Just for fun, in a friend group I decided to rate every special move in the series and say what I think of them, so I figured I might as well post the results here. Ratings are from 0 to 5 and generally mean the following:
*⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: My beloved, one of my favorites
*⭐⭐⭐⭐: Pretty good stuff
*⭐⭐⭐: I enjoy it a normal amount
*⭐⭐: Not a fan, or could be better
*⭐: This sucks
*🚮 (no stars): I'd rather have this gone or replaced altogether

The general criteria I used for these ratings was:
*How fun is the move to use in general?
*How well balanced and practical in competitive play is it, or otherwise, what unique value does it add to casual play?
*How creative and deserving of a special moveslot is it, instead of simply being a glorified normal attack or a clone of another special?
*How fitting is it for the character, be it in terms of source material references or what it adds to their kit?

Please just note that this list is subjective, and it's meant to be. Do not take my statements here as hard facts. There's also a fair amount of satire in some of these (which doesn't mean they're not serious, it's for fun).

|-
|{{CharHead|Mario|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Luigi|SSBU}}||Fireball||⭐⭐⭐||Simple but effective, no other neutral B would be more fitting imo. Out of the two I like Luigi's more, cool way to make it unique.
|-
|{{CharHead|Donkey Kong|SSBU}}||Giant Punch||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||Certified classic. Always fun to use and finish a combo with, and you can't just mindlessly charge it to full with no consequence: you must commit to it. May not be based on anything but who cares, it's a very DK move.
|-
|{{CharHead|Link|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssbm}} Bow<br>{{GameIcon|ssbb}}{{GameIcon|ssb4}} Hero's Bow<br>{{GameIcon|ssbu}} Bow and Arrows||⭐⭐⭐||Same comment as Fireballs, not much else to say. Would be higher if the arrow pickup was more practical, but it sucks unfortunately.
|-
|{{CharHead|Samus|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Dark Samus|SSBU}}||Charge Shot||⭐⭐||I'd love this more as a classic storable charge projectile, but it's not that interesting in concept (just an orb that grows big and a loose interpretation of the Metroid mechanic) and in Ult it's way too overtuned. Camps, starts combos, pressures shield, kills, and is way less committal compared to Giant Punch. It carries Samus so much in an arguably unhealthy way.
|-
|{{CharHead|Yoshi|SSBU}}||Egg Lay||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Pretty nice and kind of underrated command grab that is accurate to his games and involves more setup beyond just "grab to kill" or starting combos for free. It can just be a bit annoying if you're on the receiving end.
|-
|{{CharHead|Kirby|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssb}}{{GameIcon|ssbm}} Swallow<br>{{GameIcon|ssbb}}{{GameIcon|ssb4}}{{GameIcon|ssbu}} Inhale||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Not gonna rate the practicality of every copy ability or I'd be here all day, but yeah, literally no better choice. Would be 5 stars if the projectile spitback wasn't so awful compared to Dedede's.
|-
|{{CharHead|Fox|SSBU}}||Blaster||⭐⭐||A classic and not really much better choice for a character that already has a pretty good kit, but I never found it that fun or interesting in its current incarnation, it's a bunch of chip damage that feels worse than just getting in and racking up more damage with combos.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pikachu|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Pichu|SSBU}}||Thunder Jolt||⭐⭐⭐||Kind of overtuned and annoying, but I think it's a nice and unique enough projectile in concept even if it doesn't actually reference anything from Pokemon ("b-but it was mentioned once in the TCG" who cares)
|-
|{{CharHead|Ness|SSBU}}||PK Flash||⭐||Very meh and nearly useless move, too slow to do anything with and outclassed by the PK Thunder tackle as an all-out punish. You can definitely do better.
|-
|{{CharHead|Captain Falcon|SSBU}}||Falcon Punch||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||No disrespect to the real classics. Would be lower if it was the shitty nerfed for no reason Smash 4 version, but we're back.
|-
|{{CharHead|Jigglypuff|SSBU}}||Rollout||⭐||Can maybe do stuff in free-for-alls sometimes, but it's pretty much a deadweight move otherwise with really unnecessary handicaps (why does hitting it offstage cause the equivalent of helplessness?). Jigglypuff could definitely use at least one new special.
|-
|{{CharHead|Peach|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Daisy|SSBU}}||Toad||⭐||Filler move with boring filler function that accomplishes nothing for the actual character. Free Toad.
|-
|{{CharHead|Bowser|SSBU}}||Fire Breath||⭐⭐⭐||Love to use it as quick high damage against people bad at videogames and to cover the ledge (one of the only real onstage edgeguard tools post-Brawl), and it's nicely balanced by becoming smaller with longer use. Aside from that it's alright. He breathe.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ice Climbers|SSBU}}||Ice Shot||⭐⭐||Meh, it exists. You can also hit it back now and it hurts them which is lame.
|-
|{{CharHead|Sheik|SSBU}}||Needle Storm||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Now this is a storable charge projectile I really like, it rewards you more for following up on it (especially with the aerial version) and it's cool that more charge results in more needles instead of just a larger projectile.
|-
|{{CharHead|Zelda|SSBU}}||Nayru's Love||⭐⭐||A rather boring move that is used almost entirely as a disadvantage crutch with no other sauce, on a character that already tends to play boring and campy, and the spell in OoT is also rather forgettable.
|-
|{{CharHead|Dr. Mario|SSBU}}||Megavitamins||⭐⭐⭐⭐||I find little reason to play Dr. Mario over Mario, but these are quite more fun than Mario's Fireballs. Projectile that starts combos = dopamine. It'd be overtuned on actual Mario though.
|-
|{{CharHead|Falco|SSBU}}||Blaster||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Has always been saucier than Fox's lasers, but especially now that it's not overnerfed like in Smash 4. There are other lasers I like more though :3
|-
|{{CharHead|Marth|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Lucina|SSBU}}||Shield Breaker||⭐⭐||Always found this one kinda aged and boring actually. Shield damage isn't that special of a property and aside from that it's just a {{rollover|strong chargeable move|smash attack|y}}. And uhhh it does slightly more damage if it hits characters' heads which uhhhh yeah okay.
|-
|{{CharHead|Young Link|SSBU}}||Fire Arrow||⭐⭐⭐||Love that it's a combo starter but it's too braindead spammable for my liking, it should definitely have some more startup at least to better justify its on hit reward. Not like Yink doesn't have good mobility or other projectiles anyway.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ganondorf|SSBU}}||Warlock Punch||⭐⭐||Just Falcon Punch with way less sauce and on a character that'd benefit a lot more from having another actual special.
|-
|{{CharHead|Mewtwo|SSBU}}||Shadow Ball||⭐⭐⭐⭐||The cooler Charge Shot, actually a nice Pokemon reference, and it may also be overtuned but it makes more sense for Mewtwo's glass cannon build.
|-
|{{CharHead|Roy|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Chrom|SSBU}}||Flare Blade||⭐⭐||Same opinion as Shield Breaker, I don't think the full charge OHKO makes it any more interesting.
|-
|{{CharHead|Mr. Game & Watch|SSBU}}||Chef||⭐⭐⭐||Silly enough for a silly character and I like that you can actually control its trajectory now.
|-
|{{CharHead|Meta Knight|SSBU}}||Mach Tornado||⭐⭐||Much less fun now that it only hits once. Remember when people at launch panicked over a combo nobody actually ended up using?
|-
|{{CharHead|Pit|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssbb}} Palutena's Arrow<br>{{GameIcon|ssb4}}{{GameIcon|ssbu}} Palutena Bow||⭐⭐⭐||Definitely Pit's most unique and interesting move, but I wish the trajectory was more flexible like in Brawl, the move was braindead spammable but controlling the arrow was so fun.
|-
|{{CharHead|Dark Pit|SSBU}}||Silver Bow||⭐⭐||Just Palutena Bow but a lot more generic to be "different". Meh.
|-
|{{CharHead|Zero Suit Samus|SSBU}}||Paralyzer||⭐⭐||Shoutouts to the one ZSS move that actually comes from Metroid. Still whatever.
|-
|{{CharHead|Wario|SSBU}}||Chomp||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Guilty pleasure maybe but I like this move? Could maybe be more punishable if it misses and less reliant on mashing, but I have fun biting others to heal and eating projectiles, and the animations for characters getting chomped are funny. Good command grab.
|-
|{{CharHead|Snake|SSBU}}||Hand Grenade||⭐⭐⭐||Pretty flexible and fun to play with, and I like that you can use it against Snake so you can't mindlessly throw it out, but the frame 1 combo breaker has to go.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ike|SSBU}}||Eruption||⭐⭐||Better than Shield Breaker and Flare Blade, but with both moves in the same game it doesn't feel that cool or unique.
|-
|{{CharHead|Squirtle|SSBU}}||Water Gun||⭐⭐||Eh. Squirtle isn't really a "gimp" character and the move does practically nothing else, so it has very little actual utility.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ivysaur|SSBU}}||Bullet Seed||⭐||Most It exists special to have ever It existed
|-
|{{CharHead|Charizard|SSBU}}||Flamethrower||⭐⭐⭐||Fire Breath but more Honest™
|-
|{{CharHead|Diddy Kong|SSBU}}||Peanut Popgun||⭐⭐⭐||If it shoots you 😱 it's gonna hurt!!!! I always forget you can grab the peanuts as items which is funny, and I like how the overcharge is a discount Falcon Punch. Aside from that it's what you expect from a chargeable projectile.
|-
|{{CharHead|Lucas|SSBU}}||PK Freeze||⭐⭐⭐||PK Flash with sauce, even if it's not much easier to hit. Also a ridiculously overhated move by casuals that don't know how to air dodge. Get frosty'd.
|-
|{{CharHead|Sonic|SSBU}}||Homing Attack||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Actually pretty cool compared to his other specials, and it's from the Adventure games which gives me dopamine. I like how it gets stronger the more you delay it, makes it more flexible instead of a move you always just launch right away.
|-
|{{CharHead|King Dedede|SSBU}}||Inhale||⭐⭐⭐||Much better than in other games because of its powerful projectile spitback, but no copy ability makes it substantially less fun than Kirby's. My ass is already perfect.
|-
|{{CharHead|Olimar|SSBU}}||Pikmin Pluck||⭐||Pikmin Pluck
|-
|{{CharHead|Lucario|SSBU}}||Aura Sphere||⭐⭐⭐||Charge hitbox setups are pretty cool, but the actual projectile doesn't feel as fun or impactful as Shadow Ball until you have pretty high aura, which of course means taking damage.
|-
|{{CharHead|R.O.B.|SSBU}}||Robo Beam||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Pretty fun projectile, flexible and balanced out by its gradual charge mechanic, and it sort of references an ability from the Kirby games which is cool.
|-
|{{CharHead|Toon Link|SSBU}}||Hero's Bow||⭐⭐||Way more ho-hum than Link and Yink's arrows, pretty replaceable compared to his boomerang and bombs.
|-
|{{CharHead|Wolf|SSBU}}||Blaster||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||The ideal projectile. You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.
|-
|{{CharHead|Villager|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Isabelle|SSBU}}||Pocket||⭐||I don't entirely reject this one, but it's so horribly balanced that it doesn't deserve a higher score. Being able to passively hold a projectile forever and release it on command nearly ''2x'' stronger is a disgustingly one-sided position. No risk, all reward option to completely fuck over characters with strong projectiles, while others actually get to play Smash Bros against Villager. Great game design.
|-
|{{CharHead|Mega Man|SSBU}}||Metal Blade||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Great pick and great move to use. Maybe not ''super'' exciting, and it'd be nice if you could redo the 8-way throw without having to throw the blade away, but still a dopamine machine.
|-
|{{CharHead|Wii Fit Trainer|SSBU}}||Sun Salutation||⭐⭐||Eh, it exists. Copypasting aside, would be more fun to use if it had more actual kill power, which it doesn't because uhhh it heals you I guess.
