Downloadable content, usually abbreviated as DLC, is additional content available to download after the initial release of a game. In the Super Smash Bros. series, DLC comes in the form of new characters, stages, music, Mii Fighter costumes, modes, and other extra content, both in purchasable and free forms.

Downloadable content, usually abbreviated as DLC, is additional content available to download after the games' launch. DLC was first confirmed for Super Smash Bros. 4 in the "Super Smash Bros. for Wii U 50-Fact Extravaganza" Nintendo Direct. Downloadable content for the game includes new playable characters, stages, and even new features. Paid content for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U can be found for purchase on the Nintendo eShop, and paid content for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS can be found in an in-game DLC shop.

DLC that has not been purchased in an updated version is still technically installed but locked, and thus can be played with indirectly. Content that hasn't been purchased can been seen in "With Anyone", "With Friends", local Nintendo 3DS Versus, using amiibo as Figure Players (FPs), and replays.
Downloadable content has been made available in two of the Super Smash Bros. games:
*Super Smash Bros. 4
*Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
**For Ultimate spirits
**For spirits with DLC changes

Updates
List of updates (SSB4-3DS)
List of updates (SSB4-Wii U)
Updates to the game can be downloaded at no extra cost. To purchase DLC, the game must be updated to the latest version, which is usually done automatically when starting the game. Certain updates also adjust game balance and mechanics, as well as fix bugs and other errors. Changelogs for all updates can be found with the links above. Nintendo has not released any detailed information with their official changelogs.

Characters
:pokemon Mewtwo SSB4 (April 15th, 2015)
::Melee veteran Mewtwo was announced as the very first DLC character in the Super Smash Bros. series during the forwiiu 50-Fact Extravaganza on October 23rd, 2014. During a Nintendo Direct held on April 1st, 2015, Mewtwo's release date was revealed. On April 15th, 2015, Mewtwo became available as a free download to players who registered both versions of SSB4 on Club Nintendo before March 31st, 2015. As of April 28th, 2015, Mewtwo is currently available for anyone to purchase.

::Brawl veteran Lucas was first confirmed to reappear in Super Smash Bros. 4 as a downloadable character alongside the reveal of Mewtwo's release date, during a Nintendo Direct held on April 1st, 2015. He was released on June 14th, 2015.

:fe Roy SSB4 (June 14th, 2015)
::Melee veteran Roy was leaked as DLC in datamining of the 1.0.6 and 1.0.8 updates. He was officially revealed by Masahiro Sakurai during a Nintendo Direct on June 14th, 2015, and released shortly after on the same day.

:streetfighter Ryu SSB4 (June 14th, 2015)
::Newcomer Ryu from Capcom's Street Fighter series was leaked alongside Roy. Similarly, he was officially revealed by Masahiro Sakurai during a Nintendo Direct on June 14th, 2015 and released shortly after on the same day. Ryu comes as a set with the stage Suzaku Castle.

:finalfantasy Cloud SSB4 (December 15th, 2015)
::Newcomer Cloud Strife from Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII was announced during a Nintendo Direct on November 12th, 2015 and released on December 15th, 2015. Cloud comes as a set with the stage Midgar.

::Newcomer Corrin from Fire Emblem Fates was announced during a Nintendo Direct on December 15th, 2015, and released on February 3rd, 2016. Corrin does not have an exclusive stage, but comes as a set with a music in both versions and with exclusive trophies in the 3DS version and an exclusive music in the Wii U version.

:bayonetta Bayonetta SSB4 (February 3rd, 2016)
::Newcomer Bayonetta from SEGA and PlatinumGames' Bayonetta series was announced during a Nintendo Direct on December 15th, 2015, and released on February 3rd, 2016. Bayonetta comes as a set with the stage Umbra Clock Tower.

In a similar vein to clone characters, DLC characters are recognized by being placed in their own area on the character selection screen, regardless of which franchise they hail from. On the 3DS version, when more than four DLC characters have been purchased and all other characters have been unlocked, the DLC characters are placed on a separate page known as "Extra Fighters".

DLC characters that have not been purchased or otherwise obtained can still be encountered online, and their amiibo can still be used, provided the game is up to date. DLC characters also lack custom moves, the reason for which has not been explained.

Characters
Downloadable characters can be bought for one version at full price or both versions discounted. There are three levels of pricing for characters: veteran characters are the least expensive, the sole Nintendo newcomer is slightly more expensive, and third-party characters are the most expensive (and are each packaged with a stage). Additionally, characters can be bought in bundles, which includes any stage a character was included with. Characters are priced at:

Downloadable content, usually abbreviated as DLC, is additional content available to download after the initial release of a game. Downloadable content has been made available in two of the Super Smash Bros. games:
