Downloadable content, usually abbreviated as DLC, is additional content available to download after the games' launch. DLC was first confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4 in the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza Nintendo Direct, and can be used to add new playable characters, stages, and even new features.

Updates
Updates to the game must be downloaded from the eShop with no extra cost, and usually fix bugs and other errors. Updates 1.0.3 and 1.0.4 adjust game balance, with the latter adjusting many internal things.

- Mewtwo was announced as the very first DLC character in the Super Smash Bros. series during the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza. Mewtwo will be a free download to players who own both versions of SSB4. Besides this information and a teaser model, no information (including attacks and alternate costumes) is known.

- A stage based on the Miiverse application found on Wii U and 3DS consoles, it was confirmed in the 50-Fact Extravaganza that it would be added to the Wii U version of SSB4 sometime after release.
