Article on Bulbapedia Lucario (Pokémon)

Lucario (ルカリオ, Lucario) is a fictional creature from the Pokémon series, appearing as the main representative of the fourth generation of the Pokémon series in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Character description

Lucario is a bipedal, canine-like Pokémon that is 3'11" in height and is generally agreed to resemble the Egyptian deity Anubis. Lucario is a dual Fighting and Steel-type type Pokémon that evolves from Riolu; in the Pokémon RPGs, Riolu evolves when it gains a level while its friendship rating has achieved a high-enough point, and only during morning, daytime, and afternoon hours. Lucario is able to detect and wield an energy named aura, a sort of force that surrounds every living thing. According to the Pokédex, by picking up on the aura emanating from others, it can read their thoughts and movements, and a well-trained individual can sense and take in the feelings of creatures over half a mile away. It understands human speech and can even communicate telepathically in human languages. In Generation VI, Lucario was among a handful of Pokémon that gained access to a new transformation called Mega Evolution. In-game, if a Lucario is holding a Lucarionite, it can Mega Evolve into Mega Lucario. Lucario also has more significance to the plot when compared to other Pokémon, as it is the first Pokémon the player initiates Mega Evolution with.

Lucario is unique in that the more damage it takes, the more damage, range, and knockback its own attacks have (based on the actual ability of most Lucario in the Pokémon series). This only applies to its aura-powered attacks, which are noted by bluish, flame-like wisps. A few of Lucario's attacks don't use aura, such as its dash attack and back throw, among others. This trait makes it not particularly useful at the beginning of a stock, but by surviving to a high damage level, it becomes ridiculously deadly. It possesses the ability to both wall jump and wall cling; its wall jump in particular is by far the highest in the game, and the height gained by this is based on the Aura system.

Its neutral special attack is a chargeable ranged blast comparable to Samus's Charge Shot. Its side special is a short range blast, or at point blank, a throw. Its up special is a non-damaging recovery move, it will move in any direction pressed. Its down special is a counterattack, that is, it will harm a character who tries to attack it within a brief time period. It is an aura-powered counter, and its damage caps at about 15%. Lucario also has a similar moving style to Mewtwo, from Melee, resulting in rumors that it "replaced" Mewtwo.

Lucario is currently ranked 11th on the tier list, in C+ tier.

Lucario

An Aura Pokémon. It can track energy called Aura, which is given off by all living creatures. It's a unique combination of both Fighting and Steel-type Pokémon. Lucario evolves from Riolu during the day if its happiness has reached its maximum point. It specializes in attacks that use Aura energy, like Dark Pulse and a can't-miss technique, Aura Sphere.

Main article: Lucario (SSB4)

Lucario returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. Physically, it has been updated to have its proportions more akin to its appearances in Pokémon X and Y. Lucario's Mega Evolution into Mega Lucario replaces Aura Storm as its Final Smash.

Sean Schemmel, Lucario's voice actor from the film Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, confirmed May 30th that he would be reprising his role as Lucario in the game.

Lucario's SSB4 tier list rank is 23rd out of 56, placing it in D tier. Lucario's aura became stronger in the transition from Brawl to SSB4, with the new rage mechanic amplifying it even further. As a result, it has the potential to KO at early percentages when its own damage percentage is high. However, Lucario received some nerfs as well. Its smash attacks in particular are slower, and Force Palm, neutral, forward and down aerials have lost some of their combo potential. Lucario's Extreme Speed also saw a large increase in ending lag if it ends in the air, leaving Lucario highly open to punishment upon landing on the ground. Regardless of the nerfs, Lucario is still seen as a decent choice for competitive play, earning decent tournament representation.

Trivia

  • Like Charizard in Super Smash Bros. 4 and Mewtwo, Lucario draws inspiration from a particular member of its species depicted in the Pokémon anime. In Lucario's case, it is largely based on Sir Aaron's Lucario from Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. Like Sir Aaron's, it can speak the human language telepathically and, as of SSB4, it is voiced by Sean Schemmel and Daisuke Namikawa in English and Japanese, respectively.
    • Another trait Lucario shares with Sir Aaron's is that it is technically male due to Schemmel and Namikawa depicting it as such. However, it is not listed under a specific gender per Nintendo's stance on using gender neutral pronouns for all Pokémon, regardless of a species' gender ratio or lack thereof.
  • Lucario possesses the best wall jump and wall cling durability in the Super Smash Bros. series.
    • It is also the only character who can activate wall clinging through its up special.
  • Lucario is the only playable Pokémon to have a weakness to one of its own types.
  • Jean-Marc Delhausse and Carlos Lobo, the French and Spanish voice actors for Lucario, also voice the announcer, Master Hand and Crazy Hand in their respective dubs.
  • Lucario is the only playable Pokémon that speaks in all international versions.
  • Lucario's aura mechanic functions identically to Reversal, an attack that has more base power the less HP the user has. While Lucario can learn Reversal, it can only do so as a Riolu at level 29 as of Pokémon Black 2 and White 2.
