The Fire Flower made its debut in ''[[Super Mario Bros.]]'' They pop out of ? Blocks when Mario or Luigi are in their Super states. Once obtained, they become Fire Mario / Luigi and can toss fireballs, projectiles that are fired diagonally downwards and bounce off the ground. Fireballs are very efficient at clearing out enemies quickly, being the only way to defeat underwater enemies and providing an easier time during Bowser fights.

The Fire Flower has underwent a lot of visual changes within the ''Super Smash Bros.'' series. In ''Super Smash Bros.'', the Fire Flower's design is based on the design from ''Super Mario Bros.'' In ''[[Melee]]'', it has an unique design modeled after a {{s|wikipedia|daisy}}. From ''[[Brawl]]'' onwards, the Fire Flower's design is based on the design from ''{{s|mariowiki|New Super Mario Bros.}}'', which became its standardized look. In ''Ultimate'', the fire looks more cartoony than in previous games.
