The Boomerang is a special move used by Link. In Super Smash Bros., it is his Standard Special Move, while in Super Smash Bros. Melee onward, it is his Smash B move. Also, Young Link has this attack, although the distance and damage are diminished.
The boomerang is a recurring attack used by Link. Just as it sounds, Link throws a boomerang for attack. In Super Smash Bros. it was a fast projectile (if a player looks closely enough, they'll notice that goes from yellow with stripes to glowing blue after it's thrown), but it's much slower in Super Smash Bros. Melee. In both games, the boomerang would try to come back Link after being thrown, which means it could still hit enemies even if they dodged it the first time. The downside is that Link can't use the boomerang until it returns to him. It wouldn't always return to Link, but he could still use it again if it left the screen.

One can tap the control stick while doing this move to increase its range, and tilt the stick up or down to aim it towards those directions. If you dodge the Boomerang as it comes back to you, it will continue going arcing in the direction you dodged in. Link can only have one Boomerang on screen at at time, trying the attack again while a boomerang is out only results in Link doing his boomerang throwing animation without actually throwing anything.

Boomerangs have been a staple weapon since the very first The Legend of Zelda game; while weaker than the Bow, it is reusable and capable of pulling items back to Link.  The design used in Melee is based on its design in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