|-
|{{CharHead|Rosalina & Luma|SSBU}}||Luma Shot||⭐⭐⭐||It's nice to see this double as a decently strong projectile, instead of being exclusively a move to control your side character. Olimar could never.
|-
|{{CharHead|Little Mac|SSBU}}||Straight Lunge<br>KO Uppercut||⭐⭐||Straight Lunge alone would be 1 star because it straight up sucks, even uncharged it can hardly hit anyone with more than 3 braincells. KO Uppercut is more exciting, but dealing with a comeback mechanic that can kill you at 30% is not exactly fun and clearly an overtuned tool to patch up Mac's poor design.
|-
|{{CharHead|Greninja|SSBU}}||Water Shuriken||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Fun to use, and the charged version being unique in a way more than "bigger and stronger" is nice. Would be higher if the aerial version was more practical though, you can hardly hit anything with it.
|-
|rowspan=3|{{CharHead|Mii Brawler|SSBU}}||Shot Put||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Strong projectiles my beloved. Somehow one of the most creative Mii specials as well.
|-
|Flashing Mach Punch||⭐||Not an entirely useless move but still pretty boring.
|-
|Exploding Side Kick||⭐⭐⭐||Definitely doesn't have the sauce of Falcon Punch, but it's still fine as a casual party game pick and it's not permanently wasting a special moveslot like Warlock Punch.
|-
|rowspan=3|{{CharHead|Mii Swordfighter|SSBU}}||Gale Strike||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||Smash 4 version would've been significantly lower, this move got an incredible glowup and I love it. Projectile that can potentially combo forever but has to be timed and spaced accurately. Peak.
|-
|Shuriken of Light||⭐⭐⭐||Definitely not as interesting as Gale Strike, but still fun to annoy projectile haters with and nicely balanced by requiring more distance to hit harder.
|-
|Blurring Blade||🚮||Glorified smash attack, really boring with virtually zero utility over other neutral special options. Would much rather have something completely different in a future game.
|-
|rowspan=3|{{CharHead|Mii Gunner|SSBU}}||Charge Blast||⭐||Yeah this is just Charge Shot but worse and more boring. Succ.
|-
|Laser Blaze||⭐⭐⭐||Considerably better now that it's based on Falco's lasers instead of Fox's, but still not as good as the real deal.
|-
|Grenade Launch||⭐⭐⭐||Also a nice one, but losing its charge from Smash 4 unnecessarily made it a lot more generic.
|-
|{{CharHead|Palutena|SSBU}}||Autoreticle||⭐⭐⭐||Auto-aim projectiles are underrated, and I think this one is a nice implementation that still has plenty of counterplay.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pac-Man|SSBU}}||Bonus Fruit||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||By far the most fun part of Pac-Man's moveset. Great homage to the original game, and all fruit have their own properties and uses instead of just being the same projectile but stronger, even if the bell's paralysis is a bit ridiculous. I don't understand people who shit on Pac-Man's moveset and would then rather have much more generic specials just to reference Pac-Man World. (Wow, he throws a pellet! Wow, he does a Bowser Bomb clone! But it references my scrimblo platformer instead of the arcade game everyone knows Pac-Man for!!)
|-
|{{CharHead|Robin|SSBU}}||Thunder||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Slapper, all stages have utility to them and are above-average projectiles (even if Arcthunder got an overkill nerf) balanced out by durability. Not 5 stars because I can't deny Smash 4 Arcthunder was a lot more fun, and they could've just increased its consumption or improved Thoron so it doesn't feel better in every way.
|-
|{{CharHead|Shulk|SSBU}}||Monado Arts||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||Not entirely a move in the traditional sense, but still a blast and single-handedly the reason to play Shulk. Xenoblade Chronicles for the Nintendo Wii!
|-
|{{CharHead|Bowser Jr.|SSBU}}||Clown Cannon||⭐||Another awful move that can't hit anyone who knows basic spacing and defense.
|-
|{{CharHead|Duck Hunt|SSBU}}||Trick Shot||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Easily the coolest move Duck Hunt has by a mile. Extremely useful and versatile but doesn't feel overcentralizing, and can be used against them.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ryu|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Ken|SSBU}}||Hadoken||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Mega Man X core. The most fun out of the input specials imo, I like how this one has an actual benefit to using the lighter versions, and Shakunetsu Hadoken is fun.
|-
|{{CharHead|Cloud|SSBU}}||Blade Beam||⭐⭐⭐||Kind of basic aside from the Limit version, but serves its purpose, and it's well balanced by the aerial version being weaker.
|-
|{{CharHead|Corrin|SSBU}}||Dragon Fang Shot||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||Corrin is a bit meh to me, but I do really like this move despite having no actual basis. Paralyzing projectile that is way more fun and useful than ZSS' stupid gun, and the dragon bite is a great followup if you manage to catch someone up close, or just as a strong punish in general.
|-
|{{CharHead|Bayonetta|SSBU}}||Bullet Climax||⭐⭐||Eh. I get that having the bullets be fired straight forward would make this move incredibly annoying and spammy (Falco lasers on steroids), but it's handicapped in a way that it doesn't feel very fun to use. You can maybe snipe someone offstage with charge bullets and that's about it.
|-
|{{CharHead|Inkling|SSBU}}||Splattershot||⭐⭐||A move that has purpose on paper, but is ultimately outclassed by Inkling's rapid jab, which does the same but more reliably, with less risk, and more reward.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ridley|SSBU}}||Plasma Breath||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||Yes yes gimme. Fun ass projectile, I love how good it is for edgeguarding and how the full string can combo into other attacks; 5 fireballs into a dash attack ledge kill gives me so much serotonin. The recoil for hitting its charge is perhaps unnecessary, but also hilarious how it lets Ridley tank any hit. It could maybe have some startup shaved off, but I love this move regardless.
|-
|{{CharHead|Simon|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Richter|SSBU}}||Axe||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Slow and strong killing projectile appreciation again, except you can also adjust its trajectory and it comes from Castlevania. Banger.
|-
|{{CharHead|King K. Rool|SSBU}}||Blunderbuss||⭐⭐⭐⭐||A move with two pretty different purposes that somehow blend together so well, it's such a blast to use and it alone sets K. Rool plenty apart from other heavies. Shame about that scrubby early patch that nerfed its succ duration though.
|-
|{{CharHead|Incineroar|SSBU}}||Darkest Lariat||⭐⭐⭐||Not a lot going on for this one, and I think it'd be nice if it could reflect projectiles, but it's serviceable and fun to land regardless.
|-
|{{CharHead|Piranha Plant|SSBU}}||Ptooie||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Plant definitely overrelies on this move to an unhealthy degree, but man I can't fault it because it's so fun. It's just so good as an anti-air, disadvantage option, and traditional projectile, and Plant kind of needs it as a jokey and generally lackluster character competitively.
|-
|{{CharHead|Joker|SSBU}}||Gun<br>Gun Special||⭐⭐⭐||"For his neutral spec--" ALRIGHT I GET IT!<br>Okay but seriously people ran that joke so hard into the ground. Anyway, I don't get the hype for this one that much, but it's cool how they fit in so many variations, even if they're far from balanced well (aerial down gun is stupidly overtuned, cartwheel has no practical utility).
|-
|{{CharHead|Hero|SSBU}}||Frizz||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Pretty much echoing my thoughts on Robin's Thunder here, may not have as much variety between versions but it's still fun to throw out for pure destruction.
|-
|{{CharHead|Banjo & Kazooie|SSBU}}||Egg Firing<br>Breegull Blaster||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Would be 3 stars if it was just Egg Firing, which is more or less Mario's Fireball (basic, but fills its purpose and is accurate to its series), but Breegull Blaster is such a cool addition with an also distinct purpose.
|-
|{{CharHead|Terry|SSBU}}||Power Wave||⭐⭐⭐||Not as cool as Hadoken imo, but it's nice that they made up an aerial version even if it's much worse.
|-
|{{CharHead|Byleth|SSBU}}||Failnaught||⭐⭐||First major miss of Ultimate specials besides Splattershot. Never cared much for this one and still don't; it's a slow ass projectile you're gonna hardly if ever actually do anything with, to the point the shield cancel feels actively added to stop you from using it. The charged version is even lamer but it works for FFAs I guess.
|-
|{{CharHead|Min Min|SSBU}}||Punch||🚮||Most generic name imaginable and literally not even a special move. Die.
|-
|{{CharHead|Steve|SSBU}}||Mine<br>Craft<br>Create Block||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Would be 5 stars if it was balanced better, because Steve definitely shouldn't be able to safely hide under a wall to mine stuff for free, but aside from that, it feels like a perfect translation of Minecraft mechanics to Smash.
|-
|{{CharHead|Sephiroth|SSBU}}||Flare||⭐⭐||Similar problems to Failnaught; it's at least cooler, and Gigaflare to fsmash as a shield break punish is so ridiculous in a good way, but I really wish it did more, it feels like a miss in an otherwise really sick moveset and character.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pyra|SSBU}}||Flame Nova||⭐||Pretty much a moveslot they filled up with whatever because Pythra were already too good to need more options. Understandable, but still lame.
|-
|{{CharHead|Mythra|SSBU}}||Lightning Buster||⭐⭐||This one stands out more as an exceptionally strong move in Mythra's kit at least, and her best kill option if you're soloing her for any reason, but it still feels generic.
|-
|{{CharHead|Kazuya|SSBU}}||Devil Blaster||⭐⭐⭐||Feels overly sluggish to land without the same satisfaction as something like Axe or Ptooie, but it's more fun in FFAs at least.
|-
|{{CharHead|Sora|SSBU}}||Magic||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Fun blend of multiple specials; Firaga as your linear projectile that can sort of combo, Thundaga as the wider-area one that can kill, and Blizzaga as the more gimmicky but still useful one.

|-
|{{CharHead|Mario|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Dr. Mario|SSBU}}||Cape<br>Super Sheet||⭐⭐||It has a simple purpose and the reverse effect is cute, but it's... not that interesting really? Aside from reflecting projectiles and cucking some recoveries it doesn't see much use. But I have no interest in the 6394th "redesign Mario" discussion, so whatever.
|-
|{{CharHead|Donkey Kong|SSBU}}||Headbutt||⭐||Pretty boring now that burying isn't exclusive to specials and also done by much better moves.
|-
|{{CharHead|Link|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Young Link|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Toon Link|SSBU}}||Boomerang||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Another classic and cool move with a lot of creative potential. Return hitbox combos are cool, one at a time prevents mindless spam, and I like that it can start combos at point blank; it's more unique reward to offset its long startup. Down under.
|-
|{{CharHead|Samus|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Dark Samus|SSBU}}||Missile||⭐⭐⭐||Now this is Metroid dopamine. I wish the homing Missiles worked better, but the Super Missiles are cool.
|-
|{{CharHead|Yoshi|SSBU}}||Egg Roll||⭐||It's baffling how a move that sounds cool on paper has turned out so shitty and dysfunctional for four games straight. Says a lot that Yoshi would arguably be better if he had no side special at all.
|-
|{{CharHead|Kirby|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssbm}}{{GameIcon|ssbb}} Hammer<br>{{GameIcon|ssb4}}{{GameIcon|ssbu}} Hammer Flip||⭐||I always found this move zzzzzzzzz, which is a shame compared to how fun it is in the Kirby games. Just a slow and strong move with a small hitbox, and the charge is the same as Jet Hammer's but worse. It's almost like Kirby has another slow and strong special except cooler and much more unique. I sleep.
