Autoconfirmed

Unless it's changed since I became autoconfirmed, you do have to become autoconfirmed to move pages here. I originally joined this wiki with the two purposes of voting in the SA and moving The Flop Block, but I couldn't do the latter while I was not autoconfirmed. Granted, I became autoconfirmed a long time ago, but I've never seen any changes be made to the criteria. If there have been changes, let me know. Toast Wii U Logo Transparent.pngltimatumA transparent image of Swadloon for my sig. 11:21, 31 August 2012 (EDT)

I've could of sworn the move page option was available for my non autoconfirmed test account, but alas, I was mistaken. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 11:26, 31 August 2012 (EDT)

Question

How do you move a page or an image without leaving a redirect? Bandit 08:08, 4 September 2012 (EDT)

There were be a clickable option saying "Leave a redirect behind". If you don't want to leave a redirect, uncheck it. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 08:14, 4 September 2012 (EDT)
For me, there's no option saying "Leave a redirect behind". Is it only accessible to admins, or is there something wrong with my account? Bandit 08:18, 4 September 2012 (EDT)
It was previously accessible to admins only, but as I recall, users were giving that option so admins wouldn't have unnecessary redirects to delete. It seems that has been changed though, as I just checked in with Garo, who does not have that option either. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 09:08, 4 September 2012 (EDT)
I don't think the suppressredirect right was ever handed to non-admins in the past. It might be a useful thing for autoconfirmed users to have I guess; you can make a proposal if you think likewise. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Frivolous 09:42, 4 September 2012 (EDT)
I remember there being a big discussion about it, as many users were creating useless redirects when they were fixing capitalisation in page titles that weren't proper nouns. I may be mixing it up with users gaining the ability to move images though. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 09:49, 4 September 2012 (EDT)

Zair

The term Zair is definitely more widespread, that's the term I would always use, but I still don't think we can on the wiki. From my experience, any instances of "A button attack" or "Up B" have to be changed to non-specific names for the sakes of the sideways Wii Remote, so Zair should be the same, especially as zair only applies to one control scheme. I would also note that further down the page, Toon Link (SSBB) refers to the attack as a Grab Air with zair in parentheses. Toast Wii U Logo Transparent.pngltimatumA transparent image of Swadloon for my sig. 20:08, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

I would have to disagree in this case. While "up special" is fully recognisable, flows well, and is often used instead of "up b", it's not the case here. I never see "grab air" used instead of "zair", and "grab air" itself sounds rather awkward. Zair flows a lot better and is a lot more recognisable, and while there are other controller types, the GCN controller is still the most commonly used controller. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 20:19, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

What's Zair? I've never heard of it. Bandit 20:24, 5 September 2012 (EDT)
I had no idea or ever heard of Zair until now, tbh. Bandit 20:28, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

It's a term more often used by competitive players. Officially it is called a tether, though that is a poor shorthand name since it can also refer to several up specials and two side specials. Mr. AnonAnon.pngtalk 20:29, 5 September 2012 (EDT)

Listing damage with/without freshness/staleness

You said on Smash Master's talk page "The freshness bonus does not apply in training mode [...], so percentage gotten from there should not be used". Why do you think this? Response on IRC might be preferred since this will likely result in a big back-and-forth. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Labbie 16:16, 14 October 2012 (EDT)

