Donkey KongEdit

    •   Mario and Donkey Kong, the characters who starred in this game, appear as playable fighters.
    •   Mario's down taunt is a reference to his dying animation in this game.
    •   Donkey Kong's red costume is a reference to his original sprite from this game.
    •   Mario's blue costume is based on his original sprite from this game up to Brawl.
    •   Wario's red and blue costume is based on Mario's original sprite from this game in Brawl onward.
    •   Peach's red costume in Brawl onward is based on Pauline's dress from the cover.
    •   Mario's cap appears as a headgear for all Mii Fighter types in Smash 4 and Ultimate.

    •   Diddy Kong's Final Smash, Rocketbarrel Barrage, also came from this game.
    •   Konga Beat is Donkey Kong's Final Smash, which is similar to if not the same as Donkey Kong's musical attack from Donkey Kong 64 (Bongo Blast).
    •   Donkey Kong's forward aerial originates from this game.
    •   King K. Rool uses boxing gloves for his forward smash, one of his methods of attack in this game.
    •   King K. Rool fires the Blast-O-Matic on DK Island for his Final Smash, mimicking this game's "Game Over" sequence.
