Moving to subcategory

Hey, I just recently created the category Category:British smashers and would like it to be placed a a subcategory of European smashers. Can anyone do this for me, or teach me as I'm still new to the whole contribution thing. thanks - Aiko

Region Pages

M3D's recent lists of categories/tournaments by region and state give me an idea. We can easily create a page for each major area (maybe six or seven in all) and list on that page notable players, recurring tournaments (only recurring) and crews. I'd like to go ahead and start on this. I'll create a category called Category:Smash Communities which will hold a collection of pages of notable smash regions, such as the San Jose Area and the Sacramento Area (just local examples). A player searching for people in his area can look to that page which will contain lists of notable Smashers and crews in that region. Problem with a redirection

A member of my Smash crew goes by the name 'Green', but he can't add a page about himself because Green redirects to Green Shell. What should I do? Trig. 14:20, March 4, 2007 (CST)

Ok, I think I might have done something wrong because now Green redirects to Green (Smasher) instead of Green Shell.

Red Shell

Every time I try to go to the Red Shell page, I ke4ep getting this:

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

In dire need of uniformity

I notice lots of different uses of tenses and POVs in naming schemes. For example, there are two articles for the Wall Jump, named Wall jump and Wall jumping. Also, we need to use proper title caps for article titles. "Wall jump" is not acceptable. I suggest a non plural(unless several types exist) and neutral tense titles. No "Wave Dashing", "wave Dashing", or "Bunny Hoods". "Beam Swords" might be acceptable if the article covers both Beam Swords in the series. Page URLs and locations are case sensitive. We MUST decide on a uniform naming system now, or we'll have a total mess. It would be best to get everything organized now, while the number of pages are small and link fixing is minimal. xnamkcor 03/08/07 1600(AZ/US)

Per this topic, here are a few guidelines I follow:

• use the singular form of nouns
• with verbs, use the gerund form (jump-canceling) unless the original form (wavedash) can also be used as a noun.
• do NOT use title caps. This is against the "rules" for titles but more appropriate for an encyclopedia, because we're documenting the proper capitalization of the term (hence, wall jumping is the proper title). Wiki software automatically capitalizes the first letter of the title; not much we can do about that.
• full names should be used, not abbreviations. Thus, forward aerial instead of "f-air" or "AFA."

I think these things should be put in a help page or a SmashWiki guideline, so that people know how to name their articles. I'll start on that right now. – MaskedMarth ^{(t c)} 19:45, March 9, 2007 (GMT)

StrategyWiki

Hi, I come from StrategyWiki. A wiki site dedicated to providing video game strategies and guides for all games. For more about what we are standing for, see here.

I come here asking for the community of the Smash Boards, and smashwiki in particular, would be interested in helping us to flesh out our SSB SSBM and SSBB guides. We have several dedicated Smash players there (myself included) and we have been working on the guides of the two released games for a while, but we could definitly use the touch of some of the more veteran smash players of the world, and I figured this would be the best place to find them. We are forming a small group to start up work on the SSBB guide as soon as we can get our hands on it, but nothing would help out more then the members here taking a look at all our smash games and lending their expertise. If this isn't possible, I ask if the content in this wiki could be lent in it's current form (via Special:Export) to expand our guides. According to your copyright status, it doesn't seem possible without relicensing of content, which you stipulate may be done at any point.

If any of the members here more knowledgeable in the game could help out at strategywiki, it would be greatly appreciated. Regardless of the response I get to this topic here I'm going to check out this wiki and the forums myself, can't believe I didn't come here earlier. Languages

Currently, the only page in other languages is Global Smasher Compendium ([[GSC/fr|fr]], [[GSC/sv|sv]], [[GSC/es|es]]) which I personally find a shame. I don't know that we have enough of an international audience for that to make a huge difference. Also I'd be concerned about having to monitor the content of different wikis in different languages on top of this one, and handling policies on each, and the extra administrative work that would probably be involved. It does no harm to do a couple of the big articles...but also no good. The largest articles, such as SSBM, have Wiki pages in other languages. Also, interlinking would be completely useless from these pages -- it would do no good to link to an English page from one in Deutch. Engrish

Is it necessary to have the Japanese pronunciations if it's just Engrish? Is there a point to writing "Kyaputen Farukon" (Captain Falcon) or "Roi" (Roy) or "Rinku" (Link)? Some, such as Pikachu and Mario are written exactly the same way. And this also goes for "Kuppa" (Bowser). Formatting Proposal: Structure by Characters?

I'm here to propose something that would make a MASSIVE change in the way SmashWiki articles about Nintendo characters and items are laid out. I notice that there are a lot of pages that can't ever become more than 1-paragraph stubs, such as a lot of the pages on the Melee trophies; each of those pages contains a write-up of the in-game trophy description and seemingly nothing else. And in many cases those trophy pages quite literally cannot have anything else added because many trophies are either found in the lottery or randomly appear in the Single Player game modes. There're also a lot of cases where by our current layout standards we have several small, separate articles about what's pretty much the same subject (examples: Meta Knight and [Meta Knight (trophy)]], as well as many Pokemon species having two tiny articles each, one for its appearance from a Poke-Ball item and one for its appearance as a trophy in the same game).

For both this reason and the fact that part of the reason for the Smash Bros. franchise's success worldwide is because it features all sorts of instantly recognizable game characters and properties interacting in one game, I say the site's articles should be structured so that you type the name of a Nintendo character or property into the search box and you get one fully developed, coherent article that a) introduces the subject, b) describes where and how that subject has been in gaming outside of the Smash series, and c) summarizes that subject's each and every appearance throughout each game in the Smash Bros. series, with Main Article links to appropriate Smash-gameplay-specific articles from those sections. Kinda like how all the Universe pages I've been making recently are laid out in content (see Kirby (universe). After all, the general idea behind a wiki is that you get everything relevant about a subject in an article when you type a subject's name in the searchbox; so this proposal would satisfy that ideal better than the way we have pages now. Here are some examples of the new format I'm proposing:

• Metal Mario: The page should introduce him, then talk about his appearances in Mario games outside of Smash like in Super Mario 64. Then the page should summarize all of Metal Mario's appearances through the Smash series; in the "In Super Smash Bros." section, it'd talk about him as a sub-boss in SSB with its own Main Article link; then in the "In Super Smash Bros. Melee" section it talks about him as a sub-boss in SSBM with a Main Article link as well, and it should also show and detail the trophy named Metal Mario (because the trophy's name is the same as the article's name, that is where viewers should go to see the in-game text of the Metal Mario trophy). Don't put in an "In Super Smash Bros. Brawl" section for the page until Metal Mario is revealed in Brawl.
• Meta Knight: The page should currently introduce him as a Nintendo character, then talk about his appearances in Kirby games and anime outside of Smash games. Then the page should talk about all of Meta Knight's appearances throughout the series; in other words, there's no SSB section for Meta Knight, the SSBM section shows and details his trophy because the trophy's name is Meta Knight, and then the SSBB section summarizes Meta Knight as a playable fighter in SSBB, with a Main Article link to the Meta Knight (SSBB) gameplay article. Both the general Meta Knight page and the Meta Knight Brawl Character gameplay page would be vastly updated once Brawl is released.
• Super Scope: The page should introduce the item, talk about its appearances as a real-life gaming peripheral, and then talk about all of its appearances in the Smash Bros. series as of now. Since as of now the Super Scope has appeared in Melee as an item and as a trophy, both should be fully dissected in the Super Scope article's SSBM section. If the Super Scope is to return in Brawl, by then we can add an "In Super Smash Bros. Brawl" section to the page.
• DK Island: First introduce the subject and detail its appearances in the Donkey Kong video games, and then talk about all of its appearances in the Smash Bros. series as of now. Since DK Island locations have been used as a stage in SSB and as three stages in SSBM, provide one summary in the SSB section with its own Main Article link to the Congo Jungle stage article and provide three summaries in the SSBM section with their own Main Article links to stage articles.
• Ryota Hayami: This is an example I've already implemented in the past. Notice how I've started the article with an introduction of Ryota, then somewhat detailed what he is like in the Wave Race games, then proceeded to summarize Ryota's each and every appearance thus far in the Smash Bros. series. In Ryota's case his only appearance was in a Melee trophy, but since the trophy is named Ryota Hayami, it should be and is fully detailed in the article. If Ryota is to make any Smash appearances in the future, the way this page is laid out will allow for additional content about that.