|-
|{{CharHead|Fox|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Falco|SSBU}}||Fox Illusion<br>Falco Phantasm||⭐⭐⭐⭐||A completely made up special I actually really like: it's a versatile recovery and the combo potential it has in Ult now gives me dopamine, while stopping on shield prevents spammability. Cool stuff. Falco's is definitely better though.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pikachu|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Pichu|SSBU}}||Skull Bash||⭐⭐||Kinda lame and basically recovery-only move (on already characters with an excellent recovery), and a weird pick from Pokemon that is barely even associated with Pikachu or Pichu. Pretty replaceable move.
|-
|{{CharHead|Luigi|SSBU}}||Green Missile||⭐⭐⭐||Skull Bash with actual sauce, even if almost entirely because of the misfire.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ness|SSBU}}||PK Fire||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Good stuff and extremely overhated by casuals (just shield lmao), always fun to have projectiles that reward more setup beyond "shoot this to do damage", especially with the aerial version's different angle.
|-
|{{CharHead|Captain Falcon|SSBU}}||Raptor Boost||⭐⭐⭐⭐||A bit ridiculous in Ultimate (why does it have armor lol) but also a great dopamine machine.
|-
|{{CharHead|Jigglypuff|SSBU}}||Pound||⭐||Possibly the most boring looking special in the entire series. It "has utility", sure, in the same way aerials have utility. Special moves should be special.
|-
|{{CharHead|Peach|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Daisy|SSBU}}||Peach Bomber<br>Daisy Bomber||⭐⭐⭐||Not based on anything, but it's solid enough and fun to get a combo finish with every once and then.
|-
|{{CharHead|Bowser|SSBU}}||Flying Slam||🚮||Possibly a hot take, but I've never liked this move at all. It's a command grab with stupid fast startup that puts you in essentially an annoyingly long cutscene, deals big damage, is one of Bowser's best kill moves, and can also effortlessly lead to an inescapable sacrificial KO, which just incentivizes Bowser players to annoyingly overuse it as much as they can with little thought. Bowser dies first in the sacrificial KO, sure, but that doesn't take away how nothing about the move feels interestingly designed or cerebrally engaging. Instead it's just a big overtuned grab to abuse in both casual and competitive play, with significantly less creative or flexible design as other command grabs like Flame Choke or Monkey Flip, and not even based on anything from Mario. I'd rather have an improved Koopa Klaw back. Hell, even combine it with that Dash Slash custom he had in Smash 4, that'd be amazing.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ice Climbers|SSBU}}||Squall Hammer||⭐⭐⭐||Probably the most fun part of the ICs' moveset, it's a nice approach tool and damage racker, and one of the few moves that emphasizes keeping both climbers together for better effect.
|-
|{{CharHead|Sheik|SSBU}}||Burst Grenade||⭐⭐||Not very practical or interesting, even if it stands out as one of Sheik's few true high power and crowd control moves. Still better than Chain though.
|-
|{{CharHead|Zelda|SSBU}}||Din's Fire||⭐||Poorly designed and very situational for four games now, and a disservice to how cool the OoT spell it's based on is. Explosive Flame is an actual good version of this move. It needs a significant overhaul to both be useful and not make Zelda's playstyle lamer.
|-
|{{CharHead|Marth|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Lucina|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Roy|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Chrom|SSBU}}||Dancing Blade<br>Double-Edge Dance||⭐⭐||Eh, I feel this move has been so streamlined that it's basically a privileged jab now and it's not very interesting. No more aerial boost, no more cool down 3 spike, no cool timing mixups, just mash forward to launch away and down for slightly more damage. Also Roy's should not kill as early as it does, it's so stupid.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ganondorf|SSBU}}||Flame Choke||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||Ganon's most original move is by far his coolest, I love it. Virgin Flying Slam vs chad Flame Choke. Feels good to have a long ranged option vs shield and have to earn your own punishes that directly show how good you and the other player are. Ganoncide is also more deserved than Bowsercide could ever be, even pre mash out nerf, requiring actual skill to land and giving Ganon at least some counterplay against edgeguarding.
|-
|{{CharHead|Mewtwo|SSBU}}||Confusion||⭐⭐⭐||Cool as a reflector and simultaneously command grab you get your own punishes out of, but not much else going on. <s>Bring back the soul breaker glitch</s>
|-
|{{CharHead|Mr. Game & Watch|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssbm}} Judgment<br>{{GameIcon|ssbb}}{{GameIcon|ssb4}}{{GameIcon|ssbu}} Judge||⭐⭐⭐||9s are hype but I think it would be better if other non-1 or 2 hammers had more useful effects, most people really just use it for the 9. Sadge.
|-
|{{CharHead|Meta Knight|SSBU}}||Drill Rush||⭐⭐⭐⭐||While Mach Tornado became a lot less fun to use in Ultimate, this one arguably became a lot better. Versatile to control and recover with, and a great offstage kill move that also bounces you off on hit as a reward for managing to land it. Cool shit.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pit|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Dark Pit|SSBU}}||Upperdash Arm<br>Electroshock Arm||⭐⭐||Yeah, it sucks. Usable enough to not be 1 star, but this really is just a shittier Raptor Boost except it kills instead of comboing. Why does it have so much aerial endlag and landing lag? Why does it have that useless projectile deflection? Electroshock Arm's differences aren't enough to make it any better, so same opinion.
|-
|{{CharHead|Zero Suit Samus|SSBU}}||Plasma Whip||⭐||Remember how ZSS' Brawl fsmash was literally a shittier version of this move? Not like any of her specials is gonna score highly, but wow this move is so boring. It exists to give her a powerful tool and that's it. The tether is pointless when she already has a zair, and did you know it has a button-held version that sends you towards her instead of having kill power, except it deals less damage with no actual combo ability? Great character.
|-
|{{CharHead|Wario|SSBU}}||Wario Bike||⭐⭐⭐⭐||May not be the most Wario move of all but still plenty of fun to mess with. Wanna run over foes normally? Wanna dismount and send the bike away? Wanna use the wheelie slam for a kill? Wanna eat it to heal and charge up Waft? Wanna throw it for big damage and setups? Wanna attack it on purpose to extend your hitboxes? Wanna use it for a recovery boost? Wario Bike has it for you.
|-
|{{CharHead|Snake|SSBU}}||Remote Missile||⭐||Another move idea that sounds great and fun on paper, but it's ultimately a much worse designed PK Thunder, having a disproportionate advantage against any remotely subpar recovery, where the target has to put much more effort into dodging the missile that Snake has to put into controlling it, while in any other scenario it's practically useless because of how slow it is to start and move across longer distances, even in casual matches. By far the lamest thing in Snake's moveset, which is a shame given how sick and unique most of his other moves are.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ike|SSBU}}||Quick Draw||⭐⭐⭐||Fun classic that has still aged well in Ike's moveset. Timing a landing lag-less recovery with it is the best feeling when playing Ike.
|-
|{{CharHead|Squirtle|SSBU}}||Withdraw||⭐⭐||Another move that has kinda just existed for me. Not particularly strong and Squirtle doesn't often have a reason to use it, especially when another Pokemon in the team has a lunging side B but much stronger. Also I still have no idea why you get cucked so hard for getting footstooled during this move.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ivysaur|SSBU}}||Razor Leaf||⭐⭐⭐||Serviceable as a projectile. Having a random trajectory is stupid and adds nothing to the move, but at least it's way less severe than in Brawl.
|-
|{{CharHead|Charizard|SSBU}}||Flare Blitz||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||Peak. Zard gets its own better Falcon Punch and it just fits so well, an all-out fuck you move that's so fun to kill with and also doubles as a great recovery option (thanks Ult patches for buffing its ledge snap window). Good dragon.
|-
|{{CharHead|Diddy Kong|SSBU}}||Monkey Flip||⭐⭐⭐||Admittedly I don't hate this one. Could maybe be more punishable if it misses for how good it is, but it's way more versatile and creative than Flying Slam, for one. Nice balance between choosing to grab or kick away, and racking up damage with the auto-pummel or throwing right away.
|-
|{{CharHead|Lucas|SSBU}}||PK Fire||⭐⭐⭐||Not as exciting as Ness' version, but still a surprisingly strong projectile that is satisfying to throw out with a well-timed landing.
|-
|{{CharHead|Sonic|SSBU}}||Spin Dash||🚮||This move has caused so much damage to Smash both casually and competitively that it doesn't deserve anything, especially not before Ultimate with that fucking stupid shield cancel. Get redesigned or die.
|-
|{{CharHead|King Dedede|SSBU}}||Gordo Throw||⭐⭐||I'd like it more but it definitely needs more rebalancing. Too easy to use against Dedede himself, and the RNG-based wall stick is stupid.
|-
|{{CharHead|Olimar|SSBU}}||Pikmin Throw||⭐⭐⭐||Guilty pleasure? May be annoying, but it's funny to see opponents pelted by tiny creatures and possibly the most fun thing you can do with Olimar. Not higher only because attacking/getting the Pikmin out kinda sucks (why is it mash-based) and shouldn't be so inconsistent across characters.
|-
|{{CharHead|Lucario|SSBU}}||Force Palm||⭐⭐⭐||The ranged portion is meh, but the grab is quite good and easy to underestimate, it may be grounded only but it's deceptively powerful and discourages you from panic shielding against Lucario.
|-
|{{CharHead|R.O.B.|SSBU}}||Arm Rotor||⭐⭐⭐||Finally, after two games of being complete garbage you get to do something. Offstage kill setups are so cool and take real skill, and it's still serviceable to kill with onstage, but very punishable if missed. In no way is this move broken or even one of the best moves in Smash, it just actually exists now.
|-
|{{CharHead|Wolf|SSBU}}||Wolf Flash||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||My beloved, ''so much'' better now that you can aim it, it has more kill power, and there's actual hitstun to set up into it. Wolf Flash "sacrificial" KOs have more sauce than command grab sacrificial KOs ever could. Good boy.
|-
|{{CharHead|Villager|SSBU}}||Lloid Rocket||⭐⭐||Definitely not as stupid as Pocket, but still a pretty boring projectile with pretty boring application. You throw out a slow and weak passive hitbox with no thought, wooow. The ride is cute but has practically no utility (you'll never hit any competent player with it, and Villager's up B is already one of the best recoveries in the game).
|-
|{{CharHead|Mega Man|SSBU}}||Crash Bomber||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Another pretty fun one, despite the Mega Man 2 overrepresentation and not being a very good weapon there (at least there's no Boobeam Trap in this game!). Combo setups with it are dopamine and I love that it can still stick to characters with invincibility.
|-
|{{CharHead|Wii Fit Trainer|SSBU}}||Header||⭐⭐⭐||Often used by WFT players as a boring run-away projectile, but it's considerably more unique than Sun Salutation and definitely has room for cool setups every once and then. I also love how strong the header spike is.
|-
|{{CharHead|Rosalina & Luma|SSBU}}||Star Bits||⭐⭐||Always found this one pretty generic and a disservice to how fun shooting star bits in Mario Galaxy actually is. It's just a weak close-range combo with the only distinction that it's used by Luma. That Smash 4 custom that shot a single star bit farther forward was cool though.
|-
|{{CharHead|Little Mac|SSBU}}||Jolt Haymaker||⭐⭐⭐⭐||The much cooler Little Mac special. Long distance and variable timing makes it excellent as a combo finisher or directly a strong punish, it gives him at least one tool against edgeguarding, and no helplessness makes it more viable for offstage kills while still being risky. Good stuff.
|-
|{{CharHead|Greninja|SSBU}}||Shadow Sneak||⭐⭐||Meh. Would be better if it wasn't so slow to actually hit anything with (completely contrasting its utility as a high-priority attack in Pokemon), instead it's relegated to a recovery extension and not much else. Strange Greninja moveset L alongside Substitute.
|-
|rowspan=3|{{CharHead|Mii Brawler|SSBU}}||Onslaught||⭐⭐⭐||Nice on-the-spot punish option that feels great to land and can kill pretty early, even if its rage 2.0 mechanic is weird and kind of overkill.
