Bayonetta (ベヨネッタ, Bayonetta) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. She was confirmed as a playable character on June 12th, 2018. Bayonetta is classified as fighter #63.

Bayonetta is once again voiced by Hellena Taylor in the English version, using recycled voice clips from Super Smash Bros. 4.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4

Aesthetics

  • Change As with all veterans returning from SSB4, Bayonetta's model features a more subdued color scheme.
  • Change Love is Blue and Scarborough Fair have louder sound effects to distinguish the two.
  • Change Bayonetta's taunts are sped up.
  • Change When the victory screen shows her name, Bayonetta's glasses glint at the edge. While this was present in her victory poses in Smash 4, it only showed for a brief moment.

Attributes

  • Buff Like all characters, Bayonetta's jumpsquat animation now takes three frames to complete (down from 4).
  • Buff Bayonetta dashes much faster.
  • Buff Bayonetta's bullet arts can now be angled slightly upwards or downwards, depending on the move.
  • Nerf Bayonetta is slightly lighter, now being closer to Zero Suit Samus.

Ground attacks

  • Buff Jab combo connects more reliably.
    • Nerf Jab 1 has less range.
  • Nerf Bayonetta's tilts all have less range.
    • Buff Up tilt's grounded hitbox launches opponents at an angle similar to the aerial hitbox, which improves its combo potential.
    • Nerf Down tilt has slightly more endlag.
  • Buff Forward smash can now be angled.

Aerial Attacks

  • Nerf Held neutral aerial and up aerial have increased landing lag.
  • Buff Forward aerial has less landing lag.
    • Buff All hits of forward aerial have increased damage.
    • Nerf Forward aerial doesn't bounce off of opponents anymore. This means that the first hit of it can no longer combo into After Burner Kick or Witch Twist at low to medium percents.
  • Buff Both back aerial and up aerial have less landing lag.
    • Nerf Back aerial has more ending lag.
    • Change Up aerial deals less damage and its knockback has been reduced substantially. This improves its combo potential but hinders its KO ability.
  • Nerf Down aerial's knockback appears to have been lowered.
    • Nerf Down aerial has more landing lag.

Throws/other attacks

  • Change Bayonetta's hand now grabs characters using a form of Umbran magic, as seen via a slightly updated animation where she swings her hand around, which is sparkling with a noticeable Umbran purple.

Special moves

  • Bullet Climax:
    • Nerf Bullet Climax now needs to be fully charged before it can be shield-cancelled.
    • Nerf Bullet Climax takes slightly longer to fully charge.[1]
  • Heel Slide / After Burner Kick:
    • Nerf Heel Slide's second hit can't be used if the first hit was blocked by a shield.
    • Nerf If an After Burner Kick collides with a shield, Bayonetta is unable to use another one.
    • Nerf Downwards After Burner Kick can no longer be autocancelled.
    • Buff Downwards After Burner Kick now launches at an upward angle, which, improves its combo ability.[2]
  • Witch Twist:
    • Nerf Witch Twist has increased startup lag.
    • Nerf Witch Twist can no longer grab the ledge until the move ends or with proper spacing.
  • Witch Time:
    • Nerf Witch Time no longer grants intangibility when used.
    • Nerf Witch Time's effect duration has been significantly lowered.
    • Nerf Witch Time has increased startup and endlag.
    • Change The screen turns dark whenever someone is affected by Witch Time.
    • Change Witch Time scales with the power of the move it is used on, so using Witch Time on a weaker move such as a jab will result in the effect lasting a much shorter time, or a stronger move such as a smash attack resulting in a longer effect.

Role in World of Light

Bayonetta was among the fighters summoned to the cliffside to fight against the army of Master Hands.

Bayonetta was present when Galeem unleashed its beams of light. Bayonetta dodged a beam of light, activating her Bat Within, but she was then vaporized immediately after she reformed her body, and transformed into a spirit alongside the rest of the fighters, excluding Kirby.

  • Bayonetta's official artwork strongly resembles her official artwork for Bayonetta 2, with her arms pointed outwards rather than inwards.
    • Likewise, Bayonetta's official artwork based on the first game resembles her official artwork for Bayonetta, only mirrored.
  • In the E3 demo build of Ultimate, Bayonetta was able to use Afterburner Kick, Downwards Afterburner Kick, and then gain another Afterburner Kick before landing. [1]
