==Origin==

Chain Chomps made their debuts as enemies in ''{{s|mariowiki|Super Mario Bros. 3}}'', and has become a recurring enemy in the ''Mario'' series. They are spherical, metallic dog-inspired enemies with a giant mouth filled with large, sharp teeth. They are very aggressive and attempt to lunge and bite the player if they get too close. 

Chain Chomps are often seen  bound to a wooden pole by a metal chain, which means the player is safe if kept outside a certain radius. If possible, destroying the pole releases them, where they wildly bounce around the area, destroying everything in their path. This is sometimes necessary for progression, such as the Chain Chomp crashing through a wall and revealing a secret area. Chain Chomps are usually fought as enemies and hazards throughout the ''Mario'' franchise. They are also occasionally used as items, like in ''{{s|mariowiki|Mario Kart: Double Dash}}'' and several ''Mario'' sports games.

Chain Chomps made their debut as an Assist Trophy and an enemy in Smash Run. While based on its appearance in contemporary 3D ''Mario'' games, the chain itself is simply a set of unconnected circles like in ''Super Mario Bros. 3''.

The Chain Chomp Assist Trophy was announced during the [[Nintendo Direct#Super_Smash_Bros._Direct_(April_8,_2014)|''Super Smash Bros. Direct'' in April 8, 2014]]. During the reveal trailer, the Chain Chomp is seen on the [[Palutena's Temple]] stage's [[Ω form]] unaffected by {{SSB4|Mario}}'s [[Fireball]] attack.

As an Assist Trophy, the Chain Chomp initially spawns above the summoner's head. It then disappears and reappears stuck to the ground by a wooden peg, where it will slowly patrol around its peg before biting out while being held back by its chain, dealing around 24% and moderate knockback. It will repeat this at least twice before disappearing. The Chain Chomp's body will do minor contact damage to any enemy it touches during that time. Should the Chain Chomp's bite cause its main body to get stuck under a solid platform (such as the underside of [[Battlefield]]), it will still attempt to bite, though it will travel less distance due to it being stopped by the stage.

As a Smash Run enemy, the Chain Chomp functions similarly as an Assist Trophy. They patrol around the peg they're chained to, lunge at the fighter, and get held back by its chain. Their bodies feature [[super armor]], but their chain's wooden peg itself is vulnerable. Once it takes enough damage, the Chain Chomp will be set free and run away, leaving behind a large amount of stat boosts.

The Chain Chomp serves as the basis for the Chomp Hat headgear for the {{SSB4|Mii Fighter}}s. 

In {{for3ds}}, it can be obtained at random; however, in {{forwiiu}}, it can be unlocked by getting a chain of 100 or more in a single game of [[Trophy Rush]].

Chain Chomp returns as an Assist Trophy. It has a dark blue color scheme instead of a black color scheme, and its chain is more realistic and is now connected to a metallic post, similar to the ones in ''Super Mario Odyssey''.

The Chain Chomp Assist Trophy functions similarly as it did in ''Super Smash Bros. 4''; however, it can be KO'd, which earns the player an extra point. [[Training Mode]] describes the Assist Trophy: "''Jumps at nearby opponents, biting at them fiercely.''" They cannot be summoned on the [[3D Land]], [[Balloon Fight]], [[Brinstar Depths]], [[Luigi's Mansion]], [[Mute City SNES]], [[Rainbow Cruise]], [[Spirit Train]], and [[Tomodachi Life]] stages.

Chain Chomp appears in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate]]'' as an Advanced-class [[primary spirit]], and is featured on the {{h2|List of spirits (Super Mario series)|Goo Goo Buggy}} spirit. It can be [[Shopping|purchased]] from [[Master spirit|Timmy & Tommy's]].

Chain Chomp's Spirit Battle uses a [[Metal]] {{SSBU|Pac-Man}} puppet fighter and is fought on the {{SSBB|Yoshi's Island}} stage's [[Battlefield form]] with a hostile Chain Chomp Assist Trophy. During the battle, Metal Pac-Man favors [[Power Pellet]] which transforms him into his classic form, resembling the Chain Chomp's shape.

During the Goo-Goo Buggy Spirit Battle, the Chain Chomp Assist Trophy is fought along with the {{SSBU|Mario}} and {{SSBU|Luigi}} puppet fighters on the [[Figure-8 Circuit]] stage. During the battle, the puppet fighters' move speed will increase, referencing the Goo-Goo Buggy's high acceleration stats.

*While the [[Assist Trophy]] and [[Smash Run]] versions of Chain Chomps in ''Super Smash Bros. 4'' have a simple chain inspired by their original appearance in ''Super Mario Bros. 3'', its trophy depicts it with a more realistic chain depicted in more recent ''Mario'' games.
*The Chain Chomp's ''Brawl'' trophy description is incorrect, as the Chain Chomp in Bob-omb Battlefield can actually be defeated in ''Super Mario 64'' by ground pounding the wooden pole it is attached to.
*Ironically, the two spirits that feature Chain Chomp in ''Ultimate'' have opposite effects: the Chain Chomp spirit increases weight, while the Goo-Goo Buggy spirit decreases it.