|-
|Burning Dropkick||⭐||Meh. Just generic, and losing its charge from Smash 4 made it even more so.
|-
|Suplex||⭐⭐||2 stars for at least doing something distinct enough from the other side Bs, but it's an overall generic command grab, ridiculously undersauced. I'd still take it over Flying Slam though.
|-
|rowspan=3|{{CharHead|Mii Swordfighter|SSBU}}||Airborne Assault||⭐⭐||It ''looks'' cooler and more distinct than Burning Dropkick at least, but yeah, also unnecessarily hurt by losing its charge.
|-
|{{GameIcon|ssbu}} Gale Stab<br>{{GameIcon|ssb4}} Slash Launcher||⭐||Just Quick Draw but much more boring aesthetically and functionally. Slop.
|-
|Chakram||⭐⭐⭐||Pretty much ''the'' Swordfighter side B, but not that interesting compared to Gale Strike, there could definitely be more of a difference between the tilt and smash version than just multi-hit vs single hit.
|-
|rowspan=3|{{CharHead|Mii Gunner|SSBU}}||Flame Pillar||⭐⭐||Just PK Fire/Arcfire with way less sauce. Not much else to say.
|-
|Stealth Burst||⭐||May be sort of better Din's Fire, but ultimately still a copypaste move with garbage functionality that wishes it could be actually good like Explosive Flame.
|-
|Gunner Missile||⭐⭐⭐||Might be straight up just Samus' Missiles, but more stars for being a lot more fun than Gunner's other side Bs, and the homing version is definitely how Samus' should work as well.
|-
|{{CharHead|Palutena|SSBU}}||Explosive Flame||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||Banger. This is what Din's Fire wants to be and just can't. A ranged explosion with actual utility for racking up damage, pressuring shields, starting combos with proper setup, and killing, that can also be placed at different distances, and a huge glowup from the original Smash 4 custom.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pac-Man|SSBU}}||Power Pellet||⭐⭐⭐||Not as exciting as Bonus Fruit and aiming for the strong part of the attack kinda sucks, but it's still nice for big brain setups and as a flexible recovery.
|-
|{{CharHead|Robin|SSBU}}||Arcfire||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Not as cool as Thunder but still pretty fun to use, with durability once again preventing it from being a low-effort spammable tool.
|-
|{{CharHead|Shulk|SSBU}}||Back Slash||⭐⭐⭐||Basic but uniquely gimmicky enough that I like it. I wish the ledge grab window still wasn't as cucked as it is though.
|-
|{{CharHead|Bowser Jr.|SSBU}}||Clown Kart Dash||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Surprisingly a pretty good and fun move to use, even if it's basically a more sane and much better designed Spin Dash.
|-
|{{CharHead|Duck Hunt|SSBU}}||Clay Shooting||⭐⭐||Considerably less interesting than Trick Shot. Cute reference, but it exists I guess.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ryu|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Ken|SSBU}}||Tatsumaki Senpukyaku||⭐⭐⭐||Not as fun as Hadoken, but still nice to combo into and recover with. Both versions get the same rating but I prefer Ryu's, it feels more satisfying to land.
|-
|{{CharHead|Cloud|SSBU}}||Cross Slash||⭐⭐||Hot take probably, but I think this one is pretty generic. It's ultimately just a jab with cool visuals, that turns into a kill move with Limit, and that's it. As basic as it gets.
|-
|{{CharHead|Corrin|SSBU}}||Dragon Lunge||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Still a fun move with plenty of options, and people definitely exaggerate how nerfed it was in Ult. It's still a great move, just not with easily spammable kicks turning Corrin into Dragon Lunge: The Character anymore. In turn, the jump is much better and you can cancel it manually.
|-
|{{CharHead|Bayonetta|SSBU}}||Heel Slide<br>After Burner Kick||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Good stuff. Kind of basic moves by themselves, but the sum of all parts is where the fun is. Always feels good to land a double ABK, and down-angled ABK is also quite underrated.
|-
|{{CharHead|Inkling|SSBU}}||Splat Roller||⭐⭐⭐||Not ranked higher because it's not too fun to be on the receiving end (mashing is cringe), but it's cool and distinct enough to fuck around with at least.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ridley|SSBU}}||Space Pirate Rush||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||All hail the best command grab in the game. Could also have some startup shaved off, but it's one of the most fun moves in the game regardless.
|-
|{{CharHead|Simon|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Richter|SSBU}}||Cross||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Banger in the Castlevania games and as much of a banger here. Return hitbox combos are pure dopamine.
|-
|{{CharHead|King K. Rool|SSBU}}||Crownerang||⭐⭐⭐||Would be higher if the crown wasn't so easy to steal and cuck K. Rool so hard with, but aside from that, despite seeming like just another boomerang special, it's quite nice and the armor gives it a uniquely cool advantage.
|-
|{{CharHead|Isabelle|SSBU}}||Fishing Rod||⭐⭐||I'd really like to rank it higher but it doesn't do it for me. It's conceptually more interesting than Lloid Rocket, but Isabelle overrelies on it to an annoying degree, throw damage changing based on the hook's speed and fully affecting knockback is really stupid (have fun killing 20%-30% later just because you were slightly off), and it feels like it straight up replaces her grab with how much better all the throws are. I'm glad it doesn't work on shields though or it'd be way more annoying.
|-
|{{CharHead|Incineroar|SSBU}}||Alolan Whip||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Ultimate really cooked more with its command grabs overall, comparing this or Space Pirate Rush to Flying Slam is just no contest. Versatile, very useful but still has risk to it, can aid in recovery, and requires timing for the meaty portion. Good stuff.
|-
|{{CharHead|Piranha Plant|SSBU}}||Poison Breath||⭐⭐⭐||At first glance it seems like another lame projectile with a storable charge you can easily sit on, but needing to keep the opponent within the cloud for maximum effect keeps it much more interesting.
|-
|{{CharHead|Joker|SSBU}}||Eiha<br>Eigaon||⭐⭐⭐||I love the angri faces characters have while cursed, but aside from that it's pretty standard. Not much to say.
|-
|{{CharHead|Hero|SSBU}}||Zap||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Much like Frizz, it's super fun as a ridiculously strong chargeable move balanced out by MP, but in this case I definitely favor Zapple over Kazap.
|-
|{{CharHead|Banjo & Kazooie|SSBU}}||Wonderwing||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||Likely another hot take: I love this move, and it only feels overtuned due to so much of Banjo's normal moveset being barebones. An exceptionally powerful special running on a limited resource is not only a first for Smash and well executed, but accurate to the source game and one of the most creative pulls out of it. And for people complaining anyway, they made reckless use of it so punishable that, really, if you get hit by a crutchy reckless use of this move it's entirely your fault, and you should be the one understanding the positions at which it's viable or not. Thank you Sakurai for Wonderwing.
|-
|rowspan=2|{{CharHead|Terry|SSBU}}||Burning Knuckle||⭐⭐⭐||It's alright, I guess?
|-
|Crack Shoot||⭐⭐⭐⭐||The cooler Terry side B. When I fight Terry I foolishly keep forgetting it exists and how good of a cross-up tool it is. I also have to admit I don't really have issues inputting it, even in FFAs? But I don't have issues with Smash's quirky input moves in general.
|-
|{{CharHead|Byleth|SSBU}}||Areadbhar||⭐⭐||Not a bad special by any means, but still kind of generic, just flashy enough to not look as boring as something like Pound.
|-
|{{CharHead|Steve|SSBU}}||Minecart||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Probably controversial to also rate this one so high, but yeah, despite its bustedness it's one of the most fun "ride something around" side Bs to use. Also the minecart grab is fun to use and really overhated; may be mash-based to escape, but unlike Splat Roller it's not routinely leading to a free kill. Really the only issue is the redstone-powered ram shouldn't be so ridiculously strong for how quickly you can throw it out and jump out of it. Everything else is fine.
|-
|{{CharHead|Sephiroth|SSBU}}||Shadow Flare||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||The cooler Flare, my beloved. Projectiles that track you and hit after a set time are such a cool ass concept with a ton of creative potential, but even beyond that it's a versatile move, with a charge that affects the beam's distance and how many orbs it places on you. Easily one of my favorite moves in the game.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pyra|SSBU}}||Blazing End||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Always loved this one, and with how good it is it's understandable that Flame Nova was kept on such a tight leash. A projectile that covers a large area for a long time, deals a ton of damage and can even sort of kill, on a character that's otherwise all physical, but has the unique tradeoff of her not being able to attack until it comes back. It may be straightforward in usage, but that doesn't take away any of its coolness.
|-
|{{CharHead|Mythra|SSBU}}||Photon Edge||⭐⭐⭐||Significantly less cool than Blazing End but it's alright, and I don't mind Mythra's wacky warp effect.
|-
|{{CharHead|Kazuya|SSBU}}||Devil Fist||⭐⭐||Eh, I don't like this one that much in practice and it overall feels like a worse Flame Choke in application. For the actual good part you need to be so close, at a distance where you might as well use Kazuya's dozen other options that give him as good of a punish if not better, while the rest is so limp and unsatisfying.
|-
|{{CharHead|Sora|SSBU}}||Sonic Blade||⭐⭐⭐||Pretty fun to use with three dashes that you can freely aim around, but it's made a bit too basic in application with the auto-aim, and it's lame that trying to manually land the dashes actively makes it weaker.

|-
|{{CharHead|Link|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssbb}}{{GameIcon|ssb4}} Gale Boomerang||⭐⭐||I don't miss this one. Sort of paraphrasing my thoughts on F.L.U.D.D., the windbox always felt to me more like a gimmick just to Twilight Princess-ify the move rather than anything practical, and the actual hitbox is much less rewarding for no reason.
|-
|{{CharHead|Bowser|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssbm}} Koopa Klaw||⭐⭐⭐||The real Bowser side B. Much better in concept, but it could be refined more (in a game with more than 13 months of dev time), the outer slash hitbox is awkward and often gets in the way of the grab, and the throws themselves could be more useful.
|-
|{{CharHead|Sheik|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssbm}}{{GameIcon|ssbb}} Chain||⭐||I have no idea what the purpose of this move is. Just flicking the stick mindlessly to do inconsistent small damage, which Sheik has like 20 other ways to do more practically? "Blocking projectiles" you might as well just jump over or stuff out with aerials? Annoying people at the edge and stalling the game instead of just killing them with an actual edgeguard tool? That weird hitbox jacket glitch in Brawl? What a weirdly overengineered move that accomplishes nothing of actual significance. There's a reason the Belmonts' whip twirl wasn't a special, and they deserve to have it much more as its actual inventors. Also shoutouts to the Brawl tether recovery nobody used lmao
|-
|{{CharHead|Ganondorf|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssbm}} Gerudo Dragon||⭐⭐||Just Raptor Boost but much less interesting and in a game where it was overall way worse. Flame Choke was a much needed replacement.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pit|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssbb}} Angel Ring||🚮||This is like a special move designed by a 10 year old Smash fan for a fake fangame except actually real. Good riddance.
|-
|{{CharHead|King Dedede|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssbb}} Waddle Dee Toss||⭐⭐||Definitely not gonna call this better than Gordo Throw either. More RNG-based, way weaker (except the Gordo which is a lot rarer), and the Waddle Doo attack is cute but good luck having anyone actually get hit by it.
|-
|{{CharHead|Mii Brawler|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssb4}} Headache Maker||🚮||Hello Mario's forward air but turned into a special move for no reason.
|-
|rowspan=3|{{CharHead|Palutena|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssb4}} Reflect Barrier||⭐||Just Mirror Shield again. Boring special is boring, way better now as part of her counter.
|-
|{{GameIcon|ssb4}} Angelic Missile||⭐||Boring. Did anyone actually pick this one?
|-
|{{GameIcon|ssb4}} Super Speed||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Actually pretty fun and much better balanced than Spin Dash due to its cooldown (and no stupid shield cancel), but Ult Palutena definitely doesn't need this move.

|-
|{{CharHead|Mario|SSBU}}||Super Jump Punch||⭐⭐⭐||Simple but effective classic. Getting ladder kills with it is fun, and it's sort of Smash's first take on a fighting game DP which is neat.
|-
|{{CharHead|Donkey Kong|SSBU}}||Spinning Kong||⭐⭐⭐||A strange combination of sometimes fun and sometimes not fun to use. Could be higher if Ult didn't neuter the aerial version for no reason, racking up damage with it was fun.
|-
|{{CharHead|Link|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Young Link|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Toon Link|SSBU}}||Spin Attack||⭐⭐⭐||Fun move to use but a little bit generic now. Charging it should definitely do more, maybe for Link it creates a larger shockwave like in OoT and for Tink it lets him move around. I like that Yink's is a more unique and combo-focused version though.
|-
|{{CharHead|Samus|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Dark Samus|SSBU}}||Screw Attack||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Good stuff, I like zoners having anti-pressure tools that can still be played around, and it can still be used offensively in ladder combos so it's not entirely a shield crutch.
|-
|{{CharHead|Yoshi|SSBU}}||Egg Throw||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||Surprisingly intricate and well-crafted for a 64 special. The combination of hold-based distance and many different angles allow for so many creative uses, which Ult made even better with the bounce-off for lower angles. So good and unique of an up B that I think its recovery handicap is completely justified.
|-
|{{CharHead|Kirby|SSBU}}||Final Cutter||⭐||Bleh. I feel this only exists as a "get some vertical distance after your 5 jumps" move, and it's completely outclassed by many other up-and-down up Bs now. Slow, can't combo or finish combos, can't kill, has no use OoS, and the projectile is complete garbage. Kill it.
|-
|{{CharHead|Fox|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Falco|SSBU}}||Fire Fox<br>Fire Bird||⭐⭐⭐||Another well-aged classic, may often end up as edgeguard fodder but it's still quite flexible and has underrated offensive use.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pikachu|SSBU}}||Quick Attack||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Another pretty well-aged 64 recovery, and a cool take on the Pokemon move, with versatility that takes more skill and can be used offensively every once and then. Also love the hurtbox stretch jank, stupid rat gets what it deserves for pancaking.
|-
|{{CharHead|Luigi|SSBU}}||Super Jump Punch||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Putting aside Luigi's ridiculously polarized design, I love this move. It's Rest but good. When you don't have moves that can easily combo into it at any time, there's so much more risk to landing that tiny sweetspot and the reward feels so much better, and the aerial (easier to land) version being weaker is genius.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ness|SSBU}}||PK Thunder||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||Legit might be my favorite up B in the series. The bolt is flexible, fun to control, and so rewarding on hit while still being reasonably avoidable, and "PK Rocket" completely outclasses PK Flash as an all-out punish while still being a high-risk, high-reward recovery. Can't aim it? Git gud. Too gimpable? Air dodge instead or just don't start it so close to the edge. It's incredible and I think no other up B has been close to how simulatenously creative, fun, and useful this move is, I love it.
|-
|{{CharHead|Captain Falcon|SSBU}}||Falcon Dive||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Cool and unique command grab and much more fun now that it can't get so easily cucked anymore as a recovery.
|-
|{{CharHead|Jigglypuff|SSBU}}||Sing||⭐⭐||Eh. Use a slow and hard to land move to put opponent to sleep... to then use a slow and hard to land kill move you might as well have thrown out right away. Idk, even as a finally not garbage move it's boring.
|-
|{{CharHead|Peach|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Daisy|SSBU}}||Peach Parasol<br>Daisy Parasol||⭐⭐⭐||Parasol gliding is cute, but aside from that it's just another Super Jump Punch / Screw Attack. Not much to say.
|-
|{{CharHead|Bowser|SSBU}}||Whirling Fortress||⭐⭐⭐||A nice and fun move on a heavyweight, quick with pretty good but overrated OoS utility (just outspace it lol), but personally not a fan of the aerial version's distance being mash-based now.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ice Climbers|SSBU}}||Belay||⭐⭐||Meh. Not really interesting outside of the partner gimmick, and getting way less distance for hitting someone is really stupid.
|-
|{{CharHead|Sheik|SSBU}}||Vanish||⭐⭐⭐||Shoutouts to the one Sheik move from OoT. Which is fine because many of her original moves still slap.
|-
|{{CharHead|Zelda|SSBU}}||Farore's Wind||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Way more fun after getting buffed to be an OoS kill move, now this is what Zelda should be more about: a defensive option that is integral because it directly leads to a powerful punish, not because it's an easy panic button to throw out, and can still be used offensively if you wish.
|-
|{{CharHead|Dr. Mario|SSBU}}||Super Jump Punch||⭐⭐⭐||A ridiculously good move balanced out by the character it's on. Sometimes he's worth picking just for the frame 3 kill move dopamine.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pichu|SSBU}}||Agility||⭐⭐||Just Quick Attack but made much worse by no hitboxes and recoil, and not even a move Pichu learns in its series. Lame.
|-
|{{CharHead|Marth|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Lucina|SSBU}}||Dolphin Slash||⭐⭐⭐||Simple but effective, fun to use both offensively and OoS defensively.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ganondorf|SSBU}}||Dark Dive||⭐⭐⭐||Kind of filler compared to Falcon Dive, but still good now that it's been buffed to be much better (the Brawl version would be 1 star, straight up one of the worst moves in all of Smash)
|-
|{{CharHead|Mewtwo|SSBU}}||Teleport||⭐⭐||Meh? Quick and accurate to its series, but no offensive use makes it way less interesting than other recoveries.
|-
|{{CharHead|Roy|SSBU}}||Blazer||⭐⭐||Eh, aside from the Melee lightweight instakill exploit I never found this one that interesting? It's just Dolphin Slash but generally worse to kill with and recover with. Zero wants his move back. (All of Roy's specials have scored low... that means Roy is slop 😱)
|-
|{{CharHead|Chrom|SSBU}}||Soaring Slash||🚮||"Original" echo special and it's just another character's special but more generic and with more braindead cheese. Die.
|-
|{{CharHead|Mr. Game & Watch|SSBU}}||Fire||⭐||Crazy how a single buff turned this from an average recovery into one of the most braindead moves in all of Smash. Get nerfed or die.
|-
|{{CharHead|Meta Knight|SSBU}}||Shuttle Loop||⭐⭐⭐||Probably feels basic now and definitely overtuned, but I still find it fun to use. Finishing ladder combos or just catching people at high percents for a kill is easy dopamine, and I'd rather have it over his ridiculous glide attack and double gliding from Brawl.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pit|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Dark Pit|SSBU}}||Power of Flight||⭐||Boring. Literally just a slow linear recovery with no other utility, it feels so much like a move made to fill a slot and nothing else.
|-
|{{CharHead|Zero Suit Samus|SSBU}}||Boost Kick||⭐||This is just Super Jump Punch ''again'' but stupidly overtuned for no reason other than to make ZSS a strong character everyone wants to play. Awful.
|-
|{{CharHead|Wario|SSBU}}||Corkscrew||⭐||By far Wario's most boring and subpar special that could so easily be Wario Landified, pretty much nobody talks about this one.
|-
|{{CharHead|Snake|SSBU}}||Cypher||⭐⭐⭐||Cool in concept and looks, would be higher if it didn't feel so sluggish to control.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ike|SSBU}}||Aether||⭐⭐⭐⭐||The real pioneer of up-and-down up Bs and still the most fun one, especially after Ult patches made it a much better kill move, and the only one where the sword is actually a separate object which makes it cooler. Could probably be 5 stars but it has the same 0% kill cheese I hate about Soaring Slash.
|-
|{{CharHead|Squirtle|SSBU}}||Waterfall||⭐⭐⭐||Super Jump Punch again, I guess? Squirtle also has up air ladders and water windboxes, I can't believe it was a Mario clone all along. Perchance.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ivysaur|SSBU}}||Vine Whip||⭐⭐⭐⭐||A move Ult made significantly more fun compared to its shitty Brawl version. Aiming for the sweetspot and killing with it out of a combo is so fun.
|-
|{{CharHead|Charizard|SSBU}}||Fly||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Another Super Jump Punch, but it has super armor and it's on a dragon, so I'm biased.
|-
|{{CharHead|Diddy Kong|SSBU}}||Rocketbarrel Boost||⭐⭐⭐||Could maybe not have the janky randomly-turning barrels that are unblockable for some reason if Diddy is hit out of it, but aside from that, it's alright. Not much to say about it.
|-
|{{CharHead|Lucas|SSBU}}||PK Thunder||⭐⭐⭐||Still good but considerably less fun than Ness' version imo, the piercing multi-hit bolt is way less rewarding on hit and leaves you more vulnerable (and Lucas has his zair to recover so being harder to edgeguard isn't much of an advantage), and the multi-hit PK Rocket also feels weaker and less reliable.
|-
|{{CharHead|Sonic|SSBU}}||Spring Jump||⭐⭐⭐⭐||The only other well designed Sonic special. Fun blend of reliable to recover with, ability to fuck around with the spring for setups, or drop it on others as a decent edgeguard option, and I kinda miss the throw combos he had with it in Smash 4, but before getting any buffs he should be rebalanced.
|-
|{{CharHead|King Dedede|SSBU}}||Super Dedede Jump||⭐⭐⭐||Eeyup! POOM.
|-
|{{CharHead|Olimar|SSBU}}||Winged Pikmin||⭐⭐||Pretty much a clunkier and less exciting Wings of Icarus, which makes sense because that'd be annoying on Olimar, but still not exactly something to write home about.
|-
|{{CharHead|Lucario|SSBU}}||Extreme Speed||⭐⭐||Eh, never liked this one that much myself, would much rather have it as a quicker and more offensively-oriented move like the PM version instead of Lucario doing a long goofy Saiyan flight with a weak hitbox at the end.
|-
|{{CharHead|R.O.B.|SSBU}}||Robo Burner||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Now this is how you make a hitboxless recovery interesting imo, give it a lot more flexibility in return while still having limits that must be played around. Just a shame about the barely visible fuel bar Ult swears you can see.
|-
|{{CharHead|Wolf|SSBU}}||Fire Wolf||⭐⭐⭐||Admittedly not as exciting as Fox and Falco's up Bs, but still nice to kill with every once and then.
|-
|{{CharHead|Villager|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Isabelle|SSBU}}||Balloon Trip||⭐⭐⭐||Fun recovery even if it's rather busted, I don't mind this one. <s>Says a lot that one of Villager's most interesting moves isn't actually from Animal Crossing</s>
|-
|{{CharHead|Mega Man|SSBU}}||Rush Coil||⭐⭐⭐||Perfect pick that fills its purpose, and rebounce setups are fun, but ultimately it's not too different from Spring Jump.
|-
|{{CharHead|Wii Fit Trainer|SSBU}}||Super Hoop||⭐⭐||Never found this one that interesting, aside from that busted Smash 4 custom. It exists.
|-
|{{CharHead|Rosalina & Luma|SSBU}}||Launch Star||⭐⭐||Cute Mario Galaxy pull, but as a linear hitboxless recovery it's rather basic and uninteresting.
|-
|{{CharHead|Little Mac|SSBU}}||Rising Uppercut||⭐⭐⭐||Nice out of shield and kill option, and Little Mac deserves having at least one tool to hit opponents above him.
|-
|{{CharHead|Greninja|SSBU}}||Hydro Pump||⭐⭐⭐||This feels to me like a less interesting Quick Attack and I can't really rank it higher, but still not a bad move.