It's more useful/practical to list the damage with the freshness bonus applied. Knowing Ganon's dair will deal 23% fresh is more useful to the player than knowing that the move is programmed to deal 22% as its base damage. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 17:16, 14 October 2012 (EDT)
Doesn't that then ruin things like calculation of damage done when countered/absorbed/stale/everything, and understanding of damage dealt in all non-versus/HRC modes? Toomai Glittershine ??? The Irrepressible 17:21, 14 October 2012 (EDT)
How exactly does that "ruin things"? And knowing stale-move negation doesn't apply outside those modes is enough understanding of how damage is dealt in those modes. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 17:33, 14 October 2012 (EDT)
I'll also point out your moveset tables leave room to put the programmed damage, while leaving room for the practical damage to be listed in the move's description. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 17:35, 14 October 2012 (EDT)
If you're going to assume users are too ignorant about freshness (which may be a valid concern, I don't know), then put "Damages below do not account for freshness or staleness" at the top of every moveset section instead of putting a calculation result in every description. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Inconceivable 17:52, 14 October 2012 (EDT)
"Deals 23% fresh" is fine enough, and I see you ignored my second post about how the moveset tables leave room for both. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 19:52, 14 October 2012 (EDT)
I didn't ignore your second part, I just apparently didn't make my statement on it clear enough: Why do we want to put a calculation result in every description when a simple explanation at the top of the page is sufficient? The freshness bonus is so small compared to charged smashes or specials that it really does not need to be part of a damage listing, and the only reason it could seem to matter at all is because of how anything that deals 20% or more has a freshness bonus of over 1%, which even then is easily drowned out by all the other leftover decimals of over moves. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Honcho 21:06, 14 October 2012 (EDT)
Eyo, late reply, been busy all of yesterday.
The freshness bonus, as "small" as you see it, is a lot more important than what you're putting it to be. In Brawl, whenever the move is fully fresh, that's the damage it will deal, and it's vital for smashers to know what damage their moves deal when fully fresh. We must absolutely have it as part of the damage listing, you'll be depriving readers of important information otherwise, and as stated before, it easily fits in the move description, as demonstrated all the years we had it listed in the moveset. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 18:43, 16 October 2012 (EDT)
As I see it, you're arguing in favour of including info in descriptions that is trivially easy to derive for the majority of people who are skilled/knowledgable enough to care about said info. How is this depriving people of information? Toomai Glittershine ??? The Indescribable 19:39, 16 October 2012 (EDT)
"Trivially easy" is irrelevant, and can be said about many other things we include on the Wiki, such as knowing how much more damage a smash deals when charged that you held up earlier as something that should be included. Knowing how much damage the attack actually deals ingame before stale-move negation kicks in is fully relevant and vital information, that you're trying to exclude for arbitrary reasons. I'll also point out that my practical knockback testing is based on moves with the freshness bonus intact, which not including the actual damage dealt with it would not correctly represent the information. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 21:39, 16 October 2012 (EDT)
Fine you can have your practicality shindig. But if you're going to leave fresh damage in descriptions, then at least make it decimally-accurate, and ensure the base damage is more prominent if a moveset table isn't there yet. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Interspacial 22:18, 16 October 2012 (EDT)
Having the decimal listed would be preferred. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 00:19, 17 October 2012 (EDT)

So, time for round 2 I guess.

Ganondorf's nair in Melee does 12 damage for both hit 1 and hit 2. However, staleness in Melee is applied to late hits if an early hit connects. As a result, the second kick can do either 12% or 10.92% depending on whether the first kick hits, resulting in one person saying it does 22% total (12%, 10%) and another saying it does 12% and 12% (for 24% total). Both of these are reasonably valid interpretations. Since Melee moveset tables are not a priority right now (unless someone convinces me otherwise :P), how should be presented for this and all other multi-hit attacks in Melee? Toomai Glittershine ??? The Pan-Galactic 17:32, 17 October 2012 (EDT)

Mention the damage each hitbox deals, but list the actual damage dealt if all hits connect. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 19:01, 17 October 2012 (EDT)

Stop taking away info from Project M.

It states at the top, under Melee Veterans. That players should assume that every Melee veteran gets there own moveset, but since ganondorf kept his braw moves. The info stays. (GamerGuy09 (talk) 04:07, 22 October 2012 (EDT))

This is late, but I'll respond anyway. That's incorrect format, Project M is a Brawl mod, and as such, listed changes should reflect changes from the game it modded. You can mention how everything except those special moves were changed to their Melee imitation, but having a whole separate bullet points for something from Brawl being retained (such as Warlock Punch being reversible) is plain unnecessary. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 01:41, 27 October 2012 (EDT)

Speculation?

It seems that you believe adding the statement that Poke Floats is made up of parade floats is speculation.

How is it that this is speculation when the stage itself has the word "Floats" in its name? 65.49.14.13 15:10, 31 October 2012 (EDT)

Where's your proof that the stage is based on real life parades? If it "may be" or "possibly is", it's speculation.
And that second argument is just terrible. Floats/balloons exist outside parades, and a single word in the stage name is not an indicator of the origin whatsoever (in case you didn't realise, the name is based on what the stage actually is).
I'll repeat what I told Toast and in the previous argument for that ridiculous Poke Floats speculation; not everything in Smash needs a damn origin, there are several things within the game that are original additions, we do not need to add the most ridiculous and obscure speculation of a highly improbable origin just to fill an origin section. The Wiki does not document personal speculation, do not try to add it to articles. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 15:39, 31 October 2012 (EDT)

Ack! Didn't see that, sorry about that. Magiciandude (talk) 12:27, 12 November 2012 (EST)

The facts

Assuming the knockback formula for Melee is the same as the other two games, the higher damage and base knockback of the Brawl Knee override the lower scaling, and it does more knockback (against Mario) in every situation. (The knee-on-Mario formulas are 1.4x+67.2 for Melee and 1.443378788x+75.53540682 for Brawl; they don't intersect at a positive value.) If targets get sent less distance, then that's a physics change, not a knockback reduction.

