Kansai 2016 (or 9th Kansai) was a national Super Smash Bros. tournament held in the Kansai region of Japan. There were 50 entrants, and Top 8 was streamed live on Nico Nico. Due to Japanese customs/rules, there was no prize fund.

Kansai 2016 used a similar tournament format as at Kansai 2015: there were 7 Round-Robin pools. Top 4 players in a pool advanced to a 28 man best-of-1, Double Elimination Bracket, with a best-of-3 Grand Finals. This (as with Kansai 2015) was a change from the typical Japanese ruleset of pools into best-of-1, single elimination bracket.

Once again, wario beat Jouske to take first place. This was wario's fourth Japanese national tournament win in a row, and his third win over Jouske.

Revan traveled from Canada to provide some Western representation. He made it out of pools, but lost to Jouske in Winners Round One, and then was eliminated by Hiyo in Losers. In addition to Revan, Mr. Sir, a Samus main, and Andykins, a Fox main from Michigan traveled there from the United States.
