Razor Leaf (はっぱカッター, Leaf Cutter) is a move that appears in Brawl and Ultimate as Ivysaur's side special move. Ivysaur shoots a large, single leaf, which knocks opponents back significantly for a ranged move.

With this move, Ivysaur sends a leaf as a ranged attack, making between 5%-8% of damage. It may curve mildly in a random direction at the end of its reach. It is very useful for canceling others' attacks. This strategy is often used when recovering back on to the stage with Ivysaur, as its up special move is only a tether recovery (see Vine Whip) and a projectile must be used to clear edge-guarders and edge-hogs. Nonetheless, despite the leaf's long range, it will disappear after a short while and has a slight arc, so Ivysaur players must be in a decent position to the opponent before unleashing the move. Razor Leaf can actually be "Smash-thrown", like Samus's missiles, by tapping . This makes the leaf travel a bit faster, and about a character or two character lengths further, but the trajectory cannot be arced as effectively. Due to its high startup lag, low knockback, slow speed, and unpredictable trajectory, it is considered to be one of the worst projectiles in Brawl.
When this move is used, Ivysaur sends out a single large leaf as a projectile, which flies horizontally forward, and then disappears. The leaf's trajectory curves randomly by a moderate amount; for example, it may fly slightly downards mid-flight and upwards near its end.

The leaf damages for 5-8% with low knockback. Although the leaf can only hit a given target once, it does not disappear upon hitting a target, allowing it to pierce through and hit multiple targets.

The leaf can be flung farther by executing the move with a tap input of the control stick. This increases the distance to about twice as much as when the move is executed with a tilt input, and also increases the travel speed. The leaf's other properties, such as power, are the same regardless of input.

Razor Leaf (はっぱカッター, Leaf Cutter) is Ivysaur's side special move. Razor Leaf is also used by several non-playable Pokémon in the series.

Overview

Origin

Razor Leaf in Generation VI Pokémon games.

In the Pokémon series, Razor Leaf is a Physical (as of Generation IV) Grass-type attack introduced in Generation I, which consists of the Pokémon shooting a flurry of leaves at the opponent. While weak, it has an increased chance of dealing a critical hit, and it can hit all adjacent opponents in a double or triple battle. Ivysaur, as well as its evolutionary relatives, can learn this move by level-up in every generation of the Pokémon games.

Use by other Pokémon

 • Venusaur - When Venusaur appears on Saffron City, it shoots multiple Razor Leaves in one direction, racking up damage and causing moderate knockback.
 • Chikorita - Chikorita appears as a Poké Ball Pokémon in Melee and Brawl, where it uses Razor Leaf in similar fashion to Venusaur. Chikorita produces the leaves by shaking the leaf on its head. These leaves have minimal knockback, allowing for better damaging capability than Venusaur's. Despite the existence of the Grass hit effect in Brawl, these leaves use the Slash effect.
 • Snivy - Snivy appears as a Poké Ball Pokémon in Smash 4. Its Razor Leaf works similarly to Chikorita's, but the leaves are more spread out.