Also, Yoshi's f-smash will only appear to do 17% if the target's damage has .2 or more for a decimal. Whenever we talk about how much damage a move deals (or appears to deal), it makes little sense to assume anything but 0.0% for their damage beforehand. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Bold 16:28, 14 November 2012 (EST)

I've made an admitted mistake about the knee damage (been so long since I played without a hack to put stale move negation in 1P modes), but my point still stands about a 1% damage buff being incredibly negligible when everything else about the move is so much worse.
For knockback, unless it's confirmed that both games use the same exact formula, you can't use that over relative KO percents (which ultimately determine how strong a move is). And from what I recall, Melee Knee did kill slightly faster than fresh Brawl Knee (despite having the freshness bonus). Now I wouldn't be surprised if the actual knockback difference was negligible (and if shown as such, I would support removing mentions of the Knee being weaker on the Wiki), but regardless of the actual knockback difference, a mention of just damage being negligibly 1% higher alone does not merit mention as being an actual buff. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 18:58, 14 November 2012 (EST)
Well, I'm of the opinion that the damage increase (which is technically almost 2% if you count the freshness bonus) saves the move from being even worse, and is therefore notable enough to be listed as a buff. Toomai Glittershine ??? Le Grand Fromage 19:05, 14 November 2012 (EST)
It can be mentioned on the nerf page that despite it nerfs, it got a very slight damage buff, but the buff page itself shouldn't be listing negligible buffs. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 21:29, 15 November 2012 (EST)

That user removing lots of content from Mario probably came as a result of mobile browsing, which can only handle so many characters, while he was making a legitimate edit, removing the pointless Super Mario 64 appearance line. A block may still have been applicable for violations of SW:1RV, I'm not telling you to undo it or anything, but I would think the edit would have been passable if he were notified on his talk page that his phone/tablet/console etc was wrecking the page. Fucking mobile browsers, if they're unable to edit without fucking up pages, I think we should disallow editing from them. For the IP, I'll reduce the ban down to 1 day, but not remove it completely, due to the 1RV violation and failing to notice that the edit they kept making was removing a large chunk of information. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 09:00, 31 January 2013 (EST)
It was the same thing with that edit to Link, the user was just adding a missing full stop, but his mobile browser wiped out the bottom of the page. After this kind of misfortune has happened twice in succession, it's certainly worth a mention on some kind of policy page that mobile browsing can wipe out the bottom of pages. However, I wouldn't disallow editing from them, I've made a lot of edits in my time using my phone or 3DS, just to sub-sections or smaller articles. Additionally, some users like Terrible have only ever been able to edit through a tablet. I have to wonder if Porple is able to put a message above the editbox informing users about this when they are editing on mobile browsers. Merging past contributions before the merge

Hi Omega Tyrant! I was wonder if there's a way to merge the contributions of the old SSBWiki account before the two wikis merged in 2008 with this wiki. My username is the same for both. Thanks! Magiciandude (talk) 21:39, 8 June 2013 (EDT)

Yeah something funny's up with those contributions; for some reason they're invisible to your Special:Contributions page but they still appear in page histories (for example, your userpage history is full of 2007 edits but your contributions page doesn't go past 2011). I don't know if that can be repaired, try asking Porplemontage. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Breegull 22:11, 8 June 2013 (EDT)

Could you change the article icons for Villager (SSB4) and Wii Fit Trainer (SSB4) from Smash 4 Wii U to Smash 4 general? Ixbran (talk) 23:27, 18 June 2013 (EDT)

Did a re-read of some of the rules, so i went and changed one of my characters. Added Bayonetta to the list. I think her chances are pretty high, given Bayonetta 2 being WiiU exclusive and coming out the same year smash does. Would be an excellent way to build hype for both games.

Similar short forms

Seeing this edit, I'm not liking how "Smash 64" and "Smash 4", and "SSB64" and "SSB4", are so similar to each other when used close togetherish. Maybe we should try to use "SSB" in such cases, I don't know, What do you think? Toomai Glittershine ??? The Engineer 23:15, 26 June 2013 (EDT)

In my experience, most people call the first game "Smash 64", not "SSB". Given that the latest game(s) are called "Super Smash Bros." as well, it is difficult to distinguish them outside of casual terms. Mr. AnonAnon.pngtalk 00:09, 27 June 2013 (EDT)
I don't think we have much choice, "Smash" and "SSB" overlap with the series' name, and I would use "64" and "4" rather than create an overlap with series' name (of course, this problem could have been avoided if they gave Smash 4 a proper name...) Priority, clang, and rebound

First of all, this talkpage is honkin'.