|-
|rowspan=3|{{CharHead|Mii Brawler|SSBU}}||Soaring Axe Kick||⭐⭐||Better now that you can omit the falling portion, and not a bad move (it's decently fast and can kill with the landing hit), but I still don't care much about it.
|-
|Helicopter Kick||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Banger. A great and functionally unique up B that trades recovery ability for high power and potentially early kills. This is the kind of sauce Miis need more of.
|-
|{{GameIcon|ssbu}} Thrust Uppercut<br>{{GameIcon|ssb4}} Piston Punch||⭐⭐||Pretty much same thought as Soaring Axe Kick, it's a viable option that works but it also gets tiring to see the same kind of move over and over.
|-
|rowspan=3|{{CharHead|Mii Swordfighter|SSBU}}||Stone Scabbard||⭐||Boring.
|-
|Skyward Slash Dash||⭐⭐⭐||Could definitely be better (why is the last hit so weak), but gets more points for being a lot more unique than the other up Bs even with Octaslash existing now.
|-
|Hero's Spin||⭐||Blatant copypaste is blatant.
|-
|rowspan=3|{{CharHead|Mii Gunner|SSBU}}||Lunar Launch||⭐⭐||Meh. It'd be cooler if the projectile had actual utility beyond "it does some damage", otherwise it feels like an entirely recovery-oriented up B which is already the purpose of Arm Rocket.
|-
|{{GameIcon|ssbu}} Cannon Jump Kick<br>{{GameIcon|ssb4}} Cannon Uppercut||⭐⭐⭐||Not exactly my preferred choice, but the tradeoff is pretty well executed here; a worse recovery in exchange for a cool spike allowing for risky but rewarding early kills.
|-
|Arm Rocket||⭐⭐||Nice now that you can change the trajectory mid-flight, but could still maybe have some more sauce.
|-
|{{CharHead|Palutena|SSBU}}||Warp||⭐⭐||Just Teleport again. Meh.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pac-Man|SSBU}}||Pac-Jump||⭐⭐⭐⭐||I like this one. May come across as yet another trampoline recovery, but it's made a lot better by its successively higher jump gimmick and having an actual hitbox affected by it. Also putting others in helplessness is funny.
|-
|{{CharHead|Robin|SSBU}}||Elwind||⭐⭐⭐||Would be lower, but the first hit's spike is sick and gives it actual offensive utility.
|-
|{{CharHead|Shulk|SSBU}}||Air Slash||⭐⭐⭐||I think there's not much purpose to ''not'' using the second slash, but aside from that I like it, and it's nice that Jump Art actually affects its height.
|-
|{{CharHead|Bowser Jr.|SSBU}}||Abandon Ship!||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Sucks that getting hit out of this move gives you no second chance to recover, but aside from that it's pretty creative and unique. Setting up into the clown car explosion or following up a juggle with the surprisingly strong hammer attack are fun.
|-
|{{CharHead|Duck Hunt|SSBU}}||Duck Jump||⭐||Possibly the most boring recovery in the series. Even with Ult adding that dodge/attack cancel, it's so slow that you're still practically deadweight when you use it.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ryu|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Ken|SSBU}}||Shoryuken||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Could not be any other up B for them, a certified hood classic even if I'm not a fan of how their kill setups are overcentralized around it (why is the heavy input version so ridiculously strong). This time I like Ken's version more, even if it can suffer from multi-hit syndrome.
|-
|{{CharHead|Cloud|SSBU}}||Climhazzard||⭐⭐⭐||Basically a faster but simpler Aether, it's good enough as its purpose and I like that Limit makes it more distinct (becoming a vertical kill move instead, and having you choose whether to save it or not if you have to recover). Like with that move though, the cheesy spike kills gotta go.
|-
|{{CharHead|Corrin|SSBU}}||Dragon Ascent||⭐⭐⭐||It's alright. Not much else to say when you've already seen this kind of move over and over.
|-
|{{CharHead|Bayonetta|SSBU}}||Witch Twist||⭐⭐⭐||More basic and not as fun in comparison to her side Bs, but still a nice extension to her combos, and it's cool to use those double-jump-extended Witch Twists that people kept thinking were a glitch.
|-
|{{CharHead|Inkling|SSBU}}||Super Jump||⭐⭐||Eh, it feels way too good and safe of a recovery with little counterplay, and I don't like how it gets to cheat by still inking you without using any ink.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ridley|SSBU}}||Wing Blitz||⭐⭐||Easily Ridley's lamest special, it's generally a worse, less fun to use Fire Fox aside from the down-angled version's spike, in a way that it unnecessarily stifles Ridley's recovery too hard. Remember how before patches it covered even less distance?
|-
|{{CharHead|Simon|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Richter|SSBU}}||Uppercut||⭐⭐||Props for being their one non-Classicvania special, but compared to the dozen other up Bs of its archetype, it feels like it's worse at everything (distance, OoS utility, kill power) with no real distinction.
|-
|{{CharHead|King K. Rool|SSBU}}||Propellerpack||⭐⭐⭐||Nice recovery that is surprisingly good for a superheavy, and can also sort of drag opponents to the top blast line.
|-
|{{CharHead|Incineroar|SSBU}}||Cross Chop||⭐⭐⭐||Pretty creative take on both the Pokemon move and the typical up-and-down recovery, especially with not actually causing helplessness. I like it.
|-
|{{CharHead|Piranha Plant|SSBU}}||Piranhacopter||⭐⭐⭐||lmao bye
|-
|rowspan=2|{{CharHead|Joker|SSBU}}||Grappling Hook||⭐⭐⭐||Would be lower if it was just a bog-standard tether recovery (boring), but the grounded hit grab gives it pretty nice and somewhat underrated utility.
|-
|Wings of Rebellion||⭐||Rating these separately because they're completely different, and yeahhhhh I don't like this one. It's just Power of Flight again (zzzz) and barely feels like a direct upgrade over Grappling Hook.
|-
|{{CharHead|Hero|SSBU}}||Woosh||⭐⭐⭐||Not as fun as Frizz or Zap, but still made a lot cooler than other recoveries by its three variations.
|-
|{{CharHead|Banjo & Kazooie|SSBU}}||Shock Spring Jump||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Pretty much another Spring Jump, so some may not find it that interesting, but it was the best and most faithful choice for them as a recovery.
|-
|{{CharHead|Terry|SSBU}}||Rising Tackle||⭐⭐⭐⭐||At first glance it just looks like yet another multi-hit recovery, but the fighting game style charge gives it a lot more sauce and is a really cool addition to Smash.
|-
|{{CharHead|Byleth|SSBU}}||Sword of the Creator||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Pretty much where all the Byleth sauce went. May be a bit overtuned as a recovery, but the sword hit grab is so fun to mess with.
|-
|{{CharHead|Min Min|SSBU}}||ARMS Jump<br>ARMS Hook||⭐⭐||2 stars only because of ARMS Jump, which would at least be interesting as a hitboxless but quick move to cover space and recover with, but because Min Min can't have anything entertaining it turns into a generic tether in the air. Don't you think two in the DLC were already enough?
|-
|{{CharHead|Steve|SSBU}}||Elytra||⭐⭐⭐||I like that they brought back Brawl gliding in some capacity. Aside from that I don't have much to say.
|-
|rowspan=2|{{CharHead|Sephiroth|SSBU}}||Blade Dash||⭐⭐||I find it kind of lame, it's versatile but rather basic as a recovery and really feels like it could have at least some more offensive potential.
|-
|Octaslash||⭐⭐⭐⭐||This one slaps though. It may have absurd ending/landing lag, but it's just so fun to land and kill with.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pyra|SSBU}}||Prominence Revolt||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Cool ass name btw. May be yet another up-and-down recovery, but the eruption and its higher kill power make it a lot more fun.
|-
|{{CharHead|Mythra|SSBU}}||Ray of Punishment<br>Chroma Dust||⭐⭐⭐||Certainly not as powerful but still pretty unique in offensive application. Not sure why Mythra is privileged with two variations, but it's alright.
|-
|{{CharHead|Kazuya|SSBU}}||Devil Wings||⭐⭐⭐||May be basic, but at least it doesn't cause helplessness, and I actually don't mind its strong initial hit? It's not that fast OoS (frame 12) and I think it's fine for its high endlag and Kazuya's otherwise weak aerial presence. (This is the same game with G&W's up B after all)
|-
|{{CharHead|Sora|SSBU}}||Aerial Sweep||⭐⭐⭐||Would be lame if it was just another (aerial) Spin Attack, but they made it kill vertically instead, which is distinct enough to make it more fun.

|{{CharHead|Pit|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssbb}} Wings of Icarus||⭐⭐⭐||Considerably more interesting and unique as a recovery due to being controllable and cancelable, and strange that it got ditched for a much more generic one, but you do you, Pit.
|-
|{{CharHead|Zero Suit Samus|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssbb}} Plasma Wire||🚮||Oh no, we really need to commit to this version of a character with none of her cool abilities but we can't think of an actual moveset, oh god oh fuck!

I'd probably be down to seeing this on Ult Palutena in exchange for some nerfs, just because Warp is so boring and generic by comparison.
|-
|{{GameIcon|ssb4}} Rocket Jump||⭐⭐||Pretty much Cannon Jump Kick, but on a character that already has a better spike and edgeguarding abilities in general, so it's comparatively a worse choice.

|{{CharHead|Mario|SSBU}}||F.L.U.D.D.||⭐⭐||I honestly don't get the appeal of no-damage windbox-only specials. What do you even use them for? ''Maybe'' cucking a bad recovery every once and then? ''Maybe'' pushing away the opponent... just to delay neutral for no apparent benefit? ''Maybe'' attempt a niche but actually hype team setup? Idk, F.L.U.D.D. is one of those moves I charge and then only use like 10% of the time because there's barely situations where it truly feels worth using.
|-
|{{CharHead|Donkey Kong|SSBU}}||Hand Slap||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Banger. Also known as the Multi-Man move, but now much more viable in competitive play, and the aerial version slaps too.
|-
|{{CharHead|Link|SSBU}}||Remote Bomb||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Link's own certified C4 with plenty of fun and creative uses, good stuff.
|-
|{{CharHead|Samus|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Dark Samus|SSBU}}||Bomb||⭐⭐⭐||Better now that the bombs explode on contact (in Smash 4 they inexplicably didn't), and bomb jumps are fun, but aside from that it's just there.
|-
|{{CharHead|Yoshi|SSBU}}||{{GameIcon|ssb}} Hip Drop<br>{{GameIcon|ssbm}}{{GameIcon|ssbb}}{{GameIcon|ssb4}}{{GameIcon|ssbu}} Yoshi Bomb||⭐⭐⭐||Fun to break shields and kill with, and accurate to the (good) Yoshi games. I like.
|-
|{{CharHead|Kirby|SSBU}}||Stone||⭐⭐⭐||Fun move even if it's not very competitively viable, every Smash player had that casual phase when they abused this move thinking it was the most broken shit ever.
|-
|{{CharHead|Fox|SSBU}}||Reflector||⭐⭐⭐||An ol' reliable. Would be lower if it was just a reflector with a weak insignificant hitbox, but they sort of brought back shine spikes which is neat.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pikachu|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Pichu|SSBU}}||Thunder||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Good stuff, still has aged well in unique applications and utility, but the bolt itself is way weaker than the discharge and kinda sucks. Getting vertical kills with it in 64 and Melee was fun. Also that 0% kill shit with the spike needs to die.
|-
|{{CharHead|Luigi|SSBU}}||Luigi Cyclone||⭐⭐||Actually useful compared to Mario Tornado, but Ult neutered its movement and recovery so much that it's way less fun to use.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ness|SSBU}}||PSI Magnet||⭐⭐⭐||Pretty lame in earlier games, but cool now that it has offensive utility, even if it feels like shine 2.0 in that people use it for everything ''except'' absorbing projectiles.
