For Glory (ガチ, Serious) is an online mode that appears in Super Smash Bros. 4. During this online mode, players can fight anonymously with other players. All matches are played on Final Destination or on Omega forms of other stages, with no items naturally spawning, and with character customization set to "off". Players can select to play two-stock one-on-one matches with a five minute time limit or two-minute time battles in two-on-two or free-for-all matches. Both wins and losses from matches are recorded in this mode, alongside other statistics.

If a player disconnects during a match in For Glory, his or her character will from then on be controlled by AI set to a low level.

For Fun acts as a counterpart of For Glory in that it forces free-for-alls and items, as well as having a nearly unrestricted stage selection.

For Glory has had heavily mixed reception by the community. Many players appreciate the presence of random matchmaking under competitive rules with items off and on a neutral stage, encouraging relatively balanced matches. Nevertheless, the mode has also been criticized by many players, especially those who play competitively, for encouraging only a small subset of competitive play, with the presence of only Final Destination and Omega forms being over-centralizing towards certain styles of gameplay. The mode has also been criticized for its complete lack of a matchmaking mechanism, where players are paired up at complete random regardless of their records, resulting in players usually being paired up with someone far below or far above their skill level. The mode has additionally been criticized for running time matches instead of the vastly preferred stock matches in its FFA and team modes, and for having team attack off in its team mode.

Shortly after the release of the 3DS version, Yahoo published an article claiming that the character Little Mac was "ruining Super Smash Bros."[1] Most players thought this criticism of Little Mac was overblown, though it was and still is generally agreed that there is a heavy abundance of Little Mac players in For Glory mode. This is seen as a problem for beginners and casuals given Little Mac's advantage in neutral on Omega Stages, which are the only stages accessible in For Glory. For higher-level players, Little Mac's extreme susceptibility to being gimped makes him more of a minor annoyance than a gigantic threat. Furthermore, Little Mac has a significantly low win ratio in online play.[2]

Glitches

  • In version 1.0.1 of the 3DS version of the game, Peach could have potentially triggered an automatic ban for "dishonest play" after plucking a non-Vegetable item via her down special.[3] Nintendo acknowledged the glitch and released an update that fixed this issue.[4]