Secondly. I found out how Melee determines whether ground attacks continue or not when they clang. Brawl hitboxes appear to have this bit in the coding as well; the only bit left to decode in normal Brawl hitboxes matches up against the corresponding Melee character's moveset with high accuracy (barring a few special moves which can reasonably be inferred to have been intentional changes). But the problem is that I can't find any ground attacks in Brawl that continue when they clang.

For example, take Melee Fox's smashes. His up and down smashes rebound on clang, but his forward smash continues. The bit pattern in their hitboxes is carried over into Brawl, but all three smashes rebound on clang.

So, my question is: Do you know of any ground attack in Brawl that doesn't rebound on clang? (Hitboxes attached to props and projectiles do not apply.) If not, then I think we found yet another thing in Brawl that doesn't work (and a rather serious one). Toomai Glittershine ??? El Pollo 23:06, 22 July 2013 (EDT)

You're talking about attacks that continue on despite being cancelled out/clanged, like how aerial attacks behave with priority, right? If so, there's only two non-aerials I can think of in Brawl that behave that way; Gordo and the second hitbox of Zamus' up smash (which fall under your no props and projectiles). Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 23:20, 22 July 2013 (EDT)
Okay that's what I figured. Is this already known in the hacking community, has it been fixed in things like PM? Or is this something totally new I can spring? (kinda been out of it for a while so I don't really know) Toomai Glittershine ??? The Sharp 23:58, 22 July 2013 (EDT)

Alright no.

Show me where the community discussed and decided that "Smash 64" and "Smash 4" are preferred over "SSB"/"SSB64" and "SSB4". Because as far as I can tell, you just added "Smash 64" to the MoS as part of another edit without explanation and got other people to follow you. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Irrepressible 10:31, 4 August 2013 (EDT)

I don't see why the community would ever discuss something like whether "Smash 64" is preferred over "SSB64", so it would be impossible to find that information. Awesome Cardinal 2000 11:06, 4 August 2013 (EDT)
I just want to say, people have been and are changing SSB and SSB64 on articles to Smash 64. It would be annoying to have to go back. Scr7Wolfsig.png 11:09, 4 August 2013 (EDT)
Not nearly as annoying as it would be to continue with the changes. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Riotous 11:58, 4 August 2013 (EDT)
I'm with Toom on this. I think SSB and SSB64 are better shorthand versions. Miles (talk) 12:01, 4 August 2013 (EDT)
It should be "Smash 64, "Melee", "Brawl", and "Smash 4", as well as "SSB64", "SSBM", "SSBB", and "SSB4". The abbreviations should be consistent with what's being used in the article. Awesome Cardinal 2000 13:32, 4 August 2013 (EDT)

We agreed on not using initials to refer to game titles and been enforcing it for some time. Additionally as covered earlier, "SSB" interferes with the series name.

Also Miles, how the hell is "SSB/SSB64" better than "Smash 64"? Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 14:29, 4 August 2013 (EDT)

Well okay I guess I didn't specify properly. In article text, yes, "Melee" and "Brawl" are the preferred forms. But since you moved a "SSB4" page to a "Smash 4" title, you're implying we should make that change to all page titles as well, and that would need a census. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Producer 14:42, 4 August 2013 (EDT)
What we do proper in articles applies to titles as well, and the stage list title wasn't "List of stages (SSB4)" (where it then has use in templates)", but "List of confirmed stages in SSB4/Smash 4", where we can't use the inplace templates to aid linking to it. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 14:50, 4 August 2013 (EDT)
So keeping an article's title the same as its text is more important than keeping all titles the same. Toomai Glittershine ??? The Zesty 14:52, 4 August 2013 (EDT)
Why not just use the full title and not abbreviate? List of confirmed stages in Super Smash Bros. 4. DoctorPain99 14:54, 4 August 2013 (EDT)
The title wouldn't be kept "the same", no other article title has "in SSBX" for its title (and yes, an article's title should be line with the text). Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 14:57, 4 August 2013 (EDT)
(Edit conflict) - That works too DP99, "in Super Smash Bro. 4" is much better than "in SSB4". Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 14:57, 4 August 2013 (EDT)
I moved it there because it's best to use the full name in this scenario in my opinion. It can be changed back if people end up not agreeing. DoctorPain99 15:00, 4 August 2013 (EDT)
I agree it's best to use the full name here. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 15:02, 4 August 2013 (EDT)

Hypothetical question: If I were to tell you we weren't locked into using (SSBX) for template purposes (haven't looked, so don't ask if it's actually feasible), would you proceed to lobby to have all such article titles changed? Toomai Glittershine ??? The Eggster 15:04, 4 August 2013 (EDT)

No, because the templates we use are for efficiency, and the initials are more efficient to use. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 21:50, 4 August 2013 (EDT)
