm not very good at Melee. Perhaps a pro at the game could help me out. There's a couple things I need tips for. My mains are Kirby, Ness, Mewtwo, Captain Falcon, and Link. Mr. Anon (talk) 21:04, June 20, 2010 (UTC)

First tip: if you're looking to play top level, don't pick your main just yet. Get a feel for the advanced techniques and the physics of the game, then try out different characters. I was maining Young Link until I learned the more advanced move, then realized Marth was better for me. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 22:27, June 20, 2010 (UTC)

Combos[edit]

What are some good combos I can do with my mains? I've never been good at comboing, but I thought in Melee it's easier to combo than in Brawl. But I find things to be to the contarary. Mr. Anon (talk) 21:04, June 20, 2010 (UTC)

L canceling[edit]

I know how to L-Cancel, but what are the benefits? Most characters' aerials don't have much lag, and how do I know if I have L cancelled? Mr. Anon (talk) 21:04, June 20, 2010 (UTC)

When you L-Cancel, your landing lag will be reduced approximately by half. To know if you have, simply go to training mode and look at the landing lag of Link's dair. After seeing how much landing lag it has, try L-Cancelling the dair. If done correctly, you will clearly see the difference. The benefits of L-Cancelling are very important, as it allows you to play at a faster speed. Many combos are only possible through L-Cancelling. Ganondorf would have to be the character who benefits from L-Cancelling the most, as it allows him to abuse his very powerful aerials without having to worry about their high landing lag. Wavedashing[edit]

I can wavedash with some effort, but it's hard for me to wavedash multiple times. Furthermore, in training mode, the easiest place to wavedash, I can wavedash by slowing down the speed, but since the C-Stick does not work there, I can't wavesmash or do anything. How should I practice? Mr. Anon (talk) 21:04, June 20, 2010 (UTC)

Short hopping[edit]

Perhaps the hardest technique for me to do. How do you short hop with ease? Even when I do short hop, I miss my oppurtunity to SHFFL. Mr. Anon (talk) 21:04, June 20, 2010 (UTC)

The best way to learn to short hop is to practice hitting the X button on the very edge. If done right, your finger will slip off the side of the button as you hit it and you will short hop. Memorize the position of this versus a normal jump and you will get there eventually. Clarinet Hawk (talk · contributions) 22:29, June 20, 2010 (UTC)