|-
|{{CharHead|Captain Falcon|SSBU}}||Falcon Kick||⭐⭐⭐||May not be as good as his other specials, but still a classic.
|-
|{{CharHead|Jigglypuff|SSBU}}||Rest||⭐⭐||I'd actually give the Melee version 4 stars because it feels more balanced and harder to abuse: ridiculously strong, yes, but the hitbox is smaller, shorter-lasting, and harder to combo into, Puff often has to eat a punish from the character she killed in return, and it's just so fun to use in the 1P modes. In Ult though, yeah, it really overcentralizes Puff in a bad way.
|-
|{{CharHead|Peach|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Daisy|SSBU}}||Vegetable||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Always fun to mess with, Peach would be considerably worse to play without this move imo (or floating, even if it's busted). Not 5 stars only because RNG can be a bit skewed and being able to throw Bob-ombs without getting yourself hurt now is lame.
|-
|{{CharHead|Bowser|SSBU}}||Bowser Bomb||⭐⭐⭐||Pretty much Yoshi Bomb but better, so same comment here.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ice Climbers|SSBU}}||Blizzard||⭐⭐||A move that I wish they did more with, it's more interesting on paper than Ice Shot or Belay, but it's ultimately a situational damage racker with a freeze effect that is barely taken advantage of. I guess it's used as part of those convoluted rocket science 0 to deaths, but who cares.
|-
|{{CharHead|Sheik|SSBU}}||Bouncing Fish||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||Total banger, single-handedly made post-Smash 4 Sheik a lot more fun. Cool combo finisher and also a kill move you have to set up into instead of easily being able to throw out, while doubling as a disadvantage and recovery option that isn't unpunishable like Flip Jump. I love it.
|-
|{{CharHead|Zelda|SSBU}}||Phantom Slash||⭐⭐⭐||I think Zelda being so overcentralized around this move is more a fault of her poor mobility and wimpy normals leading her to rely on it as a crutch, but aside from that I think it's nicely designed, especially compared to the awful Smash 4 version nobody ever got hit by. Would be higher if there was more direct punishment (reward for the opponent) for killing the phantom, and if earlier stages were more useful so the fully-assembled slash doesn't feel like it carries the whole move.
|-
|{{CharHead|Dr. Mario|SSBU}}||Dr. Tornado||⭐⭐⭐||Better Luigi Cyclone, actually pretty fun as a combo finisher, kill move, and recovery aid, but still a fairly basic move.
|-
|{{CharHead|Falco|SSBU}}||Reflector||⭐⭐⭐||Cute take on a reflector and nice way to give it more offensive utility, but still not exactly a moveset seller.
|-
|{{CharHead|Marth|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Lucina|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Roy|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Chrom|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Ike|SSBU}}||Counter||⭐⭐⭐||The one that started it all; it's good as its intended purpose, I guess. Same rating for all because slightly different frame data and multipliers ultimately don't change much, though Ike could definitely use a new special.
|-
|{{CharHead|Young Link|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Toon Link|SSBU}}||Bomb||⭐⭐⭐⭐||May not be Remote Bomb, but still a pretty nice and versatile item to play around with, combos into imagination go hard.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ganondorf|SSBU}}||Wizard's Foot||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Better than Falcon Kick due to being stronger and on a heavyweight that benefits more from it, and I love the aerial version's absurdly strong spike. Non-Falcondorf fan movesets should keep this move or at least a close approximation of it imo.
|-
|{{CharHead|Mewtwo|SSBU}}||Disable||⭐⭐||Never been too in love with this one, the hitbox is so hard to land that it ultimately feels like too much setup, just for a brief stun to lead to a punish, when you might as well have fished for that punish normally. Its application in Smash 4 footstool combos was hype but that's about it.
|-
|{{CharHead|Mr. Game & Watch|SSBU}}||Oil Panic||⭐⭐⭐||I'd like it more if you had an option to release a weaker, non-full bucket, so it doesn't feel like it's only useful against strong projectiles or camp-heavy characters, but aside from that I like its concept, and the oil effect is funny for screenshots.
|-
|{{CharHead|Meta Knight|SSBU}}||Dimensional Cape||⭐⭐||Eh, this one feels like the most filler out of MK's specials to me and a noob move you're hardly gonna hit any competent player with, while simultaneously outclassed in both kill power and recovery by his other specials.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pit|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Dark Pit|SSBU}}||Guardian Orbitars||⭐⭐⭐||Decent defensive move after it was buffed to be much faster, even if it's fairly basic. Still much better than if it was exclusively a reflector though.
|-
|{{CharHead|Zero Suit Samus|SSBU}}||Flip Jump||🚮||Rant incoming!<br>This is one of the most undeserving, most braindead, most poorly designed moves in the entire series. Out of disadvantage it's absurdly fast, covers so much space, has so little ending lag, no landing lag, and even gets intangibility slapped on it, so it is completely unpunishable and gives ZSS, already a character with a weird neutral she spends flopping around until she can hit you with a few overtuned moves, a ridiculously powerful defensive tool that takes no skill or risk at all to use. This alone makes it a contender for one of the stupidest special moves conceived, but on top of that it has privileged offensive use as well, letting you throw out a kick at any time with a spike sweetspot that kills ridiculously early and can be comboed into, and even if you don't land it, a "sourspot" that kills ridiculously early anyway. But you don't even need that, because the jump itself also gives you an automatic footstool that buries and gives you kill setups for free, just in case landing the nuclear kick was too hard for you, and even had to be nerfed in a patch!<br>By comparison, Bouncing Fish has no intangibility, must always commit to its attack (which has high landing lag and can be shielded, so it can be reasonably punished), has no spike or bury cheese, and has lower but still respectable kill power to encourage setting up into it, as a more valuable and better fitting tool for a character otherwise designed to have very fast and cohesive moves but terrible kill power. Similarly, Feint Jump (the Mii version) has considerable landing lag even if you don't throw out the kick, the kick gives you a boost forward instead of spiking, burying, or killing so early, and in Ultimate the move has more ending lag, so it's a very useful mixup and disadvantage tool but still one with reasonable counterplay. Flip Jump is just an asspull move for a bland, asspull character, made as braindead as it is to give people an excuse to play Zero Suit Samus. Pick a real character, like Ridley.
|-
|{{CharHead|Wario|SSBU}}||Wario Waft||⭐⭐⭐||Admittedly kind of a guilty pleasure. Regarding gameplay: a passively-charging attack is a nice and unique tool, and the 4 stages are fairly balanced, with the first one being basically a joke move for fun and directly discouraging its spam, and the last one being really powerful to make it count. Really the only problem is the full charge lasting forever; give it a timeout mechanic like Cloud's Limit and it'd definitely be 4 stars for me. Regarding aesthetics: I don't mind crude humor, I think it's funny to have farts/gross humor as a goofy element for a fighting game, and Wario makes sense as a choice for it; I don't get why out of everything to Wario Landify, people always pick this move first (even PM with its pretty Wario Landified moveset kept it). Also Wario being able to SD with it is hilarious.
|-
|{{CharHead|Snake|SSBU}}||C4||⭐⭐⭐⭐||C 4 stars. Always been my favorite move in Snake's kit, quite powerful and easy to set up wherever you want, while it also damages Snake and he has to actively detonate it so it's not just a trap that rewards him for free. C4 sticking is also a nice bonus for managing to get up close with it.
|-
|{{CharHead|Diddy Kong|SSBU}}||Banana Peel||⭐⭐||Eh. It defines Diddy and all, but it's ultimately just him pulling an item, and I never found Diddy in Smash that interesting. Whatever.
|-
|{{CharHead|Lucas|SSBU}}||PSI Magnet||⭐⭐⭐||Release hitbox is cool and surprisingly strong, but feels outclassed by Ness' quicker and constantly active version, while in terms of absorbing projectiles it's pretty much the same.
|-
|{{CharHead|Sonic|SSBU}}||Spin Charge||🚮||I sleep. Next.
|-
|{{CharHead|King Dedede|SSBU}}||Jet Hammer||⭐⭐⭐||Kirby's chud Hammer vs this is you vs the guy she tells you not to worry about. An all-out move actually deserving of its status, with actual range and armor regardless of charge level that gives it applications beyond casual bait.
|-
|{{CharHead|Olimar|SSBU}}||Pikmin Order||⭐||Why waste an entire moveslot just for the primary purpose of recalling/reordering your Pikmin, which could be done by, well, the same move you use to pluck Pikmin and then has no use until you lose them? The super armor is dumb and clearly just an excuse to give it utility beyond recalling Pikmin, so instead you can have a panic button that you spam hoping it works. Ugly.
|-
|{{CharHead|Lucario|SSBU}}||Double Team||⭐||Yuck. Always found this the most boring and unnecessary counter, with only Substitute and Toad as not-quite-close contenders, and based on a stupid Pokemon move that just serves to be annoying with no strategy. Why even have a counter that doesn't scale with damage?? Lucario definitely needs a moveset revision.
|-
|{{CharHead|R.O.B.|SSBU}}||Gyro||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||I'm definitely not big brain enough for all the cool ass setups this move has, but still giving it 5 stars. For being the only move with actual basis on the real life R.O.B., they really nailed it.
|-
|{{CharHead|Wolf|SSBU}}||Reflector||⭐⭐||I'd so give this 3 stars if it didn't constantly feel so situational. Reflecting projectiles isn't much of a factor when Wolf has good enough mobility and hitboxes to get around them naturally, and the shine hitbox combos barely feel more rewarding than just using his aerials or throws. Sadge.
|-
|{{CharHead|Villager|SSBU}}||Timber||⭐⭐⭐⭐||I generally find Villager's moveset boring (and Isabelle's, and Animal Crossing as a series in general), but this is a rare case of an actually super fun move in his kit. Takes a fair amount of setup for that tree but it's really satisfying to use afterward, and it's nice that the water spray and axe have utility beyond just hitting the seed/tree, while the tree being hittable by opponents means Villager can't sit effortlessly on it either. The woodchip item is also cute but I wish it didn't rely entirely on chance.
|-
|{{CharHead|Mega Man|SSBU}}||Leaf Shield||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Was pretty lame in Smash 4 and Ultimate made it so much more fun, even if you can't grab out of it anymore. Much like the Mega Man 2 weapon, it's a surprisingly good close range option that gives Mega Man more incentive to use his full kit instead of just playing keepaway with lemons.
|-
|{{CharHead|Wii Fit Trainer|SSBU}}||Deep Breathing||⭐⭐⭐||Maybe a bit basic, but idk, I like stat boosting specials, and this one at least has an action command and anti-overuse mechanic, unlike a lamer one that's coming later.
|-
|{{CharHead|Rosalina & Luma|SSBU}}||Gravitational Pull||⭐⭐⭐||Rather boring in competitive 1v1 where it's just a no u button against specific characters while being deadweight against others, but fun in casual matches to drag items to you.
|-
|{{CharHead|Little Mac|SSBU}}||Slip Counter||⭐⭐||I guess the attack's distance helps for recovery if Little Mac even manages to counter an attack while recovering I guess, but aside from that it's really just a bog standard counter, something this game really loved to add.
|-
|{{CharHead|Greninja|SSBU}}||Substitute||⭐||Copypaste counter, a disgrace to how the much cooler Pokemon move actually works, and the different attack angles are such a tryhard attempt to give it sauce. It sucks. Greninja could be even cooler than it already is, but instead they slap this copypaste and barely functional move on it.
|-
|rowspan=3|{{CharHead|Mii Brawler|SSBU}}||Head-On Assault||⭐||It's not ''useless'', but still a boring filler special. Into the trash it goes.
