'''GENESIS 4''' was the fourth edition of the {{Trn|GENESIS|series}} tournament series. It took place in San Jose, California, from January 20th to 22nd, 2017. The event featured singles and doubles tournaments for ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]'', ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'', and {{forwiiu}}, as well as side events for ''{{iw|wikipedia|Street Fighter V}}'', ''{{iw|wikipedia|Catherine|video game}}'', ''{{iw|wikipedia|Rivals of Aether}}'', and ''{{iw|wikipedia|TowerFall Ascension}}''.

It is currently the fourth-largest ''Melee'' tournament [[List of largest Smash tournaments|of all time]] and the ninth-largest ''Smash 4'' tournament to date.

The event has received criticism for its numerous complications. Before the start of the ''Melee'' event, {{Sm|Hungrybox}} was reseeded from 2nd to 5th due to a finger injury sustained prior to the event, resulting in the three best players at the event - him, {{Sm|Armada}}, and {{Sm|Mango}} - being placed on the same side of the bracket, leading to heavy controversy. In addition, the start of the ''Melee'' Smash Draft was delayed for several hours, while many players such as Armada, {{Sm|Ice}}, and {{Sm|Leffen}} decided to drop out of the side event, lowering its overall level of competition. At one point, power was cut off for the area of the venue designated for ''Smash 4'', while ''Melee'' players continued playing.<ref>https://twitter.com/XzaxSSB/status/823362455397023744</ref> The venue suffered from a frequent loss of Wi-Fi greatly affecting the stream and the other two days of the tournament had their own delayed schedules as well. Unlike many supermajors of 2016, GENESIS 4 was criticized for lacking a side stream for both games, leaving many losers' bracket sets unrecorded.

Another controversy was in regard to the {{forwiiu}} round 2 singles pools, in which the [[tournament organizer]]s made mistakes concerning some matches, such as {{Sm|ESAM}} being pitted against {{Sm|Ito}} instead of {{Sm|DSS}}<ref>https://twitter.com/PG_Zan/status/823349961798496256</ref> and {{Sm|Earth}} against {{Sm|6WX}} instead of {{Sm|SS|p=Arizona}}.<ref>https://twitter.com/PG_juddy96/status/823351049327149056</ref>

Perhaps most notably, it was discovered that the losers' eighths set between {{Sm|komorikiri}} and {{Sm|CaptainZack}}, as well as the set between {{Sm|ZeRo}} and {{Sm|Dabuz}}, were both played with a [[launch rate]] of 0.9. While it remains unclear how the launch rate was changed, many players argue that the competitive integrity of the event has been ruined due to the unusual circumstances of the matches. The [[tournament organizer]]s have faced criticism for failing to check the setups earlier to ensure the proper ruleset, and for forcing komorikiri and CaptainZack to only replay the final game of the set, instead of replaying the entirety of both sets. Furthermore, disgruntled viewers of the tournament would later go on to express their anger about the incident by referring to the tournament as "GENESIS 3.9", and making numerous attacks towards the TOs.