An advantage to doing everything in this format is that all these pages can be easily extended to accomodate new content from Brawl when it is released. Another advantage is that now you won't have to be a Smasher in order to understand how the site's content is arranged and titled; whereas before you'd have to knowingly search for Chansey (trophy) to get to a tiny page about a character who probably has other equally undeveloped articles about it, now you can just type in the name of a Nintendo subject like Marth and get an informative and developed page about him as a Nintendo character that summarizes all his appearance in the Smash Bros. series thus far (including full details on the three Melee trophies named Marth), and people interested in how Marth plays can follow a link from the Marth page to Marth (SSBM) (and another link to Marth (SSBB) in the future, if he is to return in Brawl). If SmashWiki's aim is to be accessible to both casual gamers and hardcore Smashers, then I think doing things this way would work out great for everyone. Can I ask why in particular there is a demand for Aerial Forward Air, when F-air or D-air will do it? I believe there is a page already dedicated to the "fair" or "dair", and if newer users come, and don't know what it is, they will.. HOPEFULLY... click and find out. It's just that the SWF generally knows what a Fair is, and most of the pageviews are directed from smashboards, are they not? If I'm reading an intense article on smash, and I see the word Aerial Forward A, it really quite distracts me, and makes me question the worth of the document. Why? Quite simply, almost all 'advanced technique' players will use the term that comes more naturally for them. If I'm watching rugby, and someone gets the crap tackled out of them, I say "zomg he got FAIRed", not "zomg he got AERIAL FORWARD A!"

I'm just saying that maybe it's a good idea to use terminology that caters to those who use the site most often.

"Forward aerial" is a more common way of saying it, in any case. And for sake of clarity it's better to use that instead of "fair," which has a fair amount of other meanings. In writing articles, I prefer to use the long versions of the terms, instead of the abbreviations, to preserve an encyclopedic tone. Ugh...

There are several problems I've been having on smashwiki that really annoy the heck out of me. Such as the many pages who have incoherent, large and useless paragraphs about how their controllers have broken, the other many video games they enjoy playing and how they "know everything about Yoshi, with Mario close behind for second place, with Falco struggling for first place."[2] and the many smashers who post their skill level as: "Advanced."[3] But the biggest problem I've been having is with several smashers who continue to post useless pictures and clan logos that take up half their pages even after I posted the reason why it was removed in the discussion on the page. They even make an entire smashwiki page for an image![4] Do we need to show the rules on every page so people will stop? Do we have to have a link to the rules on the left side of smashwiki along with the help and FAQ links? Or are people just so lazy to read the rules on the upload page?[5]

I may know a reason why not English-born people upload images without reading the image policies (like I did^^ [sorry]): If you change your language, certain pages which also exist in Wikipedia aren't translated from Smashwiki, but just display the original text from Wikipedia in that language. So the image policies aren't mentioned e.g. in the German upload page. -- Mor 17:25, May 26, 2007 (GMT)

I see your point. The person i'm having the most difficulty with though is User:SSJBowser. Several of us continue to remove the images and we even state quite clearly why they're not wanted in the discussion of the page. I also even gave them a link to the image policy page, but they he/she continues to upload more useless and large pictures onto his pages. Beam Sword notice

Search?

I'm having a problem like this. Whenever I try to search for something, an "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message comes up. English smashers?

Ok, I came across this article and thought since a category for Scottish smashers has been created, how about a English smashers category? Or should it be by another name? Another little thing is, some category's exist twice. Because for example, one category is called 'European Smashers' while another is called 'European smashers' So capital s for smashers or not is the question? Article of the Week

This has pretty much grinded to a dead halt during the time MaskedMarth was out of the house, without anything being updated about it for months. It's pretty clear to me no one would want to put the effort into getting that back up to speed, so I'm thinking we should disband it and replace it with a very similar Featured Article feature that does not have a timed schedule, so that we can Feature whatever article whenever without feeling any deadline pressure to have a new one up once every single week. I just made a fake little template for confusing or unclear articles that would be unfamiliar to those who don't know what it's about, much like the one Wikipedia has (but not the exact same thing). Database error

Characters

There's quite a few characters who have no/very little information on their pages (Dr. Mario and Falco, for example). Anyone up for expanding these pages? I'm much too lazy to undertake this task by myself, to be completely honest. >_> -EPX2 20:28, September 30, 2007 (EDT)

Added a new stage profile.

K so if anyone doesn't know me I'm Starphoenix and I am new. I added a stage to the list of stages, North Pole. Now currently it has an asterisk next to it to show that it is a tentative named stage.

Actually, it wasn't him that named the Norfair article early, it was me.