|-
|Feint Jump||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||This, however? Peak. Flip Jump is a fun move when actually designed to not be a cheat button. Disadvantage option and recovery extension that still takes skill to use without getting punished, and the kicks give it a good enough mixup and offensive power that isn't "heehoo I kill you at 40%" or "heehoo mash or die". The footstool attack is rather pointless, but not really needed to make it a good move anyway. I love it, even if it's the only Brawler down B that exists.
|-
|Counter Throw||⭐⭐||It's more unique in ''concept'', but ultimately has the same application as every standard counter but with weird handicaps.
|-
|rowspan=3|{{CharHead|Mii Swordfighter|SSBU}}||Blade Counter||⭐⭐||I'll say that, for a character you can create to your liking, it makes sense to have a simple and familiar counter, but it still has room for improvement and more uniqueness. Since it launches upward now, maybe make it more combo-oriented so it doesn't feel worse than other counters for no benefit?
|-
|Power Thrust||⭐⭐⭐||It may be technically just Falcon Kick, but I admit I don't mind it. Sworder and Falcon are pretty different characters, so it's much less blatant than Gale Stab or Hero's Spin.
|-
|Reversal Slash||⭐||Boring. Fills a purpose, but still boring.
|-
|rowspan=3|{{CharHead|Mii Gunner|SSBU}}||Echo Reflector||rowspan=2|⭐||rowspan=2|Ranked together because both are blatant copypastes that are also substantially worse than the originals, on top of being more matchup-specific, but it especially sucks that they take up different moveslots when they overlap so much. Instead of the minor difference of "hmmm do I suck projectile or do I return projectile" why not lump them together into one move and leave room for another cool down B option?
|-
|Absorbing Vortex
|-
|Bomb Drop||⭐⭐⭐||Had pretty much no competition considering the other options, but it's still fun and feels unique enough.
|-
|{{CharHead|Palutena|SSBU}}||Counter<br>Reflect Barrier||⭐⭐||2 stars only because the merge with Reflect Barrier at least gives it something different, aside from that it's as boring and generic as it sounds and it's no surprise Palutena players keep forgetting it even exists.
|-
|{{CharHead|Pac-Man|SSBU}}||Fire Hydrant||⭐⭐⭐⭐||No Fire Hydrant disrespect in this house. Fun to drop on enemies, fun to passively push yourself and others with, fun to knock away at enemies for a kill or to attack Pac-Man himself with, only one at a time keeps it big-brained, and more fun than any generic Pac-Man World special could ever be.
|-
|{{CharHead|Robin|SSBU}}||Nosferatu||⭐⭐⭐||Really cool in concept, but I feel the healing isn't very rewarding for how hard to land the move is and how quickly the tome is consumed. At least it's an easy way to get a tome item though.
|-
|{{CharHead|Shulk|SSBU}}||Vision||⭐⭐⭐||This one I don't mind too much as a counter since there isn't a much better way to represent Xenoblade visions (even if they're annoying there), and at least it has that uniquely long counter window that decreases with overuse (and I guess the unique forward attack that launches backward).
|-
|{{CharHead|Bowser Jr.|SSBU}}||Mechakoopa||⭐⭐⭐||Nice as another item special but not much else, at least compared to his cooler side and up Bs.

|{{CharHead|Duck Hunt|SSBU}}||Wild Gunman||⭐⭐⭐||It's alright I guess? References something other than Duck Hunt at least and all the gunmen with different properties add enough personality to it.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ryu|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Ken|SSBU}}||Focus Attack||⭐⭐⭐||I hate having to do a double tap to cancel it (sucks to do with Smash's analog sticks instead of fightsticks), but it's overall a pretty nice addition.
|-
|rowspan=2|{{CharHead|Cloud|SSBU}}||Limit Charge||⭐⭐||Probably another hot take: Limit Charge is lame as fuck. Limit fills up by dealing or taking damage, which is accurate to FF7 ''and'' encourages direct interaction with your opponent, while also serving as a sort of comeback mechanic balanced out by its single use per Limit Break. But whoops this move exists so you can instead charge it effortlessly at any time the opponent isn't right next to you, which is a good portion of the match. What's the point of the whole gauge fill if so often you can just have a nearly full gauge? And they tried to balance it by having Cloud lose gauge if he's hit out of the charge, but then the charge is so easy to cancel that it's pointless. Wouldn't it be nice if Limit Charge worked more like Deep Breathing, which needs a timed input, and only gave you a portion of the gauge, so you have to work for the rest of it yourself, instead of effortlessly pressing down B for 75% of the match to shit out gauge fills? This feels like something they slapped onto Smash 4 Cloud because as DLC he needed to be powerful and effortless to use, then after they made him take more braincells to use in Ultimate we were still stuck with this. Stupid.
|-
|Finishing Touch||⭐⭐⭐⭐||This, on the other hand? Banger. It's basically KO Uppercut but much less polarized and that is cool. The strongest Limit special, that is weaker in the air but also feels so satisfying to combo into, and kind of unfairly overshadowed by Limit Cross Slash.
|-
|{{CharHead|Corrin|SSBU}}||Counter Surge||⭐⭐||Yeah yeah it hits at both sides, yeah yeah it launches upward, but it ultimately still has the exact same applications as a typical counter, so it's not unique. It's in fact worse because it can't be used for edgeguarding! At this point it feels like they just gave up on designing down specials.
|-
|{{CharHead|Bayonetta|SSBU}}||Witch Time||⭐⭐⭐⭐||There we go, a counter that is actually unique! May not be remembered fondly because of how busted it was in Smash 4, but it's nicely balanced with its cooldown and percent based duration, allows for much more creative punishes, and is accurate to the Bayonetta games. Also fun to slow down multiple people around you in FFAs.
|-
|{{CharHead|Inkling|SSBU}}||Splat Bomb||⭐⭐⭐||Maybe not a particularly cool-looking special, but it fills its purpose well enough at least.
|-
|{{CharHead|Ridley|SSBU}}||Skewer||⭐⭐⭐||I love how they gave Ridley a dedicated fuck you move for pure flexing, but I'd rate it higher if they fully committed to it. The tip should definitely break shields and be able to work without that weird hit grab, it's already hard to land and the sourspot is so weak it practically doesn't exist.
|-
|{{CharHead|Simon|SSBU}}<br>{{CharHead|Richter|SSBU}}||Holy Water||⭐⭐⭐||Doesn't feel as good to use as Axe and Cross, and overlaps more with Arcfire/PK Fire, but it's still fun, and accurate to Castlevania as a stationary damage-focused attack that lets you stack up other attacks, which it pulls off quite well. Making it a grabbable item feels unnecessary, but it's whatever.
|-
|{{CharHead|King K. Rool|SSBU}}||Gut Check||⭐||It reflects projectiles and I guess it has that unique property of being reversible so you can launch people the other way, but it's still a boring copypaste counter with boring copypaste application.
|-
|{{CharHead|Isabelle|SSBU}}||Lloid Trap||⭐⭐||Eh. I'd like this one more if it didn't promote so much boring play of setting it up and waiting for you to run into it so you can get cutscene'd. Snake's C4 is cool exactly because he has to commit to it; leaving it around is a threat not because of a constantly active hitbox, but because you have to watch out for Snake and his opportunities to set it off. Lloid Trap gets rid of that and feels much more like an automated passive hitbox, while also not leading as well into direct kills. And yes, I know you can deactivate it, but then Isabelle can just run away and place it elsewhere. Blegh. Boring character.
|-
|{{CharHead|Incineroar|SSBU}}||Revenge||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||All hail the best counter in the series. Instead of a bog standard automated punish that is functionally the same for almost every counter, why not punish with whatever the fuck you want? And have an actual answer to projectiles as well? I love it, it's a major part of what makes Incineroar so fun.
|-
|{{CharHead|Piranha Plant|SSBU}}||Long-Stem Strike||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Another deceptively creative and useful special for how generic it looks at first, it always impresses me what Plant players can pull off with it. Also hitting Plant from the other side of the stage is hilarious.
|-
|rowspan=2|{{CharHead|Joker|SSBU}}||Rebel's Guard||⭐⭐⭐⭐||The cooler Limit Charge. If you think about it, they're the opposite: Cloud's Limit itself is cool but Limit Charge is lame, while Joker's Rebel Gauge only filling passively and his overreliance on Arsene is lame, but this is a much cooler way of filling it up, because it involves direct interaction and knowledge of your opponent. Give it that same Limit Charge mechanic of losing gauge if you punish its endlag or grab Joker out of it, and I think it'd be perfect.
|-
|Tetrakarn<br>Makarakarn||⭐⭐||I guess it makes sense as an upgrade to Rebel's Guard which is ultimately also a counter, but eh, this one ''is'' just a bog standard counter except busted, so substantially way less cool.
|-
|rowspan=16|{{CharHead|Hero|SSBU}}||Sizz<br>Sizzle||⭐⭐||Cute, but kind of unremarkable when Frizz is generally a lot better and you can use it at any time.
|-
|Bang<br>Kaboom||⭐⭐⭐||Now these ones have plenty of sauce.
|-
|Snooze||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Sing but good, and the closest we have to Snake's tranq gun from PM in actual Smash. I like it.
|-
|Flame Slash||⭐⭐⭐||It's alright. Huge and feels good to land, which nicely balances out how long it takes to pick.
|-
|Kacrackle Slash||⭐⭐⭐||Unique, but not really a lot else you do with it.
|-
|Metal Slash||⭐||Poor Metal Slash. You exist only for an extremely niche situation that is nonexistent in competitive play (except if another Hero uses Kaclang, I guess) and still rare in casual play, and you get actively nerfed in spirit battles where you could be useful. Pour one out for Metal Slash.
|-
|Hatchet Man||⭐⭐⭐||Flashy and I like that it can break shields to give it an advantage over his critical smashes, but not as good as the ''other'' over-the-top move.
|-
|Whack<br>Thwack||⭐⭐⭐||''Extremely'' overhated moves, I think they're fine in a kit that's supposed to be silly and unpredictable anyway. An instant KO chance being random is not exactly good design, but they're still quite committal and reactionable moves, so it's entirely your fault if you get hit by them in the first place.
|-
|Magic Burst||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Moves that actually reward you for managing your resources and turn them into a direct advantage? Banger.
|-
|Kamikazee||⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐||It's just so fucking silly. You earned it.
|-
|Psyche Up<br>Oomph<br>Acceleratle||⭐⭐⭐⭐||Ranked together because they're all stat boosters with similar purposes, and well, what can I say, I love stat boost moves.
|-
|Kaclang||⭐||Can do something if you use it above someone, I guess, but yeah. Deadweight move.
|-
|Bounce||⭐⭐⭐||Also extremely overhated, even if you're Mega Man or something you're well capable of directly approaching Hero, famously not a particularly fast character. If you gave this to someone like Captain Falcon it'd be a different story.
|-
|Heal||⭐⭐||Cool in concept, but would be ranked higher if the healing was more significant; it's already limited in uses and shaves off a paltry 11% that you'll get right back with any stray aerial.
|-
|Zoom||⭐⭐⭐||Points for silliness.
|-
|Hocus Pocus||⭐⭐||Points docked because of how degen some of its effects are in competitive play, but aside from that, funny to play stupid games and win stupid prizes.
|-
|{{CharHead|Banjo & Kazooie|SSBU}}||Rear Egg||⭐⭐⭐||I really like this move, but I'd rate it higher if it wasn't so much of a crutch they overrely on. Ass Egg
|-
|{{CharHead|Terry|SSBU}}||Power Dunk||⭐⭐⭐||As with Burning Knuckle, I guess it's alright. The spike is cool, and the braindead jab cancel does make it much lamer, but that's not a problem with Power Dunk itself.
|-
|{{CharHead|Byleth|SSBU}}||Aymr||⭐||Bleh. I think Falcon Punch works as the iconic super polarized punish move because of its circumstances: it was put in a character almost nobody knew before Smash and had basically a made the fuck up moveset, but was so cool, fitting, and over the
