Rendering an object/character out of a screenshot or video is not "official artwork" and should never be credited as such. This kind of thing can end up as misinformation - for example, [[:File:Wii Fit Trainer Male SSB4.png|an old version of this file]] was used in several instances as "artwork" when in reality it was [[:File:Smash.4 - Wii Fit Trainer - Female and Male.jpg|derived from a screenshot]]. I'm noticing this happening on several other pages as well and, in my opinion, it seriously needs to stop. Hi, I'm a visitor from the Mario Wiki, and as someone pointed out there, this is actually just this Super Smash Bros. for Wii U screenshot from said game's official website, just cropped, rotated, and flipped. Is this particular rendition from an official source or a fan edit? Not sure what this site's policies on that are, but just making sure that's known. 75.104.116.43 23:23, 26 June 2018 (EDT)

Hello. The image in question does not appear particularly likely to be a fan edit. To my knowledge, the image has come from footage, however due to the finite range of colours that appear on the ball, and the fake smash ball's design being a corruption of the original smash ball's design, there are likely to be apparent matches between any given image of a fake smash ball and some image of a smash ball that exists on the internet, which is the most probable cause of this confusion. Additionally, the image you posted possesses a background that doesn't sharply contrast the colour of the ball that well, so removing the background from said image would be exceedingly difficult, which casts further doubt on the claim that the image is an edit of the image you posted.
That being said though, the image currently in use is somewhat of a placeholder until a higher quality image, or artwork, can be obtained. When artwork is available, please feel free to update the image. Alex the Jigglypuff trainer 11:45, 27 June 2018 (EDT)
I would like to point out that I did a test, overlaying this image over the one linked, with a perfect match. That doesn't really change the circumstances of this, but I do find it to be very intriguing. Black Vulpine of the Furry Nation. Furries make the internets go! :3 11:58, 27 June 2018 (EDT)
We do have the same image on this wiki, go figure. But judging by the date it was probably borrowed from the Mario Wiki either way.
To answer your question around policies, it's generally considered bad form to post "edited" versions of pictures/renders on mainspace according to SW:IMG, with few exceptions. If it's deemed this placeholder is an exception and is OK to keep, I don't see a reason to also not use it on the Smash Ball page (flipped/rotated, obviously), at least until and if Ultimate gives us a proper render of the Smash Ball(s). Rendering an object/character out of a screenshot or video is not "official artwork" and should never be credited as such. This kind of thing can end up as misinformation - for example, an old version of this file was used in several instances as "artwork" when in reality it was derived from a screenshot. I'm noticing this happening on several other pages as well and, in my opinion, it seriously needs to stop. Miles (talk) 22:34, 27 June 2018 (EDT)
